  • Pruning camelias is not complicated and is very simple. You just need the right tools and a couple of simple tips. During this video, Steve demonstrates one method of pruning camelias. (apologies for the sound quality).

    Camellias are the Queen of flowering shrubs in your garden. I have been the 'Director of Apical Meristematic Tissue' for large public gardens, on expansive private estates and successful wholesale nurserys since about 1980. Have never, for 1 minute, considered using any type of hedging tool (hand, electric or gas) on any Camellia in my charge. Save them for Ligustrum, Buxus and the like where slashed and tattered leaves don't matter!

    Great info! I enjoy my beautiful trees. I have an Anna’s Hummingbird that nests in one of them. She’s been nesting in the same spot for more than 4 years. She fancies camellias too!

    Awesome! Now, could you use those clippings you just cut off (the non diseased ones) for tea or is there a different process for pruning for tea?

      @iCultivate1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had never considered using ornamental Camelias for making tea, but I found this article that might be helpful for you: theteagardener.com/2017/06/camellia-sinensis-making-tea
      Happy gardening

    Thank you for sharing your tips. I have one Japonica Camellia which is very productive, bloom all year around. I read that we should prune Camellia after blooming season to prepare for next blooming. However, my camellia tree always has a lot of buds waiting to bloom. I am not sure when to prune it in order to keep it healthy without cutting off the flower buds and new sprouts? Do you have any suggestion for me?

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one very similar. If it seems to be flowering most of the year, it probably reduces towards the end of spring or the beginning of summer. This time would be a good time to prune.
      I hope this helps :)

      Hi Fahim, thank you for your question.
      Moving and transplanting camellias is always risky. It will depend on ensuring that you can get enough of the roots and minimise the disturbance to them.
      So, give them a good heavy prune, and dig a good amount of the soil around the roots to minimise their disturbance and you will give them the best chance - buy unfortunately, there will still be some risk.
      Hope this helps, and good luck.

    Are you pruning a Japonica or a Sasanqua? They have different types of Growth.

    I hate to say it but I have been in landscape management for 40 years and I would use your pruning techniques as 'how not to prune Camellias'. You can keep them within size range needed without ever, I mean ever, using hedge trimmers. In fact, when I am asked to teach a group of volunteers about pruning my teachers and myself forbid even bringing hedge trimmers on the premises. They should never look rounded off. Hand pruners or small loppers are just about all that should ever be used.

      Hi Cindy, thanks for contributing to the conversation. I understand that there are often opposing views on these types of things, but I must say that I have been pruning my camellias, and others for a similar length of time and the outcome has always been excellent.
      But I do appreciate your comments - if it promotes gardening, it is a good thing.

      @@iCultivate1 I have a few photos of 30+ year old Camellias demonstrating the pruning that keeps natural form. These were all burned up in the Camp Fire. I did not see a way to upload pictures.

      I'm not a pro by any means but I about died when I saw him hacking off this Camellia bush with those electric hedge trimmers! I recently moved a year ago and the lady who previously owned here had planted 6 winter blooming Camellias (all over 5' now)! I was looking for propagation and pruning videos, and I about died when I saw him start CHOPPING! "WHAT NOT TO DO IS RIGHT"!

    • @cindybaalbergen472
      @cindybaalbergen472 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scodavcole2550 If you walk around them, out 10', then 20' what do you want to see? If they are only 5' now it is either because they haven't been in the ground too many years or, as you say, someone cut them back severely. I always start from underneath and inside the shrub. Of course, Camellias should only be seriously 'talked to' after learning their growth habits. The time of year is very important with spring-blooming shrubs. Too late in the summer and you will be cutting off next spring's blooms. More to it...I can send you some tips I use when training folks if you wish but I don't want to disrespect this fellow's pruning video. lov2grow@gmail.com

    I can honestly say, after gardening for over forty years and when I’m not out there doing it I’m either reading or watching stuff … I’ve never seen anyone get a hedge trimmer onto a beautiful Camelia. I feel like I’ve been witness to an assault 😮😂😢

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am sorry you feel that way. We have nearly 100 camellias on our property and hedging/trimming them this way is very easy and effective. Have you seen camellias used as a hedge? They are truly beautiful.

      Thanks for contributing to the conversation. I like to hear the different views. Although I must say that the over 50 camellias in my garden would disagree. But good discussion is healthy.
