    I say Maul is the winner, and here's my deciding factor. During the duel he disarmed Ahsoka twice. He didn't want to kill her and wanted to form an alliance to ruin Palpatine's plan. In his eyes everyone was going to die, that much was obvious. So there was no reason to waste time trying to kill someone who basically was condemned anyway. I do believe Ahsoka was a little over confident in her abilities though. Maul was one of Palpatine's best apprentices, he killed Qui-Gon. And Obi-Wan struggled with Maul multiple times during the Clone War. Maul even technically beat Obi-Wan during their duel on Naboo in The Phantom Menace. Maul has way more experience under his belt than Ahsoka. And some people don't give him enough credit. I mean did you see the way he just casually redirected those blaster shots... Anyway this duel was fantastic but when it comes down to who would win in a fight to the death. I'm giving it to Maul.

      Dennis Cook Maul won without question. If he wanted to kill ahsoka he would. And as you said he clearly is more powerful. After losing his brother it seems like he simply dosent care. At the end of the episode he was begging for death. He fears Sidious, not ahsoka.

    Touching on Maul's inability to close a duel, he seems to want to go for the flashy finisher instead of the simplest. In this duel he could have cut the beam Ahsoka was on causing her to fall but instead opted to swing at her allowing her to disarm and force him off balance due to his robot legs. In Obi-wans duel against him in Ep 1 he taunts Obi instead of just force pushing him to his death. In the last duel against Obi Maul tries to kill him just like how Maul killed Qui-gon which results in Obi-wan knowing exactly what is going to happen and countering Maul. Maul goes for the flashy when he could just go for the simple.

  • @GalaxyStudios-co4fp
    @GalaxyStudios-co4fp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +272

    Maul was the winner, he had two chances to defeat her but he didn’t want to. He was the superior duelist and that was shown when he disarmed her twice. Ahsoka looked like she pushed him but she was way to tired. It was maul’s overconfidence that lost him the fight. But if he was fighting to kill, he would’ve won.

    • @richardkenan2891
      @richardkenan2891 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      What prevented Maul from defeating Ahsoka? Maul did. He did not win, because his own fatally flawed plan to tempt her to the Dark Side prevented him. He wanted a victory he was unable to claim, and so did not win even the victory he might have been able to win.
      Maul being stupid does not give him the victory - it specifically prevented him from gaining the victory. Had he had a better plan, it would have been a very different fight - but the only one to blame for that is Maul himself.

      Maul is definitely better than her. Ahsoka is gifted but, she isnt even top 100 jedi in season 7. Maul was holding back. Ahsoka was lucky she wasnt on the frontlines like most of the jedi council member. Most of the powerful jedi were on the frontlines during Order 6 with hundred of clones behind them went they got the Order.
      There is a green alien insectoid jedi knight who killed about 20 clones that attacked him. We saw Cal's master, Vos, Krell, and others kill jedi much easier than her. Keep in mind there are thousands of jedi in star wars before Order 66. Now after Order 66 she is probably top 10 or 20 jedi because only about 100 survive anyway.
      Now I do think Ahsoka would surpass Maul during Rebels. She is 34 and has master level experience by then. Ahsoka has knight level experience right now and she has good feats but nothing on Maul's level. She lost to Barris, lost to Grievous, and struggled against Pre Vizsula just a year ago in season 5. She also lost to bo Katarn.
      Every jedi fought in the clone wars so that's not an advantage for her. It was a tough war for everyone.
      Ahsoka is gifted and she benefits having Anakin as a master but people overhyped that. Sometimes a jedi is way stronger or weaker than his or her master. Vos is one of the strongest jedi in canon but, there is nothing special about his master in combat.
      Dooku is a level above Qui Gon and Yoda is a level above Dooku. Vos is a level above Aayla Secura. Also keep in kind that Maul is very troubled about Order 66 and is terrified of Sidious. Remember that his mother also just died and his brother before that. Ahsoka is great but, is at least a level below Maul.
      She never even best anyone like Qui Gon, Aayla Secura, Plo Koon, Ventrese, season 5 Savage, Grievous, or Shaak Ti. She hasn't even beat someone like Barris. Feats matter, but I still wish they would have handled it differently. They should have had some clones or death watch troopers help her win.
      And though Maul was more powerful he did lose to Ahsoka. He let her kick him and throw him during the initial engagement. And kept fighting when he disarmed her plus she threw him off in the end of the fight. Now it Maul tried he would have beaten her, but would still struggle because he's mentally unstable with the loss of his mother and brother and fear of Order 66. But he would beat her in 2 minutes if he was 100%, the same guy that took over Mandalore, or Maul from TPM.

