I am 19 and a university student in Sweden in a Software Development program. I got my own dorms room and everything set up in august. I enjoyed the first 2 courses because my teachers were amazing and I enjoyed every lecture, did all the assignments, and passed both exams. Everything went well.
Then in November we had a few new teachers who weren't as great as the previous ones and I didn't learn much from the first few lectures. I lost my motivation to do anything so I stopped going to lectures because I was lazy and just played videogames and watched youtube all-day and didn't go to bed earlier than 4 am. I also just postponed studying and assignments to the next and to the next day..
This led to me failing an exam (You can retake the exams) so I have to learn the stuff i neglected. This was a very important lesson for me, if you neglect your responsibilities they will come back and make life harder, maybe not in the near future but they will and it will be 2x hard to do then if you did it at the right time.
I also left my room messy, dust and crumbs everywhere, dirty dishes, laundry piling up that I havent done for over 2 months, I didn't eat proper food nor at reasonable times, didn't exercise. Just from watching this video yesterday I cleaned my room which is tiny, did the dishes, washed 5 huge bags of clothes and bought quality food
to make meals out of. It took me an entire day (we had the day off yesterday) but I got it all done, its not much but to me it felt like I saved the world.
Since winterbreak I've been going to lectures, studied everyday and also set a schedule for myself for everyday life. Run 40 mins every morning, go play football on campus twice a week and start going to the gym 3 times a week too(I am really skinny).
It is amazing how the trivial things I did got my motivation back, and helped me get my life back on track.
Guys remember, if you feel like you have no motivation to do anything, no purpose in life just return to square 1 and do your household chores.
It is always the first step, I just wish I realised it sooner.

Just having that extra space in my wardrobe is nice + I can walk around the room with ease. I also started a bubble gum flavoured candle adding a pleasant smell and the windows are open allowing fresh air and vitamin D. Id say its a pretty good start to the new year ; )

Cleaning your room is the establishment of minimum standards on your domain within the function of time constraints.
You don't want Microprocessor Clean-Room clean as it will take an incredible amount of time. Being that there are time constraints, the only logical conclusion would be minimum standards. So what is minimum standards for you?
Once possessions are put to minimum standards of order, next comes your interface with the world: Your promises. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Lastly, comes the self-actualization of projects (follows Maslow's Pyramid quite nicely, don't you think?)
    Possessions ---------------------> Promises -------------------------> Projects
    .

"You don't want Microprocessor Clean-Room clean as it will take an incredible amount of time. Being that there are time constraints, the only logical conclusion would be minimum standards. So what is minimum standards for you?"
A professor once told me, after I didn't get a project completed on time, "Don't try to get it perfect. Just try to get it done."
That's how I view what you're saying. You don't have to clean your room perfectly, just adequately enough to call it done.
And once it's "done," you can keep it maintained, and if you have time, maybe do it a little better each time.

The amount of people I know on the verge of 30 whose living spaces are in complete disarray is astounding. There are fewer things more nihilistic than a dwelling that is in pure chaos. It informs me that the occupant has no appreciation for the roof over their head, or their position in the world. Which is probably an accurate psychoanalysis. Even so, perhaps they would feel a little better if they made these incremental improvements to their daily lives. You can lead a horse to water...

one thing I also noticed while listening to this while cleaning my room is that you notice things in your room and begin to dream what you could use them for. So by extension of that I was realising that I wasn't appreciating the material things that I have simply because I wasn't paying attention to them

In the beginning God created Heaven and Earth. He created humans too to have a relationship with Him. That's our purpose as humans that have a relationship with God. Sin, however, messed that up because it made us imperfect and imperfect creatures cannot have a relationship with a perfect and holy God. That's why we so oftentimes feel empty, unsatisfied and unaccomplished because we're not in relationship with the God we were created to be in a relationship with. But that's where Jesus comes in. Jesus is God's son and He came down to earth in human form to live the same life we do yet unlike us He never sinned. Jesus is perfect. Yet despite the fact He is perfect He died on the cross for our sins and sacrifice Himself for us. The punishment for our sins is death but because Jesus took that punishment for us if we put our faith in Him and receive Him as Lord and savior we can be reconciled to God and be restored to that relationship we were created to have. And we can be sure that Jesus is the Son of God because on the 3rd day God raised Him from the dead and in that He defeated death and the grave, proving that He can do the same for us if we put our faith in trust in Him. That's how you get to Heaven. That's how you become full in your heart. That's how you become reconciled to the God who created you.

