Why this game doesn't have autopilot for long repetitive chains of hyperspace jumps will never make sense for me. I hate having to turn slightly and press J every 45 seconds just to get somewhere when even 1980's era autopilot could handle that. It demands attention without satisfying it.
(I know I'm 2 years too late to reply, but,) I personally like the travel, I enjoy seeing space go by and having to interact with the game just reminds me that it is a game with things to do in each system, even if it isn't much, but I feel like they should definitely add some kind of autopilot module for people who don't get a sick enjoyment out of it, or for when I just don't feel like it, which is fairly rare.
I don't think 1980's AP could do that. All they did was set and hold heading and altitude. Although I'm certain that it could be automated, you're right about that. Nower days elite has the neutron highway which is a little bit more involved.
If this is a rotating black hole, you are quite probably already inside the event horizon it at that point. You would most certainly be inside the ergosphere. Ofc, since it's so active, it is probably more luminous than any stars you are likely to encounter. So I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't more oompf to the center of the galaxy.
the event horizon of Sagittarius A* starts around 11 million kilometers (the exact number is not known given the conflicting estimates on mass ranging from 4.3 to 3.5 million solar masses) out from its center of mass which converts to 36.7 light seconds. However the game is probably counting the distance from the object starting from its "surface"/event horizon.
InfinityToPlanck 65 LS is 1.95e+10 m. The event horizon of Sgtt A* could be as low as 1.0e+10 m provided its mass is on the lower estimates AND it has close zero rotation - the last of which I think is highly unlikely. A rotating bh will have different extention depending on what axis you are measuring, with the smallest number being equal to the swarzchild radius and the larger number close to double that. It did seem as though he was approaching from the side (I think its likely that sgtt A* will have its spin vector aligned fairly closely to the galaxy). But you may be right that the number quoted in game is measured from the event horizon, not the center.
Snagabott I was assuming zero rotation just to simplify the math especially as the angular velocity of Sagittarius A* is even fuzzier than its mass. I said 1.1e 7 kilometers which is 1.1e 10 meters. You are probably correct that the event horizon starts closer to 2e 10 meters.
In this video the black hole was actually 0.5 mil solar masses, which means the schwarzchild radius is actually just 5 light-seconds in the game. (as he said, the game is apparently not completely up to date with these numbers)
You can use multiple lasers to speed up the extraction, a better distributor to keep them powered, and most importantly, collector limpets - drones that pick up all the fragments for you for processing. Your "scoop, charge, peek at map" technique is a very familiar one - I suppose all of us who are out in the far black fall into something similar as a travelling habit sooner or later. I've not been 'home' since January when I started making "Turjan's Travels", but I'm jumping my way back now finally, before we get company in our galaxy. And as I can't be certain whether such company will wave and say 'hi' or try to eat my face off, I'm thinking it's wiser to get home before I have to find out the answer to that question the hard way!
Scott, at the start where you manually power down your frame shift drive and Fuel scoop to use the power for your Mining lasers. You could instead change the priority of those systems (The number on the right between the < > arrows) to higher numbers than everything else. This lets your ship automatically power down those systems when your ship tries to draw more power than it has available (When you draw your mining lasers for example) and then automatically power those systems back up when your power draw drops again (When you stow your mining lasers) instead of you having to do it manually.
Eve F2P... That's like saying World of Warcraft is F2P cause that's basically what it is. An unlimited trial with restrictions, most likely the same restrictions on skills as the current trial if not even more restricted due to the unlimited nature of it.
@Scott. You may know this already, but you could have increased the power priority on the Fuel Scoop FSD and to have the automatically shut down when you deploy hardpoints.
Awesome video, Scott! I thoroughly enjoy all your astronomical awesomeness, but as I play both ED on PC and XBONE, seeing what is possible, from an educational perspective, is great. I'll be using ED to teach my kids space, and the distances etc. I've never been to the galactic core myself, but seeing the difference in the number of stars, just shows how well Braben and the team team did their research. I stopped playing it regularly after 60 hours, but I feel like if I enjoy a game for 60 hours I've gotten my money's worth. Theres only a few games I play that have ever gotten me to stick around that long.