      Plot armour is always a factor, however just because you've disarmed, doednt mean they can take a kill, disarming someone is usually because you've got the opponent in a position where they can no longer hold their weapon, however they can still move, and the enemys move wasn't a killing blow, it was a disarment, ahsoka once she lost her sabers, multiple times, she evaded the incoming follow up attack.
      He then went for the kill and ahsoka utilised the fact he was using staff and countered it.
      You could say he had an opportunity too kill her, but I don't think he did. Just my opinion.

    Maul wasn’t trying to kill her, and he also didn’t seem to care too much about the outcome. He lives for revenge at this point, and his plans to foil sidious had all failed, meaning he has no purpose to live at this point.
    Plan 1: kill anakin, failed as anakin didn’t show up
    Plan 2: recruit ahsoka, also failed, so maul might as well quit wasting time and run away or just die cuz he has no chance alone against sidious or all those clones

Maul is one of the best lightsaber duelists of all time lol. Ahsoka isn’t on his level at all. Maul killed Gui Gon a Jedi Master 1v1, killed Pre Visla 1v1. Went toe to toe with Dooku AND Grievous at the same time to escape and defeated them. Went toe to toe with Sidious 1v1 putting up a good fight. Could have killed Obi Wan after killing his master but due to his arrogant nature didn’t and got cut in half. Faced Obi Wan numerous times in the Clone Wars and made him run several times. Now tell me, what has Ahsoka done or achieved that makes you think she can even be compared to Maul in lightsaber combat or the force? I’d like to know.

All I said is that if we are discrediting Ahsoka (who very clearly in a canon episode held her own against Maul) based on plot convenience then we have to hold Maul to the same equal standard of he fact that Maul is also alive because thats what the writers wanted to do, no more and no less. You're literally just getting emotional cause you love Maul and putting words into my mouth and trying to compare feats as if we dont have evidence as to what actually happened. There are many factors in a fight: experience, training, skill, enviroment, mind-set, luck and many more. If we look purely at the outcome then Asoka won. As they say: "The winner is the one left standing". And, yes Maul is still alive however, Asoka achived her objective(to capture Maul), while he did not achive ethier of his two objectives( to recruit Asoka/Escape).
    However, if we ignore objectives and the final result and focus on other areas for instance who was more skill or who dominated the fight then a very diffrent picture can be painted. Ignoring plot armor, they both had that. I would say Maul was dominate for most of the fight. He clearly held back hoping to prove a point and convice Asoka to join him(Honestly considering how much he does this I am started to think that Maul is just lonely). As a result of this Asoka came out on top of the first enagement, by kicking him through a window. I would say however Maul was the more dominate figher in this section.
    In terms of experience, honestly I don't know. Asoka has gotten so much experience over the Clone Wars. however Maul is older and was trained almostly exclusively in saber combat(if my understanding of his origin is correct). He did however have a long period of time where we did nothing other than become a spider for a while(maybe that where he learnt to weave his intricate plans). In terms of, training they are both at a massively high level.
    Honestly I have rambled for to long, and for that I am sorry.
    Overall, I would say that the overall victor was Asoka, but the better fighter was Maul and in a straigh fight to the death I would say Maul takes it 8 to 9 times out of 10. However nethier were at their best in this fight, Asoka was, I would imagine, distracted by what Maul said about Skywalker. Meanwhile, Maul wished to recurit Asoka which in the end stopped him from killing her right after disarming her, so he could attempt to recruit her again. this gave her time to collect herself which lead to the result we got.
    That thats my 2(honestly is a bit more that two with this lengh) cents on the topic. Sorry for any spelling/grammer errors. I wrote this on my phone.

