I can't believe matt not only separated the party but also separated imogen and laudna, and fearne and orym. I swear if we get a molly situation where one dies and the other isn't there i'm actually not going to be okay.
I'm beyond excited for Uthodurn, i KNOW Travis' goofy ass has some good good tucked away in that joke of a backstory. Also, without Orym, who's closest to Chet by far, only great growth can happen.

@@reaprcussion5703 oh yeah, Ashton + Laudna probably are my favorite pair of the "odd" pairings, as in not the fearn + Orym and the like
also he's paired Laudna up with 2 martial classes and no healer. 2 of their beefiest with their most frail. It will interesting to see how Liam utilizes Orym's protective abilities

@@Mark-ki7ic I doubt that, he's not stupid enough to unleash a god eater if he wants to become a god himself. If he is indeed a 1000 years old (which is doubtful btw, maybe it's not entirely Ludinus in the first place), than he remembers either the Age of Arcanum or at least most of the Calamity and the power that the mages of the past had, so he probably wants to be like the coolest bloke among the non-gods

How many attacks does she have?
@@aethyr4006 well we know she is at least lvl 11 because she has 3 attacks at base. Her backpack gives her Echo Knight powers on steroids. So she has Invoke Incarnation for 1 extra attack per Attack Action. Then she has 3 clones that can attack once per turn. Then she has Action Surge for 1 more Attack Action. So the math is 4(attack and Invoke)+ 3(clones) + 4(action surge)= 11 Attacks. Then because her orginal class as a Psy Warrior gives her Psionic Strike and Telekinetic Thrust, which gives extra damage once and can knock someone prone. Once Kiki was prone, all those attack had Advantage.
Yeah someone with two high level classes is pretty terrifying.

Liam slapping himself after Vax is orbed is one of my moments of the episode I'll always think of because, like us, he needed to make sure that what was happening was actually reality and not some fucked up nightmare
To me, that slap came across more like "get your head back in the game man, you're not vax anymore, gotta get in Orym's headspace, come on!"
I hope everyone gets to enjoy this fun, happy, completely normal and not world-breaking episode.

I really love how everyone's faces are worried and stressed, then there's Travis and Sam are just smiling and loving this shit. They really are men who will push the big red button.

When Keyleth arrived, Ludinus said “Right on *time*.” His specialty is time magic, the thing that Caleb refused to master, the end of the world is coming and he has to try and save it, again.
That’s how you write a villain dude, master class
And I called it after Ep. 50:
Ludinus is a chronomancer, which you are right about with Caleb. And it is ironic that Caleb never did research and learn about chronomancy, despite the plan to save his parents.
And thinking about it now, I'm wondering just how much Ludinus knows, given that Caleb beat Trent Ikithon, despite Trent using Time Stop in Campaign 2, which is a 9th-level spell.
Because if the Aeorians had no qualms about using chronomancy, I really think Ludinus is trying timeshift Exandria to a timeline where the gods were destroyed during the Calamity.
@@isaiahwelch8066 Trent used a magic item to cast Time Stop. He used Invulnerability as his own 9th level spell.
@@isaiahwelch8066 Caleb didn't know the chronomancy school of magic existed. Outside of the Dynasty, the Dunamantic schools are largely unknown. The Cobalt Soul didn't even know (or if they did, they restricted those books). That's why Caleb specialised in Transmutation, it was the closest thing to it (manipulating matter and dimensions, though spatial dimensions rather than temporal)
@@EsquilaxM : Not quite. Caleb did know about certain temporal spells, but not necessarily the school they come from: Haste, Slow, Time Stop. All of these spells affect the passage of time for those affected in some way.

Marisha was killing Matt with her eyes while he was killing Kiki and honestly same 😅 until THAT moment when we all started screaming again
Matt was UNHINGED FOR THIS. I was starting to drift off as they were planning and running around in the beginning, but the second he collared Caleb and chained Beau, I was WIIIIIDE awake. The fact that I didn't scream out loud when Vax appeared is a testament to my will.
It’s a testament to Matt’s storytelling that despite watching the stream and knowing exactly what was going to happen next, I was tense even as I watched all the clips in this video.
Your titles for the different segments are so good. "Deau, a monk, a female monk" had me in stitches.

Seriously. I apparently missed so many of Sam's hand shenanigans...
Some people missed it but Matt clarified two things at the very very end. 1- Irah popped back in but couldn't do anything before the blast, and 2- the sky still has colorful rays of light from earlier.