20DarkWidow90 I know, I feel like people try only what was given to the, then quit, and never actually go exploring, wonder about some of the cool stuff in the galaxy, do CG's, and other stuff. but idk man
I went to Jaque's too. I also started heading to the galactic centre afterwards and see a few sights. Unfortuantly I "tried" to "land" on a 5G planet and took my hull down to 13%.I quickly made a beeline back for home.
Scott! You should get in touch with the Galactic Nebula Expedition. We're heading toward Jaques, and will be there Oct 29th. Would be awesome if you could meet up with us at one of our way points!
I journeyed to the center once. You almost have to be doing something in the background to keep yourself sane. My journey to and from Sag A were separated by at least 3 months because I had absolutely no interest in turning right back around and making that trip again.
Scott on the rote finder slide your cargo slider to the right as the simulated weight increases you jump distance when routing will drop to match it (for granular fuel saving)
You mentioned in your video that you were unsatisfied with the fastest and economical route options. Just Below those is a section titled "Cargo Mass" on the Navigation tab of the galaxy map. If you adjust the cargo tonnage up on this screen it will reduce your maximum Jump range down. This allows you to set your "ideal weight" - so if your ship has a 30LY capacity jump drive but you want to only make steps of 15LY you adjust the slider for cargo mass until your jump range is reduced to 15LY then plot your route. now none of your hops will be over 15LY. If that's what you meant by fastest/ecomomical route then fair play :)
I'm going to be starting my Elite: Dangerous journey for the first time this weekend on XB1! I honestly can't wait. Any tips for a new player, like things I should get into? Exploring seems fun, but so does blowing up other ships. Also, as far as packs you can buy for the game... which ones would you recommend?
i think you should firstly try a bit of everything, i have farmed tons of credits by hunting bounty. But i think now its best to just follow community goals as they push you to different things as time go on, yet you need some sort of good ship to get rewards
Hey there, Scott! A pro exploration tip- throttle down after your FSD begins charging, and then use the system map. That way, if you find something good, your ship won't jump before you're ready. When you leave the system map, all you have to do is throttle back up and you'll make the H-jump instantaneously. Cheers!
A bit late to the party, but for what it's worth if you launch collector limpets in untargetted mode they'll sit around and wait for chunks to pick up, and mop them up repeatedly for a certain duration, much like the "space net" you were describing. Only issue is that they can't be told not to pick something up, so if you try to dump excess limpets or low value minerals they'll immediately try and pick it up again.
I wonder if there's a way to spin a black hole up to such a speed that it flies apart (Highly unlikely) or reduce its density by spreading out the matter. I think that spin might be one of the forces keeping black holes from collapsing into near infinity.
birds crapping on your statues? fish? hahahaha loved it. you are WAY out there!!! i should get in my asp and head to the edge of the galaxy somewhere and plot how far i would be from you.
Don't worry, Scott, fish won't crap on your statue underwater. You'll just grow an algae beard with gravity-defying locks of kelp reaching skyward from atop your glorious head.
Mr Manely I heard that asteroids in a belt are usually not within viewing distance of one another, due to how huge space is. Is this the case for a non-planetary asteroid belt? (As in, the rings of Saturn are fairly compact, but the asteroid belt in the Sol system is very diffuse.)
Scott, you talk about a script to inject Netflix into VR during the video. Do you have any links or info on this? I would love to see more. In-flight entertainment would be amazing!
prospector drones also increase the yeild by about 3x, you can scan a bunch and as long as you remember the good ones, i tend to find a patch and scan every asteroid in range, you can hunt for the painite, which in a few systems sells for 74k per ton, platinumm which is a nice 20k, i try to find ones with 30+%. Spent about 2 hours mining and took 53 painite back for a nice 3.5 mil, plus all the other stuff i sold locally it was a good 6+ million for 2 hours work. What this game needs is a place to call home, a base you can collect for upgrades, store components, swap out parts on your ship in your own workshop where you can setup for multiple situations without having to rebuy and find the best stock at the best stations.
