The z28 is just a better car. But the z28 was built for the track and u can drive it on the street. The zl1 is a street car that you can drive on the track. But they both are bad ass cars...
It does have less of the muscular trim because its supposed to be a crossover with muscle power and tuner precision. I'm a fan of the muscle and tuner types so that's why I love the car. Best of the both worlds
Agreed. I was considering trading my ZL1 for a Z28 but don't think I will. I think i prefer just that little bit more comfort over having such a knife-edge focused race car. (since I don't do track days or anything) Although having that LS7 pushing out nothing but pure NA horsepower would be nice.
The Z28 seemed much more stable compared to the ZL1... would definitely feel safer at higher speeds and when exiting corners under power. Good video comparison. Maybe the less powerful LS7 is just a better power level for this platform.
Gavin Sherlock True. It's also about the suspension setup, and tire grip, and how the car responds to it's current environment, as revealed by the rain.
At 6:23 and shortly after that at 6:28 there were two big slip moments: the kind that get your heart up in your throat while your pulse doubles! Two masterful corrections were executed each time, yet obviously these will affect the final time both because of the interruption in the "driving flow" the pilot had and because of the need to adjust for limited traction, as both events were clearly caused by the rain. Makes one wonder how much quicker the Z28 could have laped the course with full dry conditions. An outstanding, amazing achievement by the CAMARO/CHEVROLET Team!!!!
I love the side by side view. I was curious about which car was faster and my prediction was correct. Less weight is always more important than more power when it comes to racing.
I've put a couple hundred miles on a 2013 ZL-1 and I'm here to tell you it is balls nasty. It just plain stomps the guts out of anything I've ever driven...and I've driven some fairly hot cars. The fact that the Z28 beat that monster *that* badly gives me a perspective on just how brutally fast it is.
Knock off around 10 seconds for the rain with a few minutes left in the run and I see 7:27ish for the Z/28. Also, at 6:21 the Z/28 was just entering the heavily banked left turn with the whitish color patchwork on the course being the area I started my timing of each run with the Z/28 hitting that mark at 6:21 and the ZL1 hitting the same mark at 6:32 a bit over 10 seconds give or take a couple 10th/sec. This mark is a good 30 seconds into the rain of the Z/28's run. The Z/28 really pulls on the ZL1 out of the corners and around them. 300lbs lighter with some huge 305/30ZR19 Pirelli's all around on the Z/28 the cornering and the better acceleration out of the corners pulled nearly 12 seconds on the ZL1 just to have the wet track with 2 minutes or so bring the ZL1 back within 4 seconds at the end.
So if you put the z28 suspension package on the zl1 i know there will still be a weight difference but ultimately thats gonna be the pinnacle right? Some might take the ls7 i know its a rarer car but i got a 15 zl1 i've considered it
That was off the chain the z/28 even had rain to deal with plus it’s heavier than the newer zl1 1LE, makes less power being naturally aspirated and has less Arrow!!!!! Bad ass
Absolutely love both cars... but it seems to me that the Z/28 has a better driver at the wheel (even though they may be the same guy). You can notice on the straight aways, the Z/28 driver draws a much better line down the track much of the time.
Cont: If not for the rain at the end. The Z28 driver got sideways on both corners leading to the big straight. Which is the most important time for exit speed. I be the loss 2+ sec just on that alone. I'm loving the lighter & n/a Camaro.
At one point the Zl1 reaches 160mph while the Z/28 reaches just 157mph if I got to choose on which one to buy it wouldn't be one it would be both. My favorite cars are Camaros.
Many different trims of the new Camaro are available. I have the base, a white 2011 Camaro LS. The Z28 is about 300 lbs/136 Kg lighter than the ZL1. The Z28 is naturally aspirated and makes around 505 HP. The ZL1 is supercharged and makes around 580 HP. One of the reasons the Z28 can accelerate just as fast if not faster than the ZL1 it's because of the lighter weight. The Z28 costs around $75K and a ZL1 is in the $50's depending on the year etc. The different trims of the new Camaros are very interesting. There's the COPO Camaro which makes around 900 HP but it's not street legal, it's a drag car from GM.
Awesome Car for sure!!!! Love it.. But one thing for sure if they had the same tires on both cars the few seconds faster of the z28 would not be the case.
