John Davis: The man. The legend who needs no introduction
John Davis will always be the face of Motor Week. He just has that voice that is so memorable that even if you do not see him on camera. Just hearing his voice alone is all you need to know who it is. Has always been great at these reviews even for cars that are not so great. Good to see him still around.
There’s something comforting about hearing this same voice presenting new car model reviews that I listened to back in the 80s. Please don’t ever retire.
Agreed! I think it's the no bs just facts way of narration, which unfortunately appears to be a foreign concept to modern TH-cam car journos that prefer to praise the bone shattering 'sporty' suspensions, stupidly low seating positions and bash old school physical control laden interiors as 'outdated'.
Sadly everything must come to an end eventually.
I'm glad that MotorWeek finally toned down that idiotic electric guitar music. For a few seasons, this show was unwatchable because of that.
It's so good to see you in 2023 Mr. Motorweek.
Prices are through the roof. It was $35K for an Avalon just a couple of years ago, 0-60 in about 6 seconds through a smooth V6 in a car that had virtually no complaints. Now it’s $53K for essentially the same thing but without a smooth engine.
Joe 🤔
i loved avalon and have owned 5 of them with every one over a hundred to two hundred thousand miles of use with no issues. this obnoxious thing, i will never buy.
v6 with paddle shifters and sport mode in base model and a very comfortable ride with normal auto transmission will be missed. it was an extremely reliable car. i still own 4 of them from 2007 through two 2018. they started losing me in 2019
good buy toyota!!!!
The Crown starts at 41k, not 53. I'm guessing you're comparing the cheapest Avalon to the top-of-the-line Crown. That's apples to oranges. But it's true that prices have risen a lot lately.
Congratulations on your 50year run🥳🥳
The voice never gets old, I grew up to it
Been there since the beginning on Iowa Public Television at noon every Saturday.
I just heard Scott Shannon on 98.1fm 😂. All 80s radio station
I think an upright seating position in a sedan shaped car! sounds pretty nice. The John Davis love in the comments is nice to see!
Toyota builds the AMC Eagle!
“It certainly has a jacked up look to it.” Couldn’t have said it better myself 😂
A lot of things about this car are jacked up.
I just saw one up close today. It has all of the elegance implied by its name and all the Toyota weirdness you could ever want. Amazing car.
Wow I didn’t know MotorWeek was still around! I didn’t have cable for a while so I was excited to see it on PBS! Good memories!
I’d would seriously consider the wagon version that they have in Japan.
Sadly you'll never see one with wagon sales only counting for 1.85% of new car sales and the vast majority of that is the Subaru Outback. SUV's are all that most people want these days.
Great to see John making these reviews! 👍💪❤️
good to see you in 2023 Mr. Motorweek.Congratulations on your 50years
When Toyota finally decides to start producing enough vehicles to actually order one, I'll consider paying attention to them.
Perhaps your beloved Dems will close the nation down again so they can "fortify" the election and we can have even more wars and inflation!!!
there's a lot of crown for sale in my area.
You are so right. I visited two Toyota dealers near me last month. One had a new Camry, a new RAV4, and a new Corolla. No hybrids. Just three gas models. The other had one Camry and one Corolla Cross. You are lucky if you can get one at MSRP. They usually charge a couple of thousand over that. No way am I my paying that for a car. Other car companies make cars that last as long as Toyota now - you just have to know where to look and to find a powertrain and model made for four years or more. Then you get a car that can last 200,000 miles more often than not.
@@Buc_Stops_Herewelcome to Bidens “new America” 😢
That’s odd… there’s a Toyota dealership down the street from my house and I was there this morning and they have like 20 of the Toyota crowns in the back, I’m in Florida though
Going to pickup next week. Love this car
Best auto vehicle reviews channel ever!
Best in class for sure!
I can't wait to get a black Crown Platinum, they look so nice
Looks like a Duracell battery 😅
Spot on.
Awesome car!
We love you J.D.
The voice of car reviews ❤
Toyota could've used the Crown logo for the US-market car instead of the company one.
I want one!
I love the Toyota Crown!!!
