If this is the studio's first game that they released, then it is a great first attempt and it will be interesting to see where they go next.
Right like if this turns out to be their Mario or 2d sonic/crash mascot I could see a lot of potential for a few different new maze games in the future

This was a really promotion for the game haha. Literally didn't know it existed before this. Might pick it up.
I honestly thought the dragon mask levels were the highlight of the game, I think they actually improved on the DKC minecart levels with how interesting the movement is.

6:15 When you said that some people would say "Oh but that's not a good enough punishment" I was like, Uh in Celeste. Those infinite lives and checkpoints matter! If it went with a normal type of life system, It would've made that game IMPOSSIBLE! Cause that game was made to be brutal. And at least for this game, you have two hits before you die. Celeste was made only to have ONE. So seeing how they handled Kaze and the Wild Masks Difficulty Spike is fine on my Book =)
And to think Ben was telling me he'd have it out next weekend.

This made me instantly add this to my wishlist. Looks like a real fun game, visually stunning!
Haven't really heard of this game until last week. As someone who adores the Donkey Kong Country series this sounds up my alley. I should give it a go when I get the chance.

This game looks interesting. And, thank goodness it's available on the Xbox One and Switch. If I see this game on store shelves, I'm gonna give this one a try. Plus, I like the Donkey Kong Country series to a point (though I haven't played 1-3 yet), so this being reminiscent of DKC makes me want to try it even more. Anyway, entertaining review as usual, Ben.
So, apparently 2 months after my first viewing of this review as well as the comment right above this one that I left at that time. Time for a follow up of sorts, as I just completed the game last night, doing a 100% run no less. This was an enjoyable game. I liked how it mostly took inspiration from Donkey Kong Country, as well as having interesting level designs. The character sprites were clean and well detailed, and the graphics are glorious to look at. Also, Kaze is adorable and cute as all get out. I liked the individual masks offering different play styles for levels working with these masks in mind. I also like how the collectables were handled for 100% completion. The soundtrack was quite good. My favorite track in the game has to be the theme that plays during Buck's Brigade. Speaking of the bosses, they were enjoyable experiences. Every single boss defeat was so satisfying for me when I dealt the final blow after dying a bunch of times. Even the final boss Typhoon was a good fight. As for the difficulty, yeah, I'll admit that it started kicking in after the first 2-3 levels, but it's expected for a Donkey Kong Country-style game. And while most of my deaths in this game were my fault, there were quite a few times where I died due to my Switch controller not working, which more or less turned out to be the Joy-cons disconnecting from the controller, but still felt unfair. And for something that I hated during my playthrough, after beating a level or boss, I kept getting this "connect to internet" prompt that popped up every single time. And when I pressed B or cancel, it goes to the selection of wifi connections for me to "attempt" to connect. And while I got used to it eventually, it got on my nerves real fast, because I was playing in a place without wifi. Which really feels like a slap to the face, because I had to connect to the internet to get my Switch updated so I could play the game in the first place. Overall, wifi issue aside, this game was quite fun, and I'll be interested to see if this game gets a sequel and see what could happen for a second installment. After watching this video after beating the game, I had some similar experiences as you, Ben. Watch Your Step is one of my favorite of the secret levels, I beat the final secret level Bulletvator on my second try, I don't like the levels involving that lantern-fish ghost, and when I reached the final phase of Typhoon's fight, I died without realizing I needed to hit her in the head, though when I reached the final phase a second time, I actually did it. Also, I could have sworn that you said Typhoon's fight was 5 phases long, not 7. But, I could blame that on the fact that I only watched your review once before playing. Anyway, wrapping up, I'm glad I got to play this game, and I have you to thank for this, Ben.
I watched my buddy play this game for about 45 minutes before I decided to buy this game and man am I ever glad I did, it's like a mashup of a bunch of games I loved/ played as a kid

I haven't played enough Donkey Kong Country, I really should... but now I really want to try this game, too! I'll get it when I can on my Switch.

To be honest, this game should have been made with the ubi art framework or something like it. I think it would give the game a much cleaner aesthetic.

Your new avatar is so cute, first off, but this game honestly looks like a cross between Donkey Kong Country and Balan Wonderworld. Instead of putting animal costumes on your body like in the latter, you put animal costumes on your face!

As I'll try to 100% the Game Fully since I got all the Red Gems. Now I just go for the No Hit Badges, the Time Trials and the last playthrough that goes for 2 Hrs. Thanks again for recommending the game. :)

Well I didn't expect to want to get a new game today. And now I want to go back to DKC2 and actually finish it. I started it when it dropped on the SNES Switch service but stopped when one of the bayou levels gave me a hard time

Personally I almost got nostalgic again with this game cause I'm playing another bunny rabbit character outside of Jazz Jackrabbit along with some other rabbit with a monkey but even the masks looks different compared yo the ones from Crash Bandixoot 4 Its About Time.
Wonder if these rabbit people are those depicted by statues in Dust Elysian Tail.

Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but if it's anything like the villain campaigns from Lego Batman 1, I'm excited.
@@BenjaMageit's amazing and the story goes above the batman universe and it had that nostalgic lego batman 1 villain campaign feeling, one thing I love the most is the hub world which is the entirety of gotham and metropolis to explore fully

As much as I really enjoyed the donkey Kong country, the lives really ruined the experience for me due to the game’s difficulty. Dkc series are not bad games, far from it. Probably the best platformers on the snes. But if the game didn’t have lives, I would enjoy it more. And I’m glad seeing more games taking away that lives system away.
This genuinely looks like a fun game. And I might pick it up. Good review by the way.

Hey, not trying to tell you how to run your channel ( honest truth) hearing you say you you don't want to do obscure types right up, have you ever done a video on a game pitch( you know where you talk about your own made up game from scratch)??
(sigh) every indie titles want to imitate Sonic, Crash, Mega Man, Rayman, Metroid, Castlevania, and now, Donkey Kong Country.
No one want to tackle the gameplay physics of Super Mario bros. 3.
Maybe it could happen. A Hat in Time could be compared to 3D Mario so there's that.

Particularly when he gains speed, he actually jumps lower.
Stopping makes it awkward to avoid pits or sometimes enemies, swimming is incredibly heavy to the point of mashing the button is required to get to the upper levels.
He just feels a lot heavier
