- Sous nos yeux, César Newashish, un Amérindien de la nation Attikamek de la réserve Manouane, au Québec, construit son canot. Tôt le printemps, ou par temps doux l'hiver, il pénètre dans le bois, choisit son bouleau et, en un tour de main, il en enlève l'écorce qu'il coud de racines d'épinette. De bois de cèdre, il fabrique les bouts de l'embarcation, prépare serres et traverses, «membrage» et lattage, pose des plats-bords et soumet le canot au gommage. Ces opérations qui peuvent être suivies à l'écran montrent l'adresse de l'artisan et le souci de perfection qu'il apporte à son travail. Film sans paroles.

Cesar remains me of my Grandfather. Hardworking family man. When all us bad kids running around him. Not caring how much trouble we would get into. He would teach us valuable lessons. To watch a true master was a privilege. To film him in action back in 1971 put on TH-cam for all to watch is special. Thanks for sharing this video with us.

I remember making a birch canoe in a class at Old Fort William Rendezvous in Thunder Bay Ontario about 30 years ago. We made it smaller and did a few things differently, but essentially the same process. I still have the birch bark basket I made during the same class in my bedroom. This documentary brought back many fond paddling memories from the Quetico Provincial Park.
There is nothing like paddling a birch bark canoe and I am glad that I had to do it a few times over the years.
I currently have an antique hand made Huron wood and canvass canoe made in the same area as shown in the film, which gives almost the the same feeling on the water.

I love the child and dog playing, with dog climbing up the ladder. No narrative, just natural sounds. A lot of work went into this natural canoe, this master craftsman made it look so easy. A true artist. This workman is truly worthy of his wage.

It was an honour to watch this. Takes me back to when i was a Kid and i used to watch my Koro/ Grandad hollow out logs to make Waka/ Maori Canoe in Aotearoa/NZ. Though our ancestors were from different lands and had different ways in life, the love of the Sky, Trees, Land and Water was the same. I wish we had Birch trees. Wonderful Vid!

Fantastique ; Quel savoir faire ! Que d'intelligence dans ce bateau ; un savoir faire ancestral des indiens d'Amérique du nord ! Un bateau très léger 100/100 naturel qui dit mieux, recyclable, pas de polyester , pas un clou , pas une ficelle ! Mon Dieu que c'est beau .Et quand on y pense fait en un temps record avec les moyens du bord !
He did use temporary metal nails here and there… and metal tools!
I’d love to see someone build a canoe like this with pure stone and bone tools (and no metal pot). I have no doubt it can be done but I’d like to see how much harder it is and how the building methods change to accommodate the different tools.

Many thanks to the NFB for producing another excellent work of art. Bought my own copy on tape many years ago. Love the sounds track, bugs and all. Reminds me of canoe tripping. Cesar is a national treasure.

This is a master piece. I remember watching this film years ago, and nothing out there compares on how to make one of these magnificent craft. He made the whole process look easy !!
Le travail de César est vraiment étonnant ! C’est un bonheur de pouvoir admirer les techniques qu’il emploie : peu d’outils, des matériaux locaux. Tout parait simple mais nécessite une très grande expérience. Il est vraiment heureux que ce travail ait pu être filmé pour les générations futures.

This put me to mind of when I was a teenager. My father and I argued...a lot and we decided to make a boat together.
Dad was a master builder, just not boats.
We tried to make a drift boat for fishing.
We used plywood too thick and didn't make it deep enough.
We worked on it together.
It floated well enough, but weighed about 300 lbs !
The oars would hit your knees when you rowed.
Dad ended up selling it, but I will always remember working with him on that boat and each learning to respect the other a bit more.
I'm much older now and have a nephew who has problems in school.
I think we'll build a boat.

The knowledge this craftsman used to create his canoe must have been gathered and taught over many generations.
I have watched this film several times over the years. I find it therapeutic. To watch this master craftsman calmly and methodically knock together and create an object of true beauty and incredible practicality always causes me to slow down and focus on what is important when negative stressors build up.

À la fin il utilise de la graisse animale avec de la gomme d'épinette pour sceller.

Une communion secrète, intime avec la nature dont les mots sont inutiles, elle se vit en symbiose sans maudire l'un et l'autre.
L'arbre ne doit rien, mais l'artisan lui doit tout.

What a treasure to our and future generations that this film was made. More traditional indigenous knowledge from around the world should be preserved in this way. Even "our" traditional knowledge and skill should be preserved too from making wool to making shoes to making soap. C'est incroyable de voir cet homme construire un canoe sans pieces en metal, aucun clou, ni de vis et avec un hache, un couteau. Le plus impressionant c'est qu'il n'avait pas d'instructions, pas de livre, aucun manuel. Merci ONF.

The knowledge lost with this old mans passing. So much of the old ways are gone most likely never to return. Sad. This is a great video in my opinion. I wished I was there learning. Thank you for your time and effort putting this video out so all could see.

Most beautiful handmade conoe I've ever seen. With an axe and couple of
knives,no nail or metal parts.I like the way he made the glue, from tree sap and
animal fat.

Bravo César.....je reste silencieux!!!!...... j'ai déjà vu.... mon défunt père dans les années de guerre allait dans la forêt coupait un bouleau à écorce noire et trois heures après te faisait essayer tes sabots... tout fait main, finition et confort parfaits.....car ajustés aux pieds.......j'ai vécu dans les forêts d'Afrique avec les Pygmées... même chose... donc aujourd'hui je constate que je ne sais pas faire grand chose, finalement.. au revoir..

Faire naître un canoë avec les éléments de la forêt dont il dispose, c'est tout à fait irréalisable pour le commun des mortels. Nous avons complètement oublié ces savoirs.

It's always a pleasure to watch a master craftsman at work. I was REALLY impressed when he steam bent the frames with his KNEE. That's hardcore, that is. I also had to laugh when I saw the kids sword fighting with wooden swords. Clearly they'd gone to see "The Three Musketeers" and/or "The Four Musketeers" which came out in that time. I'm sure because my brother and I were about the same ages then and we roped every kid into the neighborhood into doing exactly the same thing. My dad was re-modelling our 80 year old house at the time, so we used old lathe for swords. We didn't bother with niceties such as sanding, just knocked the bigger chunks of plaster off. I think I still have a few splinters left over from some of our duels.
