Grilled cheeses sandwiches and Tomato soup is my favorite meal when I'm sick. It's such a shame that Nicola can't have peanut butter because homemade peanut butter cookies are so good.
Next time we must try the grilled cheese with tomato soup, that sounds delicious. Yes Nicola can’t have peanuts, which is a shame, she will never get to try a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

If Nicola wants to try a PB&J type sandwich, you should be able to find sun-butter made with sunflower seeds instead of peanuts. It won't taste exactly the same, but close enough for government work, as my granddad used to say.
Poor Nicola! The look she gives when Andrew is eating the PB&J is what I call the “Daddy, buy me a pony” look. My daughter employs that with deadly accuracy.
I'd always had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on plain white bread (probably Wonder Bread) growing up in the 70s and 80s. But years later when I met my wife, I learned that she had always toasted the bread for hers, and that little change was such a game changer! I rarely have PB&Js nowadays, but when I do, toasting the bread first is the way to go (especially as it makes the peanut butter all warm and melty and you get a good crunch). 😃

@thebritstry no need to apologize. It's a PBJ, the extra bit of it being deep fried made it even better. I'm just saying that the PBJ being deep fried is more like a Monte Crisco, as that is a deep fried decadent ham sandwich
@@byronrocher7346If you have a Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen near you, they make a great Monte Cristo. But yeah, with the loss of Bennigan's, they're the only place I know to still get one. A lot of places will say they have a Monte Cristo, but it's just a sandwich between French toast slices, instead of being batter dipped and fried. Probably healthier, but much less tasty 😂 I have found recipes to make them at home that are actually pretty decent, if you have a deep frier (and it could probably work with an air frier, too, though I haven't tried).

Nicola, if you are able to eat almonds or cashews, you can make a PB&J sandwich using either almond butter or cashew butter. They taste very similar to peanut butter when pulverized and emulsified. Creamy peanut butter and grape jelly/jam for me any type of bread I have. Toast bread then add peanut butter for a smooth easy spread; I prefer jam over jelly but will eat what I have. Goes great with a cup of coffee for a quick breakfast.
Creamy vs. chunky peanut butter is very much a personal choice. Some people enjoy the crunch (like me) and others like it as just smooth paste. There are many peanut butter substitutes out there too, like cashew butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, and the like, so you should be able to find something you can safely eat that's pretty close. Just remember---typically the less sugar and more natural ingredients the butter has, the better it is. My favorite, Adam's, has two ingredients: Peanuts and salt.

@thebritstry I would drive from Arlington, TX to Memphis, TN for Gus' Fried Chicken and Corky's ribs. We'd also grab banana pancakes with crunchy peanut butter syrup at Blue Plate Cafe. It was literally breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the span of a couple hours. 😋
Initially, I was concerned about the ratio of PB&J to bread, especially since Texas Toast is usually super dry. But it looks like really tender bread. Yum.
I’m loving you guys try all of these classics. I wish Nicola could have tasted the PB&J it’s truly a childhood staple. However I’m glad you’re not itching throughout the video😆😁I can’t wait for the next video🫶🏽
So, standard PBJ is on regular white bread, thick layer of peanut butter, thick layer of jam/jelly/preserves (1:1 ratio). This one uses "Texas Toast" which is a bit thicker cut of bread than standard sandwich bread. Often used for thick french toast, etc. Peanut butter is savory, earthy, and a little salty. Which contrasts with the sweetness of the jam/jelly. So, you get sweet+savory. The jam also cuts down the thickness/stickiness of the peanut butter, which can be pretty protein-y/sticky, if eaten just on its own. Anyway, simple to make, "keeps" well (doesn't generally need refrigeration, since the peanut butter doesn't really "go bad" at room temperature, like meat or mayonnaise would), gives you some protein & carbs for energy, reasonably filling. Just good simple comfort food. Good for a light snack, or can make a meal 2-3 of them, if in a hurry.
We always put it on sliced white bread & I’ve never had it deep fried. Wouldn’t have even thought of it. I like creamy peanut butter-not chunky. On our grilled cheese we put butter on the outside of the bread and fry it in a pan.
My mother would alway make grill cheese sandwiches and hot tomato soup in the winter. So good! Sorry Nicola. I'm happy to announce that our university cafeteria has a cheeseburger that might compare to what you're having. It's called Warrior Cheeseburger and I can feel my arthritis flaring up every time I pick it up. This and and Value Meal (Chili on Curly Fries) are the only decent things they have.
A bar near us used to serve Tetris tots before they switched the regular ones and so it was so happy-making to see them again. I love a good tater tot, but Tetris tots? Mmm.
