"[Galileo Station is] something that could only exist in a video game" Seriously? The game is set in 3300AD. You think in a millennia and a half we still won't be able to build a giant space station around the moon?
You must be one of those optimist types that think we may survive the next anything from two to fifty years years without world war and blowing ourselves and our little planet to hell :).
We are able to build a giant space station around the moon now. It's just pointless....so why bother? I at least hope in 3300 AD (why would you even have AD there) we'll be smart enough not to waste resources on things like that. I do hope we can at least get a space elevator in my lifetime. If we are going to be doing some Interstellar stuff, I'd think that would be a solid foundation. It should at least make it a lot easier to travel within our solar system.
They really could update planet textures a bit. The samy Gas giants often look very unreal. The added a bit moe diversity to landable planets but could do more there as well.
No doubt frontier development can't just plug them in willy nilly as the universe simulator is one of the most complex parts of the game. Hope we get all the planets from kepler and stars from gaia some day.

It might be more expensive in ∆v, but what if you used the moon station as a refueling point? Using fuel that has been derived from the moon itself? Wouldn't it be cheaper in $$ even if it's more expensive in ∆v, given that moving that fuel off the moon would be much much cheaper than off the Earth? Or better yet, moving that fuel from the moon to LEO, using that moon station as a in between depot for it? Know of anyone who has done the math on all that?
I used to play E:D a lot, but since some update many months ago my frame rate dropped from ~30 FPS to ~19 FPS, which makes it kind of unplayable for me.
Problem with elite is it does not handle non-round objects in its procedural generation at all. Even in sol you wont find a accurate Haumea or any such dwarf/planetoid. Infact its been known to "glitch" in alot of systems ignoring the roche limit well beyond rational bounds (as such that planets are physically touching without effect.)
Aliens will find the golden record but play it back at 45 rpm so they will think we all sound high pitched. "Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?"
This ship you're flying made me think: How do TV ships like the Enterprise, it the Mellinieum Falcon stop, or even slow down, if they never turn backwards. Dropping out of warp would imply that there's some kind of energetic atmosphere out in space that stops them if they don't continually expend energy.
Space operas and space westerns have space as a metaphor for the sea, with space fighters being a metaphor for early airplanes, so space in them behaves as a kind of a hybrid of water and air.
Star Trek´s warp drive does not move the ship it moves the space around it, there is no speed, no acceleration or inertia in Newtonian sense. I does not violate any know laws of physics, but is estimated to require power equivalent to Sun´s output. :-(
Simple! A warp drive doesn't make a ship go super duper fast, it makes the space in front of the ship shorter so it can cross more of it in the same amount of time! Hence "warp". Dropping out of warp just means returning the ship's relation to space back to normal, resulting in an apparent and sudden loss of speed.
@@Roxfox a ship dropping out of warp still has the momentum/speed it had on entering. It still needs to break, or at lest that's what I understand. It's not at all like in the movies.
