- one of my favourite songs of all time produced by scratch ,
sang by sam carty
i found the original version some years ago and here it is ,first lee perrys version then the original by Naushad
(info)
Bird In Hand is actually a cover of a song from a 1950 Indian film
called "Babul" (dir. Raj Kapoor). The original song, written by
Naushad, is sung by Talat Mehmood and Shamshad Begum. If you want to
know what sam carty singing (check it out!), the original words are:
Milte hi aankhein dil hua deewana kissi ka (x2)
Afsana mera ban gaya afsana kissi ka
Puchho na mohabbat ka asar, haay na puchho
Dam bhara mein koyi ho gaya, parwaana kisika
Afsaana mera ban gaya, afsaana kisika
translated:
As soon as our eyes met, somebody's heart went mad
My tale has happened, somebody's tale
Don't ask me love's effect, oh, don't ask
I took a breath and somebody happened, somebody's lover
Lee Perry told us during filming of The Upsetter that Sam Carty came into the studio with a song he wanted to remake and started singing in Hindi. Lee didn't know what the lyrics meant but went with it. Sam did not speak Hindi but this was one of his favorite songs. They laid it over the riddim and it turned out magical. A great example of Lee's genius and his willingness to experiment.
Magic is right
I read in David Katz's GREAT biography of Lee that Sam had Indian heritage - he may not have spoke Hindi himself, but he must've heard this through his parents or grandparents. So awesome!
Am a singer from🇲🇺 islands so I was chocked wat talent I can tell him a legends 😢so now I know why bob marley 😢conqueror the world
thank you for the hindi piece 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
one of my favorite upsetter tracks
Many of the old Hindi Bollywood songs can be a goldmine for talented musicians of today
One of Perrys most poetic compositions!
One of the most brilliantly psychedelic songs ever, thanks for the background info. I was never sure what language it was sung in, or if it was just in English and Scratch had twisted it into outer space on his mixing desk!
This is hindi , bollywood song ,1951 movie Babul, originally sung by talat Mehmood n shamshad Begum
milliion emotions in one song, something deep to uplift
quite possibly my favourite tune of all time. most wonderful ; )))
only thought to google it a year or so ago and found the hindi background. what a strange story that brought us this work of absolute genius....
Brilliant... I stumbled across this (a later version but by Lee Scratch Perry) in a 4 album best of..and had a moment of realization when I recognised the song (I speak hindi)...fell in love with this track instantly, and shared it with many friends and family :) FWIW the pronunciation is way off but the rhythm is very recognisable! Thanks Kockos..

Both are awesome ! This melody is haunting
one of the best songs.

Can you believe that Sam Carty was not given the recognition that he deserved financially and otherwise by Lee Perry. Anyway Sam is Healthy and Wise. Long live Sam Carty.

wow..
So with the Lee Perry sauce it just transformed from a relatively ordinary Indian song to a master dub piece.
Not ordinary but a classic bollywood hindi movie song starring one of the greatest actors of the industry..Dilip Kumar and sung by Talat Mahmood and co.
good to hear you found it :)
what a genius
Hermosa!!!!
Saludos desde México 🇲🇽❤️
He is the Upsetter 💚💛❤️
haven't heard the Hindu version for years - thanks for the post
Nice find!! always wondered what it was, i thought it was Perry making up words again!! nice to know... i wonder if there is more of a story to the song or did he just watch the film and decide to do a remake.... cool!
I'm still speechless. Maybe I can just say, it follows the Good Rule. Good song, good musicians, good instruments, good producer, good history. No wonder this song is ageless.
meu deus do ceu
Listen Mato Seco - Bird In Hand , Is Awesome,
But Lee Perry is Lee Perry!!!
From Brazil !!!!

Oh my GOD big present
isso sim é música rapá ♥
If you listen very close you can hear cross talk or maybe bleed from the mics telling you the lyrics do in fact go on longer than released. I have heard this version does exist. But I haven't heard it. If it's true Earl16 did this that could be a good clue to find this version.
Haha, great Lee Perry fan... I'm not surprised to find out the song isn't his.
true
yes it is SAM CARTY singing
very interessting! Great research on this fantastic tune. Any clues as to what the lyrics mean in English?
cheers
Does anyone know if Scratch did a dub of this or if there anyone did a version of this? This is one of the most awesome riddims to come out of the Black Art, I can't believe there is just only this one version.
To my knowledge there is no dub/version to the track sorry. Second half of the track is the version i guess
There is a perry dub called happy roots
i love this tune!! i'm looking for single record on 7inch or 12inch..
anyone know if there is a single record or it is only in the LP?
kurła co to się stanęło 🤯
Magnifiquo
heh about as shocking as it was to find out "Closer Together" Junior Murvin is in fact partly a Curtis Mayfield tune "Gypsy Woman". Having good taste in music certainly results in more good music!
And who is singing on Perry's version if not himself?
I always thought it was a biblical verse in Amheric og Hebrew or something like that. Maybe it's a romantic chant in stead
Clássica, Coloquem o Capacete ........Pow Pow Pow ...JAH RASTAFARI.......HF
Don't forget the black ark players (upsetters) bet sam heard this from a Indian in Jamaica
ma BIBLE !!!
Afasana mera ban gaya afasana quissi ca
Milte bad i and i
hahaha...yeah it's like that!
What is the original track called?
It's "Milte hi aankhe dil hua diwana kisika".
A hindi song.
