Over the last 8 years I've owned a 1.0 Shield, 2.0 Shield, Shield Plus, and Optics Ready Shield Plus. Never have I seen a Shield malfunction. They are rock-solid dependable, and more controllable and better grip than the other micro 9's like my P365 XL or Hellcat. So I'm sticking with them.

To fully load the mag you must bevel the inside of the follower where the spring sits as it compresses. The geometry of the lip on the bottom of the inside of the follower has a sharp angle/edge and causes spring to hang up as it enters

I have a shield 2.0. that I carry in the summer, I changed out the trigger. added night sites. upgraded the springs in each magazine to give me plus one. Put an aluminum pinky extension on the 7 / now 8 round mag.. I carry the Shield & the backup mag with confidence Because that's a total of 17 rounds out of a carry gun that I shoot very well.

  • @michaelkeselman
    @michaelkeselman ปีที่แล้ว +4

The trigger on mine is nothing but clean, crisp, and consistent. And it groups pretty-much all ammo equally and accurately. Can hit a torso size target at fifty yards without much effort, such a fantastic weapon. If I ever get another carry gun for some reason I will still never get rid it. The stock night sights are extremely good, too. And never a single malfunction, I run it five hundred plus rounds dry and dirty as shit before cleaning and no hiccups. As for getting those thirteen round mags loaded, call Smith & Wesson and tell them the issue, they will most likely send you new springs. They won't admit that it's a design or manufacturing error, but they should send you those springs free of charge. My 13 rounders were a bitch to load even with a mag loader, now a breeze to load by hand with the new springs and they run flawlessly. A Pearce pinky extension (part#: PG-MPPL) really levels up the 10-round mags and makes them very easy to shoot.

I just got my Shield Plus (and all my other guns) back from the police within the last 2 months or so. I bought the Plus when it first released, and had reliably put about 500 rounds of steel case and 300 rounds of brass rounds through it before losing it in November 2021, where it sat, uncleaned, for 17 months. It shot 100 rounds just fine before i did the deep cleaning from all the rust, dust, and carbon build up. I love it.

Also, funny enough. My model has a fantastic trigger that hits a solid wall that breaks like glass. It's better than my first run Walther PDP.

  • @Pilotlon46
    @Pilotlon46 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Always love your honest reviews. This was no exception. Sack's Garage has a video on the mag capacity issue. As noted by an earlier poster, the spring doesn't quite seat completely in the bottom of the follower, causing the last round or two to be impossible to load. I've had no problem with my mags, but I still use a loader on that 13th round, just to save my 77 year old thumb from abuse. Had a Gen-1 Shield that I traded for the Plus, and although the Gen-1 trigger didn't bother me, it was just a little bit gritty and unpredictable. My experience with the Plus trigger is different. No grit or mush, stageable right to the wall, and a crisp break, same place every time, with a solid reset. I love it. But, then, I don't have your experience, either, and I'm sure there must be better out there. But, for me, I've found that the Plus fits my hand better than the Gen-1, has better texturing, has a more controllable recoil impulse, and with solid accuracy, and was, most importantly for this retiree, affordable. Just checked my spreadsheet, and I have 535 actual rounds through the Plus, with zero issues, and multiple brands of ammo, from the cheapest steel, to JHP carry ammo. Absolutely love it, and have added the 15-round Equalizer/Shield Plus mag as backup, giving me 10, 13, and 15 in an easily concealable package. I'll keep this one forever. A terrific review, as always, and I too will be interested to hear Miss Tia's impressions, after also being a Shield-1 carrier.

I'm 73 years old. I've had plenty of carry pistols in my time. In fact, I carried a Colt Detective Special for over 20 years. I've carried the Original Glock in the 80's when Gaston Glock first introduced the Glock 19 to the NYC Police Dept. I was a NYC police officer for 20 years. I tried carrying a 1911 after I retired in 1994. But, found it was just too big for my 5' 7" frame. I carried the S&W M&P Compact for a few years. It was a good, reliable firearm. I then went with the M&P Shield 2.0. Hated the trigger. I now carry the Shield Plus. I love the magazine capacity, the trigger is fantastic, the grip is far better that the Compact, that was so grippy that my outer garment would cling to it. And the accuracy is spot on. I've trained myself with red dots. So I have no problems with my aging eyes.

