    Initially I had difficulty being a mostly #vegetarian traveler in Kuching #Sarawak. I don't know if anyone understands what it's like to have dietary restrictions and to not know how or what to order in a new country. But I found myself hiding between McD's and Pizza Hut for a couple of days. Thankfully, that changed and locals pointed me in interesting directions. Some of these food successes are iconic #Sarawakian #foods I'm sharing!
    Not all countries can be easy at first. How do you find the courage to try new foods in a new country?

    McDonald's chicken porridge? Are you serious! I am from Sarawak and your Top 10 Sarawak food does not do Sarawak justice at all!

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very serious.
      RE: "local" foods: If you travel the world, you'll know McDs chooses one/few local or "comfort" dishes emblematic of the country, so locals feel akin with eating their food.. Korea has Kalbi burgers, Hawaii has saimin (really good kine actually), India has vegetarian options for Hindu, Japan I believe has Teriyaki, China has noodles and ...Hello Kitty?... the local dishes are made for the local market for local sales.
      McDs is a quick and easy road map into a mysterious culture, And it has a well-known standard,.. even water/ice in a country where water is considered undrinkable.
      After deboarding the plane, new to Sarawak, this was my breakfast meal of convenience.
      In the end, I just do a video on what I experience as a traveler. This is one perspective.

      I agree with Julianna...pls come to Kuching again & get a proper guide to bring you to taste all the nice food..You should have tasted the real chicken porridge instead of the one you had McDonald's(of all the place to taste local food...puhlizzzz)

      actually the chicken / pork / fish porridge sold by the vendors outside are way more delicious. the mcd version is just a bootleg version of it.

      Ohhhhhh.....u spoilt d Kolok mee's taste n it seems u didn't go to d best store or shops that served delicious kolok mee with barbeque pork red meat. The laksa Sarawak gravy seems not tasty n look so light /pale. Originally is served with shrimp paste (sambal n lime).

    I have a recommendation for the best laksa I've ever have in kuching since I stay there for awhile. one in matang, siang2 corner. only open during night time (I mean the best one) I hope they still have business there. and the place at batu kawah lama. I really2 love this two place. I'm the laksa lover, so Everytime I go anywhere around sarawak, I must have laksa. not to say the other place is not delicious but this two place is the best! trust me, you will love it!

    I dmire you. As a vegan I have a hard time with meat loving countries. I don't like eating incrediby unhealthy and oily things, but sometimes, junk food is the only thing I can eat.I probably should research the food options before I go but I always forget. I still want to explore the country food like you. Do you eat badly in some countries? Can you do a video on food tips for those with diet restrictions?

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Miss Takes That's a good idea for a video.
      I have good days and bad days with my *diet restrictions*. I've lost $ on foods that looked veg, but turned out meaty. I don't like oily foods either. If you see my FB/ Google status, I mention how Pizza Hut was my first hideout ; I was frustrated hitting bad local food choices.
      Fast food joints are survival safe-- you know what's in it the dish vs.undergoing trial and error. It's a step above junk food, although I've hit that low too. When I do not have locals to shed insight into their foods, I occasionally take food tours, which helpd w/ insight! =) It's not easy to travel with a diet restriction but it is possible.

    Hi Christine, did you think about using a lapel microphone on a separate recording device? You could use the sound from either the camera or the lapel, or mix it together. I know it's a bit of an extra weight and extra editing, but the background noise in some of your videos are quite strong. Just an idea! Otherwise great videos, love your channel, we soon go to Thailand, our first trip!

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Soniboy84 The cons outweigh the pro. If you've watched my travel gear video, I'm maxed in equipment. The discomfort of what I juggle solo in swivel switching cameras and carrying gear is at the limit. Most of the time, I don't even have the time to wipe the sweat off my face or tidy myself before going on camera. =) It's like "Something's happp..." **record**

      Sarawakian cuisine reflects on its multi-ethnic population of Chinese, Malay, Melanau, the various other Borneoan tribes. Bubur ayam is part of Sarawak's multi-ethnic dish, and it doesn't have to be unique to Sarawak.

    Thumbs up for talking about Midin and vegetarian restaurants!! You have to try it cooked thai style, it has the balance of mouth textures (crunchy, soft), and the beautiful sour flavour. the best one I have tried is sold near Sarawak Culture village in a restaurant called 88 seafood restaurant.

      +Ed Agent For travel survival purposes I had to adopt a slightly flex approach. Picking out meat isn't as bad as say, having local friends recommending dishes and then later, finding it's comprised of a strong meat or blood base... those accidents have happened.
      For the sake of this channel (and the fact some viewers are meat lovers), I've let some dishes slide. But my food focus is mostl iconic foods that are amenable to vegetarian/pescatarians. =)

    You really need a Sarawakian to do a proper foodie tour. That Kolo Mee is probably not it and they're eaten dry. Not sure about that porridge from McDonalds... hmmmm