SCOTT MADE ELITE VIDEOS??? I just installed the game and greatly enjoy it. and i have been watching Scott for a while now, but i never realised that he made gaming videos at all!
SC gamescon disappointed me... but ED gamescon was actually rather nice... mostly because of the CQC arena structures coming into live game and mot of all, non-sequence stars having a rather beautiful appearance + a game-mechanic associated with them.
+creaturebrown the SC PU and Elite are both having similar long term goals but thy have different development strategies. Elite launched a fully functioning bare bones sandbox game and bolted features on over time. SC's is developing all its features in an alpha state with the goal of having all their features in the game when launched. It's a lot easier to get excited about forthcoming features in Elite because we know they'll be here sooner.
+CeresIsAwesome anyone who backed the kickstarter got it. I bought alpha access to the game. Cost me 200 pounds (~$300) was worth every penny in the end because I got to meet the devs.
I'm surprised you has spare power in that built for a refinery/laser at all man loo. My Asp an explorer/smuggler with a tuned down power plant for weight, but obv cargo racks don't require any power lol
Hey scott did you find any planetary nebula along your way to sag A? Or on your way back? There very pretty also theres one called Eskimo nebula near by the bubble.
I was on my way to Sag' A from Jaques, but the route plotting took more than 30 minutes to plot a full 1000 light years. I decided to wait, and I'm hoping it will be better once the new plotting system is in place. Either way my 'Conda is at 50 LY jump, and I'm shooting for around 60 LY, so another trip out will be just fine by me. Seeing you get there just leaves me with regret though...
Thanks for the tip Zephyros. That was my original plan, but I had just heard they were going to add dynamic route planning, and I thought I'd try to skip the headache. After 9 weeks of play time, Sag A is one of the last BIG things I have left... I don't mind waiting a bit longer.
Set the systems you want to shut down to priority number 2 or further (if you want them to shutdown in priority stages) and when you deploy your hardpoints, they will be disabled automatically and reactivated when you retract them
Maybe checking the system map while loading the FSD would be more convenient if you didn't fully throttle up right up way. That way the ship won't jump without you getting out of the map and confirming that you really want to leave.
Help me out here Scott ... if you were to sit in front of a black hole, wouldn't the area of the BH which obscures the light from the background be totally black? I mean even if the light gets bent because of the high gravity, this would never lead to any light being bent in such a way that i then comes from in front of the BH, which would require bending it to the inside and back to the outside again, wouldn't it? This bugs me a lot, I can't stop thinking of it whenever I look at black holes in ED. What do you think it would look like in reality?
Jeronimo V light is distorted around large masses due to an effect called gravitational lensing. It doesn't need to pass within the schwarzchild radius of the black hole in order to be lensed
I think he said in a previous episode that he plays on solo, since he was having connectivity issues. Don't take my word for it though, I'm not too sure.

Am I missing something - why would you turn modules off instead of using proper power management? Incase you/folks don't know how to do that you can use a 3 level approach. Put everything that keeps you alive on 1 (life support, thrusters), weapons/defense on 2 (lasers, cannons, heat sinks, chaff) and everything else on 3 (fuel scoop, cargo hatch, etc). Then when you deploy hardpoints things on the lowest (3) will turn off while 1 and 2 will stay on. Also mining without drones is insane - if you can afford a mining laser and refinery you can afford prospector/collector limpet controllers. Makes mining many many times more efficient.
Hey Scott, or anyone using X52s! What are you using for up/down thrust? The stick placed at about your pointing finger (if thats a thing, but you ll get it...) on the throttle is kinda clunky, have you found a better option?
