A follow up video taking all about my training leading up to this. I hope there are some things you can use in your own cycling : ❤How I climbed Sa Calobra in 24 minutes // The Training and Preparation th-cam.com/video/nCIqyZJOEqs/w-d-xo.html
It would really mean a lot if we could make this video the most watched episode on the channel! 57k views to beat from the previous Sa Calobra video! Help me achieve that by sharing, liking, subbing and commenting below. TY :)
Brilliant effort Ed well done!. You should be proud!!. Thousands and thousands of people attempt this climb to be 2nd only behind a classic winning top professional is an incredible achievement!!.
Amazing Ed 🙌 This editing brought a tear to the eye 😢 You have a very humble, inclusive, approach to what you do that makes you a stand out ambassador for the sport 🙌 I reckon Tom would go for it with you together, as a collab, as seems so down to earth; obviously schedules aligning 🤞 Lets go #EdMode 🚀 And hope you both have an amazing vacation 💑
Great effort, congratulations! Now if you get the entire Ineos team give you a leadout up the climb you and Tom can have a true head-to-head comparison.
Bonkers seeing on bike footage. The speed is very impressive. I reckon as said below it would be a laugh to have a bunch of mates give you a massive tow in to see if you could get closer to TP. Be fun to see folk burying themselves with you and good to see if it makes much difference on a climb.
Well played Ed and kudos on getting a PB. Watching this has given me inspiration to try and beat my PB next week albeit 30 mins slower than yourself 🤣🚴👌👍
Great effort! I love climbs, but as a 95 kg rider, you can imagine I'm slow. You're pushing almost double of my speed with same power. I gotta keep training to push more than now :)
Massive well done, fantastic effort!! How could you wait to download until you got back!?!? 😉I look forward to the "Directors Cut Extended Edition". Brilliant cinematography as well, love it.
Haha! Well, next up will be the full effort overlay with a deep dive in to the training leading up to it. Hopefully gain some people a few seconds themselves.
Great effort Ed, chapeau 👏🏻 If someone like you can’t beat Tom Pidcock’s time then unless a top pro goes for it the KOM will stand for a long long time. Anything you think you can do different next time (if there is a next time) to go sub 24:00?
I reckon a few could beat Tom but It would be awesome to see others try :) To go sub 24 I think I just need another 2years of chipping away, or a better weather day, if we are talking about me improving my time solo. At this level it is literally seconds of improvement.
Great video, too bad you didn't answer or even address the question in the title! I was waiting for you to scream up there at 400 W+ to massively explode halfway...
I didn’t need to. The answer is “of course not!”🙈But because of the speed Tom was doing up there the watts required are actually nuclear. We can make an educated guess that I’d last roughly half way (12min at 420w, 7wkg) and just about be still with Tom. But then I’d blow.
2017 efforts looks strange. You improved almost 50 seconds with less power and lower HR within a week? Strong improvement in 5 and 7 years. My PB is 38:01 from 2019. Look forward to your next attempt.
Nice effort! I got a 4iiii power meter recently... Sometimes works perfectly... Sometime disconnects multiple times per minute. Have you had any issues?
I have. Firmware issues and tends to happen if I freewheel for a while. I stop sometimes and just pop the cap off and back on as a reset and away I go with no problems. Happens less and less. They are aware of it and working on it by all accounts👍🏼
quite sure you could make your bike and kit a bit more optimised for the segment, but that'd still be marginal, and probably wouldn't help to gain. Hats off to Tom he did his PB in Dec. Was or wasn't he paced up the hill I guess that's irrelevant to your personal PB. Great effort nevertheless! It's funny when one wants to hit sub-30 on that climb, another person thinks of sub-24. haha!
I've heard all sorts of stories from the locals on the island, but at the end of the day these guys are training to hold on to the best climbers in the world. I'd argue if it was motorpaced/team paced then it's all part of training now to match the likes of Pog/Jonas.
Just echoing what I said above - I've heard all sorts of stories from the locals on the island, but at the end of the day these guys are training to hold on to the best climbers in the world. I'd argue if it was motorpaced/team paced then it's all part of training now to match the likes of Pog/Jonas.
If getting the KOM is that important, why not drive there, warm up on a turbo and hit it totally fresh. Riding for 2.5 hrs before even getting to Sa Colabra must surely put some fatigue into body even if taking it easy.
If I did that I wouldn't hear the end of it haha, everyone knows that riding there and then doing it is the unwritten rule!! The KOM isn't important, what is important is the PB :) Besides, 2.5hr at Z1 is very easy, performing an effort like this for me after a few hours like that is normal.
@@edlaverack Absolutely agree, it wouldn't be the done thing but you know better than most people that this happens all the time with people going for KOMs. Have to say when I rode Sa Colobra last year just getting there nearly wiped me out(!). However I'm a millions miles away from your level. Love the videos btw.
@@edlaverack Good job btw, I would arrived 23mins after you. 🤣 If you are doing Ventoux, make sure you pop by Pista in Bedoin for a coffee and food, JS and Kiki are brilliant there.
Power meter readings from Pidcock and you make zero sense. You did 0.15 w/kg more and gained only a handful of seconds and pidcock did 0.3 more than you and gained a minute and a half?! No way. Either his power meter is way under-reading, your's is way over-reading or Pidcock was motorpaced up the climb. Even with the wind in mind, his time is INSANE for the exact same wattage between you two.
It's highly likely that the power meters read differently. I can only speak for the accuracy of mine over the years and my previous performances. Tom will be maybe 2kg lighter than me but chances are my bike is 0.5kg lighter. The time difference is massive considering the relative efforts, I can't see myself ever going that speed up that climb ever.
@@edlaverack that's the thing. If we start believing that power meters can read so completely wrong then idk man, what are we even using them for? I guess consistency is what really matters not absolute values but still... And Shimano meters have been known to exaggerate, not under-read which I assume is the case for pidcock. But difference is still too massive. I'm forced to assume he was paced
What would you rather see in a video like this? In my opinion we don’t hear enough chat and behind the scenes of things like this. It’s why the videos are quite unpolished.
Second fiddle? The lad won on Alpe D' Huez, has been a world champ on the MTB. He still has time to develop. Everyone is comparing people to Pog which is ridiculous because there are still some incredibly talented guys out there. Winds me up to be honest.......