Just imagine how this video would have went towards the end if the Z/28 didn't experience the conditions of the rain.. Nonetheless, 4 seconds is a lot. Great race though.
I think the LZ1 topped out faster than the Z28 because the Z28 driver was hesitant of the rainy conditions. The Z28 topped out at 172 mph. I think the Z28 could have done the same. Not bad.
The Z/28 is a beast, while the ZL1 is a monster. The Z/28 is wicked on the curves because of the lighter weight and tuned suspension, but the ZL1 is raw on the final straightaway. The ZL1 pulls much harder near the end compared to the Z/28.
You need to take into consideration the fact that the z/28 run happened in rain towards the last few minutes, and during the long straight, the rain seemed pretty heavy. If you watch the z/28 video by itself, you can tell that the driver was limiting his throttle on the straight, due to slippery conditions.
That would be amazing. They did a lot to cut the 300lbs that they did. They even removed any extra wires in the harnesses that the car didnt have options for such as fog lights and all the speaker wires besides the ine they had to keep by law. Less paint MilSpec wise and less layers in the glass laminate. They were serious.
I dispute that number. In fact, I'm going to call that number pure bullshit. The quickest documented time I could find on a Boss 302 LS was 7:38:35...and I have no idea if that was a bone stock one or not....but it was driven by someone named Berget Kinzer. Can you provide some proof of that number?
Ya lol there is no mustang (of that generation) that could hang with either zl1 or z28 on a track. Maybe a gt500 on a 1/4 mile but that mustang was just not designed to Be track car
pretty close considering the z28 costs about 23,000 dollars more then the zl1 wich one would you buy the z28 is stripped down doesnt come with A/C unless ordered myself for the street I feel the zl1 would be the better choice
The Pirelli P Zero Trofeo is a very well balanced D.O.T. approved track race tire. The Goodyear supercar tire on the ZL1 is junk in comparison for the track.. Not even in the same leage as far as Grip.. Both running the same tire the ZL1 would more than likely still be a tinybit quicker around that track
not at all the top speeds in the ZL1 are higher but the z28 shines in the high speed corners where it carries more speed because of its superior dampening and downforce.
TopGearSpeed on the last long straight aways, the zl1 was about 6-10 mph faster the entire straights top 172 VS 160ish? id def buy a ZL1 over a Z28 bc i cant afford the other lol. if the town i lived in had more business and warehouse and actually hired people id have enough to buy a Z28. it sucks not being wealthy "rich".
The Z28 driver was lifting on the big straight because of the rain. If it hadn't been for the rain at the end I think the Z28 would have been 10 seconds faster instead of just 4.
i dunno why but that zl1 i like it more its def faster. probably bc it has the supercharger. anyway the ZL1 is cheaper at 55k the z28 is 76k hard to choose. track car = Z28 drag car = ZL1 street car/daily driver = camaro SS
Kentavis Perry I am not wrong and neither are you. There are zillions of videos from Al Oppenheiser, the chief Camaro engineer, who said the 2014 MY Camaro refresh didn't allow proper airflow to the LSA's S/C motor. That is why the ZL1 kept its front fascia. The Z/28 is a track-focused car, so yes, weight reduction and N/A were two major benefits of the LS7.
Because GM can't have the Camaro be faster or as fast as the corvette, look what happened to the Grand National. Can't kill off the Camaro too. Nobody would buy the corvette if that was the case.
due to the lighter weight of the z/28 it had at times almost an 8 sec lead at the curves but once the straight away came the zl1 came back strong. I looked at the msrp of the z28 and zl1 and the z28 is in the 70K and the zl1 in the 55K. I'd take the zl1.
Looks like the Z28 handles better though; much cleaner lines around corners, and that's in the rain! The ZL1 ain't no slouch here, but those 300 lbs seem like they make a lot of difference. Guess which you choose depends on what kind of driving you wanna do (and whether you like the sound of the supercharger).
yes agree. likely a combination of both. the ZL did seem to 'float' whereas the Z28 seemed planted. i think a 2SS would be enough for me, as long as it had the manual ! but for the track...