"Totris" ;) Funny that an '80s themed diner would name a burger after a '70s film, huh? My wife and I are planning a Vegas trip next year, will definitely be having at least one of our lunches here. Thanks for the tip!
Back in my elementary school days we had cheese toast with a bowl of tomato soup or chili. My Dad and I went to G. C. Murphys (a department store), they had a little Cafe in back, it was only 3 or 4 booths. We always had the grilled cheese, French fries, and a milkshake. (of course my Dad had to have his usual cup of coffee, which then was about .25 cents a cup🤣🤣. This would have been 1967 - 1968). There a such good memories. We love to reminisce!
That looks like such a fun place! I love that Andrew leaned into the theme and wore a Golden Girls tee-shirt. What a shame that you can't eat peanut butter Nicola, are you allergic to all nuts? Or can you try pecan pie? You could also have a PBJ with almond butter. It's not bad. P.S. My favorite Golden Girls line is when Sophia told Blanche "You should know, you middle aged mattress!".
Peanut Butter is creamy, slightly salty and slightly sweet with the earthy taste of the peanuts.Jelly makes it more earthy, less sweet. There is sunflower butter which sometimes given to allergic children, sunflowers are daisies, peanuts are legumes so the allergens aren't in that.Sunflower seeds,if you haven't tried them ,have a nutty flavor. If you can find it,it might let you taste something close to a PBJ.Try a health food store, they sometimes carry alternative stuff.
Most bread in US supermarkets are 'sandwich loaf' of a fairly standard thickness, the size can vary, shape can be square, tall rectangle or wide rectangle. I prefer the latter in a whole wheat, whole grain, oat, or some variety from a regional bakery. Bread is expensive and not as good as what most Europeans are used to, you won't find the UK wholemeal type either. Unsliced crusty loaves, 'artisanal' breads are even more expensive, you can get some decent bread in some supermarkets, but often you want a bakery for the best. Peanut butter is often stabilized and extended with hydrogenated vegetable oil or Crisco (shortening). Some add sugar or worse high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The best peanut butter is just salt roasted peanuts put through a grinder. Some supermarkets have a machine with a hopper full of nuts and you fresh grind them into a couple sizes of container in the bulk food aisle. Or find a 'natural' brand. Best jams are homemade from berries bought at farmers markets, strawberries or raspberries in season crushed with a masher, sugar stirred in, then pectin dissolved in warm water added, put in cartons for the freezer. Store bought isn't even close. Kids grew up with PB&J for lunch at home or packed for school, they kept well. Favorites were also Grilled Cheese, Tuna Fish, Egg Salad, Ham and Cheese, Bologne, Fried Egg, Roast Beef. Often paired with a soup, chips (crisps), sometimes carrot sticks, radishes, pickles. Some like to mix honey in the peanut butter, substitute slices of banana for the jam or jelly, and grill it. So a fancy or grown up PB&J is a bit of nostalgia. Grilled Cheese is often made with cheddar, but you can use what you like including a mix of different ones, a bit of mustard inside can be nice, some put tomato (not your favorite), but the best way to 'grill' the outside is to spread mayonnaise on the outside and put it in a medium hot pan, turning over when it's golden brown and crispy, by the time the second side is done the cheese should be leaking out and hitting the pan to make cheese crisp bits. You can fancy it up by then dropping freshly grated parmesan cheese in the pan and putting the sandwich on top to add a parmesan crisp layer to one side.
So sorry PBJ is off the menu for you Nicola. Only wish one item this was on their menu for you both to try. The PATTY MELT. First showed up in the 40's but in the 80's made a huge come back. ALSO.......LOVE THE ATTIRE!
The patty melt was on the menu! We had one recently at waffle house and wanted to try something new! We would definitely give it a try if we go back! They Called it:: Ernest p. melt, 1/2 lb. certified Angus ground beef, sauteed red onions, 2 slices of cheddar, mayo, served on toasted texas toast.
I do find one constant in food. The best dishes were invented by the poor. Take leftovers or whatever was unacceptable by others and the poor would turned them into meals and dishes people crave today and seek out.
While you're in Vegas, you really must try an American tradition: The buffet. Many of the casinos on the Strip have great buffet restaurants inside. Despite being in the desert with wasteland all around, Vegas's position as an entertainment destination means it has some of the best food in the country.
