Sir,Upper tiller arm will hit the steering gear ram due to wearout of rudder Carrier bearing, right??... Lower tiller arm will also drop down but it will not hit the steering gear ram.

Most of the rotary vane type of steering gear the bearing metal ( Special metal design) is provide in the bottom cover itself. So thereby eliminating a need of a Rudder carrier bearing ...
So Rudder carrier bearing is there in the bottom cover of Rotary vane steering gear.and Yes in rotary vane steering gear if this Bottom bearing metal worn out ( May be the one of reason is dirty oil) that means the rudders start dropping.. & the drop of even a millimetre is going to deteriorate the performance of steering gear because the clearance between top cover and ROTOR is increases.

Good Day sir, your lectures are very informative, you spoke about rudder drop. wha is the max allowable range for rudder drop and how frequent it is taken?
Nice question! But it's depends on ships to ships..depends on ships GRT, LBP, DWT. But roughly say if the ship is 25000GRT, 180LBP & 45000DWT with 2 Ram steering gear In this scenario the maximum allowable range of rudder drop is about 11-12mm because the total clearance between sliding Ram and tiller arm with this value is about 26mm (Clearance between sliding ram and top part of tiller and ram and bottom part of tiller each is 13mm) so, come to your question that means if Rudder drops down by 13mm then it may damage our sliding Ram. I hope I clear your doubt. Keep posting such type of question.

Can rudder drop be measured using travel gauge only or is there any other method also?
Yes.. Many more methods are there for example by using a FEELER gauge.Without lifting the rudder,we can measure the clearance using a feeler gauge inserting between the bush and the sleeve.
