whow! great for travelbloggers and incredible easy... I saw the same issue for the Premiere Workflow but with After Effects is a very lean process... thnx Collin
Hi i'm creating an animation similar to this for my course and was wondering how i could get the shadow of the plane to switch sides if the plane turned direction? great tutorial video though!
Thanks, this was interesting! However, would it be possible to make the camera zoom into the start location, then out for the travel and then zoom into the final location?
hey there, thanks for your video! - it is very well put together, clear and concise :) i am having a problem at the stage when i have created a dummy path to have the flight path pasted into. i follow your steps but when i hit paste, the original dummy path stays there but the selection on the intended path highlights as if the paste works - the path however doesnt have the dotted red line as the dummy path has. soooo, when i go through the trims path process, the dummy straight line moves but nothing on the flight path. when u hit paste, your dummy path seemed to disappear like a cut? any suggestion would be greatly appreciated :)
This video is exactly what I needed - so helpful! I am stuck however, in trying to creating a curved line SHAPE in photoshop. I have it working great as long as I use a straight line, because I can create that as a shape. I am not seeing how to do a curved line shape in PS 2018 CC though, am I just missing something obvious? The curved line I created does not give me the mask/mask path option. Quick fix?
Select the Pen Tool and make sure Shape is selection in the Options Panel. Although this tool isn't in the Shape Tools, it still creates something that you can use in After Effects.
I use Camtasia to capture the screen and also animate the red highlights around menus and zoom in. That is then taken into Premiere Pro where everything else is added so the lower thirds and any other on screen graphics are all Premiere Pro.
Perfect. I've now copied it step by step and it works great. There's one issue for me though. I wanted to ease in and out so I changed the keyframe by right clicking the keyframe > keyframe assistant > easy ease out. The issue is that the plane orientation changes however as soon as the motion kicks in it slaps back to the right direction. Any idea why this is happening?
You might need to edit the timing/position in the Graph Editor. If you see the slope of the path doing something odd, that's probably where it's slapping backwards. Have a look at this screenshot to show how to engage the Graph Editor: imgur.com/a/fSzhu
Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. Its a really odd situation and I can;t get my head around it. To explain a little more; I have the project working as well as your tutorial. At present the Plane orientation value is 144 degrees and the preview window shows the Plane shows it is pointing in the right direction. On the Plane layer I twirl down into the transform properties and then set the easy ease (F9). As soon as I hit the F9 key the Plane spins round almost pointing backwards however the rotation value still sits at 144 degrees. I'm totally stumped as to why this is happening.
I can't tell you how many times I've ended up at the same kind of confusion. Honestly, when this happens I abandon whatever method I'm currently trying and find another way to do it. After Effects isn't the issue, it's the complexity of animation and all the little things that have to be absolutely perfect for it to work. Motion graphics experts have a completely different way of looking at After Effects and I have no idea how they do it and I fail more times than I succeed. Sorry I'm not much help.
No problem. Oddly when I eased in to the last keyframe it made it much better and then if i moved the end keyframe around in the timeline i could line it up correctly for the rotation. So in summary, I figured out how to fix it but I have no idea why it was doing it. :)
Is there a way you can just animate the line to reveal without the need of the object (plane). I tried, by copying the path and pasting it for the position of the shape, which works, but the shape remains and moves along the path of the animation. So how would I get rid of the shape? Hope that makes sense...
+koreamedia - This tutorial assumes a basic understanding to After Effects. Look for my intro to After Effects. And here is the Photoshop file of the map for you to try out. www.dropbox.com/s/st9lsctandusjwo/Africa%20Map.psd?dl=0
VideoRevealed Thanks. Never seen such a kind youtube uploader. I've downloaded the photoshop file you linked and I'm looking into it. Several months ago I've read about it such as importing PS files as a sequence. My knowledge from the books is not practical, but your instructions are precise and useful. Now I'm interested in your AE intro and PS tutorials. Thanks man, really.