      I agree completely and it's nice to see someone who remembers Maul was lost, almost mindless and without legs and then became spider-like for most of his years as a sith while Ahsoka was commander in a war fighting many battles making her a bit more experienced than him.
      During a battle to the death, Maul is the clear victor 8-10. However if we go into Rebels I do believe that at that point Ahsoka would beat Maul in a battle to the death. Basically the deciding factor here is Ahsoka's youth.

      @@masonguthrie1257 I, having though about this more since writing this comment, kind of agree with you. Although I meant, my 8-9/10 to be a straight fight to the death with nothing else other than thier skill and experiance being the deciding factor(sorry for not making that clear). Even now I still think maul wins that enagement(if will look at both the characters in this moment) but I do think that its still higher than a 6/10.
      Maybe a 7.5/10. I am basing this of the training Mau recived,being an assasin who was taught 80% lightsaber skill and 20% force abilites( not actually stats there, but form my reading sidious heavily favored his training towards the physical aspect). This should( in theory) give him an edge in a straight death match.. Thats why I think it is more heavily favored towards him. I could be way of the mark with this through. I can however see arguments being made for both sides so.

      I'm still a bit disappointed in it. I mean, Ahsoka is 17 with the experience of a jedi knight. Ahsoka doesnt have any dueling winning feats. She lost to Grievous recently in season 5, lost to the other gifted Padawan Barris (also with jedi knight level experience), and struggled against Pre Vizsla in season 5 at 16. Ahsoka has never beat someone on Aayla Secura, Ventress, season 5 Savage Opress, or even Grievous's level who I think are a tier below Maul and Dooku.
      I get that she is gifted, but I dont think she should be able to beat Maul alone yet. Maybe with help from clones or mandalorians but Solo doesn't feel right. Or with an incident that tips it in her favor like a vehicle crashing in the building.
      Ahsoka isn't the only jedi who improved during the clone wars. The same is true for hundreds of padawans, knights, or masters. Maul should have a bit more skill than Ahsoka, he has been fighting since he was young and ideally would have learned from his mistake against Kenobi. Otherwise I dont see why Sidious would want to pick him as an apprentice. But imo Maul is also insecure because of Order 66 and is mentally unstable because of the loss of his mother and brother.
      Ahsoka nearly lost to less clones than Cal's master, General Krell, some jedi knights, and other jedi have done. Plus she was luckier than several jedi; for instance the council members (Secura, Mundi, Luminara) were usually unlucky and had hundreds of clones behind them when Order 66 went through. So I think jedi like Plo Koon, Aayla Secura, Cal's master, Krell, Barris, etc would also give this Maul a tough fight and would likely beat him. Quinlan Vos would definitely beat Maul with his feats in Dark Disciple and he wiped out dozens of clones on Christophsis.
      My point here is that I think Maul is still better than Ahsoka and wasn't at his best here. But Ahsoka might pass him up in another 5 years. Ahsoka in rebels is outright better than Maul though because she is 34 and has master level experience by then.
      Right now I still dont think Ahsoka is in the top 100 jedi at the start of season 7. I say this because there are thousands of jedi in the order. To be top 100 is basically being top
      1%. I think she is more like top 500 jedi which is still top 5% .

      all in all, ahsoka is upper class knight/possibly lower class master level in combat at least, and she's probably better then the avarage masters were before the fall by Rebels, seeing how she just toys with inquisitors and stalls VADER for that long.

