As an IT guy, I learnt to turn ideas into reality by research, design, think, review, think, review, think, review and only then build. Yours is the only van build series that has clearly done that. The design/build it as you go approach may be valid, but leads to most people having a big list of things they wish they'd done differently. And the van becomes an ongoing reconstruction project.
kevgermany I had a pretty solid plan from the start to know where I needed to run services during first fix. My years of project management obviously paid dividends there. Thanks for the appreciation
This was the best explanation of the Truma Combi system that I have seen. Even a tour of the Truma factory in Munich Germany, with commentary by Truma engineers, produced by the Fit RV, another RV channel on TH-cam, did not cover it as well as you did. Kudos to you for a great and informative video. Cheers from Houston Texas!
I am a mechanical services electrician, although we do things more so related to cooling rather than heating in Australia, fantastic video series you are producing a big thumbs up
Greg, Thank you very much for putting all this very usefull info out. As a fellow engineer, I really like that you have thought trough everything yourself instead of copying from one video to the next. I see people doing things that makes me rethink all their information, but I also don't want to reinvent everything. I don't worry about that with your videos. I'm going to build next 6 months and then travel around Europe for atleast a year. Your videos are very helpfull. Thanks!
Yes I too have seen lots of silly mistakes and mis information. I do my best to give the right information that also com plus with any codes and standards so I’m happy that you are getting sound advice. Thanks for the great feedback and best wishes with your build 😃
Very nice presentation. I have been using my Truma in our RV since 2008 and still working as good as new. Good quality and great performance. Don’t have the option of electric heating of the water but yet but that is a spare part that I hope to install now that I am extending my roof solar from 100 watts to 1000 watts and a 3000 watt inverter.
That’s great to know you’ve had 9 years good service. I’m only planning to use the electric heating when on hook up as 900w or 1.8kW would kill my batteries in no time.
Greg, Thank you for what you are doing, this is clearly the best video series on the subject matter available on the internet. I genuinely appreciate the effort you are putting in. I am trying to share it with anyone who is interested in the topic. :) have a great one and keep em coming!
I was surprised to see that this kind of heater exists factory made. I have planned to make a same type of heater system with a diesel Eberspächer/webasto, a radiator, a watertank and piping with reservoir and "coolant". Great video, as all the ones before. Really helped with planning my build!
You sir, know your requirement and the correct solution very well! I enjoyed your explanation of the heating system & its functions. Seems like high tech equipment. The ability to have a place to dry clothes is a advantageous. Eagerly waiting for the installation video.
Hi I’ve only just discovered your Amazingly informative videos. Your very generous to be sharing your thoroughly researched results, that you put across very well. I for one am thankful
Many thanks, Mark, I had two bites at this one, the first days shooting it took me an hour to get 30seconds of usable film. Still, there's plenty in the can for the gag reel lol
Warm air heating has been about since Roman times, and the boiler since the industrial revolution, but now we can control it to fractions of a degree and from anywhere we like. Definitely a very nice bit of equipment.
did you know ...the Truma name was founded in 1949 in germany , and was actually named after the u.s president Truman. it was named after him as a mark of respect for his efforts and support in rebuilding and restoring germany after ww2.
Another excellent video Greg , I have been pondering what system to put in my sprinter as we are at the same stage of the build in our sprinter. You have most definitely sold me on the trauma system also my wife as she’s always cold and it’s a big concern for her , Thanks for another great video and eagerly awaiting the next instalment
Another great piece of info Greg. I was originally thinking of a heater similar to the night heater in my truck running on diesel, but this system is far superior & combines the hot water function. Once again your info is a great help in my research before I take the plunge.
As an update, there are more affordable versions of the Truma around now that run off diesel and/or electric - we bought ours from Bobil Vans and it's fantastic. After-sales is great too.
Nice one Greg... I hope your keeping all the plans and blueprints as you go, because I would want you to mass produce these motor-homes and I will want to be your first customer!!!!!!!
