  • The Blues won their first title three years ago and it was quite the run by a team few expected much out of that year.

I think you made a critical omission when you didn't mention Yeo getting sacked in November and Berube coming in to win the Cup as the interim coach. He really deserves a lot of the credit for the comeback.

No disrespect to Mike Yeo himself, but as a coach, he just isn’t a great players coach. Berube took a talented bunch of underachievers, gave them their confidence back, and turned them into champions. He absolutely deserves credit for the turnaround. He didn’t become a Blues all-time great coach when he won the cup. He did that in the locker room just before the start of Game 7. “Pump it up, we’re here for a fuckin reason, because we’re a fuckin good hockey team, and we’re gonna fuckin come home with the cup here tonight. Let’s fuckin go!”

I will to my dying breath argue that this was the greatest storyline for a team winning a Cup...last place in the league, the emergence of Binnington from nowhere, firing the coach, "Gloria", the upsets in the playoffs, overcoming the SJ hand pass no-call to dominate, "you guys are f*cked" (Maroon), winning a Cup game in St. Louis for the first time ever (game 4, I was there!!!), and the absolute dominant game 7 performance Boston...to have FINALLY won the Cup in the fashion they did, man it was never more exciting to be a Blues fan in my entire life.

Couldn’t agree more. It took all the pressure off future seasons for me because how could it ever be as dramatic as it was the first time. Absolute highs that will probably not be replicated. Couldn’t ask for more is the way I look at it.

One bittersweet aspect was that when March 2020 started, I really thought a repeat trip to the final was likely. They were still on a roll, and Colorado wasn't yet what they've become. But I like that it has the awesome story the way it happened. I dunno what happened to them during the break but had they done a repeat there would have been the inevitable "covid cup asterisk, fake dynasty" garbage.

I totally agree. Petro and Bouw were one of the best defensive pairs in the league that second half of the season. Steen was an absolute class act. He went from being a top line guy just a couple seasons prior, to the 4th line with great attitude. Made our other 4th liners better and gave us a complete roster. Really hard to win the cup without all 4 lines producing.

Some unbelievable wins enroute to raising the cup. True backbrakers for the other teams...Swartzy's goal in the last 15 seconds against the Jets in a game they never should of won started the magic. Maroons 2Ot winner and Pietragelo's backhand top shelfer against Tukka with less than 10 seconds in the period won them the Cup. A great run for sure.

  • @82drumhead

As a lifelong Blues fan I was 37 when they won in 2019. As you said, year after year of disappointment. As a teen in the mid 90s watching them get bounced over and over again even when they had Pronger, Hull and the Great One. Just never could do it. (Det was always better) Then when Hitchcock took over they still couldn't. Finally....it happend. I stood there in my living room with my hands on my head in disbelief. When Petrangelo raised the cup I literally screamed aloud in my house in front of my wife and daughter and my eyes welled up. People were outside banging pots and pans and shooting off fireworks lol. All those years of heartbreak for us here and they finally won a cup. Over a million people came to the city for the parade. Amazing. Hopefully they have more to come. Lots of good teams out there and Col obviously is a problem lol. Was a great time to be a Blues fan. Still is. Ok..sob story over😊

    • @Beer-can_full_of_toes
      @Beer-can_full_of_toes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I was there with you brother. The parade was a once in a lifetime experience too. I have pieces of the Old Barn on my bar at my house and several blues sweaters. I’ve been a Blues fan my whole life and the feeling when that last horn blew still makes my eyes sweat. I went outside and blasted Gloria from my back porch and promptly ordered my cup merch.
That October I was hit by a car on my motorcycle and was almost killed or paralyzed. Broken spine collapsed lungs and grocery list of other things. I remember laying in the ICU thinking at least I got to see our Blues win the cup. (I was also thinking a bit about Tony Twist lol) Once they found I could still move my legs and arms and that I wasn’t going to die I used them as inspiration and motivation to not let off the gas to recover as fully as I could. 3 months later I was back to work and haven’t let any moment pass by. This team has meant so much to so many of us that it goes way beyond the sport. “

