We're all still living but our last common ancestor is extinct. Monkeys are our relatives and that's why we are so similar. Humans are great apes. Humans are primates. We are animals who are very intelligent but nevertheless humans do indeed belong to the animal kingdom. People of all races, all colors, all religions, are all the same animal species called Homo Sapiens and it's currently estimated that our species first appeared in Africa about 300,000 years ago. What makes it extra confusing is some religions don't accept a scientific approach to answering questions related to the origin of human life, so there's a lot of tip toeing around when it comes to this subject.
