- This is video 12 of a multi video series of a 1977 Starcraft boat restoration. We bought this boat right before winter and have only used it 2 times. This is the steps we use to install the new fuel tank foam and replace the old floor with new marine grade plywood and carpet.
Thank you so much! I just inherited one that needs a complete do over. These videos will really make it a smooth transition! Thanks!!
You are most welcome. I am happy to hear you are enjoying them. I hope they will help you out along the way with your rebuild. Boats are a great project and can be very fun to rebuild. After all the hard work of rebuilding it you get many years of great fun. Thank you!!! Enjoy and have fun on your rebuild!!!
The original floor covering was a light blue on piece plastic. No absorption, water proof, easy to keep clean.
The marine grade carpet cleans very easy and does not absorb water.
What size plywood did you use? Great videos man, I’m redoing my 72 18ss right now.
I believe it was 1/2 inch marine grade plywood.
Thank you! That is awesome, it is fun to bring them back to life?
Thank you for watching our videos.
Hello
I really enjoyed the videos on your starcraft boat. I was really intrigued about the fuel tank under the floor, would you have any information on the tank, manufacturer, gallons, measurements? Also the plastic protective pieces that keep tank from touch anything.
I am starting a restoration on a 18 ft starcraft mariner and that underfloor fuel tank would be great.
Thank you.
Gary
Hello ,
Thank you, I am happy to hear you are enjoying them. I will attach a link that will take you right to the fuel tank I purchased. It has all of the correct measurements of the tank. It is a 28 gallon tank and comes with all of the hardware needed already on the tank. You just need hoses to get it hooked up. It fit right in between the rails with no problem. The strips of plastic I used around and under the take was a 1/8 or 3/8 Teflon material that I have had for years and don’t remember where I picked it up but I would think you could get something similar at home depo or a Lowe’s or probably any good hardware store. I bought it for runners on a sled I was building years ago. Any good thicker plastic strip would work good. That sounds like a great time to me. The tank is great and make more room for storage in the back of the boat for sure.
Please let me know if the link works for you. It is sold by autoplicity.com
Thank you for watching my videos.

Hello Sir
Thank you for all the help and information!
Gary
You are most welcome, glad to help if I can.
Thank you,
Jesse
So I have a question couple questions. What size fuel tank did you go with and was that marine plywood or just regular plywood and what’s the Styrofoam for? I’m redoing my 1972 StarCraft 18 foot and he’s trying to see what everybody is doing and I see a lot of people putting the Styrofoam boards in there and I didn’t know what it was for, I’ve always had a John boat window floor so when I bought the season I see what everybody does that’why I just wanted to ask
I went with a 28 gallon under deck poly fuel tank from autoplicity, I linked the one I got below.
I did go with the marine plywood to hopefully get more years out of it. It is a good bit higher on price.
The styrofoam is ment to help deaden some of the sound from waves and helps add a little more floatation. Some places (states/counties/countries) have requirement on how much foam has to be in the boat. The coast guard has some regulations in some places as well.
Hope this helps and thank you for checking out the videos.

I have a new Suzuki 30hp going on my 16 v SS. I'm using a 5 gallon tank which came with the motor. This thing will get 8-10 mpg. and run at 25 mph.
Nice!
Where can you get Manuals for Starcraft? Gotta 1974 16 American OB. Recommendation on where to get parts?
I attached a link I found on google. I would think there would be a PDF style manual somewhere on the internet as well for the manual. I don’t have a manual for my boat, I actually redid all of the original wiring on mine. I ordered some parts from a few places. I will attach some links to the ones I used. I was able to find a few things I needed on Amazon as well. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

Hi there. What did you use for floatation foam?
Hey, I used some expanded POLYSTYRENE foam styrofoam that I had on hand mostly to save some money. There is a lot of options that you can use. There is a few expandafoam like stuff that you mix and dump in the floor but I didn’t like the thought of having to cut foam out if I ever need to redo anything on the boat. You can use blue board from home depo or something in that style also.
I attached a link that is similar to what I used. I think my blocks are bigger than the one in the link but same style.
Hope this helps.

@@jessecolsonoutdoors thanks!
You’re welcome.
I just bought a 1977 Starcraft Nordic 18' for $500. I am going to fix it up. How many feet is your project?
They are sweet boats for sure and that is a good deal for one. They make some fun projects fixing them up. She is an 18 foot holiday with the front cut out to a platform.
Have you ever used bondo on a boat? If so did it hold up?
I haven’t. The West System G-Flex epoxy I used has a filler that you can use for small cracks and indents but I’m not sure how it would work over a large area.
Almost anything you can spill on carpet...from gas to food to fish guts, is going to be a real problem.
It is actually marine grade carpet, everything cleans off of it very easy. Water runs right off and it drys very fast. Best boat carpet I have ever used.
Where did you get the tar from? Is the tar...coal tar epoxy?
I got it from the hardware store in the next town over from where I live. It is a roof coating tar ment to water proof and seal any cracks you put it on. It soaks in to the cracks and fills the underside some as well. It is a petroleum based tar but once dry it 100% safe.