I was a freshman in high school their first year in St. Louis in 1967-1968 so have seen them all. Outside of Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante their early years the Blues goalies just were not able to cut it for a long playoff run. Team depth also an issue. Jordan Binnington was the real MVP for this 2019 season in my opinion as they finally had a hot goalie for the playoffs. This past season after a poor regular season Jordan Binnington was again a hot goalie starting at the end of the season and the Blues would have even lost in the first round to Minnesota with Husso as goalie. It all changed with the Kadri injury of Binnington. I appeciated the assessment by the Hockey Guy following the game on the play saying the only thing for certain was Rosen did not push Kadri in to Binnington causing the injury and the player intent by Kadri would be discussed for many years. I still believe the Blues would have been the team that would have beaten Colorado this year with no disrepect to the Avs but Binnington can be a dominant yet streaky goalie capable of controlling a game like how Bob Gibson pitched many years for the Cardinals. Remember that game 7 performance versus Boston by Binnington. The last to first run by the Blues in 2019 was amazing and I would say did have better defense than the 2021-2022 team that had better offense. Good assessment on the 2019 team.

The 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs are the most unpredictable playoffs I've ever seen. San Jose and Columbus were THE REASONS, why there was no TB-VGK final. The SJ-VGK and CBJ-TB series were game-changers

If only Parayko played the way in 2019 we might have made it past the second round. Instead 3 shitty ass goals against for a stupid CP move. I was so high on him coming into the year but what a let down that was. Binnington definetly was playing his game in the playoffs but of course Kadri is involved in an injury go figure. Nevertheless, there is always next year. We need our younger players to continue to step up and play hard. Getting Leddy back would be awesome. Getting Faulk and Krug really helped..too bad we didn't get to see Krugs much in the playoffs. He is definetly a dynamic player. When the Blues are healthy they are alot to handle.

As a Boston fan that was a really disappointing cup final performance in the end. I think the Bruins were the better team overall and it showed in the first six, but they decided to absolutely implode in the deciding game.
Can't take away anything from STL though, they deserved to be there and didn't choke like my team did. I've got a little salt from the non-call in game 5 but not enough to say it wasn't a deserved cup win.

    Couple things..
First off, if you look at their playoff history, the Blues would make it to the third round once every 15 years, like clockwork. The years in between would just be a slew of first and second round exits. In 2019 we weren't scheduled to win 2 rounds until 2031, I was way caught off guard when they made it past the second round..
Second, I'd like to take a moment to mention the way Berube handled the infamous hand pass to end the Sharks game. He didn't berate the refs during the press conference, and you know they took notice. Now how much do you think that played a part in the final when he said something about the calls and got a noticeable response.

The Blues drank from the goblet in 2019 and ZILCH since then. What happened?? Not exactly the hallmark of a great team. Tampa Bay ate everyone's lunch until Colorado won it this year - beating the Blues en route to a victory parade. Are the Blues really done? What happened? The window of opportunity seems to have closed. Farewell St. Louis.

    • @justbob3000

I know you're trolling but I'll respond anyway. This year the Blues lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champions. They beat that team in 2 games just like the defending Stanley Cup champions. Furthermore, the NHL's dirtiest player had to take out the Blues' goalie to ensure Colorado's tainted victory.
The facts speak for themselves. With Binnington in net the Blues were just as legitimate of a Cup contender this year as any team.

There's no such thing as a 'fluke' Stanley Cup championship. The champion has to beat 4 other teams in a 7 game series to accomplish that goal.
Winning an Olympic gold medal, or NCAA championship, can be a bit of a fluke where all it takes is one victory to win each playoff round. Also, a team may win one 7 game playoff series with a run of unusual 'luck' but not four series in a row. Last, in the final round the Blues beat the team that was tied for the 2nd best NHL regular season record. So, it wasn't like they played the other Conference's weakest opponent.
Only bitter loser fans refer to a Stanley Cup championship as a 'fluke'.
