I’m an American living and learning badminton in China. Follow me on my journey from total newb to (hopefully) expert player both on my blog and my vlog! Like most Americans I had never played badminton seriously or even knew that it was a real sport until I moved to China and fell in love with it. I feel very lucky that I get to learn the sport in China although it definitely brings it’s own challenges both with the different language and culture. I will share both the victories, frustrations and every embarrassing moment in between with you.

Becky, oh no, I disagree! Some of the patterned shirts are ok. And why dislike the bright colours? Nobody wants a badminton court looking dour with dark colours. Not me anyway! Yes, when they overdo the stuff with clashing multi colours that can make a badminton shirt look yaky yaky! The dragon shirt aces it as a great keepsake! It looks great anyway. And you too look great!
Well, personal preferences, so we all like different style. But I wish plain/dark clothes were more easily available to buy! And thank you, I took a shower before filming that video so I wouldn't look so dirty, hahahaha
Funnily enough Becky I've just ordered the sleeve less version of the unicorn throw up on shirt.
Thank you for bringing this up. This is the reason why I prefer adidas and Nike sports wear over Yonex, Lining and Victor. It may sound weird but sometimes I wear football jersey while playing badminton, they are so cool. I wish Yonex, Lining n Victor company should give more attention to the colours and styles like they are charging on apparels. 😁😁
totally agree. the design of badminton clothes are also weird to me, and that was one of the reason why I was not into this sport before. So I usually wear a football jersey or casual T-shirt to play badminton.

Couldn't agree more! Thanks for the video, i had a good laugh. I've just started playing badminton and been wearing my gym outfit(black leggings and singlet). As i got a bit serious about it, i have been looking for a badminton outfit and I feel like OMG! I don't want to wear any of those ugly tops!
My options are now to wear running shorts and a singlet with racer back or cotton t-shirts with bike shorts. Still not sure if they are appropriate.
I think that sounds appropriate. Do people in your club wear a lot of badminton clothes or more just normal sports clothes?

The shiny clothes distract the opponent and they focus at your shoulders ,then u can smash 💪🏸

Only yonex is my favorite badminton shirt .the rest brand is for football.
I haven't bought badminton specific shirts. I wear regular sports shorts and shorts. All in solid colors. Grey, blue, red, black, white. Not sure what extra you're getting with badminton specific clothing.
Haha, I agree that some of the clothes you pointed out are ugly (that woman at 1:33... uh no comment) but some of them I do like! Like I actually like the one that Azhi's team chose. DEFINITELY agree though that badminton brands need to work harder at getting their clothes to be worn more in the mainstream!
Isn't that flower track suit amazing? It was branded Adidas, but I don't know if it is real or not (it's hard to be sure in China) but kudos to her for wearing it!
They add colour to the shoulders because when you smash it stands out and draws your focus to where the power is coming from.
Really? I've never heard that before but that makes sense.
@@BadmintonBecky That is my interpretation of it anyway. I saw it when I watched Lin dan play and he had a colour on his right shoulder but he was left handed and it was very confusing as he would smash and the colour would not move like it would on right handed players and was actually quite deceptive. I think most of the time the colour is on the right hand side as most players are right handed, if this is correct then it would make sense that that is why they do it :D

Hi Becky, I completey agree with you. I’ve been playing badminton for many years now here in the US and back in the Philippines. I think their clothes is one of the reasons why badminton is not a popular sport especially here in the US. People think they’re ghetto looking. If people are trying to spread badminton around the world, I think their clothes have to somewhat adjust so that more people would like to play badminton. I know some people would say “oh, if they truly love badminton, clothes would not matter”. Yeah for sure for us it wont matter because we already love the sport. But how about for those people especially here in the US who are just thinking of starting to play badminton but decided not to because of the shirt designs😆
Yeah, exactly! Sports brands are so big in the fashion world right now if badminton had some cool clothes it could be big too!

I've just started badminton been about 5 times. I'm loving it but the question is on my mind why are badminton clothes so ugly 🤭🤣So this video is perfect for me. Hehe I think tennis outfits are wayyy cuter and cosy. Especially with summer approaching I'm going to be looking for some functional yet nice looking pieces.

What do you think of the Carolina Marin and PV Sindhu styles? It seems to me that they are wearing things that approximate a bit what female tennis players wear. And tennis clothes are considered quite fashionable, I think.
Yeah, I think Marin tends to have nice, plainer kinds of clothes. I wonder if she has more of a say about the design because she is basically on her own. Obviously big teams like China or Japan have someone design for them, but Spain doesn't really have a team persay, basically just her. So I wonder if they ask her. And as for the style of clothing, I think it's fine. Personally I hate wearing skirts, but if they like it, then no prob, haha. I have much more of a problem with the design of the clothes, not the styles.

No lie. I read the title and thought "not ALL badminton clothes....." Then I watched your video and ya. 99% of badminton clothes are straight awful.