Nice car but the 2 tone paint was not done very tasetfully, IMO. Both front and rear views would benefit from solid color. Hopefully that is an option.
Like many others have commented, it's too expensive- mainly for for the GenY folks that would desire this vehicle, and possibly too radical of a styling exercise for the folks that could afford this vehicle. Good luck, Toyota.
It's actually a cool look car, I like it.
It's actually such a cool car.
I love my sedans…but I’ll pass on this one
Your loss
@@allentoyokawa9068nah, it’s Toyota’s. This is one hell of a weird car, and not in a good way.
This is like a sedan for people who prefer sedans but feel peer pressured to get a crossover, so they compromise on...this.
Toyota crown é coroLLa. São espetacular Toyota esta..de..parabéns pelo defendendo dos..carros..Toyota crown lindo mesmo
Not sure why I would buy this Crown. The Avalon is about the most boring car ever produced. My in-laws inherited a 2013 Avalon with 70,000 miles. Dorky as it is, after some $3,500 in repairs due to an older lady not just going to church on Sundays, but hitting curbs, geese, and deer, etc., it's probably good for another 150,000 miles. Still, nice to see John Davis.
Excellent review! As always...
Love it!!
I'm disappointed it doesn't have more ground clearance. At 5.8" it's only 0.1" more than the Camry.
Why? Were you planning to take this luxury sedan off-roading in the desert?
@@mosesberkowitz3298 On Toyota's website it says, "The 2024 Toyota Crown features bold styling and an elevated ride height..." So I expected it to be ELEVATED. A sedan with a lot of ground clearance would be very appealing to someone like ME who often has to drive on snowy roads.
Looks nice I may test drive one and if by chance they have none in that could be a good thing that means they're selling good.
I like the toyota crown sedan in a solid color.😂 there is also an suv model coming soon. 😂
Do you have to charge it or do you just put gas in it?
Looks surprisingly like a modernized Maxima (hence the Crown MAX). Tired of the current trend of tires that are just too darn big for the platform. The wheel set is ugly.
nothing wrong with the wheels
Yeah I'm over the rubber band wheel trend. Give me some sidewall so I can hop a curb without worry, and have better ride quality overall. This isn't a performance car, so it isn't making use of the increased brake clearance and nimbleness low profile wheels provide.
Yea this one is weird. In between a car and a crossover is no place to be
Also, the "Platinum" trim...
When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was a maxima for a second
Amazing!
When Toyota finally decides to start producing enough vehicles to actually order one, I'll consider paying attention to them
I wish they keep making sedans when they do more EVs.
Breathtakingly FUG.
Bring back the Avalon!
Toyota Management are losing their minds
The Avalon is not coming back . Might as well get yourself a used Avalon
Should've had a V6
Why does this exist? Has Toyota even asked themselves this question?
Toyota knew they needed an even more modern take on the already outstanding Avalon and came up with this. Since it's a new concept from Toyota, they decided to capitalize on it by having a higher price of entry.
Not everyone wants an suv.. we need more SEDANS.....
I like it
This vehicle is a disgrace to the Crown badge.
Ahem, ummm....Are you not aware that there's three other body styles of the Crown? (And yes, the OG Crown Sedan is still there) Also disgrace? Have you not seen a Wagon, Coupe or even a Coupe Utility?
@@xraider927 It's funny how in my original comment I said this particular vehicle, and in your reply you mentioned everything else but this vehicle.
If they make the lift back available in the U.S. I will consider it when replacing my lift back Prius.
I think this is cool, but would have a hard time buying it over a Venza.
Toyota may eventually consider killing off the Venza for good.
This is better
Comparing Venza to Crown is a bit "apples to oranges".
@@bobdylan6773This has no utility though. A shame they didn't at least make it a hatch.
WE LIVE IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA, SO FAR I HAVE SEEN A TOTAL OF 1 OF THESE HERE, A WHITE ONE, MUST NOT
BE POPULAR, TOO EXPENSIVE OR NOT AVAIL. YOU CHOOSE.