Great Tutorials! Have Question - I have been working on a map animation following your tutorials but the tool operations I see don't match what your videos show. I first started with your Premiere Pro tutorials (I have CS6). I created the Photoshop file and it seems to be like the one you posted. I imported my PSD file into Premiere and got to the point of bringing up the Opacity operation (5:23 into your Premiere video), but my project doesn't show the tools to draw the mask. So I then went to your After Effects tutorial. I get to 2:53 in your AE tutorial but I didn't see Mask Path controls. So with my Line selected I went to Layer/Mask/New Mask, and that seemed to give me a tool screen like yours. But then I get to 4:22 in your tutorial, and I can't seem to delete just the end point of the path; it deletes all the points (clears all the key frames). I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction to get this project animation done (perhaps the issue in Premiere cross-referenced with the issue in AE might be a clue as to what's going wrong). Thanks in advance.
Hi there, your video is really great! super well explained but I am having a problem. When I set to auto-orient at 6:07, my plane seems to orient itself to some point next to the line. So it follows the path but it keeps rotating to be facing this "point". How do I fix that?
Hey, thanks for the great tutorial. I will be editing a video in Premiere this week, and I would like to add this effect. Is it possible to do with After Effects and then add it later to the video in Premiere, or are files not compatible between the programmes?
You can import an After Effects Comp into Premiere Pro but you can't edit the contents. Any updates you make to the Comp are reflected in Premiere Pro. Here is a tutorial on doing that animation in After Effects: th-cam.com/video/7HdJVC4vQxU/w-d-xo.html
Trying to follow this 2022 and getting nowhere fast! Copy and pasting the layer doesn't work and I'm damned if I can find an add button. Is it me, or has AE changed substantially since this video was made?
It still applies to the current version. If this is your first time using After Effects, you may want to try the basics first because it's really easy to get lost.
@@VideoRevealed thanks so much for replying. You guessed correctly, I don't really use AE and am more familiar with the animation in photoshop. I will go back and give it another try!
+Mayan Gaming - You're right, but the process is exactly the same. When you're finished with the initial animation, just put that Comp into a new Comp and animate the scale properties like I did in Premiere Pro. This tutorial was more about showing how to use the path data to easily create motion data. FYI, most keyframes from Premiere Pro can be copied and pasted into After Effects, but not the other way around.
Can you do a tutorial please of how to do the photoshop part. In contrast to After Effects, Photoshop is one of the worst pieces of software ever created and I find it extremely difficult, awkward and unforgiving to use. Would be much appreciated, great video
VideoRevealed Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to create the line in Illustrator so that it is recognized as a "mask" when the AI file is imported into AfterEffects? When I draw a path in Illustrator, it is not recognized in AfterEffects as a mask.
I think a full 3D modelling application would be better for that. After Effects does not have full 3D capability, it's more like 2 1/2 D because it can't work easily with 3D objects. If you have the current version of After Effects, then you already have Cinema 4D Lite. And these guys have amazing tutorials: greyscalegorilla.com/
VideoRevealed thanks. but to be precise, I wanted monuments to stand tall on maps (which I shall add on the maps)... the map itself can be 2D (as if lying on a table). topography is not of much importance at the moment.
Those exact requirements are why using After Effects is the wrong choice. Even though the map is flat, you're still creating a virtual world and a 3D program is a much better choice. Add to that the fact that a program like Cinema 4D would allow you to fly around the scene and test things in realtime, while After Effects requires you to render every single time you change something. Trust me, you'll get very frustrated quickly in that restricted environment.
No matter what I do I can't create a line in CC1016 or whatever the latest rev is to make the line. Path doesn't work the mask comes in as a square, lines in photoshop I can't get to work out to be anything but straight. I know that I have to be missing something on the PS end. Any hints? Thanks,
It's not a mask from Photoshop, it's a shape layer. When you draw with the Pen Tool in Photoshop, make sure the Option Bar shows "Shape". From there, you need to twirl down and make sure you're selecting the Path in After Effects.
That's not something that can be easily explained in text but basically you can Parent the Position property of the Camera to the Position property of the plane, then use the Anchor Point property to offset the camera if needed. Usually what someone will do is start with a Null object and in the case of the motion of the plane, they'd add a null to follow the path instead of the plane. Then you Parent each object you want to follow the path by Parenting to the Null. The benefit is, anything you do to the Null is translated to each Child object. Now if you don't care about perfectly smooth and accurate camera motion, then just manually add Position keyframes to the Camera.
Thanks so much for your support. I've missed a few of your comments and I'm sorry for that. I actually paid for TubeBuddy but it missed so many comments.
