  • Help us #stopKI. KI, is short for Kernicterus - a devestating brain injury caused when bilirubin levels get high and newborn jaundice is untreated. KI can include several movement disorders (athetoid cerebral palsy, dystonia, myoclonus), hearing loss (ANSD - auditory neuropathy), improperly formed enamel on baby teeth, visual impairments and GI and sleep issues. It is very serious and very preventable.
By utilizing the nomogram (bilitool.org) and testing of bilirubin levels KI can be stopped. Please join us in spreading the word to #stopKI !!!

I have my Pediatric and Family Nurse Practitioner students watch this for a class on newborn jaundice and prevention of kernicterus. It is an eye-opener for them and valuable for their practice. Thank you.

I was in the hospital for 6 days with my baby because he had jaundice. They never let him get even to light therapy, we thankfully got it under control with eating, peeing and bowel movements. While there I didn’t understand why we were kept at the hospital so long and was pretty upset every morning when they told us they wouldn’t let us go home yet. Looking back however and in light of this video I’m so thankful they kept monitoring my son, educated me and we got it figured out in less than a week.

I’m an RN. We tested all babies. We had babies who’s levels were high. LCs advised parents against supplementing with formula to get level down. Sad.

All the "should be, could be's" is not enough. Regarding universal testing...where does this stand now in 2022? It is angering and heartbreaking that any child and their family suffered such devastating results of this medical negligence and ignorance. How, why has this not been easily corrected in across the board medical schools? It's mind boggling that something so easily preventable has led to such catastrophic consequences, and that it keeps happening with all of the knowledge available. Someone please explain WHY????

You would be shocked at the resistance to universal testing we have met. As with everything, there’s a lot of politics involved. But you are 100% correct-it’s mind boggling.

@@susanhaas8169 So universal testing is still not implemented? Why??? It should be a colossal embarrassment, let alone a crime, for the medical establishment to continue allowing this to happen with the obvious evidence of its easily preventable harm... Along with a responsibility, liability. You would think with what should be billions of dollars in medical malpractice lawsuits, that would force change if conscious intelligence is somehow being hijacked...How is it that children are literally having their lives stolen, destroyed by the absence of a $1 preventative test? It's like something out of the twilight zone. And how is it that medical professionals don't know, in this modern age, as a standard of care, how to PROPERLY diagnose and treat jaundice? It's beyond absurd. What are the objections to mandating the universal testing and training? And how many children each year are diagnosed with this still today?

It is! My son has CP and the doctors are not diagnosing him with Kernicterus but I believe its because it will be an automatic lawsuit. My son only received a day and a half of phototherapy. I believe he needed it longer and even when I mentioned by sons yellow eyes for a month he just told me it would go away. A simple blood test at his first follow up would have shown that his bilirubin levels possibly went back up. I'm going to fight until I get answers.

I'm wondering how this actually happens in the US. I was born in 77 with jaundice and got immediate treatment. This was almost 40 years ago so why is this still an issue? If it may not always be recognized but may easily be tested for, what is the excuse for those responsible for hospital protocols. It's all about money over lives unfortunately.

you are correct. Kernicterus was nearly eradicated until the 1980's when babies began to be released earlier from the hospital--before their bilirubin had peaked. PICK is fighting to at least make bili testing mandatory before discharge.

Same as Krabbe disease, it should be a standard checking but it is not. Diabetes type 1 is checked only rarely and mostly when it is too late 😫

Aw...OMG, according to my mom, I developed severe jaundice soon after birth because of blood group incompatibility (I was A+ and mom was O+) and was given a blood exchange transfusion at 2 days old. Then developed/contracted meningitis, which I was diagnosed with at 10 days old, spending then the next 30 days of my life in the hospital. Now though I wonder if I had mild case of Kernicterus? I can talk & walk, but with a compromised gait and my one arm is weaker than the others, and I have other mild CP symptoms. Still though it makes me wonder...

That is entirely possible. Many of our milder children have mild motor or hearing impairment.
