    Congrats with your tawny owl :D! it's very good that you have it at such a young age! now the thing is about a tawny owl that they are very stubborn and hard to train! but you can do it if you start early like you're doing right now :)! now the reason why he isn't intrested in the glove/food is because he isn't hungry you know... but you should wait untill he's 3 months old (when he's fully grown) and lower his weight a bit so that he's intrested in the food/glove :)

    Thanks for sharing! Very informative. May I suggest changing your font color either to white or yellow because black is hard too see most of the times.

    Diogo Moutinho: it is noirmal when an owl grabs or bites in your fingers when he's hungry! mine do it to. when you're training it you should let him eat from the glove... then he will do it less then normal but still do it:-)
    about the training part. when he's 3 months you can put his anklets and jesses on but do not put him on a perch or put him on the glove with a leash that's a little to soon, his legs could still break at this young age.
    what you can do is if he's already in his aviary (and i hope he is becuase he will be flying around soon or already is xD) you can let him step up on the glove and let him sit on it. or mayby eat/fly to the glove but do not tie him yet with a leasg just in case for damaging the legs. when he's 4 months you can put him on a perch with a leash.

    Hi Johan!
    It's me - again :p
    I have a friend whom handraised a great grey owl from .. day 7 or day 10 I think it was.. he started clicker training by then - click, give food. So it would connect the click to "food!" - he has learned it the commands "come here" (like you have), "up" and "go to perch" - and it is only 5 months old by now :)
    Where do you can a falconry glove? I can't seem to find them in Denmark ..

  • @viirruuss
    @viirruuss  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    colin, yes it is possible but it is a LOT HARDER then when you get them when there really young (i mean 2 - 3 weeks old) and when they are 3 months they are ready to be trained :)! if you really cant wait and buy an older one, then you're gonna have a hard time training them + you are going to drop his weight a lot lower then an full imprint on yourself owl

    Hi. Great video. Beautiful bird. I have a barn owl called barney. Almost exactly the same as yours (female i think). You give great information. Mine is weighing at 318 grammes full weight and around 285 grammes flying weight. At the minute i am not flying him to the glove. He is 10 weeks old, he seems reluctant to fly outside but he has just eaten a full chick (in pieces) from my 8 year old daughter on the glove which is a good start because for weeks he hasnt liked the glove but we went for a walk in the countryside today (that was his first time outside) so he is ok on the glove now. He flies inside the house but he only jumps and flaps his wings and flies small amounts. My next task is to get him to jump from the perch to the glove and then start to increase the distance but he doesnt seem to get too hungry. I will persevere but this whole owl training requires a lot of patience (which i have).
    Is 10 weeks old and only just outside sound like a good age to start training him or am i trying too early? Please help as this is my first bird. Thank you.

    Would a barn owl fly away if you did not keep it locked up? I mean if you raise it from egg or chick, give it lots of attention, feed it; but keep it in a place it can freely fly out of at its own will... would it keep returning or eventually move out?

    Hey, just a few questions I'm wanting to buy one and I need to know the basics I know about they fly better at certain weights, but I'm unsure of when to fly and what time to fly them and about housing them like if I put one in an enclosure will I need like a nest box for them to go in, cause I'm thinking of putting in my shed but it's not a tiny shed its a decent size so it's not going to be cramped and how many times a week I fly it and for how long! Thanks in advance:)

    Hiya, I`m getting a barn from a local breeders and I wish to free-fly him, I was wondering how many hours a day do you spend with your owl? I have been told to spend around 4 hours a day with it. And what did you go for when choosing one?

    De eerste 8 weken eet een kerkuilkuiken normaal tussen de 1 en 4 kuikentjes maar vanaf die ouder is dan 8 weken dus gaat dat veel verminderen en zal die er gemiddeld nog 2-3 eten! die van mij eet er nu nog maar amper 2 nu die volwassen is :) ik hoop dat dit antwoord je geholpen heeft? :-) kga trouwens verder doen met mijn video's vanaf mijn kerkuil gedaan is met muiten (verenkleed te verwisselen) want die is nu nog volop bezig :)

    Can you use your barn owl for hunting like other falconer do with their hawk/falcons???

    • @viirruuss
      @viirruuss  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, you cant do any hunting with a barn owl, it's just for flying! If you want to use an owl for hunting you must take one of the bigger eagle owls! but it's rather difficult becuase owl's aren't that focused birds overall

    • @markkimberley3083
      @markkimberley3083 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can hunt with your barn owl but it will get feed up a d stop hunting so unlike the hawk it will only kill one or two times and that's it

    • @viirruuss
      @viirruuss  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      he's just focusing, to see things better. To concentrate if you know what i mean.
      Barn owl's can't see good at a close range.

  • @viirruuss
    @viirruuss  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes your friend is very smart indeed :p that's why they call it an imprint :p because you are imprinting it xD. now for the glove, i buy most of my falconry stuff on falconryfairs/meetings where i can see the materials and i can fit the glove in my hand so i know it's a good size for me. Now if you really cant find anything i know you can also buy falconry stuff on ebay :)

      it's not something that easy, i bought mine at a local breeder. if you really want an owl, you should look for a breeder in your neighborhood.
      In that way you can also see in wat kind of aviary's the parents are.
      Also August is to late, you should buy him when he or she is like 3/4 weeks old. So that should be like april/may :-)
