Sling shot and roll cast are your best friends in creeks. Keeps the back casting and annoyance at a minimum.

Try aiming 5ft above the water, like you're playing catch. That may help with the water slap. There isn't always room, obviously. And your tippet is a bit heavy. Keep it up, it's the little things you'll learn that make fly fishing much more enjoyable. Fun video!

I started fly fishing for smallmouth earlier this spring, and I love it! In those clear creeks, it's sometimes harder to stay stealthy than with my normal spinning gear, but I'm sure as I get more experience with the fly, it'll be easier. I'm glad to see you're enjoying it!

Started fly fishing for bass for almost a year now. Mainly from my kayak. Definitely more challenging with casting, hitting trees above me, fly line getting caught on random things in the kayak, finding good lures, dealing with windy conditions, but man when you do catch one it's definitely more fun and rewarding than just throwing on a senko.

I'm with you John! It can be frustrating, especially in creeks with lots of overhang. But... when you find active bass and using a lure that you can strip down through there, it can be a blast!

My fourth or fifth fly rod was a two weight. First one anybody had ever seen in my neck of the woods. First day out I caught two 14" bass with it in a pond. I went to another lake and got into a big nest of red ears, and they were harder to get in than the two bass. In anykind of wind; you can forget the two weight. But a five or six will catch most anything bass wise

Love your videos. Try not to let the fly touch the water on your false cast forward. It tends to spook the fish. Once you have enough line extended, just drop the rod tip and line in one motion. Great to see your channel doing so well.

Once you get the roll casting down pat you will love the fly rod even more. When the early leaves are falling a fly rod is incredibly deadly on small creeks especially using poppers and wolly buggers.

Admittedly, fly fishing is tight quarters like creeks with overhanging limbs is a challenge. In such an area, a shorter, lighter rod is more practical. Perhaps, an eight foot 3-5 weight rod would be easier to handle and provide more action on the catches. Be patient! Over time, you will become more skilled and learn to love this manner of fishing. Meanwhile, what can I say....you caught fish on a fly rod under tough circumstances. That is a win!

I watched guys using a fly rod catching one fish right after another years ago. I knew I had to try this out, but had nobody to teach me. I now own about twenty rods, and it's a life style I won't give up. I still do the other styles, but if I had only one it would be the fly rod. You have had no fun to you land a 20" bass on a fly rod! Common carp are even more fun

🙋🏻Hey John, I wish you could explain the way you tell how what species the fish is that you catch and hold up to the camera. So we could also learn how to tell the difference between a Coosa or Redeye Bass, as compared to how you know which species your fish are when you catch a Largemouth, Smallmouth or Spotted Bass. The different physicalities of the fish, which makes it a member of that specific Bass species that you catch and hold up to the camera. It would really help us beginners learn what to look for, how to tell what we've caught when we catch one, so that we could also say, "hey, I caught a Largemouth, a Smallmouth and a Coosa Bass."

    Hey John
When you are false casting you shouldn’t go past 10 oclock on the back cast and not past 2 oclock on the forward cast, that will keep you from slapping the water every false cast.
When you decide to let the line go for the cast, then you can point the rod toward your spot

Great job with the fly rods ... can be frustrating at times ... you where right ... your 5 wgt would be good for the second creek you fished ... especially throwing that small crayfish imitation ... like anything in life, the more you practice the easier fly fishing becomes !

If you'll take your fly rod to those smallmouth bass streams you fish in middle Tennessee you will catch some bigger fish.
A three or four pound smallmouth on a fly rod is a handful.
    Be careful, it's addictive
I've been flyfishing for bass for a long, long time.

You want at least a fill rod length of fly line outside the tip of the rod. The fly line is what to cast, the leader and fly just go along for the ride. It is a lazy man's sport, you have to load the momentum into the line. Accelerating to start the cast loads the momentum to the rod and the fly line. You add Momentum on both the backcast and the forward delivery. Mad River Outfitters, Have several youtube videos on casting, Orvis Has a ton of education. Stay Blessed and Fish on.

that root beer colored fly looks closer to a Wooley Booger, but still closer to a nymph. The booger imitates a leech. With your eight weight rod, a Clauser minnow might have been better in the wind. The Wooley Booger is the bug I start off with everytime. I've caught bass up to 14" on a two weight if you know how to manage your line. Normally I'll be using a five or six weight unless the fish are big. My big fish rod is a Loomis Short Stick in 7-8 weight with ten weight line on it. It'll seriously bust the wind. Yet the short stick has a hard time pushing large streamers (4"+). I recommend crushing the barbs!! The hook set is much better, and just keep your rod angle high (45 degrees or more). To be exact; I don't use a barb on any hook for fresh water fishing. One last thing I noticed. You're false casting way too much. Try to keep it under two casts, and away to the side of the intended target. Then swing onto the target. In those small streams you need to learn to roll cast, and a side arm cast (keeps you outta the wind). You never said what weight leader you are using. I use a 8.8lb or a 6 lb. nine foot leader most of the time, but will often use a 7.5 foot leader. Leaders are the key to good casting.

I used to see guys fly fishing on the James River but I never saw them catching any big smallmouth. Sometimes I'd fish right behind them and pull out a big one when they didn't get bit. It's about the Journey I guess

Also, stop making back casts on small and tight streams. Too many people try to “river runs through it” when all you have to know is a bow cast or a roll cast. So many parts of the water you tried to fish but gave up on or had negative experience with are not hard to fish with a fly rod if you talked to someone who knows or reached out to someone who does it regularly…