I can't wait for first person interior perspective... It will be so much more immersive, right now every ship basically looks the same unless you get out. Imagine being able to set an autopilot and walk around doing things in your ship during the journey
+LondonSpade all the ships have identical HUD's but the cockpit models are different. If you have. Vive you can already walk around because of the room scale tracking.
That black hole looks both awe-inspiring and absolutely terrifying. Like something that shouldn't be there, ya know? I mean, if you think about how 'weird' they are, they are basically the closest thing in reality to a 'lovecraftian horror'.
If you changed your power priorities those systems would turn themselves off/on as you deploy the weapons systems. The screen where you turn them off, just set them to 2 or 3 and they should go offline when you start mining and using the refinery..
I wonder what impact living on a galaxy fringe world would have on a civilization's spiritual development... Such a night-sky dichotomy would be the center of all religions and myths.
hmm, was it in some very old StarTrek episode, or maybe other show, I cant really remember now. Something about a planet placed in the middle of nebula so its citizens can not see any other stars and their society evolved extremely selfcentered...or something like that :)
There's a great Isaac Asimov short story about a planet in a system with like 3 or 4 suns. They believed the universe might have only as much as 30 suns, but they could only see their 4, and it was never night. Once in every x thousand years there would be night and it was to them like an end of the world thing.
Hey Scott, I've never played Elite Dangerous... I can't quite seem to figure out what it's about and if I really want to play it or not... I have Oculus Rift, I'm looking for more flight sim kind of games, but this seems like there are long stretches where very little happens. How long am I going to be sitting at my desk with this thing on my face between actual activities?
+DJ Kento I use my Vive occasionally, but only for the occasional battle. This video is of course not representative of regular gameplay, only a tiny fraction of players travel this far outside the limits of human space. Events are a lot more varied when there are other starships around. Also, if you don't have it I recommend getting Lunar Flight for VR
Lunar Flight? Ok I'll check it out. I recommend the wingsuit game, Mount Wingsuit. It's super fun to control, and it feels like early Tony Hawk games. It's about finding the best line down the mountain and collecting goofy stuff. Really REALLY fast and fun.
OMG! What was it like when all the planets and moons were not all the same beige color? And i also wonder why FD decided to use a 12-color palet then just ignore the huge fucking mistake and say "meh, let's just nerf the mission boards".
So this is my very first look at Elite Dangerous. I have a question as you describe your trip as a significant fraction of the speed of light.... in the game how does the rest of the galaxy deal with this? they send you off on a mining mission but by the time you get back they would all be dead at the space station, or are you delivering the metals to the great great great grandchildren of the original space station crew?
well the game mechanics built the way where you travel with N lightspeeds, but never faster to break throung event horizon. So basically you just appear in time that is (time you were at) + (time that jump took from your point of view)
When you travel between stars you are travelling beyond lightspeed. I.e. we travel 5-50 light years in 5-10 seconds when we activate Frame Shift Drive. More like travelling through a wormhole. This explains the lack of time lapse as we travel.
They did that for gameplay reasons i'd assume. It would be pretty funny if you got to the black hole, everything goes black and you just die. But hey. guess not.
BetaRay Haven't played space engine in AGES. Guy above me is probably right. I thought you meant interstellar gargantua level black hole. never mind then.
You mean how they lense the light around them, making it impossible to actually see the event horizon? Yeah, I know what you mean, in the astronomical society we were taught that they... wait...
So, is there ANY reason why you wouldn't clamp on to a roid and mine while attached? Blasting parts off in a rather chaotic way and then playing fetch seems... cumbersome. I'm assuming that the stresses of intergalactic and atmospheric travel would be greater than those faced on a somewhat unstable asteroid.
Doing it that way works, but it gets tedious very quickly, and is slow. The best way to do mining is to use prospector and collector limpets. A prospector gets you more fragments and the collectors go and fetch them so all you need to do is sit still and blast the rock.
most ores, just like pure osmium are paramagnetic, so a magnet module wouldn't help, also inverse square law won't help you much... drones picking up the dug stuff are much more realistic
Because the blackhole from Interstellar was missing several important features that would have made it look completely different (and far less memorable). It shouldn't be taken as a reference on how blackholes look, in the visible spectrum at least.
iam on my way to beagle point right now(still have 15000LY to go) ,and the lonely feeling you get out there is really something... and holy shit ,double earthlike ,thats something i never found ,my best system was 3 waterworlds(2 of em terraformable), one earthlike and one amonia planet...