You guys are all over the place. Last episode you were still in Texas. I suppose you're back in San Diego and took a Vegas day trip? A PB&J sandwich can be as low or highbrow as you like. Back when we were kids it was Peter Pan, Jif or Skippy 'smooth' PB on plain white sandwich slice bread and Welch's grape Jelly (not to be confused with Jam, Preserves or Conserves). As a teen, I preferred my on toasted wheat bread with my mom's homemade pear preserves. But I can certainly see one deep fried with added sugar. Yummy. Happy Travels N&A.
Your right! We have a couple more videos from the Vegas area! Thanks for sharing your PB&J journey with us! We love hearing about different preferences.
Traditional peanut and jelly is a normal white bread-kinda thin and soft, smooth peanut jelly, and grape jelly. I personally like strawberry or plum or grape.
Grill cheese with very slim cut ham inside of it. (that is how I make it) American cheese but sometimes I'll use baby swiss cheese instead. (or a mixture of both cheeses.) I grew up in the 60's. So was married by the 80s. Take care thank you for the video. PS I always butter burger buns and then put them back into the pan to get a nice crisp bottom. lol
As a rule I've found that you generally find better food in a small locally owned restaurant and any place with national name recognition will only be okay at best. It's those little hole in the wall places that will knock your socks off, and when it comes to classic American diner food the more kitschy or odd the local place is the better the food usually is.
Never had a PBJ like that, I would love to try it (it looks good). A grilled cheese with tomato soup is fantastic. I've never heard of anyone putting mayo on a grilled cheese. Usually, it's butter on both sides.😊
Note, as one gets past middle age, taking in very large amount loads of peanuts or too much peanut butter may not leave stomach feeling well. But I always have some at home and a sandwich or one handful of nuts is enough. I buy various premium / all 'natural' one (Smucker's is most famous but three are lots of others). Simple grilled cheese (maybe with bacon) on whole wheat is a favorite..
2:55 - my first thought was half as much bread, and twice the PB and Jelly. And no frying. Just bread, PB&J was the “got home from school, I’ll fix it for myself (more days than not)
The bread for a peanut butter and jelly (or jam or preserves) sandwich doesn't have to be a specific type of bread. PB&J can be spread on thin or thick bread or spread on crackers (Ritz crackers for example). I never had a deep fried PB&J but I bet it's nice. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are delicious because the savory and sweet combination. It's typically washed down with an ice cold glass of milk. SO good! Andrew couldn't tell the flavor of the jelly but if the jelly is purple, it's definitely grape. If its red it's most likely strawberry (I wouldn't think raspberry).
I appreciate your detailed comment about PB&J sandwiches, a glass of milk would have been great. It's great to hear your insights! We think it was grape but it was a light coating.
Are you also allergic to almond butter? I`m sure that would be comparable. Or maybe a hazelnut spread. Fresh bread, grape or strawberry jelly or jam, your favorite spread and a nice glass of ice cold milk. Fantastic.
Love you two! I've watched all of your videos, but you have never tried any African American owned places. Since you're in Vegas and if you have the time, try one of these African American businesses. Court Cafe, Philly Freeze me, Catchers Fish House, and Stuff My Turkey.
Try a peanut butter and honey sandwich, on wheat bread! For whatver reason it changes the texture of the honey. It kind if crystalizes it snd oh, my, it is so good. Its kind if the adult version of PB & J...
we americans and canadians always find it a little bit odd when we travel abroad and then find out that peanut butter is not nearly as popular outside north america as it is within.
Nicola please do try sunflower seed butter in place of peanut butter. It's a great substitution. I almost can't taste the difference (and if I'm being honest, I slightly prefer the texture of smooth sunbutter, anyway)!
Should try a banana an peanut butter fried in butter toast. It was Elvis presley favorite. It's simple to fix just split a banana put peanut butter on one put it together butter bread an fry till its toasted. Not sure what you could substitute for peanut butter if your allergic to it Nutella maybe.
Buy some “wow”butter. Its just like peanut butter but no peanuts. I believe its made with soy. My whole family is allergic to tree nuts. They sell it at walmart. There are several different types. They have “sunbutter” too. Its made with sunflower seeds. Really really good alternative for peanut allergies.
You guys should go around Las Vegas and go to the Meow Wolf attraction, it's not food related but I feel like it would be a different experience for the two of you! I would love to see you guys go to different attraction in the U.S while also making the food videos! 💕
I don't think the thickness of the bread or type of bread is an issue.. but for me I like the Peanut butter to be on the thick side. folks say grape, but I don't like grape.. so I always use strawberry or rasberry.. again relatively thick. I saw another comment about using another type of butter. Grilled cheese and tomato soup!!! I also love a LOT of butter.. and I put salt on the sandwich.