Hello, I have got all the details. Looking into producing a self build guide. I can now appreciate why motorhomes cost so much. The labour alone is a lot of hours. I’m gonna need a holiday after this project. 😂
Thank you for explaining how this works, excellent diagram and detail! Its a very efficient system. Outside and inside air are heated, and while air heater is on, it also heats up the water, very smart! The phone app and SIMM card remote control, propane tank accurate gauge is just genius! Truly remarkable German technology! Even named after US President Truman! When I build my van, I don't care how much this costs or how hard to get hold of one, I am getting this system and no other. Its a marvel of science and so beautifully created that it should belong in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Here are some other facts for viewers: 1. The only deal breaker for Americans may be that this runs on 240V so do they make a version for US market at 110V or will this run on a step down adapter from 240V to 110V? 2. I looked up cost on ebay and its not cheap at US $2700 approx. 3. Truma in Germany does not sell the Combi directly to consumers, only dealers. 4. You can look up specs and buy it from this Aussie dealer at AU $2400 + AU$32 shipping. www.mygenerator.com.au/truma-combi-4e-kit-gas-heater-hot-water-system.html 5. The weight of the Truma Combi 4e is 15.8 kg or 35 lbs 6. On the link above, you see all accessories, ductwork diagram, and specs. 7. Yes, you can run the water heater independently of the furnace heater. However, your hot water is also heated for free if you run the furnace. 8. Combi runs on a variety of fuels and power sources: gas, diesel, propane, AC, DC, and using hot engine while driving if you duct it that way. Refer to link above. Thank you Greg, for another great video and adding to the RV/Caravan knowledgebase!
Thanks for the great video! I'd still go for diesel version if you plan for more than couple of days offgrid in cold weather. Combi 4 eats around 0.2Kg (0.4L) LPG per hour in a van like your Sprinter with 0-20 temperature gradient. This is roughly 10L LPG tank per day even without cooking and hot water. And Webasto dual top can be mounted outside and free additional 70L of living space.
I will give you some exact usage data once we are on the road. Its all relative to how well the van is insulated as to how long the heater is running. Plus if we are cooking the heating will not be required either. We don't plan to spend too much time in the cold as winter camping is not very enjoyable. We will be on the Med by winter where its a bit more temperate.
Hello Anthony, I have a video showing how to install the boiler and you can watch that here th-cam.com/video/zCjygu0ygKE/w-d-xo.html I don’t have a video about the electric elements as I’ve never needed to change them.
Brilliant Greg been looking for a video on these Heaters as I planing to fit one seen plenty of good reviews on them but not any good videos looking forward to seeing your up coming videos . thanks
Another wonderful video from a master content creator! Love the Truma Combi units. However, they're way out of my price range. Therefore, it's a 16K BTU direct-vent propane heater, plus direct-vent instant hot water heater (also propane-fueled) for me. As always, I'm looking forward to your next great video Greg. Keep up the brilliant work.
Looking at a weekend / holiday (short term) campervan and doing my sums. The Combi 4e is €1,719.91 which is alot for what I need. Im looking at a separate boiler and heater (propex) and can do that for about €800. I know its space for 2 devices but I could do with that €1000 somewhere else. Love the truma but at over €1700 its not great value for a now and again camper. Would be ideal for full timer.
@@GregVirgoe would need a shower / toilet so some sort of water heater needed. Looked at videos on other heaters and it's not hard to see why truma is so popular even at that price.
Hello Erik, we are currently filming the installation of the services. The water tanks are done, next is the heater, will be out very soon. Thank you for watching.
I know you can insulate the area this will be contained in but do you know how many db's radiate. Thank you for the video's Greg, I've searched around on TH-cam and this is the most informative I've found so far... Just brilliant.
Hello Tony, I do not have the data for dB rating. Centrifugal fans are usually very quiet these days. As long as you have adequate airflow and not restricted it should be quiet.
very smart .. when it works - our Truma combi 4 e does not heat the air enough on gas/mains, AND overheats the water to the point where the red outlet pipe melts from the heat.. how come a temp sensor is not controlling this?
