When Michael says he needs to be friends before dating: He has mastered the art of the friendzone.
I'm not going to be watching for that long, but you can do both at the same time. Like, your intentions are clear from the start that you are somewhat interested in them (this is how you avoid being in their friend-category), and then you escalate over time, whilst your intentions are always clear that you are interested in escalating / moving in the direction of being in a relationship (with time, if things are working out). Then there's a really strong foundation to build the relationship on top of, because it's not something you have just rushed into. There's a real connection there that goes deeper than this just being a person you feel lust towards.
Pretty much every girlfriend I have had, has been like that. A decent amount of hanging out and getting to know them, and then getting into a relationship. Which I suppose could be seen as "dating"... but it was more, "hanging out". Because the intentions weren't like, THAT direct. Which makes it more chill and easy, because there aren't as many expectations and things going on. Ya just hanging out and getting to know each other, and maybe it will go somewhere.
I've been with my current girlfriend for 9 years, so that was before all the online dating shit exploded and became the norm for almost everyone. Doesn't seem like my cup of tea (we did meet online though! just not a dating website).

He got to where he is through hardwork yes, but in his apt description of being able to understand things without any base understanding? That's called *talent*, he may by no means be a prodigy but he's talented in his craft which is what allows him to deviate so heavily and do his own thing. He worked hard but some people just have a natural affinity to certain things, mine is art. His is computer coding, sourcing and constructing highly sophisticated things to work together. Everyone has their niche, some are stonger than other's but natural talent always plays a role in what someone does and pursues in life. Even if they aren't aware of it, or even want to admit it.
