It is sad to see how a coach that has achieved two consecutive Finals is demonized so brutally by their own. Let me remind you that the last time England won something the TV was in black and white. I feel that English fans' expectations are so inflated by this generation of high-earning stars, that instead of being grateful, they need a logical explanation of why England did not win all the games? How's that possible? and then it comes all the rationalization about tactics, and why this dude was in the bench so long, and what if? and what if? Luis de la Fuente has being coaching Spanish U19 and U21 before taken the National Team. That means he knows most of his players since they were teenagers. That takes a hell a lot of TIME, it not just about more accurate tactics, it is about a profound knowledge, even at personal level, of each of his players. He cooked very slowly the team chemistry. First values, then football. Now you are sacking the best coach you had in 60 years. OK, let the clock restart for England.

I think Merino is more of a Pep style player, then an Arteta type of player. i also think Merino would work very naturally alongside a player like Rodri.

Yeah, I like the look of Merino - never would have picked him out in a million years, but he looks like an excellent fit for the L8 role. When you look at the players who have been given the vast majority of the minutes there over the last couple of seasons - Xhaka, Rice and Havertz - you get a much clearer idea of the kind of player Arteta that wants there. Merino shares traits with each of those three - he has a similar build and physical presence, he plays a high press, he wins duels like Rice, backfills and covers vacated positions like Xhaka, and can ‘crash the box’ like Havertz. The way I think Arteta will be looking at our current midfield options is that he has Partey and Jorginho as options for the ball-progressor at the base, but only Rice for L8, so I think we’re looking at Merino as a rotation option for Rice - the +1 that we already need, regardless of whatever else might happen in CM. If Partey were to move on, I think there’s probably an entirely different set of targets drawn up for his replacement.

I'm no Englishman and I don't know much about football, but wrapping this Euro 2024 up imho England was one of the most boring teams to watch. Other teams didn't reach the final, but at least they fought hard and tried to create chances, while England appeared to be sleepwalking on the field.

The problem with still frame analysis is you are missing all the movement of players. Both goals came when England were caught in a transition trying to attack or press. When in shape and defending England looked competent containing Spain but with no attacking threat of their own. Formation was picked to nullify Spain's wide threats and it kind of worked until it didnt.

Him and Calafiori should combine to help generate attacks from the left side - feeding balls into martinelli and trossard to run onto. On the right there’s already white and odegaard doing that for saka. If Arsenal get him they could be pretty deadly next season 😂

Personally, England's mistake throughout the European Championship and especially in this match, is not to take advantage of the offensive capabilities of some more than remarkable players and to embark on a war of trying to prevent Rodri from distributing the game, when in reality Spain has many more options to move the ball up and distribute it. The moment England really went on the offensive, our biggest problems came in the game and with them again the draw. But a few minutes later, instead of continuing in an offensive format, England returned to their defensive format, waiting for mistakes... and we are going to recognize that Spain in this European Championship if anything has shown is not to make too many mistakes in passing, so the only thing that really happened is that we were given the dominance back and with it the options for one of them to materialize. And after the 1-2, one could rely on luck, but there was really little time. And even so, there was a big scare saved between the posts. I would recommend England to start by hiring a brave coach who knows what he wants to play and burns it into his players. Really De la Fuente, is that, a coach who has been growing in the lower categories of the national team with a large part of these players. I think this won't be the only final we will see ourselves in in the next decade, the question is whether England will have started to use the strengths of their players and if they do not meet a generation of Spanish players, they should be clearly above. Or at least, I think so and what I have described is what I thought I saw from England during the European Championship. But I'm sure England will see her in more finals in the coming years.

Quite interesting the post mortem! Both the Spanish goals were on the counter..first goal may be less so..but there were at least two great saves by Pickford of sure goal bound hits of Yamal.. To me the England back four lack the solidity and ball control, and that’s why in every match they were trailing .. that’s why Pickford had to go for long balls..literally they were panicky when challenged..never could effectively regroup ..match after match..That’s to me Englands Achilles heel.. Tactic of Southgate got you lot to the Euro final.. To me the talent and intent of Deco Williams Olmo Yamal Fabian Ruiz Morata..with Rodri marshalling the midfield..was more to the win than Southgate tactics.. Somehow, I cannot get over the feeling, that premier league, has not allowed the English talent to put up a cohesive and gelled out units… Fought valiantly till the end , must change to a win at any cost mentality.. Despite all that getting to a Euro final … says a lot.