Hi Anneliese, I found the same with my roof fans and had to get them shipped from the states. Paid more with shipping and taxes but we wanted that particular fan. I will ask Truma about USA dealerships. Thank you
In the cut through section, I showed where the water inlet and outlet are connected. You would use a normal pressure boost pump such as shurflo or similar and connect from water tank via boiler to your taps etc I will be covering the water distribution system in another video very soon.
Hi Greg. Great video and great use of Sketchup too. Didn't you say in your video that you were to shoot a video of the Truma being installed? Have you done it yet? Can't find it and definitely need it as I am planning installing mine in the coming weeks or so! :)
I'm sure that's a great heater, but I'd still go with an Eberspächer (Espar) Hydronic unit and a small heat exchanger; that gets you hot water without a tank. You can hook up another heat exchange to the glycol and that one will generate hot air instead of hot water. Rixen in the US has a kit, albeit for 120 volts (for the electric heater that can be used instead of diesel when you have shore power.)
Hello, to heat water instantaneously via a heat exchanger at a flow rate sufficient to have a shower you would need a big heat source. Most combi boilers that do that in domestic properties are rated at 30kW or 100,000Btu Good luck with your build, let me know how it works out. Cheers
Thank you .I was looking so hard for a fibreglass moulded shower for a few months now but I'm dead in the water with that one for my budget. But thank you for your help and info on your videos. 👍👍👍
Another great video Greg! I'm a little late to this party but I just stumbled unto Truma heaters via a friend. Can you recommend anyone in the UK that sells Truma combi heaters that may ship to the US? Thanks
Yes absolutely no doubt it has been the best thing we fitted to our van and I would pay double to fit one again. It has worked so well and flawless for all those years. Highly recommended 🤩
Greg Virgoe I'm not sure, I can't say right now. At the moment I'm gonna travel a bit more by car. I'll wait until you finished your video series, for even more inspiration for what's possible 🤔 Thank you again for this great channel!
Greg - thanks so much for these brilliant videos - really clear and informative. I'd love to know whether this combi would be practical to work on electric input, as i'm trying to avoid an extra gas tank. Would it be practical/efficient?
@@sallywilliams6272 the Truma has two 900W electric heaters inside where the Therme has just one 300W element. So to heat the same quantity of water the Therme would take 6x longer. In the end they would have used the same amount of electric.
Hi Greg, great video thanks. Quick question - how does the the Truma wire into the 12v electrics? Can it go straight into a blade fuse in the box or does it need to go via a breaker? Also on the 240v side? Many thanks
Silly question, but can you take it out the box and plug it in to mains and just use it as a heater? As not to worried about hot water just want a good heater. Thanks
Hi Greg. Thanks for the wonderful videos. I have a thought. How do you think it would be to use one of the four outlets to blow hot air into several 30mm pipes in the floor as underfloor heating? For example, with XPS made for waterborne heat where the air comes out on the other side of the floor.
Another excellent video Greg. One question though. It was not obvious whether or not you can get hot water WITHOUT having the van heater on. Is this possible with this unit or does it only heat water when the air heater is operational?
Great video again Greg! We were or maybe are going to go for the Truma 4e but I've seen a few videos and a lot of people claiming you only get 1m 50s of hot water in a shower. Thats ok for me, but if the wife is washing her hair that's not long enough. Are the water heaters window cleaners use not a better option in a camper for continuous hot water (providing you can supply it with a decent feed?)
The Truma heats up to 60°c so you have to mix that with same amount of cold to bring it down to shower temp. Best to use a head like ours with a trigger so not wasting water when lathering 🧼 then you have plenty to rinse. Obviously it’s not like at home but it’s definitely sufficient for us.