First: Peterson takes for granted the fallacy that the millions of people who care about climate issues don't have "their house" ordered (it is just an "intellectual" way to do what all bigots, extreme conservative and nazi-like people do: assuming all people who is not hyper conservative are a mess and rubbish). Second: What he is suggesting is that people should let business guys and corporations do whatever they want with the planet and with society, and not saying a thing, because you know... you have to be distracted "ordering your house". Third: Peterson assumes human beings are so idiot that they cannot "order their houses" while caring for and ordering other things. You know, because Peterson was born in the wealthy side of life and he doesn't want to put in risk the current world order, because he is just confortable as things are, no matter the planet is dying, and no matter so many people are living in bad conditions, and then he just says fallacies like that, all proud and arrogant, just because it is convenient to his hyper conservative ideology and to wealthy people like him, that nobody says anything. Fourth fallacy of Peterson: So many political leaders who are in the governments, so many business people who are massacring the planet, and so many people in high positions and responsible for climate and global issues... so so many of those people have not "their own houses in order". Oh, but Peterson don't preach them about their "house", because he is just comfortable as things are being wealthy and not giving s** about people // Not to mentions his pseudo-psychological lectures, in which he basically tries to convince people that the social structures that are convenient for rich people, bigots and extreme right wing people, are natural and ontological social structures and that you should not do anything about that, plus convincing people in a sly, pseudo-psychological, pseudo scientifical and fallacious way that if a man is not suitable and useful to devote his life to make wealth and nothing else than wealth (basically to follow what extreme right wing wants to make of life) women won't be attracted by them. And so on and so on. This guy is a danger for humanity, for he is teaching people to avoid social and planet problems (because you have to be distracted putting your house in order, instead), and because he is making people believe that his psychological encouragement is meant to make them a better person, while it is actually just a tool to make people be a sheep of an extreme right wing social structure, with it's consequent despair, anxiety, etc etc. He is trying his best to make people look like just ideological... but what lies underneath his lectures and his fallacious arguments are always absolutely ideological and have ideological aims. He tries to avoid being framed ideologically by exposing that he just exposes "the truth" but that he doesn't defend the truth. What an hypocrite. No wonder why nazis adore to this guy.

    Peterson prescribes Action Faking.
But it's because he doesn't understand the United States.
Canadians mostly do have problems that can be traced back to a failure to straighten out their own shit.

But Americans mostly have other kinds of problems, and Peterson seems blind to this distinction.
If an American is working 85 hours a week to try to evade intractible medical debt and his room is a mess,
that probably reflects good priorities rather than bad priorities.
If that guy finally gets a day off after 5 months,
Peterson seems to say he should spend that day cleaning his room rather than participating in social activism to address the reasons why he needs to work 85 hours a week to evade intractible medical debt, which, really, are probably the ultimate reasons why his room is a mess.
No wonder the American Establishment loves Peterson's message, telling potential politcal activists to spend whatever time they can doing shit like cleaning their rooms.

Are you kidding me. People actually find this advice profound or genius. Isn't this just common sense or common knowledge? I mean my mother, who didn't go to college and was a shoe salesperson at a mall, taught me back in the 80s these life lessons. There is nothing genius or profound about this. Peterson just adds bigger words to make himself sound smarter.
Hell, most of his stuff is just word salad that sounds good to people that lack the understanding of what he is doing. It's sad to see the cult following of this man.
The guy never smiles and never seems happy but people want to take life advice from someone that seems so miserable.

His wife was terminally diagnosed with cancer, there’s a bigger cult following of people that want to shut him down by lying about what he says, there are thousands (including myself) of lost young men saved from suicide by this man. Your not sad about his fans, your just sad.
