F-Droid isn't perfect, and I started using it despite all the paranoia about "third party app stores", but I love it so far!
It's the best we've got until Linux OSs become more common on mobile devices.

3rd party app stores aren't a concern. It's some stuff on them, but Google doesn't properly audit all the developers on their store either - cheatah mobile, certain emulation apps and more and Apple has let stuff get past them too.

I would de-google my phone but damn. i need Discord, Steam, my bank app, twitch, Cenguage and Canvas for school, and Minecraft mobile i already paid for. Im guaranteed to come across SOME situation where i need an app and i cant get it because of some bs "pHiLoSoPhY reeee" Unless there's a real solution, its a nope for me and that sucks. Especially not being able to use my bank app. The desktop Website total ass probably to use to get me to use the app instead 🙄 I also need MS-Teams for work.

I went to apkpure's website and checked the f-droid apk, but it didn't work out. I got this response: "[Not Trusted] This F-Droid.apk APK is a modified version, we don't recommend installing". Am I missing something? Or did I just actually get something that was tampered with? Oh, and I got the f-droid apk from their official website.🤔
I want to make an addendum for the NewPipe section of your video: if NewPipe ever stops working (sometimes it happens) or if you aren't a fan of the UI, an alternative is SkyTube which does something very similar and is also on the Fdroid store. NewPipe works well for me 99% of the time, but sometimes it'll have hiccups where Google blocks it from connecting to TH-cam (and SkyTube has this happen as well). So in case one isn't working, you can temporarily switch to the other

I just tried to verify the F-Droid.apk using the methods you describe in your video.
APKPure says [Not Trusted] This F-Droid.apk APK is a modified version, we don't recommend installing it.
When using gpg in a linux terminal says, Can't check signature: No Public key.
I always like to verify files if an option exists.
I even looked on the forum on F-Droid, there are a couple of threads discussing how to verify using the PGP, but they do not offer any usable answers, just people getting frustrated like me.
Why do they insist on using PGP, why not SHA 256 or 512 ?
I scanned the f-droid apk file on apk pure website and it said it was not trustworthy "modified version or not published on Google Play Store". :/
I got the same thing and i even tried older version of F-droid and its still popping up as not trustworthy.

New Pipe is already blocked by the captcha message it is setup to automatically trigger on startup. It was only able to import 1k subscriptions too. I don't know if that's the limit for YT export or a New Pipe limit. 1K is most of mine but not all. I wish it would work, but nothing will play. Thanks for the F Droid recommendation though.

How can I make f-droid my main os not run Android on my phone at all??? If this makes since
I've executed the F-Droid.apk with pureapk authentication process but the apk from the F-Droid site does not pass. I've also tried to authenticate it with the PGP signature, but I can't find F-Droid's public key. Has anybody else had this issue?

-its often really slow (for example the website load really slowly
-it's ugly, I feel like the user interface is from 2012 or something
Do I use fdroid tho? Of course i do, i love it, i use a front end called Aurora Droid (available on gitlab for free) and the UI of this app is really great (it also have more repo by default and features)

@Suhaib A I was wondering what that message looked like though. I found out an app downloaded from the play store contained actual malware via reddit but play protect never tried to uninstall it. A few days later it was removed from the play store but I already uninstalled it myself.
I've been using Fdroid for years on both phones. One rooted with custom OS and the other stock. I highly recommend checking it out.

Tibor Kaputa, creator of Simple Apps. I love him. This guy is a genius. For me a smartphone application should be as basic as that at least and easy to use without data theft, I use almost all Simple Apps.
I use a lot of his Simple Apps. The only one that gave me a problem was the music player - it deleted my playlists - unless I somehow knocked the microSD card and that erased my playlists...

Android is largely open source, and only certain parts are proprietary mystery blobs that can do the spying & tracking in secret. There are forks of Android like Replicant or LineageOS (esp. with microG) that strive to replace those.
Plus, it's not only Google who tracks you, but many apps & services as well. So even if you can't get rid of Google completely, it's still useful to have access to alternative open-source apps, or restrict what proprietary apps can to, if you still need them.
man after installing the simple contacts on my xiaomi phone and replacing the eye bleach standart one my eyes have been blessed that if u try to add the contact it actually adds it i love f droid already.

They won't be malicious, that's for sure. The only thing malicious is when you don't know what you're doing (since some apps need a couple of steps to do before you're able to use them), which can be groundbreaking and may even lead your device to malfunction.

Looks like Fdroid can't reach the repo server. If you have any apps (antivirus, firewall, ...) that restrict internet access, check that F-droid is allowed to use the internet?
Otherwise, try downloading it again from the website and installing the apk again?

Does anyone know how tight apps are monitored on malicious code. From what I've read you can not install from 3rd party repositories without explicit warnings, this is good. Though I wonder how easily people could get a legitimate app through on F-droid and later inject some malicious code. Google Play Store is closely monitored and you can very safely assume no malicious code will ever get on your device. Open-source apps are notorious for only being checked in equal accordance to popularity and even then the checks will be underwhelming in amount. I say this to warn people who might be as tech-savvy as they think and come across this video.
I have noticed in your video sometimes you make pretty broad assumtions on the knowledge of your viewerbase in the relevant topics, and I'd love for you to bring some more attention to this fact, Computer sience is a equally deep as it is broad of an topic with lots of complicated subjects and fields, some of which even I have very little knowledge of. In working with average computer-users from time to time, I have noticed that even I sometimes struggle to think or imagine from their perspective, I over estimate knowledge of topics fairly often! Otherwise great videos and keep spreading awareness!

I use netguard but it doesn't seem to work because I already use a VPN
netguard and similar apps make your mobile data connection act like a pseudo/virtual VPN server. As android only allows a single vpn to work on a device, you must be facing this problem. But as you are already using a VPN, you don't really need another app to control data access, you should be able to do the same from within your VPN settings itself...

U can use ddg in brave. Ddg is a search engine n brave is a browser. U cant compare them.

@@Skiillzero I don't think he has any special degree or training; my guess is that he simply loves the subject, and reads & hangs out where people talk about it. There is a lot of information on infosec - a lot of garbage, but also great resources from trustworthy sources, like e.g. the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Maybe start with their Surveillance Self Defense guide?
You could also check out interviews with Edward Snowden (VICE, JRE, ...), or browse e.g. media ccc de for more general, beginner-friendly talks on something that sounds interesting to you - some of them get quite technical (fewer than at other hacker conferences though), which is not what you want to start with, but it's also not necessary to get a good understanding of how & why to take the basic steps of protecting yourself.

I have just checked out New Pipe, and it's sorta meh. I have used TH-cam Vanced for some time now and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have full TH-cam experience with log-in function, AMOLED mode, popup mode and player mode. Only cool thing about New Pipe is the ability to download videos.