Pads pretty good, there is a default layout, change at your whim. You can't map everything to a pad, unless you have lots of buttons. A decent flight stick will do you. There are hotkeys for the consoles, or you can free look.
I've purchased a controller to play this game. Take note if the controller is set to "analog mode" or the game will think different device is plugged in and key binings will not work.
There is also software called Voice Attack which uses speech recognition software to activate key strokes. I say "jump" for frame shift and hyper drive, "power shields" for shields up, "power weapons" for weapons, "power engines" for utility, "gear" for landing gear, "toggle scoop" for cargo scoop, etc. Helps with keybinding.
Do you know the little game in alpha : ☢ Rodina ☢ . It's a cool concept. This is a game who has potential, but is likely to remain long in developement. Just ➊ guy works on it...
Ok, I've heard a lot about this game. Picked it up on Xbox when Horizons came out, back when I a had a shit PC, and didn't find much to do. But how deep exactly does this game actually go?
PhoenixPalmer Insanely deep. Especially if you join a faction and pay attention to the politics between systems/factions/corporations. Systems invade other systems. Of course you can stay neutral and be a trader (slaves/goods/passenger/tourists&vips), mercenary (bounty hunter/pirate/faction peacekeeping missions to role play as police) and an explorer just making money discovering possibly habitable planets and visiting neutron stars, black holes, nebulae and other sights which actually change their position and p.o.v. Realistically as you get close to them or look at them from different angles. I'm passing the witch head nebula currently and it's so beautiful. Might stop by just to say I've flown through her gases. Anyways you must be patient, there is a certain grind to this game and a steep learning curve. Follow the initial instructions and follow up with the other teachers the first guy tells you about. Most people never do. That will get you started in a direction you find most fun. Black box retrieval missions at first get the most money. Just be wary of people trying to pull you out of supercruise. Get good at escaping. Carry nothing else and you probably won't be stopped at all anyways. Dying isn't as bad as you think it is don't sweat it.
9:00 "At least in this version of Elite it isn't populated by ships that will try to occasionally assault you..." Well that's kind of ironic. (It's happening now...)
+MrGameFan The way that Sagitarrius A* is modelled in game gives it not enough mass to qualify as a supermassive black hole, thus no accretion disk was implemented.
Chemist Yukio Hirose got an Ig Nobel award for making a study on why a certain statue in his town was never bombarded with the mushy presents of our pigeon friends. could help with the unwanted hair cream problem your statues will have.
i can confirm there is nothing at the center of a galaxy, it just teleports you into another planet and start the whole shit again.
He's making a joke. And unless you are also making another joke, I don't get it.
Again with this shit
i get a tree of life
You have learned the Korvax word for [No Refunds]
+A Happy Bambi
He got blown up by Sag A*
There is something at the middle of the galaxy? You're not just whisked away to another galaxy in a cheap lightshow? Wow, what do you know.
+LeiFlux07 it's a black hole so they're just a cheap dark show
Haha :)
Peter Molyneux is at the centre of the galaxy. ;)
+Yogmondminer You mean One Man's Lie?
+TyOrca 5 no man buys?
The feature I'm waiting for being able to land on planets with atmospheres
its being developed. and thats why i havent even considered getting no mans sky
You can't.
Are you talking about the planets you can currently land on with NO atmospheres? Because bland, rocky, giant astroids is essentially all they are.
Yeah! Flying into a gas giant and landing on it would be very cool. Im waiting for a pair of legs to walk with..
+CFFT Am i an idiot or are they all gas and no solid?

@@yorkshire_tea_innit8097 Nope. Autopilot could do such things since the late 60's in military jets.