Hi Greg, I have almost finished building a new caravan out of an old one and have installed a Truma 2E Water/Space heater. Gas and 12 volt were done by qualified tradesmen and I have followed your excellent videos for water plumbing (which is all working well). However, your videos indicate that, once the sensor and data cable are connected to the unit, the sensor should be sending the signal to the control panel but I can't seem to get the control panel screen to open and there is no backlight coming on. Are there any other steps to get it working? The control pad has the horizontal line across the top of the screen and I've tried holding the button down for a few seconds as well as touching the screen but to no avail. I've also checked all fuses including the 10 amp fuse in the unit. Can you help? Thanks & Regards, Barrie (I live in Australia)
The CP control panel also needs a 12v supply protected by a 1Amp fuse. There should be a short plug and lead to connect onto the controller and to put power to. That will bring the controller to life 👍🏼🤩
Thanks Greg, Before I contacted you I had phoned Truma Australia who asked me had I connected the Data Cable between the unit and the CP and indicated that this was the power source. However, it seems it's not. I bought the heater new about 4 years ago and on the list of inclusions in the kit, #6 is "CP Plus GV". Do you know what the GV is? Everything has been in boxes since I bought it but I haven't seen the little lead you mentioned. Can you explain where this lead should be connected? Also on the list (#7) is a Sicherungshalter which I have - Does this have anything to do with the little lead? Thanks again, Barrie
I was already fitting a GASLOW refillable LPG cylinder for cooking. LPG is a cleaner fuel, greener and about half the cost of diesel. Just because I have a huge tank of diesel under the van doesn't make it the better choice.
So would a gas powered propex or similar heater with no boiler still produce condensation or were you referring to different type of heater like a Coleman gas heater?
John Anom no not at all where the pump is situated straight off the tank it pressurises the entire system hot and cold because it’s on the cold feed to the boiler so it’s pressurised going into the boiler.
Hello Greg, ¿Can you tell which are de pros and cons about de diesel option of truma combi D6? ¿Is a good idea to run a webasto diesel kitchen and a truma combi D6 in order to avoid gas in the van? Thank you
I can't believe it's got 2 dislikes! Excellent video, maybe I'll see you touring Europe in the summer, 4 months and 5800 miles planned! On the level sensor, what happens if you have 2 bottles? Gaslow is steel, why not Alugas, lighter, any disadvantages? I'm looking at re-fillable ones to.
Hi Malcolm, you never know our paths could cross, sounds like you have a definite route planned. We are going to be much more winging it. For two cylinders you will need a level control device attached to each one, the level of each is displayed separately on the App. The device is magnetic so steel tank is preferable. Although they do a fixing bracket for non magnetic cylinders. www.truma.com/uk/en/products/truma-caravan-rv-gas-fittings/truma-levelcontrol.html
It is incredible, it just works so well and we use it mostly on eco mode and you can hardly hear it so quiet. You have the benefit of dual fuel when on hook up and the remote control via app on your phone even when away from the vehicle is one of the best features. You won’t regret it 😊
This is a huge bummer. Just found out that I cannot get the truma furnace/ water heater for dwisel fuel here in the US. Only motorcoach manufacturers can get it😬
this stuff is brilliant - i am about half way through and just fitting it all now! Quick one - do you need an expansion vessel for one of these truma that i bought on your very fine recommendation? Thanks for this stuff - invaluable
Hi Greg, As everybody says, your videos are by far the best out there for both the way it is presented and the knowledge passed on. My question is why did you choose the 4E over the 2E or 6E, Thanks Greg
At the time the 4E was the smallest option available and given the choice now it would still be better for heating the water quicker. I think 6kw would be far too much
Hi, yes I’m good thank you. The Truma is just amazing. The best thing in our van it just works so well. Plenty of hot water for shower and warms the van up in minutes. Can’t praise it enough. 👍🏼😊
@@GregVirgoe awesome, thanks Greg. I’ve just installed one in our build, not got it operational just yet but good to know We’ve got the right solution 😉
Hi Greg, what is the power consumption of this device and what kind of electrical system you suggest to have in order to run it well? Especially in my case where I do not want to use gas in the van. Thank you!

David Farrell if it’s just a small weekend van then go with a simple heater and boil water in a kettle. That’s more in your market.