Well done! Epic and really inspiring as usual. And that intro 👌
FANTASTIC! Bravo Ed 🤩. Thanks for the show, insight to the numbers and really great overlay to the effort.
Chapeau Ed. Fantastic effort and a great video.

6.5 w/kg. Gulp. I have no words. I can't even imagine how that's possible. 😮

Cracking PB up there. Respect 👏👏

Well done bud you need to be proud happy for you cause you could beat your previous pb . 😊
Congratulations Ed, fantastic effort, rode it March 40 mins so 16 min quicker ! Wow! Superb graphics! All best next target 🎉👌🚴
16min!! EPIC!!
Phenomenal effort & congrats on the PB, can't wait for the Ventoux vids, it's a different beast from Sa Calobra!
Great effort Ed, well done
Congratulations on this awesome effort.
Nice one Ed, fantastic PR 🎉
Mind blowing W/kg
Awesome performance mate 🙌🏽 congrats
Amazing effort 💪💪. If I could get down to your 61kg, I might beat my pr of 44 mins... 😂
Back for vengeance!
My wife and her friends are cycling up it this weekend. I'll send it on for inspiration!
Haha! Love to hear it! Hope they enjoy it!
Brilliant Ed
extremely impressive, 6.4 is incredible
Congrats!
Brilliant ride Ed 👏
You need the same (or maybe even better?) team full scale lead-out as Tom had - then it will be interesting. You kind of deserve your KOM back 😁

I don’t know if it’s been said but what about using a drone that follows you.
How many years did you try for such a number (ftp)?
Bonkers
Jonas could drop another minute on that KOM
That would be awesome to see tbf. It’s class to see the World Class riders go at their speeds, even though they have bigger fish to fry
Do we know if tom's effort was motorpaced? He has a history of doing these things :P Re Coll de rates

Go full lead out and moto draft just to see the difference!
Tom must of had some assistance.
I'll try that one day for the laughs!
How much calories must one be on per day to be 61kg & pushing 384w ?
For 24min it's not a massive energy requirement. But if I was in a race and having to do that effort I would obviously need a lot more!!
Did Tom do his effort solo or was he paced by INEOS
He was paced by a scooter.
1600 VAM is craaaazy
I heard that Tom's effort had a team lead out? Does anybody know if that is true? Wouldn't that be a flagged ride?

He was riding behind a scooter. 100% confirmed by the numbers.
How long did he manage to ride at Tom pidcock? 😂