+Scott Manely, the English language stole Geyser from Icelandic- where "Geysir" is the quintessential example for European (natural philosopher/precursors to actual scientists of modernity.prior to the renaissance or exploration 18th-century large expansion in expeditions to the Americas (before the entire continent was explored). There are examples of natural hot springs and their gases in Europe itself, though none as large or permanent in the sense of dependability and event size (a normal geothermal hot spring may be colorful, even in England and Greece, for instance, such hot springs exist) as in the Geysir, Geyser site in Iceland. But the actual Geysir is the quintessential geyser because of its regularity, the extent studied and the classification of other examples of its mechanism throughout the explored world where in English we applied the name "geyser" to those systems with the geothermal and geological features involving a classic set of a hot spring where you get a gas trap due to the geological structure of the region that boils material as it travels to the surface. The boiling creates gas pressure that eventually is released and creates a sudden turbulent acceleration to the ejecta/fluid flow resulting in a jet of that gas and generally ~100deg C water heavily contaminated with volatiles/geochemist that are characteristic of a given region of the planet and what type of exotic life is found near its surface, (such as thermophiles in Iceland, and a massive biodiversity in some instances around these types of active hot springs (where rings of different microbiota give a rainbow-like appearance to the aqueous interface in some of the locations where geysers are prominent geological feature sets- outside that single sample not too far outside Reykjavik in Iceland. from the lower strata of the earths geological strata where depths or other geologic forces are at work -constant plate movement and so on which actually heats the entire island of iceland providng its residents with completely renewable energy resources and more than ample amounts for them to not need to pay for central heating, nor much for electricity despite the climate of the nation being anything but static. the heating of the island from below melts surface glaciers and snow which then is used to provide the remaining power in hydroelectric utility sites. They have an island that is naturally set up for the "hydrogen economy" as in situ production could and has been done at each petrol station during the era of hype around hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles, especially with the heavy taxes in the nation on gas, and the more recent price jumps at the tank, which set people to the point of making sales in the nation on fuel cell vehicles which are in the best case of Hydrogen- only 80% effective at conversion of potential chemical energy of the electrolytic cells to electricity which then is used to do the kinetic work of running 2-4 electric engines in a similar manner to an electric vehicle if it could be simply refueled, rather than charged, though the trade-off is a bit large seeing as the efficiency of the fuel cell makes a lithium-ion battery more attractive when the cost of electricity in the nation is extremely low now that such battery tech if not for its relative mass manufacturing deficits in recent US Cars like $TSLA. Fuel cells themselves if energy for water splitting reactions are not a problem, or bypassed as they are able to get away with in Iceland due to ISRU in many places or driving the water-splitting reaction with the abundance of energy resources on the island are much easier to understand and construct. They would essentially be using the same components in many proposals that the electric cars of modernity use, but replacing that complex battery, -the fuel cell has a history tied really with that of manned space flight- that really started going in the early space race era as per a use. These days they still find use cases in such regions even though if you are in the US you have no infrastructure to support the H2 economy- therefore hear little of it outside the realm of manned space vehicles in which they still have a safety margin that allows them to find use cases over lithium-ion batteries due to the complexities involved in constructing cylindrical variants of such systems that have theoretically lower fire risk, but are not time-tested. Most in the US were left with a bad taste after the Samsung note problem that had their preferred device banned from air flight use due to the several cases of fire and explosive damage in the Note series device (I had my intl Galaxy s6 at the time seized by the not bright authorities aboard an aircraft that I was trying to listen to audiobooks from during transit between two locations in that 2017 time period as the airline personnel could not tell the difference- assuming if it said 'Samsung' it meant "explosive") and found its way from those electronics to more recent patents of apple for its devices as a potential battery supplanting tech. Fuel cells in space flight would actually make a interesting video if you haven't already touched on it- especially as most people have only heard of them in the context of purposefully disabling the fuel cells that were not of those that are used by the public in most situations or power the massive warehouses of modernity in forklift fuel cell power (where the use is widespread of modern hydrogen/PEM Fuel cells as a source of power), but the variety in the Apollo 13 incident where the unique reaction valve system permitted a leak of O2 from the debilitated system to pass through one of the three fuel cells (making the rate of O2 loss unacceptable without closing the valve and thus shutting down the Fuel Cell, canning a fair amount of the power supply in the process [due to the unique type and use case of the fuel cells used in the Apollo program] where O2 was in the loop of the electrochemical cells. TL;DR I digress here is the etymological root from google of "GEYSER": "late 18th century: from Icelandic Geysir, the name of a particular spring in Iceland; related to geysa ‘to gush.’ "- Google (-input query: "Define geyser")
Hey Scott, you know how it's so damned hard to find the Voyager probes in the current game unless you know exactly where to look? You can find them with the new scanning mechanics that're in the beta build. I think you'll get a kick out of the new exploration stuff. Fly safe! o7
Haha. 5 SLS modules. That will take just 3-5 years to complete given the current launch cadence for the SLS. Then you have the delta-V issues mixed with the fact that in orbit, aside from doing slightly more heavy duty radiation testing, you can do pretty much whatever you do in lunar orbit in LEO. Also if the goal is just radiation testing why not put something in orbit smack in the middle of a Van Allen belt?
