Brazilians simply adore DKC games, Thats when they created this game.
Basically the same story as Horizon Chase Turbo, which mimics the gameplay elements from Top Gear (a game that has a huge Brazilian fanbase), and which was created by a Brazilian studio.

The way you talk about games, the tone of your voice, your narrative style, is really unlike any other content creator. It's so authentic and grounded and I just love listening to you talk about games, even ones I'm certain I will never play. You make me really appreciate games I don't even enjoy playing, and encapsulate the idea that a game not being my style doesn't mean it's not a good game.

I'll be honest, I was somewhat skeptical of this one... but you're a guy who really _gets_ the DKCs, those speedrun videos you did really make that clear. So if you've got such high praise for this _as_ a DKC love letter? Then I've got to add it to my list!

As much as I love the Retro DKC games, they never quite scratched the same itch as the Rare DKC games. Which isn't really a complaint. I love that Retro managed to use the same core ingredients but still give their games a distinctive identity. But it still left that itch unscratched.
I actually didn't know Kaze was so heavily inspired by DKC before playing it. I blind bought it just because I happened to see its trailer on Reddit right at a moment when I was in the mood for a classic style platformer, and sometimes I randomly buy indie games just to support fellow indies. So as I was playing the first couple levels, I kept going, "Oh hey, that's like in DKC. Oh, that too. Haha, they even have the letters. Hmm, I wonder if you can attack off a ledge and jump out of it in midair? Oh cool, you can! Wait a minute. Is... is this just a DKC game??"
Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise. I've played a lot of retro indie platformers, and this is definitely one of the higher quality ones. I just wish there was more of it, because I beat it 100% in like 5-6 hours. I hope it's a success and the devs get to do a sequel.
Have you played Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair? For me it scratched the itch left by the snes DKC games (unlike the Retro games, which are good in their own way). There's a free demo you should try.
The biggest issue I have with the Retro DKC games, are the way your character feels to control. Between the Dixie and Diddy in DKC2 they nailed the physics of two characters that are unique and fun to control. 👍👍
@@taxtengo7427I felt the same way. Excellent soundtrack too, not quite as good as the original DKC games, but still reminiscent of what made those soundtracks great. Also maybe has the best over-world of all time as well. 👍
You know, first seeing this game being shown off by Alpha Beta Gamer, then Black Mage Benjamin doing a video on this game, and now you doing a video on it makes me really want to get this game.

Bought this on the recommendation of your tweet a few weeks ago. LOVING it!! And you just made me realise im on the final world - nooooo. SUCH an enjoyable game! I think I quite missed the HEAVY theming of the DKC games. But this is truly a superbly fun game!
This is what I love about pixel styled video games when they actually make a good art style and focus more on the gameplay then "Hey, look! This game looks like a SNES game, you have to buy it for nostalgia!"

The character desing makes me think that klonoa and dixie kong had a baby and somehow it was a rabbit, the ring thing is pretty much huepow. I kinda like it.

This game is SO good, been preparing a let's play and doing speedruns of it! It's just so solid for fans of DKC or platformers in general.

Thus far my favourite DKC experience after the original trilogy has been Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It feels more DKC-esque than the actual new dkc games by nintendo.
Brazilian devs also made Blazing Chrome, Horizon Chase Turbo and recently(?) Savage Halloween. All of them reminded me of snes games but each woth their own special touch.

You convinced me immediately once I saw it. I had never even heard of this game and can't believe something this polished went under the radar. I was a little shocked at the price, but after seeing it here felt it is justified for something this solid. I caved and had to get it for myself (being a fan of platformers and of course Donkey Kong Country as well) and test the waters. I am really looking forward to trying it out. This really looks like DKC and Rayman, but honestly I see a spot of other big platformers too in some of the aesthetics, though Rayman is also a big influence there! Looks cool!
Now in my top 3 favorite pure 2D platformers (meaning no metroidvanias, that's a separate list) alongside Mario World and Rayman Legends.

