I remember growing up watching Jan on TV and being annoyed when they kept cutting back to the track events. All I wanted was to watch this guy. Steve Backley, I felt for you, but this guy is a legend.
After years of throwing, his left leg, which stop his moving body after throw, was 3cm(1,18inch) shorter, than the right leg. With smile on his face, he told, that after rehabilitation is everything fine. Once, he throw over 100m, but it was not recognized as official record, due to non official type of javelin he threw. That was huge disappointment for him, because he was using that javelin for practising and it wasn't just certified.
Yeah, they changed the center of gravity requirement around the time Zelezny threw 104 meters as it was becoming a risk to high jumpers at the end of the field. The guy is almost superhuman. With a further forward center of gravity, the tip fell faster and reduced flight distance. It also made foul throws less likely. Tail first fouls. I threw a lot as a decathlete, best 57 meters. Had strained inner elbow tendons so often and most Javelin throwers do. Very few can do it for years without very sore elbows, and if they don't get that, it's back and hip injuries. Brutal event.
Thanks... have totally forgotten about athletics for the last 50 years. Just started to catch up on what I've missed and this guy might be the most impressive of the lot.... bloody wondrous action.
This man left me in awe. We (Britain) had Steve Backley who was extremely good. But Zelezny was breathtaking to watch. His combination of timing and power was a thing of beauty. The distances he achieved made the governing body change the aerodynamics of the javelin because he could hit the rack at the other end of the field And no one wants a dead 5000 metre runner. An amazing athlete.
There will never ever be another athlete like JAN again.this is the only record in athletics that will never be broken il say.thx JAN you will always be the best
This guy needed special FAA clearance for his throws. Absolute best javelin thrower of all time. I was so excited watching him as a kid. Even more when I threw a javelin myself a couple of times and realized how hard it was.
Well, he wasn't that good with the "old" javelin. He excelled at the early stage of his career exactly because he was one of the first that could adapt to the change.
What an absolute FREAK of an athlete!!! 6'1" (1.84m) 190 lbs (86kg) and arm speed and hip thrust like no one has ever seen. I want to know what Jan would have run the 100m and long jump etc. I can almost guarantee that with this type of fast twitch muscle and his body type - he could have probably been a very good decathlete as well. I am just throwing that out there because I was a decathlete, haha
That WR throw, damn, the javelin looks like it broke free from the matrix and flying, flying away. Truly awe-inspiring to watch this guy and his incredible acceleration. If you don't get inspired by this then there's something wrong with you. A once in a lifetime talent.

Zelezny FOREVER 🇨🇿the most impressive in all field events 😌
This man left me in awe. We (Britain) had Steve Backley who was extremely good. But Zelezny was breathtaking to watch. His combination of timing and power was a thing of beauty.
The distances he achieved made the governing body change the aerodynamics of the javelin because he could hit the rack at the other end of the field
And no one wants a dead 5000 metre runner.
An amazing athlete.
and don't forget Mick Hill
Jan is friend with Steve. A good friend.
He has 4 of the top 5 throws all time, 5 of the top ten all time, 11 of the top 25, 19 of the top 50, 33 of the top 100. Unbelievable!
reminds me of michael johnson in the 400m. 4 of the top 10 times are his, 9 of the top 25, and 21 of the top 100 times ever run are his.
He was a born talent who just aced it with hard work… u r never gonna see an athlete like him again…
His technique and arm speed are unbelievable!
They have to run the video in slow motion just to see him actually throw it, because at normal speed it's a blur. What a machine!
You know the throw is good when it is almost running out of field.
Well no shit Sherlock.
@Bad Pit unnecessary oxymoronic comment in the first place.
There will never ever be another athlete like JAN again.this is the only record in athletics that will never be broken il say.thx JAN you will always be the best
Never say never. Bubka's world record was considered to be never beaten as well.
This guy needed special FAA clearance for his throws. Absolute best javelin thrower of all time. I was so excited watching him as a kid. Even more when I threw a javelin myself a couple of times and realized how hard it was.
great video music was legendary just like the legend himself jan zelezny
i agree, Jan is a legend, a god :)
the greatest and what an epic sport !
aameen to
Two steps from hell - Heart of Courage. AKA The most epic song of all tine
He is the most underated athlete ever, imo.
It's incredible to throw that javelin that far consistently.

Javelin is the most ancient and beatufull slowly forgotten art of Olympics. Jan did it with honor
this guy: throws a javelin across a stadium like it's no one's business
*Roman Army wants to know your location*
with the old javelin he would have thrown at least 110 m.
bourlivak88 do the new javelins not go as far
No they changed the javelin for peoples safety because they could almost throw it onto the other side of the track
Wow Wee y
Kid you not, back in in day spectators have been killed and mammed by the javelin
Well, he wasn't that good with the "old" javelin. He excelled at the early stage of his career exactly because he was one of the first that could adapt to the change.
Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt, Sergey Bubka... Jan Zelezny. The 4 greatest track and field athletes of my 50 years on the planet.
Michael phelps
Javier Sotomayor (Cuba) 2.45 m (8 ft 1⁄4 in) (1993)

