If everything in your life is rented, that means that you have no protection against inflation. Whomever the "rent" goes to has complete, total control over your life. So, in her Utopian scenario, if you run afoul of those who provide the goods and services you require to sustain life, for any reason - could be thought/speech out of alignment with the powers that be or maybe your health needs are such that they require excessive resources for just one person, those who hold the rent and lease notes on whatever physical items you rent or services you require to continue living could conceivably raise the "rents" to the point that you could no longer afford to go on living. It's already common for rents and leases to increase on an annual or semi-regular basis. That is one of the things that makes home ownership attractive, especially if you can buy in a market with low fixed interest rates.
And aside from all of that, despite her cheery selling of experiences - intangibles - where in the end all you may have are the memories and a credit card debt to pay off, and if you're lucky, a t-shirt to commemorate the experience (but she's even going to deny you that), in the end people benefit from having TANGIBLE things to come back to that give them a sense of connection. She sells her "own nothing" utopia as some sort of panacea, but in the end you are like a prisoner in a cell that you must rent.
It also made me think of the people in Shanghai who were locked in their apartments due to another CVD outbreak this spring, and there was video of people wailing and screaming from their windows as their doors had a seal placed on them from the outside by the govt authorities, and to break the seal was to invite repercussions for defying the government. No one wants to live like that. And no one wants to live like that in a place where everything is rented and nothing is owned, and there is a feeling of impermanence. And as for cars/automobiles, to own a car is to have freedom and mobility - especially a gasoline powered car.

  • @AnnoyedDragon

    It's the nature of power.
Those who have power always want more and they fear losing it. The more they accumulate for themselves, the more they have to lose, the more they fear.
That fear leads to them wanting to subjugate other people, in an effort to build a defence to quell their fears. Other people's oppression becomes their sense of security.
Their inability to leave people alone and creating intolerable conditions for the majority, eventually leads to a growing opposition that overwhelms them in the end.
That's the great contradiction with power. Power has a tendency to create the very conditions it fears, to bring about its own downfall. It could just leave people alone and not necessitate its own removal, but it cannot help itself, because power is full of fear of other people taking away that power.
They want to turn you into a rentier serf, dependant on them for everything, because they are terrified of your independence. Your ability to say no to them, to not comply, to one day tell them what they cannot do.
They are full of fear, so the boot comes down.

I think it’s ingrained into our very DNA to care for family or friends who could be considered an extension. I mainly hate Marxists because of this principle.

While it is only a material item, it is not everything, God is - it represents man's advancements and competency with gathering material to create something fascinating. Perhaps its not true for the soulless crossovers of today shaped like eggs, but the vehicles I own have very human elements and "soul" to it, whether its in design or function.
