Stating that the 1st wave was short-lived ignores the fact that, all through the eighties, and until 89/90, here and there, a few groups were popping up, helping defining the future sound of the 2nd wave pupils, who, from around 85 to 1991, completed their ''BM graduation'' . To make it simple, Sarcófago, Tormentor, Blasphemy, Samael, and somehow Beherit, among others more obscure, due to the geographic distance, were not a ''scene'' but originated the different ingredients that NBM youths would use, fearing not the extremes of near caricature, but in a serious way, not deadpan. Quorthon had the most spot-on view on Norwegian Black Metal scene. He said that those young kids, instead of playing with their teddy bears, they went on and started burning churches, because their conservative society of Norway had them sexually repressed.
11:20 “We don’t stand for socialism. We don’t stand for democracy. We stand for the individual, and the strongest survival.” I don’t know if Gaahl’s views have changed or “evolved” from the time of this recording, but to anyone living outside of Norway or any social democratic country this kind of comes off as ironic and rich coming from Gaahl. It sucks that they didn’t get other bands opinions about the political landscape of Norway that might have affected their bands, their thoughts on “individualism” and what it means to them. I know that Scandinavia’s had successful left-of-center Labour Parties in their parliament going back decades. While many bands are for the most part ideologically left-wing when when comes to economic and cultural politics, it should come to no surprise, right? Since the inception of Metal, low to low-middle class people have used extreme metal to cope with the harsh realities that come with living in a religious and capitalist society; from what I could tell. I speak for myself when I say it’s helped me think about things more critically. Christians (outside of Liberation Theology which I’m not very fond of) here in the states have shown-historically and currently-to priorities the profit motive, wage slavery and Protestant work ethic, anti union and anti-syndicalist movements [something varg should have looked into with regards to anti-clerical action :)] , police states, religious apologia and patriotism in education, and a monopoly on morality. You don’t have to be a stereotype of a modern radical to hold left wing positions as a metalhead, but to be politically ignorant is as embarrassing as being a right winger in the metal scene. Now I don’t believe Gaahl is a right winger or an ignorant person, but in this doc he comes off as holding a reactionary-liberal individualism that I see in a lot of well-off American bands and satanists; in essence, a priority towards contrarian aesthetics; posers. This was probably recorded before Gaahl came-out as gay, so I’m not going to entertain the “strongest survival” thing.
It would perhaps shock you to learn that various forms of right wing political thoughts have been common in metal circles for ages. I don't want to be mean to you but it seems to me that it's either very common to mix metal & politics in your circle of friends or you just want that to be the case because you'd like that. Whenever I've talked to people at festivals, concerts or just at parties among metalheads music and politics were always sepearated as issues unless the topic of NSBM came up and that was rare. I find political ignorance more tolerable if not more honest than either wingnut trying to shame people into sharing their views. (For the record, I think Ghaal is a pretty cool dude, Scandinavian social democracy is not the wet dream of communists nor the capitalists worst nightmare, the right of the individual secures the right for the group since groups are made up of individuals.)