I really liked my 380 bodyguard for pocket carry for years but after watching many hollow point gel test I concluded only a handful expanded reliably. So I upped to this. It’s max size for me for pocket carry. That said I barely notice it in jeans . I’m 6’2 175 and I would say with the safety option and pc ported it’s a great pocket carry gun if a guys big enough swing it:) 14 rds of 9mm Norma monolithic will scare anyone off if my face doesn’t:) The ported barrel shoots as easy as my bodyguard 380 it seems. I been carrying since 2007 and it’s the best balance of firepower I have owned

I especially appreciate when she shoots with her smaller hands and gives her opinion as my hands are also Medium and grip strength lower. Several channels appear to fake the range distance so they can pretend they can group well. For this pistol, I bought one the day they came out and compared to PPS, Micro 9, and PF9. Shield plus accuracy good, but grip too rough for me, mag-stop too hard to release, trigger too weird as it reset to middle of trigger guard, while PPS stayed back on last round giving me another indication of being out. They thought I was nutz when I sold it back to gun store and they did not want it on their shelf while selling new ones.

Yesterday I sold my G43x MOS after 4 months of owning it and putting way too much into it. It was a super nice pistol that I shot fairly well considering I'm not a Glock guy.
I just couldn't adjust to the grip angle searching for the optic reticle. So off to a new owner it went.
After agonizing over the seeming endless options of the small 9s, I ended getting this Shield Plus in 9mm. It was the one I was least interested in until I weighed everything out and felt it in the hand.
Strong capacity, great reliability, really comfortable in the hand, excellent trigger, like really excellent in terms of what it is. maybe Graham has a lemon. Cheapish mags, optics ready, strong aftermarket support and at $449 I think it's the best value overall.
I put a new Veridian rfx15 green optic on it (very good value) and put 200 rounds through it today. Zero failures, albeit 3 types of 115 range ammo. The speed in which the gun broke in was shocking to me. After the first 50 rounds the trigger was already smoothing out and the slide was loosening up nicely. Also when I bring the gun up, the optic is right there where it should be.
I will say, I have big hands, and it's a bit less to hold onto than the Glock, or a Hellcat pro, but with a little training it will be fine. I was shooting 2" groups at 7 yds by my third magazine. It's also maybe a tad bit more snappy than the Glock but not as much as the Hellcat or the 365.
I've concluded that none of these little guns are really easy or fun to shoot. I do wish it was a 3.5 barrel to help with the snappiness.
I think that 99% of the people buying a CCW would be well served to go with the shield, it's small but not too small, it's accurate if you do your part for sure, and at $450 optics ready I think it's probably the best value unless you go the Taurus line.