@@GregVirgoe would need a shower / toilet so some sort of water heater needed. Looked at videos on other heaters and it's not hard to see why truma is so popular even at that price.
Hi Greg
are you able to have hot water without having the heating on e.g. summer time, if we every get one ;-)
thanks
Yes it can
Nice video well done Greg :-)
Thank you very much Malte
Love your straight forward yet comprehensive explanation of this fantastic product. When is the install video coming out?
Hello Erik, we are currently filming the installation of the services. The water tanks are done, next is the heater, will be out very soon. Thank you for watching.
Brilliant. Where can i find you for servicing and repairs?
Mr. D A this is not something I do for a business, this is a self build camper van. Please speak to Truma service dept at the head office in Derby. 😀
Great video as always! When will you do the installation?
Video will be out very soon 😀
LOVE THE VIDEOS.
Can you heat the the water without heating the van up if in a hot country or in the summer
Of course! Its two separate functions in one package. Use one or the other or both.
A great product! Looking forward to seeing the installation process. Keep on truckin Greg...Now it's really coming together! ;-)
Thank you very much Andy
Cost..
I looked at all your video. All excellent. Thank you. Do you have a video on shower installation? Paul from Quebec, Canada
To be released very soon Paul. Thanks
Hi. Thanks for this video. Would I be able to run a recirculating shower of a Truma 6E? Advice appreciated
very smart .. when it works - our Truma combi 4 e does not heat the air enough on gas/mains, AND overheats the water to the point where the red outlet pipe melts from the heat.. how come a temp sensor is not controlling this?
Im presuming you have to have water in the system (tank) and for it to be bled properly before you can turn it on at all
Awesome video! Thank you. looking forward to the follow up installation videos as well .
Have been running all the power and control cables for this system today. :D
Thanks for the great video. Here from the states and I there are no dealers here.
Hi Anneliese, I found the same with my roof fans and had to get them shipped from the states. Paid more with shipping and taxes but we wanted that particular fan.
I will ask Truma about USA dealerships. Thank you
Hi Greg. You showed in the video hiw the heating system connect but You didn't explain how the hot water works.
Thanks
In the cut through section, I showed where the water inlet and outlet are connected.
You would use a normal pressure boost pump such as shurflo or similar and connect from water tank via boiler to your taps etc
I will be covering the water distribution system in another video very soon.
Hi Greg. Great video and great use of Sketchup too. Didn't you say in your video that you were to shoot a video of the Truma being installed? Have you done it yet? Can't find it and definitely need it as I am planning installing mine in the coming weeks or so! :)
Yes, we will be doing a detailed video of the installation very soon.
Most combi boilers that do that in domestic properties are rated at 30kW or 100,000Btu
Good luck with your build, let me know how it works out. Cheers
Awesome bit of kit. Can I ask what your gonna do for a shower cubicle tho.
Hello, I have a Thetford C200 cassette toilet with a built-in shower tray.
The walls of the cubicle will be covered with Altro Whiterock PVC sheeting.
Thanks
5 Years on, would you still use this combi system, Gregg? How has it fared over the years?
Yes absolutely no doubt it has been the best thing we fitted to our van and I would pay double to fit one again. It has worked so well and flawless for all those years. Highly recommended 🤩
Thank you so much for this video! I didn't even consider putting putting a heater in my van (I don't have the van yet).
I guess it depends where you plan to travel? What type of van are you looking for?
Greg Virgoe I'm not sure, I can't say right now. At the moment I'm gonna travel a bit more by car. I'll wait until you finished your video series, for even more inspiration for what's possible 🤔 Thank you again for this great channel!
Greg Virgoe Northern of Europe is on top of my list, so a heater may be a good idea 😀
Bugger... I just bought the Propex Malaga kit but am regretting it now! You've just sold the truma to me
As we’ve found the more you look around and do research the more options you discover. We were originally looking at separate units.
amazing video! very impressed.