About the pronunciation of the word "geyser," in the US the word gy-sur would describe steam/fluids venting out of a hole in the surface as you showed with Enceladus. Gee-zer, spelled g-e-e-z-e-r, is a older person not in tune with the times and stuck in their own ways - usually seeing things only their way as right. They are also inflexible about new things and do not speak well of younger folk, (you noticed I gave almost the same definition three times, which is exactly how a geezer would say something--telling you three different times what they could say just once to make sure you understood them!)
"Geyser" Is derived from old Norse. There is only one hot spring in the world named "Geysir". It is located in southwest Iceland, and gave his name to all other hot springs in the world. Needless to say, it annoys me greatly when people call any other hot spring "Geyser". It is the same as calling any tablet PC an Ipad, or any 4x4 vehicle a Jeep.

Hey Scott, thanks for the ED Tourist Tour - and just a random ED / RealWorld question: Couldn't there be stars (not planets) out there with ring systems by themself? Should be possible, I think, maybe KIC 8462852 is one...
There are ringed stars in Elite, yes. Don't see why in the real universe those couldn't exist either.
I stopped playing Elite about 2 years ago, shortly after Engineers update... but after watching this I so want to go back.
They are currently in beta for a new chapter which should be released by the end of the month that fundamentally changes quite a few game mechanics, including exploration, mining and squadrons. I'm out of it myself currently catching up on other games I've bought but not got round to playing, but will return to Elite soon. It may be worth another look for you too.
I wish there were more to discuss/watch. Also haven't seen any new videos from Amy. I guess after a while space seems kind of repetitive but then again there are all these interesting little bits and things like that happen and are worked on and done very well though out and procedurally.
i like the clever editing trick that made it seem like you made a micro-jump. :P
Did you ever try Elite in VR (eg. Oculus Rift)? It's gorgeous and immersive in VR! A whole new experience.
Hey Scott, how about using a geysir for hydro-electrical power? Just a thought.
Is this in beta? You need to try the new exploration mechanics which is a vast improvement! Give it a try if you have the time. I think FDEV is progressing in the right direction now. Great vid Scott!
Whoops no you didn't play in beta. Please give it a whirl. I would love to hear your impressions about the new mechanics. Thanks.
@@spartansmsu93noob54 You can tell it's not beta because his ship name shows up on the HUD. It's missing in the current build, still no word on whether or not it's a bug last I heard. :P
I wonder if the new FSS system will show the Sol probes as points of interest, instead of having to fly to them... might have to have a fly out there.
@@CynicalOldDwarf I think the FSS will IF you tune the scanner to match technology signals. I plan on trying it when I get the chance.
@@CynicalOldDwarf It does, actually!
What sort of mechanics / space craft would be needed to get in to orbit round Pluto, I mean are we talking having to turn round and hit break engines halfway there... nearly there.. ? Also explanation of the difficulty to do the same with the sun from earth
Simplest solution: play Kerbal, learn some basic orbital mechanics and discover the answer yourself.
I love the x52Pro! Nice to see a reference to this HOTAS in your footage. :)
6:21 - 6:32 Why would it take 1000 years to get to where Voyager 1 is if you went the speed of Voyager 1? (I assume that means to reach its current position, not to catch it, which would be "never" unless Voyager is on an oscillating path, right?)
Because the game takes place in 3304
@@Batavia2000 Ah, thanks
Around 23 Scott M indicates how the drop in star intensity indicates a planet. What if the planet circles 90 degrees with respect to our observation? I assume we can only detect planets that are directly between Kepler and the star? Is that true?
"[Galileo Station is] something that could only exist in a video game"
Seriously? The game is set in 3300AD. You think in a millennia and a half we still won't be able to build a giant space station around the moon?
You must be one of those optimist types that think we may survive the next anything from two to fifty years years without world war and blowing ourselves and our little planet to hell :).
Or Babylon 5 [what, nobody noticed the similarity?]
@@mikldude9376 This is set in 3303 (the game date at release in 2015 was 3300), therefore that can't have happened in this hypothetical universe.
Have Isaac Arthur reach pay a visit and sort him out!