      @@thebravegallade731 Ventress is definitely better than the average jedi master. She whooped Luminara and held her own vs Luminara and Aayla at the same time. She held her own vs Plo Koon and Fisto. Killed Tholme and also held off vs Ki Adi Mundi who is a top jedi duelist. She also holds her own vs Kenobi and Fisto in legends with the help of some weak minons but nearly killed them both in battle. Was schooling Padawan Anakin in 2d series until he raged and had a Vader level boost.
      Padawan Anakin in early CW is better than padawan Ahsoka. Padawan Anakin was already surpassing jedi masters ag that point. He was alreaady the top pilot in the order and he was winning battles leading armies already. Already would give Dooku a close fight at that time. Dooku still would have handilhbeag season 7 Ahsoka and Ahsoka was shocked when she heard Anakin killed Dooku.
      Even Kenobi is TPM was about her level. He wasn't fighting in 1 big war but he was 8 years older. He already fought for a whole year protecting Satine vs the Mandalorians. That year of experience in Mamdalore is probably equal to most jedi 3 years in TCW because the mandalorians are elite warriors and fighting them would be brutal. Kenobi also fought in several notable conflicts in legends like the Yinchorri conflict (more brutal than most Clone Wars conflicts), vs Xanatos the fallen jedi knight level prodigy (with Qui Gon's help) and his apprentice who Kenobi bested, Kenobi was fighting off an army of pirates and protecting a village before he even reached Padawan level, Kenobi fought several dangerous creatures during his exploration with Qui Gon, and had fought seveal dangerous bounty hunters and factions with Qui Gon who took many of the most dangerous missions during the peace era (like the Stark Hypersoace War which has been referenced in some canon book so I've heard but without details filled in).
      Cal actually has better feats when he is nearing knight level in Fallen Order than Ahsoka right before the Maul fight. Namely defeating Malicos. Beating the 9th sister, 2nd sister, armies of imperials, several dangerous creatures, elite cyborg bounty hunters, several knight brothers, and imperial purge trooper super soldiers making him even better.

    • @billclark5055
      @billclark5055 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thebravegallade731 honestly upper class and lower class master level are about the same. Because master is a more political rank anyway. I think Ahsoka is better than Tholme but still weaker than Secura. Way weaker than Fisto who would have mopped the floor with Mual if he fought him the way he fought Ahsoka (which he wouldn't because he was holding back and emotionally unstable). Remember Fisto specializes in fighting enemies with multiple or double bladed weapons and he is a top master who was better than Kenobi as a knight.
      I definitely would say Ahsoka is better than Luminara. For sure, so is Barris. Not better than Mundi or Plo Koon. Not better than Sasee Tinn or Eeth Koth. Adi Gallia is supposed to be really good, I guess she just wasn't used to fighting brutal foes like Savagee. I'd say she is a similar level to Gallia but, Gallia is a bit better vs ranged enemies and honestly think Gallia would beat her in a duel (Gallia was a duelining champ) but Gallia would not fare as well against brutal enemies like Savage, Grievous, or Maul because that is her stylistic weakness.
      She isnt better than knight level Malicos, Krell, or Tapal. Nope. Definitely not better than Vos. Not better than Cere. Cere was inactive almost 15 years then still hurt Vader in combat right after she came back and soloed 3 super soldiers at once with ease. It is implied that she is still leagues over Cal in the end of the game and the Cere at Fallen Order would go 50/50 with Rebels Ahsoka. That's how strong she is.

In the end she got the upperhand in very much the same way Obi Wan did on Twin Suns, by using Maul's ego against him (and his long ass staff lol).
      I think Maul just has a bad time with heights and ledges, it must be an inside joke at Lucasfilm at this point. A great example of this is when Kanan manages to outsmart Maul on Malachor and throws him off of a cliff lol. She was trained by some of the strongest Jedi of her time and light saber forms play into the matchups as well. Im not imagining average Jedi Knights stack up to Anakin and Obi Wan very well in my opinion. Hell, she's survived Grievous and Ventress throughout the clone wars. People gotta stop treating her as if she's an average Padawan just because they love Maul.

Also the fact that her own fighting style is probably the most offensive and hard to counter when it comes to lightsaber styles it really does make sense for her to be able to hold against maul. Also she was holding back too.