hello +VideoRevealed i just wanted to ask if you could do a video on subtitling on premiere pro. if you could show me the best way or the most practical or professional way to it. i'm not really a fan of the built-in closed captioning in premiere pro. please teach me sir. :-)
create a basic format for how you want the text to look by creating a still text (not rolling credit), then for all the other lines of text you need for the person's words, just right click on the original text in the media box where everything is stored for the project and select "duplicate". Drag and drop the new duplicated text (itll probably say "Text copy 1" or whatever you renamed the text to in the media bin) onto the timeline then click it in order to edit what the words say. Repeat previous steps as needed. *Tip-make sure you name each piece of text something different in the media panel, otherwise when youre months into the edit and youre looking for a specific line of text and they all say "copy 1, 2, 3, 4, etc" itll mess up your mind and confuse the crap out of you Anyways, happy cutting! Hope atleast one line of that novel up there made any sense^ Im really confusing a lot of the time.
Yeah! Definitely. Preferably i have my media in the top left because when i began editing 5 years ago i started with Sony Vegas Pro 12 and they had theres setup that way, so i kind of just generalized the things I was talking about so it could be more easily understood.
+dipak das - I'll answer all your questions in this comment. 1. There is not single a sequence for film output; you can work with 2k or 4k or even HD for some film festivals. 2. Usually the venue where you're presenting your film will give you the specifications for output. It's important to note that Premiere Pro can export a Digital Cinema Package: helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/how-to/export-digital-cinema-package.html 3. Absolutely you can shoot with DSLRs and output a professional film, BUT, you need to have a DP that understands the limitations of DSLR footage and how to work within it. Shane Hurlbut is a guru on DSLR shooting and he is a Hollywood DP: www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/
If you're asking if you can use a DSLR and export something to be seen in a theatre, the answer is yes. If you are asking if a DSLR can compete with the output from an Alexa or Red camera, the answer is no.
Sorry but actually that doesn´t work in latest CC version at least it seems so, no it doesn´t work to import a path from Photoshop document it doesn´t show it in a layer don´t ask me why.
Great videos so far! every time i import my psd, the line doesnt come as a mask, how to do that? i've tried animating it with the stroke effect, but that doesnt give me the desired result.
+VideoRevealed for whatever reason, when i pasted a path into ae, it came in really small, comp has same size as .psd file. but i found a solution using the stroke effect, and then just matching the keyframes, thank you :)
+Visionáire - I went over pasting a path from Photoshop with the After Effects engineer and the reason is that there is no origin data coming from Photoshop so it's pasted in the centre. That's why I went with the line path method.
Though I know you're mainly an editor, as someone who is obviously more experienced in AE than myself I'm curious if you could help with a strange and enraging phenomenon I'm dealing with. I've made a video demonstrating the problem here: th-cam.com/video/S1OJQisQoX8/w-d-xo.html The gist of it is that whenever I scrub the timeline, there are a number of thin black lines that appear sporadically in the timeline view. It doesn't effect editing, but is beyond distracting. I've scoured the internet in search of an answer to this dilemma and gone through every option within AE several times - and found absolutely nothing on the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated!
+New House - What you're seeing on the Timeline is a display bug. Make sure you've updated to the latest version of After Effects. If it's still there after updating, it will be fixed in the new version coming in June. Actually, I'm well versed in After Effects, I just choose not to do a lot of VFX tutorials because there's already a ton of fantastic stuff out there.
Thanks for giving your input. However, after three months and several updates, the problem persists. There's been a thread started on the issue here, so at least I'm not alone: forums.adobe.com/thread/1977339 A commonality of everyone afflicted is their usage of a monitor that has capabilities beyond 1920 x 1080 resolution. Beyond that I don't recognize any patterns. I hate to bother a working man, but as someone with as deep an understanding of Adobe products as yourself, maybe you could find the guilty factor.
I just read the complete thread and there's nothing I can add. Usually when something is like this it's beyond end user fixing and requires an update from Adobe. And that means that you'll have to wait because if it's fixable, it will be rolled into the next update and historically that is after IBC which I would estimate in Oct. But, the IBC update has a timeline and when a bug comes up late, it may or may not make that update. Which means it would be fixed in the next update. Not sure about that one but hopefully before NAB 2017!
Thanks again for this great tutorial. I used this technique on my video here: th-cam.com/video/WYyVwIB8494/w-d-xo.html I look forward to future videos from you guys!!

