Om60x Engines are common in Nordic countries. Good modified mechanical fuel-pump + head size turbo = Power. OM606 stock internals can take up to 700hp. Roll some coal ! Thumbs up for diesel monster !

I got a NA om603, 606 and 603 turbo, in Poland
nice one! a small list of things and tips from my own experience. :
drop in 2jz single valve springs and retainers from bc. using the merc valve keepers.
for 500whp you will need about 140cc. so a 7.5mm pump will do it.
use a bw s257sx-e with a single entry t3 0.83 OPEN exhaust housing from agp or similar. (the genuine s200 housings just done work very well). (divided housings are very hit and miss on this engine. (ive tried ALOT...) this engine WILL NOT tolerate more drive pressure then boost. they just hit a wall when that happens.
if you have the cash, a 6266 gen2 pte with open 0.81 will do nicely.
before you even try and start doing anything, REMOVE and re-fit the glow plugs. and check the injectors. 140bar "pop" is a good start.
fit and electric fuel pump set to 3 bar via a external regulator... (bleeding injectors takes seconds not hours..)
if you have to pull the head, o ring the head. it will keep combustion gas in the cylinder better.
DO NOT run water methanol. it just does not mix well with this engine.
and the biggest thing, REMOVE THE OIL FILTER HOUSING AND CRANK IT OVER TO BLEED THE OIL PUMP, they suffer from dry pumps if its been siting for a while, and WILL NOT build oil pressure.
you will have to run about 35-40 psi and rev it to 5500-6k.
pre turbo egt expect to see 8-850c. and get the BIGGEST radiator you can get. these thing put alot of heat into the cooling system when making power.
i look forward to seeing the progress :). fell free to ask anything... mine's making 600+ and turning to 6500+ no problems with a mack truck hx55 on 45 psi.
hopping on the om606 train I love it, biggest problem with them is cooling, look up dieselmekens cooling mod and your set
Head gasket failure om these are common the om648 solved the problem
Dieselmeken really knows his stuff, blomppo has some good content on the swap stuff aswell.

I’ve got a 240d om606 swapped with dieselmeken pump and a holset hx40. What a beast !!! Up to 6200 rpm easy and 2.5 bar of boost. You’re going to love that engine

You may never heard of them in the USA, but here they're everywhere. I know of one in a S14 Nissan Silvia, a FC RX7, a R32 Skyline, countless BMWs, and so on. All making big power
Mercedes Benz also has an actual 2JZ😂 Its called m104 and its 2.8-3.2 liter gasoline engine and can make 1000hp pretty much stock. Inline six engine also. I would say its better than 2JZ by a lot.

I love Mercedes straight sixs. I currently build parts for the M104 and planning an OM606 build myself for my W126 OM603 S class
This is gonna be cool! I do hope the car handles ok afterward, even though the new engine doesn't weigh a ton (literally). So much better than 4BT swaps though

You guys do a lot of swaps just for sake of keeping cars 'interested', i think you should start an engine collection too. Buy weird stuff, refurbish, shelf and pull any one of them to swap something anytime or keep em just to admire.

Very good choice of engines they are well supported and there’s loads of adaptor plates/ clutches available also billet exhaust manifolds etc etc
These engines make crazy power for their weight. They obviously are lighter than the Big Three American diesels from the heavy duty trucks.
I don't know if it applies for the mechanical OM606, but the common rail versions suffered from "black death". The washer between the injector body and the head would be crush to the point that some compression and ignition would blow by the tiny space made, and carbon will build up like crazy. Check on the E300 CDI build on the Legit Street Cars channel for that example.

Its not weird, its smart. Reliable, fast and good mileage.
This makes me happy because now I get to watch a build series on one of these engines. I want to get a om606 if I can find a turbo one, for my 93 f150 later. Love the sound of that engine and how easy they are to make power with.
Also to add from what I've researched they are good for 700 to maybe 800hp on stock internals
@@dylanrice6707 Its a bit less than that. Not much. But at 700-800hp, their reliability is questionable. ~500hp at it will last forever.

This is not what I was expecting, and I did know what it was right away, badass choice. Yay OG garage! Any particular reason you're going back? In a way you guys are super lucky the hood came off like that and didn't take out the windshield or pillars. Excited for the diesel build. Still think it's criminal this channel is under 100K.
The shop is already crowded and we have a few more things coming that need the shop space. Kind of a double benefit of some throwback videos too

That hood needs to go on the wall in the shop. Wrap a picture of the 2.3 engine bay on it. Maybe above that old casting couch?

Lots of UK companies making tons of parts for these I think it's DieselPumpUK that's really pushing them with tons of upgrades.

I'll be following this closely! I plan on doing this swap for my 75 gmc crew cab tow rig. The 454 drinks like a fish and I don't want the weight of a cummins/duramax so om606 is it
The Merc OM60 is a great engine made to last. Didn't know that they were or could be a power made into a power monster.

great engine choice and they are super reliable it was/is a realy common taxi engine here in germany and even after that they still export them to run forever;)
Es ist schlicht weg mit einer der besten Dieselmotoren die es gibt. 1.9 tdi und OM606/OM603 sind mit abstand die haltbarsten une zuverlässigsten. Ein Arbeitskollege führ ein w210er 300TD also OM606 mit knapp 1,3 Millionen Kilometer und er war immer absolut zuverlässig und das einzige was ihm je zum verhängnis wurde war bei 1,2 mio Kilometer die turbolader aber denn hatte er von mercedes sogar auf Kulanz bekommen

I just got a recomendation for an Billet exhaust manifold for the OM606 and OM 605, maybe thats something to look into.
The biggest befenit was the space an portmatching.

Just subbed I gotta watch this build. I have a 86 Toyota 4x4 with a vvti 1jz swap its sweet but a diesel swap may just be the ticket to get the gas mileage to up for long trips

Talking about the shitty 400CDI that likes to drop cylinder liners? OM648, OM606 are more reliable.
@@AaJii Thank you for telling me what is wrong with my car. The last time I checked the liners were in their home. Car has been very reliable for hundreds of thousands of km.
@@al8161 OM628 and OM629 have terrible ecu to play with, injectors are too small for any good power gains, block is weak. Max for those engines is around 350hp / 700-800nm. I would be surprised to see either of those with more than 400 000km with unopened engine. I have owned and serviced multiple OM605,606,648, etc with more than 600 000km and unopened engine.
Doesn't make any sense. Would be smarter to build Volvo red block than 400CDI 🤣🤣 I'd rather own an VW 2.0TDI than OM628.

OM629 can make well over 400hp with just a tune, exhaust and pump
Look, I've been watching you guys since the very beginning. I've never heard of the om606, but the idea of a reasonable weight high power diesel is awesome. That being said tearing up the 240 seems like a waste of an already well executed but out of the box build. I think it would be better to swap it into something else in the fleet, is that C4 corvette still around, it would be rad to see a vette rolling coal. Anyways I'm sure it won't sway you guys since the 2.3 has been the bain of the 240 since you guys bought the car, just thought I'd make a case.

You should try Isuzu's 4jj1 its a 3.0L diesel thats very popular in Thailand they put it in everthing its also capable of huge amounts of power

You know alot of us know about the om603-617 right? It's availability and cost, along with adapter. I haven't seen a kit to mate it to my f150 transmission in my ranger..