5:12 did not expect that
Same for me at 5:20
11:30 Scott I think it depends on how long you leave the enchiladas in your fridge
They really could update planet textures a bit. The samy Gas giants often look very unreal.
The added a bit moe diversity to landable planets but could do more there as well.
Does the game model Milky Way graphically or is it just static 3D skybox out there?
Skybox is generated dynamically for each star system, so you can see constellations change
Scott Manley, you are the coolest.
B5 reference, great maker!
Why does it make a boom coming out of frame shift?
Because the audio designer for Elite is a genius
any link to the NASA TV episode?
What was the name of the program? I'd like to catch it on the repeat.
I guess the Gaia mission will add a lot of stars to the game universe in the future then.
No doubt frontier development can't just plug them in willy nilly as the universe simulator is one of the most complex parts of the game. Hope we get all the planets from kepler and stars from gaia some day.
imagine if starling get projected into ED :D 12k sattelites arround earth :D
If you like the different languages when meeting voyager 1, you can get different in cab languages for your computer in the game
ED that talks to you and the space stations computer and the news service called galnet
You know, that Imperial Eagle of yours really looks an awful lot like a Romulan Raptor from Startrek.. :) So i suppose imperial eagle is correct in a double sense.
Dawn has gone silent between the recording and the release of the video
Still in orbit, however.
The word Geyser is derived from the icelandic word: Geysir
That's why it's spelled like that!
Europe thought of words before the U.S. was discovered, so not all words are most suitable for y'all ;)
Have you had a chance to check out the new 3.3 beta Scott?
Just got judged because I watch your channel as i sit on break and eat food and learn about space😅 Thanks for making videos I find entertaining and interesting!
21:11 So, a bit like a solar-keel?
Scott you are such a great story teller, you should do audio books.
Only played Elite a little when it was launched, don’t remember it looking this good!
In the latest chapter which is currently in beta (and which Scott isn't playing here), they have updated the lighting and colour gradients and it will make this look even better once launched. The sound design for me is its triumph though, it really is stunning.
Hey Scott, you should make a video analyzing First Man and identify it’s enumerable inaccuracies for us! That would be much appreciated!
I've been a fan of Zubrin's since the 90's and his book 'the case for mars'. It was not only a great plan, but very enlightening on the travails of space travel. NASA should have read it.
Awesome game, You should do an Odyssey update @Scott Manley, I didnt catch your ign either darn lol
I love just exploring the galaxy and visiting all the places in this VAST galaxy
The Battle of Serenity-Valley'. Just didn't know that it took(will take place) on Charon....;)
inb4 conspiracy nuts use this to say "NASA ARE JUST HELPING RUN THE SIMULATION!!"
I mean....we could be living a simulation for all we know
Here you are, referencing the nuts before even the nuts get around to it. You must be thinking of them a lot.
The NSA are controlling the minds of everyone; so that no one believes in government conspiracies. I know this for a fact because John Nash told me so.
Funny I recently watched Isaac Arthur's video on simulation hypothesis... I recommend his channel, lots of very interesting stuff about universe and future of space exploration.
I indeed watch Isaac too. John Godier is alright too, but I prefere longer form videos personally.
Namewarvergeben - It's called a joke. You clearly didn't get it.
Scott can a object be propelled to the speed of light by multiple gravity assist's?
Short Answer = No nothing can be propelled to the speed of light.
@@cutty02 so how close can a object get then?
Wow.. that Romanian language message took me by surprise
This section also happened to have three close neighbours: Dutch (2nd), Flemish (5th) and German (6th, last in this sample) :D I like listening to all those recordings. Romanian sounds nice.
@@namewarvergeben The Bulgarian also took me by surprise
the german is, as expected :short, formal and boring
great, so the aliens know where not to land...
@@namewarvergeben #5 is Afrikaans, not Flemish.
EDIT: Interestingly enough the NASA website doesn't list a message in Afrikaans as being on the Voyager Golden Record, from which you can conclude that either their list is incomplete or that FDEV rerecorded the messages and went a bit further in language inclusion. And yes, in the case it is not Afrikaans (and I can assure you it is), there isn't another Dutch approximate listed either.