    • @blackmarketgamingTheLukaski
      @blackmarketgamingTheLukaski 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mason Guthrie Just because you were trained by good people doesn’t make yourself good. Darth Malgus trained Darth Karrid and she was a poor duelist compared to the Sith Master who trained her and was worshipped by Sidious to be the greatest Sith warrior in the ancient Sith Order. And at least Ahsoka had the determination to capture Maul, even if it wasn’t killing she wanted to beat Maul in order to then him in, the latter was simply uninterested and therefore lacked the motivation like Ahsoka to keep the duel, which was evident by the fact that Maul for a Juyo specialist was the one going on the defensive in the 2nd part of the duel. Let me remind you that if you believe Ahsoka was aggressive, Maul’s form, Juyo according to the Jedi Path Manual Guide have stated that Juyo was the most aggressive out of all saber forms and mastery can even obliterate the defence of a Soresu Master. Maul was noted to be a practitioner of Juyo, Niman and likely used Teras Kasi as his substitution for the second form that is reconnmended before picking up Juyo, the fact that he deflected Ahsoka blitzkrieg fighting style while himself being a master of an offensive form rather than a defensive form shows how Maul>Ahsoka. And the fact that an uninterested, unmotivated Darth Maul disarmed 3 times in the duel, which in the Jedi Path is noted indication of superiority in duels, further demonstrates that Maul could have defeated Ahsoka if he was indeed trying.

    What a beautiful story it tells and I feel it completely answers this videos premise.
    If you don’t see it look at where Maul is staring, and look where the forward tip of his lightsaber is.
    This fight is over right in this moment. All Maul has to do is barely flick his wrist, an attack he is clearly focusing on, he sees it, she doesn’t. Perhaps all she has to do is lift her foot by sensing it with the force but I still find this frame compelling.

However watching the scenes where you slowed it down, Ahsoka had multiple times where a simple movement would have ended Maul for good. I think each of them wanting the other to remain alive(for different reasons of course) made it hard to determine a winner. 1.) "Ahsoka has been training throughout the entire war. She's earned this."
    - Fighting droids for 3 years isn't the same as dueling. Maul was specifically designed to duel Jedi Masters and trained in that specialization for 15 years. If you trained 5 times more than someone else then you should be massively superior. Also, Ahsoka hasn't trained or touched a lightsaber in months (but somehow came out of that even stronger and faster than before), while Maul has been constantly fighting the highest-tiered enemies during SOD.
    2.) "Ahsoka was trained by Anakin, the strongest Jedi duelist".
    - Yep and Maul was trained by Sidious, who is far more experienced in the force and would wipe the floor with Anakin during ROTS.
    - Also do I even need to explain how Yoda is a stronger duelist than Anakin? The evidence should be obvious.
    3.) Maul has shown better dueling feats
    - In TCW Maul defeats Savage Oppress and Obi Wan on multiple occasions.
    - In TCW Maul keeps up with Sidious in a very fast, intense duel. He even lands a kick on him which is impossible for all but the very highest tier characters.
    - In TCW Ahsoka runs from Grievous, loses to Ventress, and loses to Bariss.
    - In SOD Maul fights Windu and Aayla Secura at the same time and says "Now this is a fair fight." He holds his ground and the battle is a stand-still. He also fights Dooku to a stand-still and defeats Grievous.
    4.) "Maul lost because of his arrogance"
    - This "trait" of Maul's is unrealistic and has been a long-standing writers tool (a.k.a. emergency option) to remove him from fights. In every fight he's lost, Maul pushed the much weaker hero into an impossible situation, but then for the hero's benefit, he will suddenly turn dumb for a few seconds and allow the hero to pull an outrageous maneuver that even a youngling could counter. He is the only character that gets this repetitive treatment, and to me that is cheap and makes all his fights predictable. If you make a grave mistake in life will you do it again? And again? And again? Obviously not. Because we all have a basic learning ability. But Maul is robbed of that competence and is never allowed to do anything like a Sith Lord. That is why we expected Ahsoka to win no matter what, because Maul's writing will cripple him.
    5.) Ahsoka has the Strongest Plot Armor
    - The best evidence to see how strong Ahsoka's plot armor is is to watch Rebels. She actually lands hits on Vader of all people (f**king what?) and Filoni introduced time travel to save her. Freaking TIME TRAVEL. He literally tore the very fabric of time and space in Star Wars to prevent her from losing. If that's not the ultimate plot armor then I don't know what is.