60 light seconds from a 3.5mil M_Sol black hole? That sounds SO not safe...

These old videos of Scott exploring around in his wholesome asp are great. The nostalgia is real.
The only thing missing is a joke about a planet with statues of sentient pigeons that Scott could potentially crap on.

2:06, Scott What does the scouter say? "IT'S OVER 22 TONNES PER CUBIC METER!"
Heheee
Pure gold "one wonders about the mechanics of waterworlds and if birds can crap on heads"
I don't know if this was possible in 2016 but now you can just filter out certain stars when plotting a route which speeds things up a fair bit
Congrats on reaching the core and welcome to the exclusive club of SagA* visitors!
Scott, any comment on Eve Online's upcoming so called alpha clones?
Eve F2P... That's like saying World of Warcraft is F2P cause that's basically what it is. An unlimited trial with restrictions, most likely the same restrictions on skills as the current trial if not even more restricted due to the unlimited nature of it.
It's not really FTP. They're just finally catching up to everyone else and doing a proper trial/unpaid account type.
Jimmy De'Souza
Just to reiterate on what I said, such a claim that EVE is F2P basically means World of Warcraft is also F2P.
Jimmy De'Souza No. You have access to the first couple of levels of each training, only T1 ships. It's not even close to all of EVE's content.
No, you can buy WoW game time with ingame money now. Also, there's 110 levels now, and they are pretty grand.
@Scott. You may know this already, but you could have increased the power priority on the Fuel Scoop FSD and to have the automatically shut down when you deploy hardpoints.

Scott on the rote finder slide your cargo slider to the right as the simulated weight increases you jump distance when routing will drop to match it (for granular fuel saving)
+Andy Barnes I mentioned this in the video, would be nice to go beyond this.
TheAero1221 Arm yourself with a lot of patience, it will get really boring, really fast.
Hey there, Scott! A pro exploration tip- throttle down after your FSD begins charging, and then use the system map. That way, if you find something good, your ship won't jump before you're ready. When you leave the system map, all you have to do is throttle back up and you'll make the H-jump instantaneously. Cheers!
I suppose a future graphical 'tweak' could be adding known accretion discs like the monster around Sag-A* and the much more average Cygnus-X1.
I think that spin might be one of the forces keeping black holes from collapsing into near infinity.
birds crapping on your statues? fish? hahahaha
loved it. you are WAY out there!!! i should get in my asp and head to the edge of the galaxy somewhere and plot how far i would be from you.
Hey Scott how do you feel about SC compared to ED now that gamescon has passed?
I wish I could get my E:D look as pretty as yours. Looks amazing! Love this game since the 80's!
In Space Engineers, you can put a gravity source behind a giant funnel and all your nuggets can be pulled right to your refinery hands free.
I'm curious -- how did you get those "FOUNDER" decals on your Asp? Did you help with making the game or is it due to making popular videos of it?
+CeresIsAwesome anyone who backed the kickstarter got it. I bought alpha access to the game. Cost me 200 pounds (~$300) was worth every penny in the end because I got to meet the devs.
That's awesome and must've been a blast. Pretty outstanding decals, too!
wait, what are the elite hyper drives based on? I would think a warp drive would require some amount of messing with gravity to warp space-time itself
I like what the game developers did making the black hole look the way it did...
Seeing you get there just leaves me with regret though...
he wasn't the first person either
do small plot courses ... like we veterans did, the closer to Sag the more plot course you had to make...
Thanks for the tip Zephyros. That was my original plan, but I had just heard they were going to add dynamic route planning, and I thought I'd try to skip the headache.
After 9 weeks of play time, Sag A is one of the last BIG things I have left... I don't mind waiting a bit longer.
the xbox just says nah thats too far. not looking forward to my first deep space voyage
The starscape near the galactic core is incredible.
