6:46 You can see Rippetoe's eyes light up when he talks about helping an elderly woman be able to walk without a walker. Underneath his sarcastic, rough exterior, Rippetoe really cares about helping people.
Did not expect a 315 deadlift out of nowhere! Strong. More people should do the big 3 on a regular basis. Ditch the curls and get strong and healthy! Great video.
John True. I do all of them and constantly recommend them to all my friends. As of late I found that the push press really helped me increase my poverty bench to a slightly less shitty bench of 264lbs/120kg. So I've mainly done push press with OHP as an acessory exercise, but I think that in the long run I'll probably go back to OHP as my main lift just for the raw strength it builds.
PeterPwn! It's the best way to gain strength and build muscle, there's also some studies where it shows that doing 5 reps or 12 will net the same hypertrophy, that's pretty revolutionary. Doing machines and dumbbell exercises only will do nothing for someone that doesn't roid, compounds, dips, pullups and a few acessories is the way to go! I'd suggest switching to OHP as a main lift instead of acessory, it works all 3 heads of the shoulder and gives you raw power, pretty fun to OHP your girlfriend, girls get impressed and then sad when their boyfriends fail it haha
John I know. Compounds are also a lot more fun to train. I have no idea how anybody can enjoy machine training in the long run. I'd have to worry about getting one before overhead pressing my girlfriend...^^
I love this guy, there's something about gruff honesty that fits his profession and cracks me up (especially the deadlift video). If I was closer to Texas I would be in this gym. Please keep the Rippetoe videos coming AOM!
Wow this is awesome. I've made leaps and bounds in my weightlifting training ever since picking up Starting Strength a few months back. Forget Schwarzenegger - this guy is my lifting hero. Looking forward to the upcoming instructional series with him.
It was great to hang out with Mark for the day. He helped me make a lot of corrections in my technique- particularly the squat. We've got a series coming out with him on how to perform the squat, deadlift, and press so stay tuned!
***** Check out the book and the companion DVD. The DVD goes over the basic lifts (including power clean) with actual students so you can see the progression. Well worth the money!!!
That man knows exactly what he is talking about, i just recently started training and have directed ny efforts towards compound exercises and it work wonders. Im looking forward to see the next vid. Great job AOM!
I have decided to start barbell training. It is such a challenge - which I love. My form is pretty bad right now but I'm working on it - I can't wait to see my progress in 6 months from now.
Brett, you are doing great things with this channel. Not only do you have much wisdom of your own to impart, but you also know how to find others who are at the top of their game and who have great wisdom of their own to impart. Keep it up!
I trained wrestling in high school under coach mitchell who was bros with all the Brandon guys we lived in Tampa which was not even 20 minutes from Brandon I never knew how insane they really were at wrestling and man these videos remind me of those guys and those days in the gym I totally get that old school tried and true vibe from mark love it
Hey Brett, you should consider lifting in a powerlifting meet. It will change your training, it has with me, because you're lifting for a an actual event. It's different then just training for health, looks, or strength. You also know for a fact that you hit your numbers in the hardest possible conditions: in a meet with certified judges. Just consider it, maybe even go to a meet to see what it's all about. I have a blast at my meets- I've done three. Powerlifting is great and you should deffinately try it. This channel is just a video log I use with my coach to go over form programming etc. I'm not any sort of personal training company or anything like that.
Super stoked for this! My weight slowly crept up over the past 2 years after stopping CrossFit and healthy eating. I went from a healthy and fit 170 to now pushing 230. I just bought some squat stands to complete my 3rd floor apartment porch gym. Excited for this series!
Subscribed. I'm in the middle of #StartingStrength again. Learning lots and having fun doing it. Plus, I enjoy Mark's attitude on trainings and methods. Art of Manliness
I agree with his take on the fittness industry he teaches people for longevity the fitness industry is all about business they don't care about how long you'll be training or what you'll be like in 20 years he does keep up the excellent work
I had no idea that Rippetoe is just up the road from Dallas. I've been to Wichita Falls several times to ride HotterN' Hell but never stopped at his Gym.
It has been getting popular the past few years. I'd say Crossfit has done the most to really boost the popularity of lifting weights. Before Crossfit, most Americans never heard of a snatch and clean and jerk. Nowadays it's common in the American vernacular. Even Rippetoe credits Crossfit for popularizing weightlifting and lifting weights in general across America.
Le awesome. Starting working out again after not doing much for a long while. This video is a great reminder that I need to stick to the basics and use barbells more often.
I've never read Starting Strength, though I've meant to. I'll likely order a copy pretty soon here. I agree with Mark that gyms, magazines, etc. are only meant to be profitable, not to make you fit. I also agree that exercise variety is pretty useless, and compound movements are king. Overall, a great video from one of the best in the game.
I'd say those are some of the most underrated exercises nowadays. I found nothing works my traps as well as hang cleans! And sometimes there's just something really exciting about a short, explosive burst compared to a slow, grinding rep.
I use to train with a national level bodybuilder named Trey Smith who had tourettes, depression and pretty bad OCD. I know this is old post but hope you are still doing good
@@lonle6506 Thank you for your supporting words. I am currently feeling happy! I am about to hop in the car and get a dishwasher. It will be a good summer filled with barbecue activity :)

Follow the programme. Follow advice on nutrition and recovery and you will get very much stronger and very quickly. After 6 months you will inhabit a very different but very much improved body.
Barbells and dumbbells works synergistically the stabilizer muscles.... it takes balance and coordination... conversely the biomechanical correct machines that eliminates stabilizer muscles... machines have many advantages over free weights... you'll get a faster warm up... less over all unnecessary fatigue... they also serve as a training aid!

Vicarious video gainzzzzz!
I visit Mark Rippetoe at his gym in Wichita Falls, TX to talk barbell training.
Hyacinthe KHODJA If Mr. Rippetoe was assertive when our guy performed a right squat, I am not sure what to expect after that deadlift.

This video has a life-changing potential.
Starting Strength is the program I wish I had when I was a 125 lbs teenager.
Same here!
This series motivated me to get into starting strength! My squat was 125x3x5 starting and it's currently 205x3x5! In just over 6 weeks!
What's the update?
Nice!
You couldn't interview better person. Mark is a legend. Huge thumbs up.
Rippetoe's Starting Strength is one of the best beginners programs out there!
Starting Strength is a great program for beginners, highly recommend to follow his philosophy.
Well done Brett! Nearly 200,000 subscribers! A well deserved effort for such a helpful and classy channel - keep up the phenomenal work.