Yes, I added this especially because After Effects makes it so easy. I really wish Premiere Pro understood vector graphics on the clipboard.
Hi i'm creating an animation similar to this for my course and was wondering how i could get the shadow of the plane to switch sides if the plane turned direction? great tutorial video though!
Open the Layer Styles property in the Timeline and twirl it down to see the Angle property. Just keyframe that.

Yes, it looks like they removed that image.
Thanks, this was interesting! However, would it be possible to make the camera zoom into the start location, then out for the travel and then zoom into the final location?
+Omat YTubeet - Yes. Create a new Comp, put the animated map Comp into it and animate the scale properties so it looks like zooming in and out.
Hi there. I'm stuck on the Photoshop part. Does the line in photoshop have to be a line or a path line?
The line in Photoshop is drawn with the Shape Tool that is set to Line. It's a vector path, but it's not in the Path Panel, it's a Layer.
Awesome video! Thank You!

i really enjoyed the video. Can you tell me what app you used to insert the Title animations in your TH-cam video?
Have a look at this screenshot to show how to engage the Graph Editor:

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. Its a really odd situation and I can;t get my head around it. To explain a little more; I have the project working as well as your tutorial. At present the Plane orientation value is 144 degrees and the preview window shows the Plane shows it is pointing in the right direction. No problem. Oddly when I eased in to the last keyframe it made it much better and then if i moved the end keyframe around in the timeline i could line it up correctly for the rotation. So in summary, I figured out how to fix it but I have no idea why it was doing it. :)
Really great tutorial.

Always good tutorials, cool-
Thanks!
Is there a way you can just animate the line to reveal without the need of the object (plane). I tried, by copying the path and pasting it for the position of the shape, which works, but the shape remains and moves along the path of the animation. So how would I get rid of the shape? Hope that makes sense...
Use Trim Paths. I show that here: th-cam.com/video/7HdJVC4vQxU/w-d-xo.htmlm18s

You need to update to the latest version of Premiere Pro CC.
Ouch. So the effects you obtained are not feasible in CS6? Thanks for the reply.
No.

I like how you get right down to business.

There is no one sequence size for film. It all depends on what the format for the film will be.

Hi there, your video is really great! super well explained but I am having a problem. When I set to auto-orient at 6:07, my plane seems to orient itself to some point next to the line. So it follows the path but it keeps rotating to be facing this "point". How do I fix that?
You can correct the offset by using both the Rotation and Anchor Point properties.
Thank you so much Colin! I watched the video again and managed to find my mistake! I finished my animation and it looks good!

To add new layers look for the small Add Item icon, it cooks like a small page at the bottom corner of the Layers Panel.

