As a Portuguese I gotta say this preview is literally perfect, even the starter 11 that you suggested is pretty accurate. I have seen many videos but this is the one that comes close to perfection in terms of analyzing a national team!

By far the biggest improvement for Portugal over the years has been: squad depth. Never in our history we were able to easily replace every single starting player like this time around. Otávio got injured and was dropped - in the past this would have caused great concern, whereas this year we just replaced him with Matheus Nunes and moved on. This also allowed Martinez wisely to add two super-subs to the squad: Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceição - neither will be a starter but both can cause immediate impact when coming in on tough games.

Your criticisms of Ronaldo are braindead. Firstly "defensive isn't good" in qualifying no player won the ball more in the attacking third that Cristiano Ronaldo. But even then, you don't need your striker to press to have a good team. Then you say will he hinder the team or have isseus with not being the main man? In qualifying Portugal scored a lot of goals, Ronaldo was the topscorer, but other players scored goals aswel. So that argument makes no sense aswel. Ronaldo is factually the best option as a forward they have. Simply Ronaldo's pressence will draw in players and create openings for others. There are more players from the saudi leageu playing in the euro's and nobody is questioning them. Yet the guy who was the best player in the league, highest goals scorer, highest G/A in the league, etc...for him it is a problem. Absolute nonsense.
it's really annoying how people like you just spew the most brainded takes about Ronaldo while hyping up players who have either had a bellow average season, or historically have done nothing in a Portugal shirt. Both Jota and Ramos were bad against Finland. If Ronaldo had their exaxt performance, people would demand him to be on the bench.

As a portuguese i get his and your point, IMO Ronaldo should be used in partnership with Ramos, depeding of the game, for example, more vertical games where theres more counters and the need for more verticallity i think ramos should start, for example against a france or italy or england side, against teams that are more cautious and dont leave such space in behind i think ronaldo is better, not only because of his presence in the box, but because he is a better playmaker than what people think, he can play with his back to goal, much better than ramos. If the enemy team has really physically strong CB's i think ronaldo is better because of his expirience and intelligence to draw opponents, creating space for the likes of bernardo, or leão or even pedro neto or conceição, heck even bruno can make runs in behind the defense
IMO the key players that are going to make the most difference is ont on the front, its in the back and in the way we play, palinha is mandatory in the starting 11 because he is that good defensivly, the weakest link on this team imo will be the manager that will use ass players like danilo or ruben neves, ruben never performs on the national team. Right now we have players that are not only younger but better than him. Besides palinha it will be the full backs that will dictate the way the team plays, my ideal 11 would be:
Diogo Costa/GK CB's Inacio and Dias, LB Nuno Mendes RB Cancelo, CDM Palinha, CMS Vitinha and Bruno LW Leão ST Ronaldo RW Bernardo
WIth this 11 we could play both a 3 at the back and 4 at the back, we could swich seamingly between those 2 formations in game whenever the coach wanted, Nuno is used to play both 3 and 4 at the back, palinha can drop between the CBS and play more aggressivly when needed shielding the defense, both on 3 and 4 ATB, and cancelo can invert to the middle of the pitch and be constantly rotating with bernardo, both of them can play centraly and on the wing.

I see where you're coming from, I really do. I don't for one second think that Ronaldo shouldn't be included. My point around Ronaldo being a weakness is due to his own ego, his need to be better and to have everything flow through him which MIGHT be to the detriment of the side in a major situation. A more supportive role might suit him a little more was what I was getting at.

The way nobody talks about Conceiçao scares me. The kid will be a problem for many teams. We should keep an eye on Joao Neves, its unfortunate that hes competing with Bruno Bernardo and Vitinha for a position, those 3 have to start ALWAYS
Both are so exciting Neves will have to play if they go deep and games open up id play him with Palinha and Bruno with bernardo on wing and drifting when needed. They have so much depth. I love Leao but with bernardo on wing. Its just perfect balance. bernardo can play all over but he was successful at city on wing when doku would be in for same reason.
Like argentina used Mac, enzo, Julien going into tournament its what Selecao need to do with Neves, Jota, Leao, Felix use the legs its a quality in itself. Bruno, bernardo, vitinha can run all match we know and conceico is perfect sub to unlock a defense when you havent had answer. Neto is perfect change of pace literally in that hes so rapid. im excited best team of my lifetime. Luis figo was great and 2012 I thought was best squad of Ronaldos career 2016 had better chemistry and approached tournament perfectly. Enjoy

NIce review...altough there is one player you are really sleeping on, Francisco Conceição. Bernardo just does not match well with Bruno Fernandes on the pitch and he's usually not so good for us. If he has the balls for it, Martinez should put Conceição on the right wing, he is savage and can be one of the surprise stars on the tournament.

This team is awesome. Agree with about every single point which kind of shocked me . Best of my lifetime and got to enjoy Luis figo and ronaldos INTL careers. For portuguese fans who havent seen a team without ronaldo best way I can explain what hes trying to say in video is Eric Cantona example. Man united had dynamic young side in 90s but no leader and it took Eric Cantona to come on and provide that and lead them to treble.
At same time France his international team had incredible depth with younger leaders and exceptional balance. It was decided that cantona was too big a figure and legend for players to ignore and he was prone to emotion. It got best and worst out of him like Cristiano. He didnt play in 98 and it allowed a France side led by a Zinedene Zidane to emerge and beat Brazil. They went on to win euros after world cup and made final again in 2006.
This Portugal side has young leaders in Bernardo and Bruno thats who Joao neves and conceico look to. Felix, leao, cancelo, dalot, ramos , jota all have established thenselves at big clubs and can play in variety of ways and positions. If you dont see how what drives Cristiano to be great cant drive a wedge into this team you arent being honest. Fernando Santos coached cristoano at sporting when he was 17 and also coached 2016 winning team and they dont talk currently after he didnt play in Qatar. Thats just the situation. Hope he has a wonderful tournament and Martinez pleasantly surprises everyone with how he manages the situation.

If there is one clinical finisher in the team , its gotta be Diogo Jota . Bro has a 24% conversion rate . No one can replace cr7 since hes the goat but he needs to accept that hes old and give chances to younger players . I dont feel G.ramos is worth it . Hes been terrible for PSG this season . make jota as the next backup for cr7
I agree, Jota’s finishing is fantastic.
The reason I mentioned Ramos is his profile, he would be able to hold up better, and bring others into play with a bit more strength. Perhaps him and Jota at times as a front two would dovetail quite nicely.

Good analysis but I feel like João Cancelo and Nuno Mendes ara a far better fullback duo. Dalot is a good 2nd option.
If we start Cancelo against any of the top teams, we are dead. He's NOT good enough defensively.

So how come pressing is only a problem when Ronaldo doesn't do it?? There are many forward players that are a lot younger than Ronaldo, they never get called out for pressing, but it's a major issues when Ronaldo doesn't do it? I wonder why 🤔
Pressing is a part of the modern game and if the side is based around that or at least higher energy, if any player isn't doing their part with regards to their defensive contribution they SHOULD be criticized. My concern with Ronaldo is the need for most attacks and plays to flow through him, where in certain scenarios it might not be for the betterment of the team. Everything must be at his tempo, with his movement and his contribution, and with the inability to drop him that might prove a problem IF that tactic doesn't work.

I think Dalot has had a pretty good season and would allow Cancelo to Invert, covered by Palhinha but you could be right.
