Great knife and period also. I long for your cabin in the woods. More difficult life, but you appreciate everything more. Fed up with the world being too fast. Guess I'll have to start clearing a spot in the trees. Thanks for all your videos..............Ross

Very nice homemade crooked knife Billy, love the history you gave with it as well, I just bought a new one a few months ago....a peace of braided leather would look nice.....

I made one with a deer antler handle many, many years ago. I gave it to my nephew on his 18th birthday.

love the crooked knife. the most useful tool for the woods, in my opinion. but I tend to hurt myself with it than my belt knife.

Super! Tu me donnes le goût d'essayer de m'en fabriquer un moi-même. Je me souviens que Paul Provencher en parlait dans "Vivre en Forêt".

Wow, you don't stop to impress me. Beautiful knife. Nice work on The blade. For the handle, I think traditionally they wrap the blade insert with moose nerves or "babiche". Show us the final result

Hiya Billy! When I was a kid, all the old fellas carrying crooked knives had twine wrapped around the top for inch or two... but those were of wood, so I assume they served a functional purpose. Either way, they look classic.

Yep, Dave Canterbury @ the pathfinder school just did a video on the crook-knife too. He is one of my hero's.
I made a knife/sheath a couple years ago with a piece of stainless (that broke off my truck, and a old leather boot). Your knife is much nicer than mine.

Pour la finition ma suggestion: un fil de laiton genre collet à lièvre sur 1 cm de large, pour entourer la base bien serré et collé.

I saw an old one with about 2 inches of steel wire. I think that was to strengthen the tang mostly.

Great work on the Crooked Knife Billy...cool studio too.
How about making a ferrule out of a piece of copper plumbing pipe? Pinned on with small copper tacks? Maybe a scolloped/frilled edge or some simple engraving? Of course nothing to effect the comfortable use of this hugely useful tool ;)
Thanks & warm wishes from the UK :)

hmm the reason you see most traditional Mocotaugan with a wrap is because the blades were not imbedded into the handle but on the outside of the handle fitted into a grooved slot and the wrap was lashing the blade to the handle.. I have researched these knives quite extensively.. I would wrap with sinew...

Pour garder le look authentique, pourquoi pas un enroulement de babiche autour de la pièce de cuir?
Funny and instructive video as usual!

Awesome Looking Mocotagen my friend......... I myself would got with the brass ring (as already mentioned), or actually might go with a nice wide, maybe 1/2- 3/4 of an inch wide Copper ring, I think the copper would give it some real character.

I like the leather end. It will protect the material you are working with. Maybe boil the leather and polish it so it's not as soft.

Loved it! I have been thinking about getting one of these recently. I just watched a Ray Mears episode the other day where he was making a birch bark canoe with a crooked knife and it inspired me to look into getting one. I love that you made your own ! I built a small forge about a year ago, perhaps I should fire it up and try to make one myself. Oh and I love the new studio as well :D Thanks for sharing man! -Lochlainn