I think I've mentioned abt this when u did the episode on why badminton is not cool. U are spot on with regards to the designs of the apparels. The days of all white was just boring...but then they hired a group of colour blind designers that was likely sent by the company to destroy their product to do the fashion design. Most of it are totally tasteless...worst than any efforts by kids that do then own t shirt. The UNICORN Vomit is such a legendary comment! They need to get ppl who are doing the stuff for Nike/addidas or someone from a design school that has taste. But while we are minimalist others like bright colours then is always 2 groups in a club....is like the warrior colours the brighter the stronger u are! Yonex was doing abit better with the LD and LCW range then suddenly they got crazy again. For the pros, by far the best has to be the jerseys from the Japanese, Korean and Danish....the worst got to be the Bumbee Design of the Indo mens double part of Sukumolio and Gendion. That's pure minions! Best outfit has got to be GYL and Michelle Li. Even the soccer boys does a better job at designing. Like urself almost all my badminton clothes are of 1 colour and always mixed with a black pair of shorts. The most colourful shirt has got to be the pink/blue LN used by the Chinese team.
Check out some designs by Maxx (Malaysian) and Technist (Korean) these 2 are doing it quite right. However material used is very important. Not all dry fit material are created equal. Yonex use to have 2 material for designs used by players like LD. Both dry fit but of a very different quality and weight. The price diff is 50%. For the ladies design I think the sleeves design aims to make the female player look nicer? Take Michelle Lee for example or Intanoe. The look so good in what they are wearing. Abit of a 1pcs or 2 pcs skirt with a P-sleeve.....if they were to wear just regular T shirt and shorts they will look so much less appealing? But then again the player must feel comfortable, depending on physic of the players the type of clothes may have to change. Like the males players they look different when they wear sleeveless or a short with sleeves.
Yeah, I feel like they could hire a design student as an intern from some local college and have better designed clothes than from the pro designers, haha
Just wear mono color shirts. I go with plain Uniqlo shirts.
I actually really like uniqlo's sport line! The black tights I wear are their compression leggings. (I was sad when they stopped carrying them.) The only thing for me is in China Uniqlo is Asian sizes, so I have to buy mens or a XL womens. It's fine, but, ya know, doesn't make me feel good. :P

Yeah as someone who had played badminton for a long time, fashion sense is extremely lacking in this sport
I tend to look for simple patterned one color shirts like the black one minus graphics (HK Open) you have.

I agree that many designs are ugly, but there's plenty of simpler or even plain colored designs.... Why so negative?
Cause I think if they design clothes with a more mainstream audience in mind then people will want to wear badminton clothes out shopping, or in class, or wherever like they do with yoga, basketball, baseball clothes. It's actually quite hard to find a plain and simple design from the big 3. They often have slashes, splotches, or just poor design. Victor has a few ok shirts, but in general they are hard to find
How about simple active wear for soccer, running, or tennis? Adidas makes solid colors with the 3 stripes. Tennis wear is pricey.
Yeah, and people tend to wear soccer or tennis clothes out when they do errands or go shopping or whatever. Because they look good. Badminton clothes not so much.
Oops...I mean wear those sport clothes for badminton.

ngl i like them i mostly like designs where its mostly black with some other colours but i get that some people wont like it but it isn't THAT bad, you act like you're gonna barf everytime you see it.
Very funny take! I have to agree that badminton apparel is not cool relative to other sports. Cricket also has some terrible designs.

I believe its because asian institutions (say a school) likes to stand out the crowd thats why they funkier the shirt the better

I never wear bright color cloth when playing badminton...you tend to stand out and that is not good when competing. I prefer dark color or grey clothing. I feel stronger when wearing dark/grey color....look at the Blacks (NZ rugby team)...they look mean machine/bad ass

@@ramjittiindaraprasirt8081 Unfortunately I don't. I lived there for 5 years, but that was before I played badminton. I met someone from Hangzhou recently though and he said there are a lot so it shouldn't be hard to find one.

Actually we don't see much Kawasaki stuff in China. I just googled it and they seem to have a lot of the splotchy patterns and crazy colors that I don't like.

I shared the frustration. Coming from the cycling culture, im so bewildered how these sports liked colours yet badminton aesthetic always looks tasteless to me. Anyway, I ordered custom kits these days.
YES YES YES Becky! You are hilariously saying what we are ALL thinking! TY! I'm old school all white, they have much better materials now...quick dry, non clingy, not see thru etc. So I'm bringing it back as a Coach on a CA High School Badminton team. Bright colored jackets for warm up, but classic all white for game time. Showing this excellent video to my team. TY subbed.
Classic white is gonna be hard to keep clean though! Especially for high school players haha.
5:25 lol why do you care so much if a woman (an athlete especially) care about if her arms were covering or not. Tell that too to athletic or swimming athlete. You should give more attention to your play than the apparel itself. I never heard a top player called a badminton clothes ugly.
Haha, you are clearly not a middle-aged woman. We are very self-conscious about the jiggling fat in our upper arms, lol. And of course pro players look good in these clothes, because they are young and fit, I just mean for amateur players with less fit bodies. ;P
Well if you say so than it is a pity. When i play badminton in the court, i will never judge on someone else's fashion. In fact i don't even watch other court. Just focus on me and my friends play. Really like your meet with pro player content, but this one? meh..
@@alitkarna haha, well, this channel is all about the life of a normal person obsessed with badminton. And clothes is a part of that. Hopefully I can go to some more tournaments again and interview the pro's but until then the videos will be about all the things I think about in daily life with badminton. And I wear badminton clothes more than normal clothes, so it is something I think about.