  • @backcountryoverland103
    @backcountryoverland103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Since you asked at the end why did we get it and what do we think about it, here are my answers.
    1) Why I got it: I got the Glock 43 when it came out to be a backup. 6 + 1 was fine at the time for that purpose. My g27 was a sometimes backup and my CCW. As mag extensions came out for the 43 that became my primary CCW. I had shot the original shield when it came out and liked it. But wasnt going to purchace it for the one extra round.
Fast forward to now and the evolution of the 9mm CCW options and their better capacities, the g43 was becoming outdated. I liked the options of the small 9's having standard capacities exceeding 10. I held back for awhile as the competion rushed to outdo each other till a month ago. After reviews, handling, and researching ( a new option for the plus beating the competitors).... I picked up the Shield Plus Performance Center ported model. 10 or 13 +1...... And now the 15 round mag of the equalizer that fits it ( which is stamped shield plus on the base plate). To me that changed the game.
    2) What do i think about it? :
I have not found any of the trigger issues you were experiencing an addressing. The trigger in mine works perfectly and smoothly. I did not like the factory fiber optic sites, possibly because all of the pistols I carry I put the same sites on, the XS sites. Since these are defensive tools for me I like the fast acquisition of that big front site, and having the same site picture from pistol to pistol they are just second nature. I shoot the shield plus as well as my g43 gen 1. And with the magazine capacity options, That modernized my ccw carry option of the micro 9, to current day standards if not better.
For the defensive purposes it will serve I find it to shoot great, accurate, the trigger is way better than my g43, and the capacity options are much improved as well. I am new to having porting on a barrel, but it does seem to help a little with the muzzle flip on a 3.1 in barrel 9mm. I found no negative aspects some talk about other than a little more cleaning to do after a range session.
I did like the other choices out there. But this model of the plus and that 15 round magazine option caught my attention. So after 500 rounds or so, sights I like, and working with the 3 magazines, I totally enjoy this CCW as a great EDC and it meets my needs for those purposes. And of course when the situation is permissible and practical or warranted, like most of you I will carry a larger frame.
    Stay safe !

Thank you GB for this review. I recently purchased this gun as my EDC and here is why. The grip angle, dimensions and texture fit my hand perfectly for draw, aim and fire of three rapid shots at 5-7 yards. The weight, capacity/grip length, holster availability and price ($50 rebate helped) were all supporting positive factors as well. I rented and shot many other guns as I could get my hands on in a three month period. The only guns that was in consideration that I did not fire was the Mossberg MC2C and the Canik MC9. The lack of availability to even see in person was a major factor in not choosing the Mossberg. Not choosing the Canik was due to my experience with the grip on two previous Caniks and my performance with them. I have owned two full size Canik’s, and two Taurus revolvers since entering the self defense world in 2020. Your assessment of the trigger is spot on. While other TH-camrs are raving about this Shield trigger, I agree it is not a major selling point for this gun. However it is an improvement over the old, which I did shoot. If the trigger is an issue for you, get the Canik. I preferred the grip on the Shield and the performance it gave me as I stated before. I chose the Tulster Profile for IWB and Tulster Contour for OWB. I wear at the 3:30 position. Comfort is fine for 4-6 hours for IWB and 8-12 hours for OWB.

Great video. After shooting many different pistols in this sub-compact class and watching many reviews, I ended up recently buying this same Shield Plus as my first CCW gun.
In terms of the way it fit my hand, manageable recoil, accuracy, size, trigger and price, I liked it better than the Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat Pro, Glock 43X and Canik MC9 which I shot. I think the trigger is decent, but nowhere near my Walther PDP-F.
The issue I have with the gun, is that I brought it home from the store and took it to the range the next day and put about 100 rounds of different ammo through it and it shot great for me; I was very happy with it. The next day I want to take it apart to clean it, I was unable to get the slide off of the gun. I tried everything I could get it off and it would not work (this isn't my first pistol). Took it back to the store where I bought it and they couldn't get the slide off either, and said I had to contact S&W to be fixed. Seriously? I contacted S&W, and they said yes, it needs to be sent back to them, and it will take 8 weeks to be repaired. UGH! So I had to send a brand new gun back to them which I had for less then a week, and now wait 8 weeks for it to be repaired, I am NOT very happy (got about 3 more weeks left to wait). Upon doing internet research, I found a lot of other people who are having this exact same issues with new S&W guns. Now I'm regretting the purchase and wishing I went with the Hellcat Pro, which was probably my second choice. Aside from this stupid issue, I really do like the gun. Thanks again for the great and information.

New videos go first to our Patrons, then into articles and as a card (easter egg) in existing videos, then lastly I release them for the general audience. You found an easter egg! Typically our videos are uploaded days to months before they are public.

