I lived in Hughes when this happened, and my brother and mum had gone for a driving lesson up to black mountain, where they got turned around because the building was at risk of being blown over down the mountain. I was at the movies with friends and their mum when the alarm sounded and we were evacuated. Outside it was dark like night and hot as an oven. I remember my brother and I sat on our roof with the leather foot Matts from the car, beating embers and stopping our roof catching alight. The reserve behind us burnt, and we were 5-6km away from Duffy/Rivett/Chapman. Such a psycho day. Now I’m proud to say I’m part of the crews who fight fires now 👌🏽

I lived in Canberra during these fires too, but I was only 6 months old so I don't remember it, but my mum has told me stories of what happened. My dad didn't want to leave our house in Chisholm for some reason (I don't think he thought it would reach us) so by the time it got really bad it was too late to leave. Luckily it didn't do any damage in our area (I'm pretty sure) but in the Duffy/Chapman area it would have been shocking, very scary.
I live in Minnesota, USA. After seen this I will never again be afraid when driving in a snow storm and I have 42 Minnesota winters under my belt! When the fire crews look scared, it is off scale bad.

While i bet any one of these blokes would say 'i was just doing me job' or the many volunteers would say 'it's just our duty', they are wrong because they are goddamn heroes staring at literal hell on earth, every single one of them past and current no matter what role they played. Sometimes there are glowing patches of sparks on the ground that flare up more brightly when the wind sweeps over them, sending a mass of sparks speeding further along, just above the ground. This looks like molten lava. Very bizarre. I've watched enough fire videos like this in Australia, Canada and the USA to think that if I lived in such an area, I would be packed and ready to flee even if the fire was in the far distance. And well in advance of any official evacuation, I'd be out. When it's moving fast, it can be too late if you wait.
Brett Johnson former Vollie here. I'd still be there if I lived in a volunteer area. Even if you're not up for fighting fires there are plenty of roles. I can recommend it, the sense of mateship and purpose is pretty special.
Most of those homes burnt by the fire front were right where the suburb meets the wilderness. However, there was a fire tornado that cut a 25km path right through a bunch of suburbs and took out a number of homes that were quite a distance from the fire front.

These houses are on Eucumbene Drive in Duffy, which is immediately adjacent to wilderness reserves. What isn't shown in this video is the damage caused to suburbs like Kambah which are several kilometers away from this fire front. These fires produced a tornado which carried embers much further into the suburbs.
Canberra was a literal fire tornado and thats what made it so hard to fight. I lived in the worst effected area, the fire kept going airborn literally and then landing wherever the fk it felt like. There's a few doccos on youtube about it
Did they have to include the part where the husband and wife get a ride from the chief as they are forced to abandon their home, and their dog, to flee to safety? So heartbreaking to hear stuff like that. It's obviously not in the same level as someone losing their life but still hurts to see how they have to willingly leave their dog to burn