You two are my favorite TH-cam superstars. You are always happy, fun loving and tender with one another. Nicola, have you ever had your thyroid levels checked? After those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches Andrew made me jump up and make one! ❤❤
Andrew said that PB&J was delicious, Thank you so much for your kind words! We're glad you enjoy our content. Yes, I have hyperthyroidism but i have a doctor helping me! Thank you
I do too! I am sorry to be intrusive.
No it is not intrusive, if I didn’t know I would want somebody to point this out so I could get it looked at. Also with all of the comments about my neck, I know when I am going over active. Sometimes I don’t notice any difference. So thank you!😍
omg... Im sorry Nicola ... He is rubbing it in... lmao!! Y'all too cute!!
Thanks for watching and laughing with us!
I'm happy to announce that our university cafeteria has a cheeseburger that might compare to what you're having. It's called Warrior Cheeseburger and I can feel my arthritis flaring up every time I pick it up. This and and Value Meal (Chili on Curly Fries) are the only decent things they have.
That sounds delicious! we would love to try the Warrior Cheeseburger!
A bar near us used to serve Tetris tots before they switched the regular ones and so it was so happy-making to see them again. I love a good tater tot, but Tetris tots? Mmm.
It was such a fun twist on a classic snack! So happy we found Tetris tots.! the 80's Cafe was a really fun experience! Thanks for watching
I totally related when you said you only eat melted cheese. I didn't know anyone related to me on that! LOL
It's always nice to find someone who shares your quirky food preferences! Thanks for watching
"Totris" ;) Funny that an '80s themed diner would name a burger after a '70s film, huh? My wife and I are planning a Vegas trip next year, will definitely be having at least one of our lunches here. Thanks for the tip!
We didn’t even notice this! The cafe is definitely worth a visit. 😀
I'm the same way about my cheese. I have to have it melted too. That all looked delicious. Cool place.
It was So good! It was really tasty.. Melted cheese all the way!
For PBJ you can use sunbutter( sunflower seeds) or cashew or almond butter
Great advice! Next time we will try one of those. Thanks for watching
Such beautiful memories! Food has a special way of bringing people together.
The golden girls was so funny!! I am only allergic to Peanuts which is apparently quite common. Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing your insights on different types of nut butters! It's always interesting to learn about alternative options.
This place reminded me of the pizza joint “slice of the 80’s” with the inside being 80’s themed pretty good pizza too lol
It was such a fun experience! Thanks for watching
Thats food 😋 looks so yummy 😋. Was born 😋 in the 80s, grew 😋 up in the 90s, I would 😋 loved that place if I was in Vegas.
The food was delicious, if you ever visit Vegas this place is well worth a visit. They have put so much effort into it. 😀
Hey that’s right next to my university! I’ll have to try it out
Definitely give it a go, it was so good and the decor is amazing. 😀
I had no idea you could physically see jealously until Nicola watched you eat that pb&j
Lol!!! So Right. Thanks for watching
You have to try the chicken and waffles at Grand Lux Cafe. Oh my word! The best I've ever had! 😋😁
Thanks for the tip! Sounds Delicious.
While you're in Vegas, you really must try an American tradition: The buffet. Many of the casinos on the Strip have great buffet restaurants inside. Despite being in the desert with wasteland all around, Vegas's position as an entertainment destination means it has some of the best food in the country.
Thanks for the advice, we will see what we can do! Thanks for watching
Thanks for letting us know.
Grill cheese with very slim cut ham inside of it. (that is how I make it) American cheese but sometimes I'll use baby swiss cheese instead. (or a mixture of both cheeses.) I grew up in the 60's. So was married by the 80s. Take care thank you for the video. PS I always butter burger buns and then put them back into the pan to get a nice crisp bottom. lol
Your grilled cheese with ham sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing your recipe. We will have to give it a try.
As a rule I've found that you generally find better food in a small locally owned restaurant and any place with national name recognition will only be okay at best. It's those little hole in the wall places that will knock your socks off, and when it comes to classic American diner food the more kitschy or odd the local place is the better the food usually is.
That's so true! Local spots often have the best-hidden gems. Thanks for watching
Never had a PBJ like that, I would love to try it (it looks good).
A grilled cheese with tomato soup is fantastic. I've never heard of anyone putting mayo on a grilled cheese. Usually, it's butter on both sides.😊
Thanks for checking out the video! You should definitely give the PBJ a try, It was delicious. it's seems to be a tasty twist on a classic.
This place looks FUUUUUN! Edit: Oh right next to the airport too, I'll have to make time to stop by next time I'm in Vegas
It was really fun! The food was so good! Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing! That bacon on grilled cheese sounds delicious. Thanks for watching
2:55 - my first thought was half as much bread, and twice the PB and Jelly. And no frying.