@@TheSpectacledSteve I mean, in terms of smug looks, I kinda think Ludinus has to take the trophy. He's had 1000 years to practice, and his plan is literally "let's kill all the gods". If that's not hubris, I don't know what is.
But I agree. Ludinus is the Gul Dukat of the series, Otahan is the Kai Wynn. (I would use a certain noseless wizard and his pink-loving associate, but I try not to give JKKK too much attention.) Ludinus is big, bombastic evil. Otahan is more personal. And a bit more realistic in terms of you might know someone like her. Not quite as bad as the religious zealotry of Kai Wynn, or the saccharine cruelty of Professor Pepto Bismol. But still more hate-inducing than Ludinus.

@@joshyboy1983 : Vax isn't dead. He's basically trapped in an amulet just like Grog was in Search For Grog.
Only question is, what has to be done to free Vax? Because way I see it, the Raven Queen herself may actually come to Exandria and deal with Ludinus. But she may stay out of it, at the same point, because her whole thing is not interfering with fate -- the very thing Ludinus is trying to change.
@@isaiahwelch8066 the Raven Queen couldn't come down to Exandria, that's the whole point of the Divine Gate. The spell that was cast on Vax though can be broken with a 9th level dispel magic though, so basically they need to get the orb to Scanlan. Actually, if Keyleth isn't unconscious and didn't get teleported like the Hells, she herself could save him if she has the spell prepared

Out of all the Prime Deities, the Raven Queen is the _only_ deity to actually make an appearance on Exandria -- and I can tell you when: End of Campaign 1, when she claimed Vax. She actually did appear in Vasselheim.
However, I don't think she made an appearance during Vex and Percy's wedding, as when Vax appeared because of Scanlan's Wish, it was only Vax that appeared.
Either way, out of all the Prime Deities that could make an appearance, the Raven Queen is the closest one to Exandria, given her realm is literally the boundary of life and death, fate and fortune. And remember, she has the power to set the fates right, if someone like Ludinus tries to interfere. But that won't make a lick of difference if Ludinus acquires the power of Predathos and manages to timeshift the entire planet of Exandria and it's immediate space to a timeline where the Prime Deities were destroyed during the Calamity -- thus achieving the goal of having a world without gods, and the Prime Deities being forgotten.

I have never before been so emotionally harmed by an episode of Critical Role, even if all I saw of it was just this recap. Actually insane how this episode turned out. Thanks for making the recap.
This was a helluva episode, absolutely loved it and still feeling real anxious about tomorrow - for those who have missed it (I know most will have seen it, but still), Critical Role has changed their logo gradually on social media over the past week, to a more and more red one, the color coming in as an eclipse. It's almost completely red now.
The cards were stacked against BH for this one, and the amount of player agency felt really appropriate imo - they had opportunities to affect the situation in ways that were befitting their characters. Sometimes... we just aren't in control of everything around is. For me, that's what makes CR fun to watch, it's a great story being told, with a living world that has things going on in the background all the time, with just the right amount of interactivity from the involved players. C3 might just be getting started for real.
Matt is one of the best storytellers of our time, hands down. And there are some other seriously good DM's out there, not trying to throw any shade. But the way he weaves in wildly differing dice rolls into the narrative is absolutely insane. (Those who believe it's scripted... just check Sam's ad bits for how good they are at scripted stuff. 😅 Not to mention trying to stay on scripted rails for 4+ hrs... that'd take even more skill, lol.)

With Mighty Nein getting it's animated series, I am now more excited for when/if they animate Bell's Hells, just imagine after two campaigns, seeing the return of characters like Beau, Caleb, Keyleth and Vax. And we don't even know if there'll be more returns, since we are only on episode 51. 😭

I haven't been so emotionally struck by Critical Role since "Between A Ball and A Hot Place" last campaign. I grade this episode "Yikes x100."
This was epic on a whole other level.
I've only become a Critter since C3. Albeit not having seen C1 or C2 fully and only knowing the bigger fanfave moments and the Legend of Vox Machina, the scene with Vax broke me so bad. He has always been there, always watching over Keyleth. All I can think about is "how am I ever supposed to get over you, if you keep sending ravens?" and I think he actually never stopped sending them, ever.
I wonder if Travis reaction by the end is due to everything that is happening or its Chetney being shocked/worried that he's back home.

This has to be the craziest episode of any of the campaigns right?!
No. The only episode I can think of that was crazier than this is when the Conclave attacked Emon in Campaign 1, or, barring that, when Vex instantly died in the tomb where Vax made the deal to become the Raven Queen's champion, in order to save Vex.
Definitely not the craziest episode, but certainly one of the craziest endings lol. There are a lot of episodes that are batshit from second one straight through to the end so the ranking system is difficult. 😆 Ranking moments Vs entire episodes as a whole.