EDIT 2: FDEV made their own recordings. There's different languages, better sound quality, and recordings done by other sexes than the originals.
@@lennardodavinci6350 Yes. Fast, polite and efficient.
I haven't played Elite in probably a year so I don't really know what's been going on. I also never really figured out how to get a permit to go to Sol... I might have to fire that up again soon.
Need to get a decent rank with the Federation, then you get it. I've been out the game for a few months myself, but this latest chapter in beta now has some fantastic additions. I'll be returning to it soon too.
15:30 isnt Enceladus acctually smaller than Ceres?
It is. It's also a moon and not a dwarf planet.
Is the connection that both of them haven't been in space?
I found out about this game today and now i see you have a video on it.
The description online said the whole milky way (what we know of it) is 1:1 scale in game.
12:00 Isn't Ganymede the largest moon in the Solar System?
Wow this was amazing!
If / when there are people living on Titan, would they be called titans?
Yes ;/
VOYAGER - how easily can you find it Scott? I’ve been out 3 times looking for them, unsuccessfully, if you know how ago find them perhaps put up a video on how? Thanks. Liked this video a lot and saw the twitch nasa one too, I think you impressed them with Elite and that engineer chap seemed very interested, I’d bet he went away and bought it, he especially seemed keen on the VR aspect.
Do you still play this game?
I'm a simple man... I hear a B5 reference, I click "like"!
Asp Exploder doesnt come with a hangar to SRV, you have to buy that first XD But other wise I understand what you mean with it
I used to play E:D a lot, but since some update many months ago my frame rate dropped from ~30 FPS to ~19 FPS, which makes it kind of unplayable for me.
You can probably just change the settings in favour of framerate sacrificing minor details.
RIP Kepler, you were a promise of what humanity was capable of.
Ariel in the sol system is a moon from Uranus and it has a lot more detailed edges and steep valleys
if you didn't know (which i don't think so), wait for the coming chapter 4. i was so disappoint on this game but then it got a huge reboot.
Yep, the devs would love to fix this.
Maybe you should learn to differentiate Science from Fiction in a TV Science-Fiction show and don't ask silly questions?
You entered Titan City upside down.
TL;DR
I digress here is the etymological root from google of "GEYSER":
"late 18th century: from Icelandic Geysir, the name of a particular spring in Iceland; related to geysa ‘to gush.’ "- Google (-input query: "Define geyser")
3:00 Serenity valley?
Voyager 1,2 and Far Horizons will be easy to find when 3.3 goes live 'cos they show up in the newfangled FSS so you can head straight for 'em.
Hey Scott, you know how it's so damned hard to find the Voyager probes in the current game unless you know exactly where to look? You can find them with the new scanning mechanics that're in the beta build. I think you'll get a kick out of the new exploration stuff. Fly safe! o7
Maybe as a joke or feature, they should add the Apollo Command Module as a ship you can fly in Elite: Dangerous
I have the base game of Elite Dangerous and I feel like I miss out on a ton of stuff because I can't afford the DLC :(
They have sales from time to time, around holidays.
On that last point Van Allen radiation conditions are very different from deep space.
Ok. Must admit I don't know enough about that stuff.
Mp57navy thanks! It's good to see another sailor with knowledge, appreciate you sharing that!! (USN 76-82)
I didn't know voyager had a greeting in my native language (Afrikaans) it plays right when Scott focused in on the golden platter.
That's epic!
5:11 That's Romanian.
Also, how cool does the Cruiser look next to Voyager. It looks like an alien spaceship. Very cool. Who knows, maybe one that someone, or something will find it.
The fact that I couldn't explore the local solar system in the game was a killer for me. Had to grind to just get access, and never really figured out how.
You are not the only one. Eventually I got access, explored a few days and uninstalled. This happened over a year ago.
Getting access:
1 - get exploration ship
2 - follow road to riches site and get data for about a dozen systems
3 - sell data to federation faction.
4 - do federation rank missions.
Man I used to play elite dangerous all the time. I remember that it took forever to get the permission to be allowed to jump into our solar system