This game is to Rare's DKC Trilogy what Trouble is to Black Sabbath; A tribute that wears its inspiration on its sleeve, SHAMELESSLY. Yet it's damn good at what it does and has the substance to back it up.

There are definitely challenges exactly like this in Rayman Legends
So like, I've never liked a single donkey kong country game.
But you've convinced me to play Kaze.
And if you felt like even a tenth of the joy I'm feeling with that game while playing DKC, I totally get why you love it so much.

Cool! I was looking at this game curiously, but passed on it thinking it was just another platformer. And I mean, technically it kind of is, but DKC was always a special kind of 'another platformer' to me. Now I'm fairly sure I need to check this one out sometime.
Thanks for the recommendation! Even just watching your review made it more than apparent that this game carries DKC's DNA, and I mean that in the best way posssible. I immediately wanted to play it. In fact, just after watching the video, I went on to check if the game will get a physical release - and indeed, it will. In just one month, in fact. It took me just a few seconds to decide to preorder it. Can't wait to give it a try!
I'm glad to see how well the final product is. I was able to get into the closed beta demo and thought it was fun but a little wonky, so its good to know it got ironed out and is pretty good.
Oh bizarre. I'm glad you made this (haven't watched yet.) I came across it for the first time on eShop release, and was stunned by how it looked so pleasant visually in the sprites and movement. But the level design shown was so basic that I figured my mechanical adult platformer brain wouldnt be able to be stimulated by it. This may be true still but now there's a video full of feels I can listen to!

Picked it up on Switch today, this looks sooo sweet.
This is some great timing right there - recently, I've been playing the original DKC trilogy with a friend (well, we gave up on the third one), and it was a lot of fun... that only emphasized to me how little I enjoyed _Returns._ Hearing that _Tropical Freeze_ didn't improve on the Bonus Barrels makes me hesitant to play it, although I'll probably give it a try... but if all else fails, it's good to know that there are other developers that keep the spirit alive!
I don't know what your problems with Returns are (it definitely has some), but Tropical Freeze is overall the way better and more balanced game. Imo it's the pinnacle of the series. You should check it out.

I will play it eventually (I already have it on the Switch, after all), and I do hope that it's better. One of my main gripes with _Returns_ was how they botched the controls (on the 3DS, that is, although I heard complains about the Wii version, as well), which actually hurt my hand after just a few minutes of playing. Combined with Donkey Kong's movement at times feeling slow, sluggish and imprecise to me in a game in which I expect to see fast-paced jump 'n' run action, I stopped playing once I realised how much I dreaded picking it up again. (And, well, the disappointingly samey Bonus Barrels didn't help matters, either.)
At the very least, I expect the controls to feel better in _Tropical Freeze,_ especially since I can remap buttons on the Switch, if I need to. I'll see about the rest, right now, it's not anywhere near the top of my backlog, anyways.
Kaze has been in my backlog for quite a while. I just started it and so far...I love it! 👍

I know you don't do traditional reviews, but I wish you'd also look at Stitchy in Tooki Trouble. I suspect Kaze is a bit more fleshed out, but I'd be interested in hearing your perspective comparing them.

Yooka Laylee and The Impossible Lair is the best DKC game since Tropical Freeze, but this one has me intrigued, too.
I personally liked Kaze more than The Impossible Lair, even with the nicer features of the IL like a funcional world map and some more unique gameplay features. Kaze has more charm and really feels like a DKC, with its unique ideas too. I recommend 100%.

I picked this game up this morning and have no idea when I’m gonna put it back down.
Dixie is the best Kong only if you if ignore Funky Mode. So yeah she is the best Kong.
I tried Kaze and the helicopter descent felt weird. I went back to DKC2 and it's quite the same but still felt weird. Then I noticed that unlike Kaze, Dixie spins her whole body not just her ponytails while descending. That little detail is just more visually clear, wild and fun.
Yeah its probably more similar to Rayman's float ability
