  • Fat Cyclist Vs Sa Calobra
I'm the first person to admit that I am heavy cyclist and because of this one reason, I have avoided riding up the legendary climb of Sa Calobra on Mallorca.....until now.

Guys, just go there by boat port de soller to sa calobra is approx. 1 hour, no decent and you get to cycle back to port de soller which is a nice trip too.

Climbing beyond 8-9% gets painful real quick, even on lowest gear on my MTB. Below that, it's about finding a suitable rythm, keeping cadence high to relieve strain on knees, varying gears as the steepness naturally varies. At some point, my mind too starts creating ever more compelling reasons to stop. I pushed a bit too hard yesterday, and felt a real longing for the summit and the bite of chocolate and water I was going for.

Super impressive mate. You're an inspiration. Previously competed in strongman and managed to work my way up to 136kg, been on the bike commuting around 11 miles each way a few times a week for the last month and seeing stuff like this makes me want to keep going!

That made me a bit teary, Leonard. The photobomb was quite special and the touch on the shoulder and what sounded like words of encouragement from a stranger were moving. That little extra push always helps. Proud of you. Congratulations.

I also found the riders on Mallorca to be universally friendly and helpful. Short anecdote: After returning from Sa Calobra back to Pollensa, I'd been chasing my son (we had matching club kit) for a few miles but he hooked up with a pair of junior riders and were gunning it. I'd had enough, and as we were nearing home I sat up and let them go off. Next thing, I felt a hand on my back and a Spanish rider pushed me back onto the group before departing with a cheery wave. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was turning off half a mile further up, but I still very much appreciated the gesture. Likewise, on every tough climb we did, riders that passed me (sad to say, there were more than a few!) all gave a friendly hello and often a few words of encouragement as they went by. It cannot be understated how much this helps to revive flagging legs, especially on some of the longer climbs, and I never stopping being enchanted by it.
      Can't wait to return!

You mate are an inspiration. The things you achieve just by going out and riding your bike. None of this 'you've got to have the latest kit/gear' or a 10k bike. Just with good old enjoyment the achievements will come.
You've certainly inspired me to get back on the bike after a long lay off & sign up for an event ride. Not to win or get a fast time (it's a charity ride) but to just get out there, enjoy it & have the sense of achievement that comes with just doing it.
Thanks mate & no doubt I'm not the only person you've inspired with your channel 🖤

I hope to get to Majorca from south France this autumn for a first cycling visit. And thinking of the exhilaration ahead when it is all over.

Well done mate! Not only this is like a dream come true, but also it is like fighting with your own weaknesses. I hate climbs of any sort. A major problem with me climbing is when the climb is pretty long, I have problems with my lower back. On a 9-10km climb I've once had, half way through I had to stop for a short brake, and then I've felt terrible pain. Well it has gone away a bit later when I've moved around with my body and stretched out too. For me there is only one reason to do such a climb, to see the wonderful view from the top :)
    All the best for you!

    • @jollygoodvelo

For me it's extremly mentally challenging when I see a bunch of fast light riders taking me over. If you can ignore that mentally, listen to your HR and come with proper gearing, it's achievable. It's a mental thing not to go faster than your own pace. There is no point in trying to be as fast as some 20yo amateur or semi-pro riders with 59kg of weight. And you can make stops. Just don't hurry.

Chapeaux Leonard, you have slain the dragon. I know a bit of how you feel having just come back from Girona and ridden Rocacorba. The ride from Girona was a 57.75 mile loop out to Banyolls and back with 5100ft of climbing and a moving time of 5hrs 18 minutes. The actual Rocacorba climb itself is 6.17 miles with 2410ft of climbing and took 1hr 33 minutes. Your climb looked a lot more scenic as Rocacorba is wooded so basically all you see is the road going up in front of you and trees…..

Only just caught up with this video. Inspiring stuff Leonard. I hope to get up Sa Calobra when I'm in Mallorca next month.

Interesting. Where I live in Japan (Ishikawa) we have many mountain climbs and this is comparable to one of my recent rides (Iozen Mountain) I think which is feared in the local area.

I’d be interested to know what gear ratios / cogs you used for the climb?

Never done Sa Calobra...but one day I will :)
Thank you for sharing your adventures, positives and less positives...aka life :D
Finding your enjoyment with it is all what it is about!
And regarding time spent ascending Sa Calobra, or any hill for that matter - those who need 1hr getting there have put out a greater effort and achievement than those who do it in half that time! OUTSTANDING!! Fair play Leonard :D

    You are an inspiration!
We are going to be in France riding in June (live in the USA).
Nothing like that in the US, but really looking forward to biking in Europe again.
We a doing 3 ride all relative easy.
    Normandy
    Loire Valley Bike & Barge
    Seyssel to Lyon
But we are in our 70s and we really enjoy riding in Europe.
Love watching you ride Leonard. Great videos!

WELL DONE! Such an incredible road. My wife and I stayed in Soller a few years ago. Rode from Soller up Puig Major. Did Sa Calobra and back. Death bed memory.

Don't know if you've covered this before, but what do you eat while riding? During a two hour ride I will eat about 70 grams of Snickers bar and drink about half a litre of water, spread out over 3-4 stops. The Snickers is a bit hard to chew when out of breath, so I'm considering alternatives.
What is your strategy for refueling while riding?
