  • Hey everyone!
The 2023 Padres were considered by many to be World Series contenders. However, not only did they miss the playoffs, the team's big 4 dissolved in unceremonious fashion. So, what happened?

As a Dodger fan, I can see how frustrating this can be for the Padres fanbase. You're being critical of your team because you want to see them win. Even if it means taking notes on how other teams do it, you just simply want to see your beloved San Diego Padres win it all.

That intro is a case study in situational hitting. If you're Juan Soto, you have the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on base, against a top 5 closer in baseball, and you know that a rookie and a glove first OF are coming behind you... you cannot take a walk there. Sure that may give you a *slightly* better chance to tie but your best chance to win in that spot is with you at the dish.

This video was done very well because the long & short of it is, the difference between the 2022 & the 2023 seasons was in 22 we didn't hand out huge contracts that we didn't need to do & all the payers that got money didn't preform at all!
    RIP PETER!

I know I wrote the same thing on your previous video, but…you’re *really* good at this.
The way you keep varying pace, tone, static vs. dynamic images, recurring use of structuring elements like the ‘big four in jeans & jerseys’ picture, it’s all just excellent. Somebody needs to hire you to do this on a bigger stage.

20:21 I was at that bat flip game, and I traveled from New England. Tatis hit two more runs in after Ha-Seong Kim singled two guys in to take the lead to pretty much seal the game. Yet Tatis got all the hype and attention for his padding of the score with his bat flip. All style no subtance, that is the title of the Padres in 2023. This is what my boomer Dad feared when SportCenter started in the 90's

Not quite at the same scale, but they also went all in on 2015. Trading for Prime Kimbrel, trading for a Just-Past-Prime Kemp, Trading for Potential-Superstar Justin Upton and signing Then-Elite James Shields all in the same offseason. Padres have shown they're willing to spend in the past in terms of money and prospect capital, but they've yet to see it pay off in any way

A few things that hold the Pads back other than timing and inconsistency:
They are trash at developing major leaguers. The last Padre draftee to make an All-Star team with the Padres was Jake Peavy, who was not drafted this century.
They have a pitchers park and tried to build an offensive juggernaut. Poor teams build pitchers parks because pitching is cheaper than offense. If you want to have pitchers park, you need guys who are going to hit .270.
Their depth starters were shit. Cronenworth, Grisham, and the black hole at DH all heavily underperformed with the bat.

The part that sucks the most about that is that it's not like that's a trainable skill. That's not any mystical clutch stat or ability. That's just a bad luck streak up on a bad luck streak. And that makes you feel powerless to do anything about it

After Tony Gwynn's, Peter Seidler's passing is the most painful to the Padres organization. Seidler gave us Padres fans a hope not seen since Ray Kroc, it was so refreshing to see a team owner that really cared about winning more than the bottom line, we felt as close to that championship as we ever were, and his passing brought many of us a sense of uncertainty about the team's direction.
Thank you, Peter Seidler, and rest well! I'm sorry you couldn't see your efforts get rewarded.

If I was a Padres fan, I would be absolutely pissed off at AJ preller and the front office. Sometimes it seems the FO doesn't know exactly what it's doing and just acts irrationally. The fact that they didn't sell during the 2023 trade deadline is gonna hurt them a lot coming the next few years. The padres could've got prospects for Wacha, Lugo, Hader, and Snell but Preller ignorantly chose to not sell. Now all those FA's are going to walk for pretty much nothing but comp picks. I understand not selling when ur a bit below .500 but seriously looking back that was a terrible mistake not too. Imagine the haul of prospects they could've got trading away all those guys.

    • @Wolf-wc1js
      @Wolf-wc1js 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Not the first time they tried something and it backfired.
Jeff Gyorko led SD in RBI’s in 2014…with 51. So obviously they needed offense to go with SD’s 2nd overall in the NL 3.27 ERA.
Oops. They went from 77-85 to 74-88 despite going from 15th to 10th in RBI’s (by adding Kemp, Upton etc.) thanks to the pitching going from 2nd to 10th in ERA.
Forgot about that aspect, did you? Kemp/Upton only lasted one full season, and 2016 saw SD drop even further. They added $18 million in 2015 dollars just to lose more often.