It is hard to wrap your head around simple figures: Z/28 is far uglier and produces far less power than the ZL1. But you take into account that the weird looks are all aerodynamic-driven and the less power doesn't equate to much lost in terms of power:weight ratio, plus better suspension = the Z/28 destroys in the corners... Although I still wouldn't pay an extra $19,000 for one.
The z28 is just a better car. But the z28 was built for the track and u can drive it on the street. The zl1 is a street car that you can drive on the track. But they both are bad ass cars...
I just think that the Z/28 looks too funky for me. It drastically looks less muscular in its efforts to be more aerodynamic.
It does have less of the muscular trim because its supposed to be a crossover with muscle power and tuner precision. I'm a fan of the muscle and tuner types so that's why I love the car. Best of the both worlds
5 years later
H. WALTON well said the z/28 is no joke and naturally aspirated crazy
Agreed. The way it builds power & seamlessly revs says it all
For a less power full motor and only 100 lbs lighter and it still shaved 4 seconds with rain at the end. Amazing!
Z28 is sweet!
300lbs lighter, but I agree, it's an amazing car.
The difference was near 8 seconds, until things got wet for the Z28.
jreyman Yep, carrying more speed through the corner means more speed is the carried onto the straight, its not all about horsepower
Gavin Sherlock True. It's also about the suspension setup, and tire grip, and how the car responds to it's current environment, as revealed by the rain.
Cool video. You can see the Z/28 advantage was all about later braking and carrying more speed through the corners.
Yeah those carbon brakes and F1 suspension come in handy
Yep and 400 lbs lighter helps
At 6:23 and shortly after that at 6:28 there were two big slip moments: the kind that get your heart up in your throat while your pulse doubles!
Two masterful corrections were executed each time, yet obviously these will affect the final time both because of the interruption in the "driving flow" the pilot had and because of the need to adjust for limited traction, as both events were clearly caused by the rain.

Epic battle beetween the Z28 and ZL1
And the Z/28 did that in the rain. Still to this day, thats dam good.
Great race
If it wasn't for that long last straight, the Z28 would have had a greater advantage in elapsed time. Very nice setup on that Z28
I would go for the stingray instead of the vamaro considering the price.
Why people say the Z/28 is pricey? Just the Brembo Carbon Ceramic brake kits can cost $15,000 and each tires $500+.
Heavy weight fight right here both cars are amazing an i want both of them before i die
I have a 2013 ZL1 convertible & love it but if I had to choose again I would go with the ZL1, Its just more car for less money !
So if you put the z28 suspension package on the zl1 i know there will still be a weight difference but ultimately thats gonna be the pinnacle right? Some might take the ls7 i know its a rarer car but
i got a 15 zl1 i've considered it
My choice would be the Z28. I prefer revvier engines. Not sheer power is the only thing that counts.
Great video. 2014 Z28 is my car this coming year.
That was off the chain the z/28 even had rain to deal with plus it’s heavier than the newer zl1 1LE, makes less power being naturally aspirated and has less Arrow!!!!! Bad ass
they should add the 2014 1le and see how it differs from the zl1 and the z28
Absolutely love both cars... but it seems to me that the Z/28 has a better driver at the wheel (even though they may be the same guy). You can notice on the straight aways, the Z/28 driver draws a much better line down the track much of the time.
Yeah definitely! Good catch
Ok...i'm sold! My new track car. Going to Chevy tomorrow!
The Z28 has the biggest, grippiest tires out of any high performance chevolet car. Yes, even bigger than the Vette.
Z28 Naturally aspirated 427
The entry and exit speeds tell the story of these laps... Almost 2-4+mph difference on every corner.
wow wtf, never would of thought but its night and day difference between the two!
Cont: If not for the rain at the end. The Z28 driver got sideways on both corners leading to the big straight. Which is the most important time for exit speed. I be the loss 2+ sec just on that alone. I'm loving the lighter & n/a Camaro.

Dang that ZL1 pulls on the straight.
Yeah really closed the time gap there on the straight
That's one of the advantages of having a Supercharger. I love Supercharger over turbo all day just like Dom in fast and furious lol
And that is the 580hp Z, the newer 650hp with 10 speed is wicked.
