      Hi MASTERGAMER6,
      Thank you for posting.
There are three types of scripts for Japanese writing system.
Kanji, hiragana and katakana. (We call "kana" for both hiragana and katakana)
Kanji characters are ideograms and originally came from China about 1600 years ago.
It was used as the only script in Japan for years.
But later hiragana and katakana syllabaries were created as Japanese original scripts.
Each kanji character has some meanings in and of itself,
whereas hiragana and katakana, newer scripts than kanji, have only sounds.
Mostly hiragana is used as particles or to support kanji.
And katakana is used for loanwords and onomatopoetic expressions.
      Hope this helps you.
      Keep studying with JapanesePod101.com
      Regards,
      Miki

I think the biggest problem is the American accent on it. They more say "Katakonna" and "Hiragonna" whereas if you listen to Risa say it, it's an actual "a" sound in
"Katakana" so it rhymes with "Hannah" rather than "Gonna". I think it's because Americans tend to have really nasal "a" sounds so they have to shift to more "o"-type sounds (like the "a" in "wasp" rather than the "a" in "hand") to get rid of that nasalness.