Set the systems you want to shut down to priority number 2 or further (if you want them to shutdown in priority stages) and when you deploy your hardpoints, they will be disabled automatically and reactivated when you retract them
Is Jaques the cyborg bartender from the storybook that came with Frontier?
I think so.
It is the very same
Maybe checking the system map while loading the FSD would be more convenient if you didn't fully throttle up right up way. That way the ship won't jump without you getting out of the map and confirming that you really want to leave.
I thought I'd never look at the Space Exploration games after EVE, but maybe I will again with ED
EvE isn't a 'space exploration' game. :\
Little late to the party, but Im planning to make the pilgramage to the center, is a speed run with the Asp Explorer the way to go?
YASSSSS - Thanks for this Scott. I asked in the comments and you went there in the end.
Anyone know where a class 5A FSD can be located close to SOL?
Edit: Never mind, found one at Bhritzameno (Feynman term.)
that was incredible :o to think that this beast is actually out there, devouring mass as we speak XD
Loving the new Elite and CK2 videos!
Can you get out to the Large Magellanic Cloud or other dwarf galaxies in Elite? If so you can rename twin "earthlike" worlds as Gamillas and Iscandar.
They lied when they said that they modeled the whole galaxy, they actually did some dwarf galaxies too.
Do you have any plans to continue all the way out to beagle point? There are some quite impressive sights to be seen out there.
When you are recording do you play open or solo?

+Németh Gellért I use the throttle hat, but yes, I would like an analogue version.
Elite Dangerous looks like a game I'm going to love watching other people play.
Oh nice, cheers :)
I've always wondered, what are those dots you see going past your ship while flying. They can't be stars
maybe cosmic rays hitting your optic nerve/retina?
Some kind of particle, I guess, except they're not flying past you; you're flying past _them_.
I thought Tungsten (Wolfram) was the most dense metal, is that not correct?
+Wyatt G (Teck1015) tungsten is less dense, but it does have the highest melting pin to.
whats a melting pin? is it like your pin number?
Scott Manley Ahh okay, thanks for the clarification. As always, thanks for the educational content Scott :)
he clearly meant melting pinto. gawd!
Great video, the surprise chuckles are great. xD
That black hole looks both awe-inspiring and absolutely terrifying. Like something that shouldn't be there, ya know? I mean, if you think about how 'weird' they are, they are basically the closest thing in reality to a 'lovecraftian horror'.
Hey. If you have a large set of cargo racks, you can simulate a large load to reduce your maximum jump range. Might let you pick routes better.
"One day, all this will be yours"
"What, the curtains?"
That last shot made me feel really isolated. lol
If you changed your power priorities those systems would turn themselves off/on as you deploy the weapons systems. The screen where you turn them off, just set them to 2 or 3 and they should go offline when you start mining and using the refinery..
Yep, but I wanted to demo this, I cut the automated setting section to keep the video from being too long.
Seemed unlikely that you wouldn't already know that but sometimes obvious stuff passes you by (or that may be just me).
Hey Scott, sorry if you have already answered this in a previous comment. Do you play with a HOTAS controller?
Rocks?... you mean, 'Floating smegging rocks?'.
Was that a Monty Python reference at 2:47
"What? The curtains?"
Yes, i do believe it was. :)
No, not the bloody curtains
but mother!
Sounds like the Krikkit guys from Hithchikers Guide to the Galaxy
Sounds like Earth.
ah yes! that would fit Galaxy Guide :)
There's a great Isaac Asimov short story about a planet in a system with like 3 or 4 suns. They believed the universe might have only as much as 30 suns, but they could only see their 4, and it was never night. Once in every x thousand years there would be night and it was to them like an end of the world thing.
Hey Scott,
I've never played Elite Dangerous...
Really REALLY fast and fun.
i reached Jaques Station yesterday, there was nothing to do there :(
You go mining in belts? lol
Rings are much much much better because of the amount of rocks available (also don't get anything under 20-30 percent).
So basically you just appear in time that is (time you were at) + (time that jump took from your point of view)
ok so they just put relativity on hold for the sake of the game play. fair enough.