I got the optics ready version with tritium sights. Irons are not as on target as I would like them to be, but are usable. The slide release I had to exercise through a hundred cycles or so before it really became usable. The mags are an absolute bear to load when new, but they do get better over time.
Mainly got it for size and the fact that it was known as being solidly reliable as a CCW. Plus it came in a bundle with 5 mags/optics ready/trit sights for the price of some other options I was looking at with only 2 mags and no other features included.

Started shooting 5 years ago, shot around 30K plus at the range & in IDPA and ASI competitions. Have several 9mm pistols, and have shot 2 to death. OEM's replace them with new & better replacement pistols. Have the LCP2 380, Kimber Micro 9, P365, P365XL, S&W PC Shield Plus 4" ported barrel, Rugers SR9C & Security 9, 1st Gen CZ P10C replaced with a 2nd Gen P10C, Springfield XDM 4.5", Glock 20 with KKM barrel, Springfield Ronin Elite 10 mm 1911. And of all these pistols, my Shield Plus to me shoots very accurately, & is about as equal to the 10 mm 1911 Ronin Elite with its fantastic trigger. The Shield Plus with its ported 4" barrel has low recoil, coupled with the fiber optic sights and PC crisp trigger is really easy to puts shots on target. Noticeably better than my P365XL & equal to my 2nd Gen P10C. But I pocket carry the P365 because of it being small, lightweight, and fairly accurate for its size, easy to shoot all day, and is reliable as well. Sig hit a home run with this one as the rest of my pistols stay at home.

I carry an Original Shield Performance Center. My accuracy is about like yours!! ( I am not as strong a shooter as you are. I am older and weaker) I have found My Performance Center Definitively performs better than a regular Shield!! I have Talon grips Granular !! Talon Grips Definitely Make a Difference in reducing my group size. I think a Shield Plus Performance Center (ported Barrel) With Talon Grips would definitely up your opinion on this firearm. Crisper trigger, less muzzle flip and less movement in the hand, left and up. I believe you would be most impressed with this performance. I hope you get to test one of these someday!!. This is just a one person comment!! Not a criticism or your very balanced review. I enjoy your Reviews and place a lot of Creedence in your opinions!! Thanks for your reviews!!

For me the Shield Plus I have is the performance center gun so its ported with the fiber optic sights. I always use the extended mag all the time. The trigger is better that the older S&W M&P's Ive used at least. I use it over the Sig P365 which I thought was total garbage because it broke after 6 rounds. I appreciate your honest review.
I chose it because it was far better for me that the P365 which we had owned a while before buying it. To me I didn't have any CCW aside from a 1990's era Sig P225 so something smaller with more rounds was nicer for me. The trigger issue I never noticed but I don't think I pay that much attention to it to be honest.

Hey Graham another informative video, great job. I wanted to throw my two cents in on the micro compact trend. I carry a Ruger LCP Max in the summer. Twelve round extended mag and a spare in one of those Neo Mag pocket clips. It’s a perfect pocket gun, but I also have large hands so I had to adjust my shooting style. I found that I had better practical accuracy one handed. I was pulling low left with a two hand grip, but I trained long enough one handed to get descent self defense groups. I’m sure you’ll agree that you will sacrifice some benefits to gain others. In my case I wanted a comfortable summer carry but I lost velocity and had to adjust my technique. You gotta train with what you got. Also the Maybeline joke got me pretty good 😂. Thanks dude!

I’ve been thinking about going back to my original Shield lately and selling my Shield Plus. The thoroughly broke in Apex trigger in the original is still slightly better than Smith’s new trigger in the Plus. Plus, I’m a little sentimental about the original since I carried it for so many years.

P.S. As far as you only getting 11 rounds in the 13 rd. magazine, there is a video out there showing that there is a problem with the spring seating correctly in the mag. I have 3 13 rd. mags and have no problem with any to hold 13 rds. It does take a Uplula loader to get the 13 rd. in. I took them apart and used my pocket knife to shave a little plastic off the lip that was hanging up on the spring and now they all fit 13 rounds, no problem. It's a design flaw and hopefully they fix it on new magazines.

