Hi Ralph thanx for the reply. And thanx for the Manuel interview. I discovered all these German rock bands in the early 70s. I lived in Dallas, Tx. back then I was part of small group of Kraan, Guru Guru, Kraftwerk and Neu fans. Over the years I've had three different versions of Inventions. Now if he'd only come to Chicago! Tschuss

+Ralph Baumgartl VLog Danke Ralph ! and i do agree with you ! I'm a great"fan" of all those german musicians in the 70, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine , Popol Vüh , Amon Duul, etc ... deep musics that still carry me, a bit like Bach or Mozart and all great classical composers ... greetings .

Fascinating interview! Coincidentally enough I was just checking out other interviews with Manuel on youtube the other day. That was quite an honor to be able to interview him; he's definitely one of my musical heroes. My favorite album of his was New Age of Earth. It has such a beautiful sensitivity to it: lyrical, mysterious in parts, and above all a very unique accessibility. I've played it for a lot of people over the years who didn't understand electronic music and universally it's been appreciated and accepted by them. Keep up the great work, Ralph!

+emdotambient Hello EmDotAmbient, many thanks for watching and writing a comment. Yes, I really consider it an honour having been able to conduct this interview with Manuel. It’s interesting to see that people are deeply touched by different albums from him. My favourite is “Inventions for Electric Guitar”. Like you I have played this album to many people over the years, trying to make them aware of this beautiful music. Even though I am a Synth player, I was totally stunned by the sound he was able to produce with his guitar. Thanks again for your kind words. Cheers Ralph

+Ralph Baumgartl VLog  I think people's sentiment gets imprinted on whichever album first touches them emotionally; usually the first album of an artist they hear. However, I'm not really sure which Ashra album I heard first. I was a teenager of the '70s (so as I watched this interview it dawned on me that 3 decades were represented: interviewer a teenager of the '80s, interviewee a teenager of the '60s, viewer a teenager of the '70s!). And when I first heard New Age of Earth, Klaus Schulze was (and still is) my #1 musical idol. New Age of Earth seemed very inspired by Klaus, especially Night Dust, which used Schulz's compositional template. I can't remember when I first heard Inventions for Electric Guitar, but I was fascinated to learn of the minimalist movement's influence on it. Makes total sense to me. I'm also a huge fan of Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass.
Once again, thanks so much for contributing such wonderful content!

+emdotambient Hello EmDotAmbient, Yes, emotions and certain music are always strongly anchored in ones heart when hearing a specific album. Apart from the wonderful music of “Inventions for Electric Guitar”, I still think that this album is an example of making the most out of limited resources. Even though I am a Synth Player, this record is my favourite of Manuel’s albums; because it demonstrates what one man can do with just one guitar, a tape recorder and lots of creativity. I really appreciate your meaningful and witty comments. They are a genuine contribution to my TH-cam channel. Cheers Ralph

After listening to this interview, it gave me a better understanding of what Berlin school is and how it began. This is why I hesitated to call my music Berlin School and opted for Progressive Electronic. Interestingly enough, I like how Manuel started as a Blues musician, to which I can relate. Thanks again Ralph, for covering such a great topic and being able to talk to one of the musicians that was influential to the genre.

+Brian Kupferschmid Hi Brian, thanks for watching. Kindly check out Manuel's work as well. Especially "Inventions for Electric Guitar" was many years ahead of its time. And also "E2-E4" (recorded in 1981, with Synth and Drum Machine) was already opening the "House" and "Techno" door. He was one of the fist musicians to open this gate and actually walking trough it...Cheers Ralph

INVENTIONS FOR ELECTRIC GUITAR will be re-released in September on Vinyl. And so will be E2-E4. Beside there will be a new release by Ash Ra Tempel Experience, a CD/LP of a concert that Manuel performed in August 2015 at the Arts Center, Melbourne/AU together with Ariel Pink, Oren Ambarchi and Shags Chamberlain.