Just bread, PB&J was the “got home from school, I’ll fix it for myself (more days than not)
Andrew really enjoyed it! but maybe we should try a more traditional version. Thanks for watching.
I don’t know about “traditional” - just easy to make after school when you’re 12yo. So, maybe MY tradition. ;0)
Try a Monte Cristo. Made like that PB&J but with turkey, ham, cheese and eaten with a jam. Yum!
That sounds great! they did have one on the menu. Next time we will give that a try.
@@thebritstry You're most welcome!
If you’re still in Las Vegas, please go to Big B’s BBQ in Henderson.
Oh no! Sounds really good. Next time we will for sure. Thanks for the recommendation.
Are you also allergic to almond butter? I`m sure that would be comparable. Or maybe a hazelnut spread. Fresh bread, grape or strawberry jelly or jam, your favorite spread and a nice glass of ice cold milk. Fantastic.
Thanks for those suggestions, I mainly just have a problem with peanuts
It exceeded your no expectations.....?.......wow!
Yes it did!😀
Love you two! I've watched all of your videos, but you have never tried any African American owned places. Since you're in Vegas and if you have the time, try one of these African American businesses. Court Cafe, Philly Freeze me, Catchers Fish House, and Stuff My Turkey.
Thanks for watching, we tried Li’l Dizzy’s and Nonno's Cajun Cuisine & Pastries. We will however be trying more. Thanks for watching!😀
Try a peanut butter and honey sandwich, on wheat bread! For whatver reason it changes the texture of the honey. It kind if crystalizes it snd oh, my, it is so good. Its kind if the adult version of PB & J...
Thanks for the suggestion! Wheat bread really does bring out a unique texture in the honey. we’ll definitely give that a try!
we americans and canadians always find it a little bit odd when we travel abroad and then find out that peanut butter is not nearly as popular outside north america as it is within.
80's cafe with a picture on the outside of Bowie in 1973.
We missed that! It was really cool inside though. Thanks for watching
Some people actually use mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of the sandwich to grill the bread.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s always interesting to hear how different techniques can elevate a simple sandwich. Thanks for watching!
Nicola please do try sunflower seed butter in place of peanut butter. It's a great substitution. I almost can't taste the difference (and if I'm being honest, I slightly prefer the texture of smooth sunbutter, anyway)!
Thank you for the recommendation! I appreciate your input and we will test it out soon. Thanks for watching
you are in my childhood.. enjoy
Ours Too! So much Nostalgia and the food was good as well.. Thanks for watching
While you're here in Vegas, I have to suggest a trip to the Golden Steer Steakhouse.
Watch this space!😉 Thanks for sharing this recommendation
A grilled cheese sandwich is also called a cheese toasty.
Good to know , Thanks for sharing
Ah, I've been there. Cool place.
That place was great and the food was good as well! Thanks for watching
Hopefully you did a video at the Bacchanel Buffet at Caesar's Palace.
Thanks for the suggestion! We tried to get there but this was a very short trip! next time we will.
Oh my goodness! Nicola, you are dream with that blue dress!
Thanks for watching!
Should try a banana an peanut butter fried in butter toast. It was Elvis presley favorite. It's simple to fix just split a banana put peanut butter on one put it together butter bread an fry till its toasted. Not sure what you could substitute for peanut butter if your allergic to it Nutella maybe.
Thanks for the suggestions! we appreciate you sharing this fun food idea with us.
Thanks for the tips! And advice
The fried PB&J sounded like a gimmick but now I want one.
Andrew said it tasted sooo good!! The toasted bread was also great on the grilled cheese. Thanks for watching
I live the Golden Girls Shirt!
The Golden Girls were amazing! I'll put the amazon link in the description for you.
Fun!!
It really was a fun experience, the food was good aswell! Thanks for watching
@@thebritstry always enjoy you two!
You guys should go around Las Vegas and go to the Meow Wolf attraction, it's not food related but I feel like it would be a different experience for the two of you! I would love to see you guys go to different attraction in the U.S while also making the food videos! 💕
Thanks for the recommendation!😀
Next time we're in Vegas, I want to try this place. By the way, it looks like they were using TX Toast as their bread.
Yes you should definitely try it. It was very good
Lol! Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are aggressively American. I say that as an American. Great video as per the norm.
Andrew really loved the PB&J Sandwich! Thanks for sharing and for watching
Thanks for sharing! Appreciate you taking the time to share your sandwich-making secrets with us. Your unique combinations are inspiring!