It's not a mask from Photoshop, it's a shape layer. When you draw with the Pen Tool in Photoshop, make sure the Option Bar shows "Shape".
From there, you need to twirl down and make sure you're selecting the Path in After Effects.
Thanks!!!!!!
That was the issue. Shape vs Path in the upper left corner when you are on pen tool!
even better than the premiere pro tutorial!
+Dala Leao - Thanks.
Can this map animation be done in CS5?
No.
If we zoom in 100% How can we make camera follow that airplane?
That's not something that can be easily explained in text but basically you can Parent the Position property of the Camera to the Position property of the plane, then use the Anchor Point property to offset the camera if needed.
Usually what someone will do is start with a Null object and in the case of the motion of the plane, they'd add a null to follow the path instead of the plane. Then you Parent each object you want to follow the path by Parenting to the Null. The benefit is, anything you do to the Null is translated to each Child object.
Now if you don't care about perfectly smooth and accurate camera motion, then just manually add Position keyframes to the Camera.
Donated! 🤗🤗🤗
Because your videos are great
Thanks so much for your support. I've missed a few of your comments and I'm sorry for that. I actually paid for TubeBuddy but it missed so many comments.
love you tutorial
Thanks.
hello +VideoRevealed
i just wanted to ask if you could do a video on subtitling on premiere pro.
if you could show me the best way or the most practical or professional way to it.
i'm not really a fan of the built-in closed captioning in premiere pro.
please teach me sir. :-)
create a basic format for how you want the text to look by creating a still text (not rolling credit), then for all the other lines of text you need for the person's words, just right click on the original text in the media box where everything is stored for the project and select "duplicate". Drag and drop the new duplicated text (itll probably say "Text copy 1" or whatever you renamed the text to in the media bin) onto the timeline then click it in order to edit what the words say. Repeat previous steps as needed.
*Tip-make sure you name each piece of text something different in the media panel, otherwise when youre months into the edit and youre looking for a specific
line of text and they all say "copy 1, 2, 3, 4, etc" itll mess up your mind and confuse the crap out of you
Anyways, happy cutting! Hope atleast one line of that novel up there made any sense^ Im really confusing a lot of the time.
+Zach Blackburn thank you Zach. i didn't know we could duplicate the text from the media panel on the bottom left. saves a lot of time though.
Yeah! Definitely. Preferably i have my media in the top left because when i began editing 5 years ago i started with Sony Vegas Pro 12 and they had theres setup that way, so i kind of just generalized the things I was talking about so it could be more easily understood.
Glad I could help though! Editing is my life haha
+Zach Blackburn - Thanks for the tips!
when we are rendering a film for hall. what is the print 1020p, 720p, 2k, 4k,
+dipak das - I'll answer all your questions in this comment.
1. There is not single a sequence for film output; you can work with 2k or 4k or even HD for some film festivals.
2. Usually the venue where you're presenting your film will give you the specifications for output. It's important to note that Premiere Pro can export a Digital Cinema Package: helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/how-to/export-digital-cinema-package.html
Thanks of lot
can you please tell me where i get DCP
i.imgur.com/FzVIJGZ.png
It is possible DSLR to professional film making
If you're asking if you can use a DSLR and export something to be seen in a theatre, the answer is yes. If you are asking if a DSLR can compete with the output from an Alexa or Red camera, the answer is no.
VideoRevealed Ok. Thanks for reply..
Sorry but actually that doesn´t work in latest CC version at least it seems so, no it doesn´t work to import a path from Photoshop document it doesn´t show it in a layer don´t ask me why.
How did you draw your path in Photoshop? If the line was created using pixels, then it's not a path.
Amazing
Thanks.
thank you
You're welcome.
Awesome
Thanks.
You know your stuff and teach it well ... keep up the good work from one teacher to another
Great videos so far!
every time i import my psd, the line doesnt come as a mask, how to do that? i've tried animating it with the stroke effect, but that doesnt give me the desired result.
+Visionáire - You need to create the line in Photoshop using the Line Shape Tool.
That's why I went with the line path method.
nice
Thanks.
Why not just create the line in AE instead of photoshop. Larry
You have your title wrong...Its an After effects tut not a Premiere Pro...Great tutorial though... I must learn After effects
+Let's Make A Video - Thanks for catching that, I just updated the title. Did you watch the map animation in Premiere Pro that I posted last week?
6:46 SWEEET MAMA!!
Thanks.
Though I know you're mainly an editor, as someone who is obviously more experienced in AE than myself I'm curious if you could help with a strange and enraging phenomenon I'm dealing with. I've made a video demonstrating the problem here: th-cam.com/video/S1OJQisQoX8/w-d-xo.html
The gist of it is that whenever I scrub the timeline, there are a number of thin black lines that appear sporadically in the timeline view.
There's been a thread started on the issue here, so at least I'm not alone:
forums.adobe.com/thread/1977339
A commonality of everyone afflicted is their usage of a monitor that has capabilities beyond 1920 x 1080 resolution.
Ah well, so it goes. Thanks again for giving you 2¢ as an Adobe professional; this is a great channel that I'm more than happy to support.
Thanks again for this great tutorial. I used this technique on my video here:

I look forward to future videos from you guys!!
Fantastic job, I love the crabs!
Thanks so much!