We sent them down to the local shopping area and got on our roofs shoving t shirts down our drain pipes and hosing the gutters full of water, the Helicopters made a lot of noise on our side of the hillthrough the smoke, then we just heard the roar of the fire and we knew we were really in for it.
Yeah there was footage of crews from NSW standing by on the border waiting to be deployed. When they were finally sent into Canberra it was already too late Many houses were already alight. The commissioner of the NSWRFS was also at the ACT emergency services headquarters on that day. But right from the start fuel loads should of been reduced and the fires should have been attacked more aggressively. They let it burn for a week. On Jan 18 it was a perfect storm. It didn’t matter how many crews were sent from interstate, those fires couldnt be controlled.
Watched this because I was watching a few videos on fire bombings by the allies, dropping 1000s tons of incinderary bombs on whole cities not so much as to destroy military targets but to kill as many civilians as possible. Was absolutely horrific and most don't know much about it, the focus was always on Abombs which killed 70k and 80k each but months before in just one raid on Tokyo made a firestorm killing 100k. And the other infamous raid was on Dresden, late in the war Feb 45 the Germans were essentially beat and Dresden had no tactical adv to justify the bombing, a city with 600k and an additional 500k-1m refugees from Soviet front. The US and UK bombed the city for 2 days with napalm made a firestorm 1500 F with 150 mph winds that killed the "official" count of 35k but is way low that was only the number of bodies found its more likely 150k+ since so many people mostly women n children were either completely incinerated with no trace, while looking for survivors in bomb shelters and cellars they would find a pool of fat and liquid a foot or more deep as they were cooked and liquefied from the heat. People trying to run were getting stuck in the melting asphalt of the streets. It was an absolute travesty and a dark dark moment in the history of mankind perpetrated by the "good guys"
you can see the tornado damage near the end, it shows the debarked trees and the uprooted tree's damage to homes that is not consistent with fire damage
When we were going through this my children were small. We were evacuated from our home because we were told it wasn't safe. Where we were sent ended up being so much more fun...mmm embers falling from the sky as the fires swept through the streets two blocks from us. The flaming branches that fell onto our roof were the size of my arm... one of my kids nearly died that week... the hospital staff were fantastic. My family who were living in another state told me to stop whinging, it wasn't bad and I was making it all up. Yep they really said that. This year with the toxic smoke making life hell here, I kept my mouth shut, why cop a spray from them right?... mmm I was told Canberrans where whinging whining ar5es and wouldnt have any idea what a hard life really was... To all Canberrans I say "stay safe guys'...

In Germany, Lower Saxoney, Lueneburger Heide, we have had big fire at last 1975. Must be same bad for them, then apparatus and firefighter not have had smartphone, celluar phone, less radio communication, less 4-weehler. Some firefighter and apparatus die then fire was faster. To the video: I not understand the people, why they let the animals at home, why not bring with them? Why not go away, stay in storm of fire but want discuss with fire chief or police officer?! Okay, houses chrashes, but this can pay the insurance - live of people is unpayable!

Was absolutely horrific and most don't know much about it, the focus was always on Abombs which killed 70k and 80k each but months before in just one raid on Tokyo made a firestorm killing 100k. And the other infamous raid was on Dresden, late in the war Feb 45 the Germans were essentially beat and Dresden had no tactical adv to justify the bombing, a city with 600k and an additional 500k-1m refugees from Soviet front. The US and UK bombed the city for 2 days with napalm made a firestorm 1500 F with 150 mph winds that killed the "official" count of 35k but is way low that was only the number of bodies found its more likely 150k+ since so many people mostly women n children were either completely incinerated with no trace, while looking for survivors in bomb shelters and cellars they would find a pool of fat and liquid a foot or more deep as they were cooked and liquefied from the heat. People trying to run were getting stuck in the melting asphalt of the streets. It was an absolute travesty and a dark dark moment in the history of mankind perpetrated by the "good guys"

When we were going through this my children were small. We were evacuated from our home because we were told it wasn't safe. Where we were sent ended up being so much more fun...mmm embers falling from the sky as the fires swept through the streets two blocks from us. The flaming branches that fell onto our roof were the size of my arm... one of my kids nearly died that week... the hospital staff were fantastic.
My family who were living in another state told me to stop whinging, it wasn't bad and I was making it all up. Yep they really said that.
This year with the toxic smoke making life hell here, I kept my mouth shut, why cop a spray from them right?... mmm I was told Canberrans where whinging whining ar5es and wouldnt have any idea what a hard life really was...

In Germany, Lower Saxoney, Lueneburger Heide, we have had big fire at last 1975. Must be same bad for them, then apparatus and firefighter not have had smartphone, celluar phone, less radio communication, less 4-weehler. Some firefighter and apparatus die then fire was faster. To the video: I not understand the people, why they let the animals at home, why not bring with them? Why not go away, stay in storm of fire but want discuss with fire chief or police officer?! Okay, houses chrashes, but this can pay the insurance - live of people is unpayable!