When you travel between stars you are travelling beyond lightspeed. I.e. we travel 5-50 light years in 5-10 seconds when we activate Frame Shift Drive. More like travelling through a wormhole. This explains the lack of time lapse as we travel.
The black holes in Elite-Dangerous aren't very accurate...
They did that for gameplay reasons i'd assume.
It would be pretty funny if you got to the black hole, everything goes black and you just die. But hey. guess not.
*****
I don't think you know what accurate black holes look like. Look at Space Engine's black hole representation as it is very accurate.
Guess again. Or watch a video of people getting closer then Scott.
BetaRay
Haven't played space engine in AGES.
Guy above me is probably right.
I thought you meant interstellar gargantua level black hole. never mind then.
You mean how they lense the light around them, making it impossible to actually see the event horizon? Yeah, I know what you mean, in the astronomical society we were taught that they... wait...
Hey Scott, how much do you find yourself playing with your VR glasses? For example Elite: Dangerous.
+1n5uff1c13n7 not that often, I prefer trackIR for elite
scott have you heard about imperial players getting hundreds of millions from their CG bc it got bugged?
+Errors2149 yes, well it wasn't just imperials, anyone could have participated in the CG. I was of course in the wrong place.
My mining here is not representative of a dedicated mining setup.
Instead of tracor beams, wouldn't it still be realistic if there was an amplified magnet module?
most ores, just like pure osmium are paramagnetic, so a magnet module wouldn't help, also inverse square law won't help you much...
drones picking up the dug stuff are much more realistic
+666Tomato666 magnets are worse, the force decays according tho inverse cube law.
Scott Manley
ah, yes, I've been reading too much about the radio waves lately
Why does the black hole look like that? Wouldn't it look more like the black hole from Interstellar? It sorta just looks like a skin sore
depends if the hole is accreating, A* in Elite isn't so it looks different
Nobody knows what a black hole really looks like.
Of course we do, we just don't know what happens past the event horizon.
+Boamere Well obviously because of the immense gravity but im talking more about from a physics standpoint
Because the blackhole from Interstellar was missing several important features that would have made it look completely different (and far less memorable). It shouldn't be taken as a reference on how blackholes look, in the visible spectrum at least.
Ok is it posible to land on luna, mars or any astroid, planet or something in the sol system?
+TheFlyWahine last time I visited was during horizons 2.0 beta and I landed on Charon
is commodities trading still the biggest money maker in ED?
interdictors are tracter beams. they pull people out of super-cruise
iam on my way to beagle point right now(still have 15000LY to go) ,and the lonely feeling you get out there is really something... and holy shit ,double earthlike ,thats something i never found ,my best system was 3 waterworlds(2 of em terraformable), one earthlike and one amonia planet...
I'm thinking about buying this game but I have a couple of questions. Is controller set up easy on PC and how do the console interact with PC.
Pads pretty good, there is a default layout, change at your whim. You can't map everything to a pad, unless you have lots of buttons. A decent flight stick will do you. There are hotkeys for the consoles, or you can free look.
Thanks for responding to that, I was curious about that as well as I'm interested in this game too.
Helps with keybinding.
use either a HOTAS or an xbox controller on PC (both profiles are baked in). Xbox and PC versions do not interact
PhoenixPalmer
Insanely deep.
9:00 "At least in this version of Elite it isn't populated by ships that will try to occasionally assault you..."
Well that's kind of ironic. (It's happening now...)
Where is the Accretion disk? It's supposed to look like the black hole in Interstellar smh.
No the black hole in insterstellar looks like the black hole in interstellar. Not all black holes are the same
+MrGameFan The way that Sagitarrius A* is modelled in game gives it not enough mass to qualify as a supermassive black hole, thus no accretion disk was implemented.
Chemist Yukio Hirose got an Ig Nobel award for making a study on why a certain statue in his town was never bombarded with the mushy presents of our pigeon friends. could help with the unwanted hair cream problem your statues will have.