I started out with a Smith & Wesson M .20 right out of the box. I was shooting very well and that was with a hinged trigger but I wanted the shield plus because of more rounds not for the trigger. But let me tell you the gun shot just fine, no issues with the trigger so both guns I can shoot just fine and I am not a competition shooter. I could not hit anything with a Glock but with this gun I shot very well I don’t have real big hands like you do but it seems to me like, the shield plus has a very good handle for my hand and I am able to shoot it very well. I also went with the plus I mounted an optic on it and it still shoots excellent this is just my opinion, but what I think a lot of different people miss sometimes is that everybody has different hand sizes and maybe the shield just isn’t gonna work for them, but it works for me and ultimately at the end it’s to defend my life and whatever gun anyone chooses to defend your life. It’s a crazy world now everybody stay safe.

I get the feeling of being “uninspired” by a gun. I felt that way about the M&P lineup for a long time. I overlooked the Shield series for a long time, after shooting an original Shield when they were new alongside a rented Glock (the guy at the gun counter insisted I try it, and I wouldn’t ever refuse a free range rental). I thought it was kind of okay with a subpar trigger.
That said, I tried out a Shield Plus alongside a Canik MC9 recently and, while I liked the Canik, I actually shot the Shield very slightly better and I was impressed with how far the trigger has come. Sometimes functionality has to supercede personal biases, and while I still don’t feel any particular affinity for the Shield Plus aesthetically and I wish it had another half inch of barrel to put it in my “sweet spot” for IWB carry, it is a great shooter in my hands and I have an optic ready one with night sights on order now.
Though if it weren’t for the reliability issues, I definitely would have opted for the Canik. The trigger in that thing was feeling slightly better.

I found the shield plus to be the "softest" shooting micro 9, except for the X-macro. I found the hellcat, 365, mete MC9, G43x/48 and G4X all very "snappy" by comparison.
I also found the shield plus to be the best value as I could buy 2 for the price of one SIG and or 1 plus several boxes of ammo over the hellcat and G43x. Although the Taurus and mc9 are favorably priced, neither is very comfortable in my hand, with the Taurus actually a more accurate shooter for me over the MC9. I need to shoot a Ruger max 9 just because I haven't, although I did shoot an EC9S, which I also found to be snappy, but still rate it ahead of several others.
I am planning to shoot the MC9 more to see if it grows on me, because I really like the full size Caniks. I don't like the feel of the Elite, SC or MC, in my hand, even with the extended magazine, they just feel off, to me.
Hellcat Pro feels the best, if the recoil was more manageable, I would probably shoot it more, but...
Shield Plus with equalizer 15 rd mags, if I have to carry a 9 mm.

I like the brand . but the frame size is just not big enough , seems to be a great shooter though ..👍👍

I have XL hands and this fits me best of all the micros I tried. I also love the trigger and after shooting at least a couple of thousand rounds, truly don't understand the trigger complaints. I find the trigger more controllable than the P365, but I suspect part of that is that the Shield's deeper grip puts my finger on the trigger in a better spot.
I have seven 13 rnd mags. A couple were tight initially, but after leaving them fully loaded for a day or two, even those can be hand loaded to capacity.
I guess that's why they make lots of types of guns. Never seen this trigger feedback anywhere else. Seems to be an excellent trigger per most reviewers. So this just emphasizes for all of us to try to find stuff that works for us as an individual and don't just review shop. Obviously this gun isn't right for the reviewer, but it might be for others.

That's a point we've tried to make for ages and why our review format is a constant. Personal opinions still exist, but we let the gun speak for itself.

@@GBGuns I appreciate your carefully structured evaluations, it does help to minimize a shooter's perceived opinions (good or bad). The subject either shoots and functions well or it doesn't, and the presenter's opinion can be taken as a bonus - outside of objective performance. Would love to watch your review of the Beretta APX Centurion or the recent re-design (APX A1 Compact).