Greg - thanks so much for these brilliant videos - really clear and informative. I'd love to know whether this combi would be practical to work on electric input, as i'm trying to avoid an extra gas tank. Would it be practical/efficient?
It would be fine on electric hook up but would draw too much power from a battery system. 👍🏼😃
@@GregVirgoe thanks v much for speedy reply! - good to know. Guess that would be the same for a Truma Therme too then…
@@sallywilliams6272 the Truma has two 900W electric heaters inside where the Therme has just one 300W element. So to heat the same quantity of water the Therme would take 6x longer. In the end they would have used the same amount of electric.
@@GregVirgoe exactly what I needed to know, and could never have worked out! Thank you, I owe you a beer!
Thanks
I’ll be honest I’m not sure it would work without water in it?
Love your videos mate!
Thank you, much appreciated.
Yes you can just use it to heat the hot water and not have the heating on in the van.
Greg Virgoe how much does this unit cost.?
Simply amazing! Such a great help these videos are 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi, where did you purchase extra lengths of hoses?
Direct from Truma spares dept in Derby. Rang over the phone and ordered the parts quick delivery.
Thanks for confirming Greg! Look forward to more of your videos. All the best
Can you buy the gas level detector separately ? Looks like a pretty awesome bit of kit!
Yes the gas level gauge is available separately.
Why didn't you get the diesel version since you already use diesel to run the sprinter?
kittadyne that's what I would do. 1400 quid tho. For a heater.
Exactly what I asked myself... I had diesel powered air heaters in two of my campervans and they were quite moderate in their consumption of fuel.
Why don't they make a system heat exchanger that takes heat off the exhaust to warm the water and as backup electric
Do you need a extra pump on the hot water outlet?
John Anom no not at all where the pump is situated straight off the tank it pressurises the entire system hot and cold because it’s on the cold feed to the boiler so it’s pressurised going into the boiler.
@@GregVirgoe thank you very much for your reply... I have enjoyed watching your videos very informative. Love your work
John Anom thank you for supporting the channel 👍🏼
how is your condensation? are you getting as much condensation as gadget John? cheers.
Not bad at all, we just get a small amount on the front screen, but we always leave heating on low and the roof vents open, very important.
Hi Greg. Do you still use CBE level gauge for your water tanks. Is there a way to connect water level gauges to the iNet?
Just wondered what gas safe qualification you need to fit the boiler?
Hello Greg,
¿Can you tell which are de pros and cons about de diesel option of truma combi D6?

Greg Virgoe thanks for that I'll look into it, yep you never know, take care 😀
How has the truma performed thus far? Think you sold me on it.
We have a 5 year old Truma Combi Boiler, and works very well, do they require descaling?
Hi Greg, As everybody says, your videos are by far the best out there for both the way it is presented and the knowledge passed on. My question is why did you choose the 4E over the 2E or 6E, Thanks Greg
At the time the 4E was the smallest option available and given the choice now it would still be better for heating the water quicker. I think 6kw would be far too much
Hi Greg, hope you’re well? Question how have you found the Truma now it’s been installed for a few years? Does it provide enough water for the shower?
Hi, yes I’m good thank you.
The Truma is just amazing. The best thing in our van it just works so well. Plenty of hot water for shower and warms the van up in minutes. Can’t praise it enough. 👍🏼😊
@@GregVirgoe awesome, thanks Greg. I’ve just installed one in our build, not got it operational just yet but good to know We’ve got the right solution 😉
@@RiazRJ my favourite thing is the iNet box, lets us speak to the van remotely anywhere in the world in fact via GSM mobile technology. is so clever
I foooooking love your videos. THANKS
Thank you very much
You are the Man 👍👍
Thank you 🙏🏼
Hi Greg, what is the power consumption of this device and what kind of electrical system you suggest to have in order to run it well? Especially in my case where I do not want to use gas in the van. Thank you!
Great explanation. I have the same question as rusty travels does (from 1 month ago). Is there a function to heat water without heating the van?
Yes there is. One or the other or both. See my post above with a link for an Aussie dealer which lists Truma Combi specs.