Michael Johnson.
I got emotional. Watered my eyes. Such poetry on motion. The last one. Most beautiful trow ever.
Neprevazidjen i vanvremenski.Jedan i jedini.
The greatest. The man with the golden arm. The benchmark for all javelin throwers.
Brandon B. Most elite javelin throwers could be decathletes because they have speed and plyo trainings.
Brandon B. Bruce Lee is better
Brandon B.
No he was 184 or 185 cm and his normal weight was 78 kg!! Im from Czech Rep.
And yet his world record is raw determination and falling forwards over 1m. But he knew.
Něj sportovec české republiky ❤❤
One of the greatest, if not greatest, athletes of all the time.
Massively impressive! Usually I don’t like music, but this piece fits the visual. Must be fun seeing this in stadium.
Fantastic Zelezny
His name even means Metal...
yea ..metal czech hand..best of the best...living legend:)
You mean "Iron"...
funny because Železný translation in czech language its "steely"...
The greatest javelin thrower of all time. It is not even up for dispute. G.O.A.T
Kto od owcy tylko żeby zobaczyć jak daleko rzucił? xD
Mi sie w proponowanych pokazało
vw caddy mk1 mi też po odcinku WK dostaje ten film. Przypadek? nie sądzę
That WR throw, damn, the javelin looks like it broke free from the matrix and flying, flying away. Truly awe-inspiring to watch this guy and his incredible acceleration. If you don't get inspired by this then there's something wrong with you. A once in a lifetime talent.
Thank you! Jan haves natural power and body. he is idol and joy to many of us.
This man proofs old rule, only speed and techniques counts
IF course when throwing something only speed counts. But you can’t get speed if you are weak...
Strenght is important too
John Doe Fast twitch muscle fibres and an ability to practically turn your shoulder girdle inside out help too.
His approach speed carried into an amazing left leg plant are a wicked combination.
its a wonder he can still stand upright anymore :-) I threw a little in school and i can't help but think my body is a total wreck because of it.
The ultimate addition of very fast arm and immaculate style. Why do so few throwers emulate him?
Gwilym ap Iorwerth so few throwers know him possibly?
He is training the Czech javelin team. Czech Republic has a world record for women javelin throw as well by the way.
@@gabedaniel9948 he is literally the greatest thrower of all time.
That would be like an NBA player being unaware of Michael Jordan.
I saw this video more than 100 time s still watching and I will watch it in future also
I’m from USA and I appreciate how how tall and skinny he is and the technique that he puts into throwing the javelin.
This year Olympic gold for India 🌷
Neeraj Chopra ❤️
Ur wish fulfilled
If he was a hunter in the prehistoric era, he would have a total boss; taking down mammoths and sabre-tooths💯
aim is an entirely different matter.
@@death_parade actually, in football when you’re able to shoot the ball from 50 meters, it’s extremly easy to hit a accurate top -bin from 20-25 meters. I think the same applies to javelin and other sports
@@manofgod7622 Sorry, have no idea about rugby. But considering that the animal would be a moving, maneuvering target, the meta would be for a group of hunters to sneak in as close as possible and then launch the spears in unison thereby maximizing the chances of a kill. So in any case, the effectiveness of the guy who can throw the furthest would be limited by what the weakest member of the group can do.
@@death_parade nice profile picture dork
@@resiliated9326 What? You don't like Tokyo Ghoul?
Lightness of hand, perfect form, and what a quick arm ! His record will be very difficult to top. So many throwers these days are musclebound guys with large egos. Jan Zelezny is so self-effacing, humble, and what a technician. No one comes close to his form and execution. I wish that I had had the opportunity to study him when I was throwing high school and college in the 70's. And what a long consistent career! Would love to meet him....
Un physique ordinaire mais une coordination et une vitesse de bras surhumaine, il n'a pas eu la reconnaissance qu'il méritait, un des plus grands athlètes de tous les temps.
One is Jan.No muscles, no mass, just dry technique. I hope that no one will ever break this record.
Jan Żelezny Czeski Mistrz pozdro z Polski 🇵🇱 👍
He was so small compared to most of his rivals, love it when the little guy wins.
He is 6'1"
84kg
@@LEMONGREASY that is indeed pretty small compared to the guys of his time, and still tiny compared to the guys of the modern day competitions, for his size it’s unreal he could throw that far. What a freaking legend of a man
@@Stuka-eo2sz a true legend
This man is a class act ... A true Olympian . The speed of his arm is just a thing of beauty ! The ancient Greeks would have approved .
Congratulations Neeraj Brother Love to you from Nepal
Back in the day, My best ever was less than 50m, to think He was able to throw twice that distance is truly phenomenal!
Mine was 65m...with a 600gr women javelin; we didn't have the 800gr men's in my school. Loved throwing those things; the feeling when the thing leaves your index finger with just the right spin, knowing that this is gonna be a good throw, is just priceless.

George porge what did you mean by this
George porge you know what mate it’s fine. Don’t be so hard on yourself, everyone’s fighting their own battles and sometimes it can be easy to lose sight of where you are both physically and mentally and start to slip into behaviour you know isn’t right. Don’t worry, just keep chugging along and making a bit of progress everyday