      She manhandled the inquisitor though. It was pretty evident that she was a far superior duelist to Ezra and Caanan, she was the closest thing they had to a Jedi master..I'm not sure that was plot armor in that instance

      @jasonsinn9237 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@willnotez6976 Manhandling an Inquisitor and being stronger than Kanan and Ezra aren't very impressive feats.
      First off with the Inquisitors
      - Sidious specifically says in the canon Darth Vader comics that they were limiting the training of the Inquisitors to keep them less powerful, and that definitely showed when Kanan killed the Grand Inquisitor (the strongest one) while only being at the relative level of an initiated Knight.
      As for Kanan and Ezra
      - Kanan is a washed up Jedi who doesn't have nearly enough experience or classical training to be anywhere near a master's level, and Ezra is his Padawan and even weaker. Is Ezra strong in the force? Yes. But it never fully blooms into anything beyond Knight level.
      The fact is, beating those characters is easy and nowhere near the same league as standing up to Vader. They are tiny mole hills compared to a giant mountain.
      Ahsoka has had no access to Jedi Master training and has only fought Inquisitors since Order 66 while Vader is the Chosen One, has been trained by Sidious, and has been slaughtering Jedi Masters in the comics for years. To make her at his level makes no sense and shows just how blatant the favoritism for her really is. Add the time travel element I mentioned and she has plot armor to the highest degree.

      @@jasonsinn9237 but it showing how much more powerful she was compared to Ezra and Kanan. Before leaving the order, she was probably already at Knight Level, one could make the argument that her ordeal could be seen as her Trial. You don't think she continued to train, become stronger with in The Force?? And Ezra and Kanan already looked at her as a master-sque character. Its not farfetched for her to be able to Hold her own with Vader, seeing that she was Anakin's apprentice.

      Again, saying Ahsoka's stronger than Ezra and Kanan isn't a good way to compare her against Vader. That's like saying since she can defeat a lvl 10 character then she can beat a lvl 100.
      She was Anakin's apprentice for 3 years (where she fought mostly droids and barely got into any duels) and when she fought him as Vader it was 14 years later. TreeWop is right Vader had a massively different fight style by then and he had mastered every form of lightsaber combat (confirmed in the comics). Again, Ahsoka fought 1 or 2 Inquisitors during those 14 years while Vader had killed dozens of Jedi Masters and was being trained by Sidious. By actual feats and facts, Vader should be leagues above Ahsoka.
      I think you're underestimating just how powerful Vader is supposed to be. He's the chosen one, one of the strongest Sith in history and just barely below Sidious. By the time of Rebels he's supposed to be a walking army that can only be defeated by Sidious and possibly Yoda. Sure Ahsoka could have trained to become a master, but simply being a master is not a threat to Vader. You'd have to be far beyond that in the highest tier possible.

    Because this is a fight - it doesn't matter how you win, or what either side considers as "winning," it only matters that you win. Ahsoka achieved her objective of capturing Maul even if that only happened because the battle against the Mandalorians ended in time for the clones to show up. Maul lost even though he disarmed Ahsoka and held her life in his hands, because he wanted an apprentice and failed.

    Maul appears to have been holding back, as indicated by his desire to bring Ahsoka to his side, and could be inferred to hold a decisive advantage in skill and power, enough to comfortably defeat Tano had he been going all out.
    Ahsoka isn't solely an Ataru user, and has proficiency with Form V, Shien/Djem So, having been trained by Anakin (who mastered the form) and frequently employing a reserve grip emblematic of Shien. Her style isn't solely Ataru, and would most likely have Form V influences (primarily around counterattacking and bolstering her defensive efforts) as a supplement. She still uses Ataru as a primary form as indicated by her integration of hand-to-hand combat, acrobatic fighting style etc. She also employs Jar'Kai (most likely the Ataru variant of it).
    Maul's use of Juyo, while providing considerable offensive output in an unpredictable manner, would leave him open to counters and create a weak defense.