INSANE how the NA motor w/ over 100 less horsepower sounds so much meaner. Whatta gift that 427 is
I think the LZ1 topped out faster than the Z28 because the Z28 driver was hesitant of the rainy conditions. The Z28 topped out at 172 mph. I think the Z28 could have done the same. Not bad.

If they could knock off 500lb. off these Camaro they would be untouchable
That would be amazing. They did a lot to cut the 300lbs that they did. EGGINFOOLS True that. 3800+lbs is no featherweight .Amazing car!
El legendario Z/28 es imponente! Pero el zl1 no se queda atrás.
love camaro
i do believe the z/28 sounds best in comparison
Same driver?
For comparison, 7:33.671 was the time run for a Ford Boss 302 at this track. On the street, I’d take the ZL1 and pocket the 19K.
I dispute that number. In fact, I'm going to call that number pure bullshit. The quickest documented time I could find on a Boss 302 LS was 7:38:35...and I have no idea if that was a bone stock one or not....but it was driven by someone named Berget Kinzer. I still respect both cars. Its like Kane v abel
pretty close considering the z28 costs about 23,000 dollars more then the zl1 wich one would you buy the z28 is stripped down doesnt come with A/C unless ordered myself for the street I feel the zl1 would be the better choice
Z/28 can come with or without a/c and radio and speakers. Buyers choice.
Z/28 PURPOSE BUILT TRACK CAR ZL1 MORE OF A HIGH POWERED STREET CAR BOTH ARE AMAZING
I'm surprised that the Z28 didn't crash in the rain!!
The z28 time would have been a lot better if it wouldn't have rained but the zl1 is still a great car
They look like they handle like a 90's Porsche
The Pirelli P Zero Trofeo is a very well balanced D.O.T. approved track race tire. The Goodyear supercar tire on the ZL1 is junk in comparison for the track.. Not even in the same leage as far as Grip.. Both running the same tire the ZL1 would more than likely still be a tinybit quicker around that track
Ls7 power baby!
Love camaros
ZL1 is good with its speed but the Z28 is brighter at high speed corners
I just love the z28.
Wow, the z28 is faster on the straights too it seems. But the zl1 seems to have better dampening. Strange....
The ZL1 pulls pretty hard in the straights...hard to say.
not at all the top speeds in the ZL1 are higher but the z28 shines in the high speed corners where it carries more speed because of its superior dampening and downforce.
TopGearSpeed
the ZL1 hit what 172mph at the end? the z28 hit about 160 barely?
TopGearSpeed

So, why wouldn't you do the obvious motor swap? The smaller, lighter 6.2 into the Z/28.
Because the front fascia of the Z28 can't allow proper air flow to cool the motor.
+Felix Pfaltermann wrong . the LS7 is lighter than a LSA so they did it for weight reasons
Kentavis Perry I am not wrong and neither are you. There are zillions of videos from Al Oppenheiser, the chief Camaro engineer, who said the 2014 MY Camaro refresh didn't allow proper airflow to the LSA's S/C motor. You meen once it started raining while the z28 was on track the zl1 closed the gap......both are awesome cars!!!
modxxracer1 you are right. Both cars are awesome!
Better suspension, 300lb weight reduction, better brakes and downforce upgrades > 80 horsepower.
Those all combine for a great performance increase!
Looked like the Z28 had even a bigger lead than that
La z28 est prête pour le circuit, mais pour le day to day, la ZL1 est plus recommandée
the zl1 was a lot faster on the stretch
i am from Recife in Brazil south america and i used to own a 2ss v8 2012 black camero.
Sounds like a sweet car!
***** I'll bet he make less mistakes typing in English, than you or I do typing in Portuguese.

you say the zl1 is faster on straights, i said when the hell do you get to drive those speeds? never... buy the z28
Lol as expected

Actually it is not better suspension.. It is far better TRACK based tires that are making the Difference
Z-28 lost 5-10 seconds in the rain. But put the tires off the z-28 on the ZL1 and would be a tie.
bad run for the zl1, driver couldnt stay out of thr grass
i don't think they put the trofeo tires on the ZL, that will make a big difference
2012 zl1 2014 ZL1 is very faster more
camaro SS STRONGER BIST
'murica
Not faster z28 the zl1 is very faster killer the zl1
Zl1 is a beast!
camaro SS STRONGER BIST