Rest in peace, Avalon. When your replacement is not as good in any way, especially (expected reliability) you will be missed.. A forced induction four-cylinder will never last as long as the Legendary V6.
Since when did the Avalon need stilts?
I thought raising the car up was dumb too, but a lot of people I talked to in comments made a great point. A lot of Avalon buyers are older folks. Just the other day I saw an old couple that could barely stand get out of one.
So from that point of view, it makes sense to make it a bit easier for them to get in and out.
Avalon is technically not dead yet....China is selling the Avalon at this point.
Your right. The Crown is a disaster. How Toyota made something that ugly is beyond my comprehension.
Just taking a second to appreciate the fact that John Davis has been doing this since i was 1, im 42 now almost 43. What a legand.
Greetings from southern Ontario Canada I really enjoyed the video I work as a funeral director and we have accepted two black crowns for our fleet to be more responsible for the environment
So, the Toyota Corona is back from 1982?
Just when you think the beltline of a sedan couldn't get any higher
It's awful. Bring back the Avalon!
53K? Basically buy a Lexus, right?
Bingo. Should have just made it a Lexus. I don't see this selling well at all
Absolutely,I tell people that often when the price they’re trying to spend as comparable
A comprable Lexus ES is well over 50k no one wants a base luxury car
@@llcross04 umm these are selling like hotcakes
Under your president, nope.
I’ve always thought the Japan market Crown was cool, and it’s good to see a new one here…….but it needs to be a bit WIDER!! It’s too narrow!! Not big, bloated Buick wide, but about 2-3 inches wider. …..would’ve made it a better Avalon replacement.
This is a decent car, but I hate that they put that nameplate on it… This in no way even compares to the Japanese version
Crown was always meant to be the old reliable corporate car. This comes nowhere close to it.
That Avalon looks better.
All this tech to go just as fast as the V6 Camry. Maybe even slightly slower. The gas mileage is virtually no different.
1/4 mile is quick but for some reason I expected it to be faster than that
being a hybrid I am sure it weighs alot more than a normal sedan.
Had it been RWD, it would have been a tad faster
@@moejr1974: FYI: The Camry hybrid is a little bit faster than the regular Camry 4 banger
That gas mileage is subpar. Only 30mpg ...... why even bother making it a hybrid
I agree with you…almost defying what a hybrid model is created for
There is NOTHING wrong with the MPG
They must drive with their foot to the floor. 30 mpg? wth I get 48 mpg in my Rav 4 hybrid Ltd
Because of the turbo and the 6 speed auto.
0:08 there he is!!
My biggest problem is the lack of ground clearance. Not only have I always thought every car should be higher and have AWD, but as soon as the SUV fixation started settling in, I figured the solution was to start SUV-i-fying sedans as soon as possible. Then Toyota comes out with the exactly right idea, and dropped the ball.
Like, I didn't expect an off-road heavy sedan (although that would be kind of cool), but really? If you're not going to lift it, why make it look and market it that way?
Why do you want high ground clearance? You never use it and it causes major body roll or a stiff ride in an attempt to prevent body roll.
@@mbox314Why would you want not to have a lot of room between the ground and the bottom of your car? I use the high ground clearance of the SUV I have all the time. Even just regular driving, 5.something is way too low. The ride and handling in my huge three-row is fine. The Crown was specifically marketed as a lifted sedan, and it should actually be lifted. Not just styled to look like it. It's deceptive and annoying. And a missed opportunity.
Sorry, but Honda did this way back in 2008 with the cross tour
@@radicalcrash.. We love the ingress and egress height. That is one of the many reasons we purchased a Crown limited. Super happy with it at this point. Getting 45 MPG on our 2nd tank of fuel. It has AWD for the winter so we won’t need to go with snow tires like our previous FWD sedan. 👍👍
@@July.4.1776 I'm glad you like your car. But I have no complaints about its body being higher. My problem is, I want actual room between the body and the ground. It's annoying that they make it sound like a lifted sedan when it's really just lifting the seating position. It's dishonest for no valid reason, and it feels like a missed opportunity. I would love a sedan with proper clearance.