I haven't hated a villain this much in a really long, long time. I want him to get put in his place so badly.
It's insane how the dice tell the story sometimes. If Liam and Marisha hadn't rolled low on their Caleb and Beau rolls, things would've ended so differently. Also, Laura's low roll when trying to persuade Liliana.
Edit: I forgot the most important dice roll in this episode. Otohan's 21 initiative roll.
20:22 The look on Marisha's face. That is a look that says, "You're sleeping on the couch for the next year and a half."
I'm gonna imagine that there is a third group of people stranded somewhere on the planet consisting of Keyleth, Beau, Caleb (and possibly even Vax?!)

I’d been wondering for a while how Chetney’s past was going to come into play, since it was so far to the north. Can’t wait to see the thematic leap from end of the gods to Santa runs a cult.

I'm still so hyped up for the next episode, because there's so much in the air with that ending! Ruidus is still over the sky, the beam is still happening, but half the party somehow got shunted elsewhere? Was it only them? Did all the Exaltants and the people there get shot away somehow? Did Keyleth and Beau and Caleb or did only the party somehow get out? Clearly Ludinus was nervous at the end. His power source was too weakened, something wasn't quite right and he still performed the ritual, so something did happen but he must have paid the price for it. I think he tried to teleport everyone there through the divine gate over Ruidus, so they could unmake it from within or something, but the lack of power failed to reach that far. Because of that, the party fell out of the warp and landed back randomly across Exandria. It's going to be very interesting to see how all these ties come back and we learn what the fuck happened

Probably the most gut-wrenching moment for me is when Liam tried to destroy the pack worn by Otohan.
A 70% chance to succeed, and the dice gave Liam the biggest "F-U" to date...
Because I can't think of a closer situation where it seemed success was likely, yet the dice "noped" on the player rolling it.
If Matt kills Vax _Again_ I will lose my mind! What are you doing Matt!?! Why must you hurt me so?
In the Taldori reborn book The Raven's Champion can't be killed permanently as he is the imortal champion..so him being used as a divine focus just means that the Raven Queen might have sent him to add her bit to what happened..also Vax did promise to look after Kelyth forever..so promise is a promise.

Considering how Otohan attacked I think it's fair to say she was holding back during their previous encounter.
Also, I thought Beau had a feat that let her break out of a charm spell. It must have been something far above that.
I am curious to see how things develop from here. They may need the help of a blue tiefling and half-orc captain.

Everyone's all Omg Matt wants to kill them all! and I'm like, no, Matt made a difficult but solvable encounter and laid out clues for them to solve and they didn't listen and scattered. Also to be fair Chetney did try to tackle Ludinus and got impaled! A for effort.
Using just the stuff from the time they got to this location, Matt made a point of saying that Ludinus was being Purposefully sloppy through Caleb and Beau. That alone should have told them that this was a trap and that he needed something from someone (I would have probably assumed it was Imogen honestly with her Red Moon powers, so it being Vax was the twist of all twists, yet it's also supported by clues if you look. So maybe they should've been careful about that, And maybe warned their allies but oh well).
The next hint was Ludinus' followers wearing the Matron of Raven's Talisman despite not worshiping her. That should have been a red flag. Again even if you don't know specifically what's going on you know, ok it involves the MoR, what do we know about her? etc. Honestly my thought was that maybe Ludinus was trying to implicate the Matron in Predathos' release and drive a wedge between her and the other gods. Their relationship is already tenuous.
I mean the connection to the Matron has been there the entire campaign. We really should have seen Something coming, but Matt's tricksy.
Plus they totally could have jumped Otohan in that side room and tried to take her out while she was by herself, Matt gave them a brief opportunity to try to take a piece off the board and they chose not to.
Also if they had stopped rolling like shit for Caleb and Beau that would have been super helpful, I imagine Caleb could have counter spelled Ludinus' shield spell around the Maleus key allowing the Airship to do some damage if he was free and then it would have been a bigger battle where Ludinus probably would have had to fend them off and try to do his magic shenanigans.
Also Caleb & Beau would have been around to recognize the Luxon Beacon in a non meta gamey way and could have called out to the group that it was important.
And that Nat 1 for Imogen and her Mom wasn't particularly helpful either lol. Frankly I think the dice were rooting for Calamity 2.0.
this episode was so stressful to watch, idk if i can handle watching the replay, just this single video getting me through this week

I have literally never seen Taliesin make a face like that ever in CR history like he made when Vax showed up. It was amazing.