Will sell like hotcakes
will you go away. You're like a broken record
THEY SHOULD PUT THE HIGH H.P ENGINE IN THE SIENNA, SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE LACK OF POWER IN
THEM, 245 H.P IN THE SIENNA, COME ON MAN, EVEN CORNPOP KNOWS THAT IS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH.
Crown may look better as a sport hatch. Like the porsche
My Toyota service writer says the ride quality is better than his personal Avalon. And the mpg’s are great.
This crown is going out fast.
For an upscale car they should have given it real gauges instead of fake ones painted on a screen.
troll
@@allentoyokawa9068 False. Digital instrument panels are bullshit and must be called out.
Lots of overcomplicating electronics in here. Only time will tell if it holds up to the elements or fails miserably. Personally? I like it. It's a concept that dates back to AMC. And it's about time Toyota made a new sedan for the market.
I like it!
His puns never gets old
Think i liked the Avalon more.. this thing looks frumpy..
I’m just not sold on the drive train for the new Crown. The hybrid system I’m just not into, I want a car that I want to work on.
I do commend Toyota for providing sedan choices in the heavy crossover market. I’d dig it if it had a manual gearbox but we all know how everyone is about automatics.
I have a 2023 Kia K5, and it looks just like it, especially the profile.
They been had this outside the us
Toyota just give us the 3.5 with the AWD forget the tubo engine
No running lights
Is the Cressida next?
My dad had a 1977 Crown.
Now in my forties I’m fanboying over this instead of Supras 😂
I test drove a standard version. I didn't even know about the max. It was floaty, heavy, underpowered, but comfortable. The steering is too light and devoid of any feel. It is not a hatch but imitates the look and seems cramped inside. It is ugly too. But at least the black one somewhat hides this.
The two tone is interesting. So close to be a hatchback.
I actually really like this car even if it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense - it's expensive, no larger than a Camry, no more ground clearance than a Camry, only middling performance. Why would anybody buy this? I'm not sure that they will. But for the few that will sell, they're a cool, unique car that feels like it was designed for another market (as it was). And has some of that "quiet luxury" appeal of a Land Cruiser - for the few who understand the old money appeal of having Range Rover-priced SUV with a Toyota badge.
Why Toyota decided to put the Crown name on this car is beyond me. The other cars in Japan that held that name would have been sold by Lexus here, or purchased as limousines.
John Davis and MotorWeek starting season 43. Often Imitated, Never Duplicated.
Japanese make a better American car than America.
It's an upscale car yet there is plastic all over the exterior. So it ruins the look for me.
Also, it carries a hefty price premium over the vehicle it succeeds.
We just want the Toyota Alteza / IS300... At a better price please. Similar engines are OK, but why pay these prices when you can get a Hybrid Camry?
A ‘not quite full size’ car is the replacement for a full size car? Is that logical? Seems more like they dropped a car when adding one.
He said in the video, and it's true, that the Avalon wasn't technically full-size either...
Neither one of them are quite full size
Cam-Ray!!!!
Any guesses on the dealer mark ups for these?
Not much, I'd guess, unless they make very few of them. SUV's and high-performance specials are the ones being marked up to the sky.
John Davis had hair and was much younger.
What did you do with him?
Toyota really missed an opportunity to bring "utility-like flair" to this car by NOT making it a hatchback. With the extreme slope to the roofline, the trunk opening isn't much more than a mail slot. And if "utility-like" is what you really want, there are a bunch of SUVs out there for the same $40-50k money with a LOT more than the 15.6 cubic feet of cargo space in this car. Thumbs down for me.
I feel like you just don't get much special out of new cars. It gets a little bit better mileage than my 2001 but not enough considering how far engines and transmissions have come. That with all that useless tech, why bother.
It's a good car but peak car has passed.
Great looking car, but unfortunately AWD and overpriced.
Proof 6 speed transmissions were the right number.
Well mayched colour for this car .......
They gonna go change that name in few months after people get tired of the name calling Crown. I loved my Avalon but this Crown name make me 2 guess.
The Crown name is fine, but the MAX name sounds like a truck.
