    LYRICS:
    Reynolds wrap on rabbit ears
TV trays, back in the day we watched The Wonder Years
    Old Wagoneer, wood panel doors
We wore out our own jeans, they weren't faded from the store
And that old couch, we'd pull the cushions off
    If we found fifty cents
We'd go crazy, we thought we were rich
One-bathroom sink, we’d all take turns
Once a week, go out to eat for pizza after church
And that old church, red carpet floors
Same old navy paisley tie daddy always wore
And we'd sing hymns they’d pass the plate when it was time to give
They'd put in a twenty, I thought we were...
    Rich
We didn't have it all but we all we thought we did
And Mama always said that we were blessed and I believed her
Never thought the grass was greener
On the other side of our old chain link fence
    Yeah we were rich
I never saw New York, never took a plane
Once a year we drove out to the nearest KOA
And we'd light a fire, stare at the stars
And play flashlight tag with the people in the tent there next to ours
    Time of our lives
We had as much as all the other kids
Maybe that's why we thought we were…
    Rich
We didn't have it all but we all we thought we did
And I remember Mama sayin we were blessed and I believed her
Never thought the grass was greener
On the other side of our old chain link fence
    Yeah we were rich
Got a few more dollars in my pocket
Since the day I left that cotton town
Back there they all think I made it
But God knows I'd trade it
For everything that we had in that house
    Cause we were rich
    Yeah we were..
    Rich
We didn't have it all but we all we thought we did
And Mama always said that we were blessed and I believed her
Never thought the grass was greener
On the other side of our old chain link fence
    Yeah we were rich
    Yeah we were rich....

I never knew we were poor. Money wasn't everything to us back then. Life was more about friends and family. Mama always had a good meal on the table. We had a roof over our head, and clothes on our backs. Food shelter and clothing. It's all you really need in life. Love makes you rich.

We were a family of ten in a small mining community in the hills of eastern Kentucky. My father was a coal miner until the mines closed. After that, there was little money and my father abandoned us. My mother, full of faith and loving her family, took care of us: three meals a day, mostly biscuits, gravy, eggs from our own chickens, cornbread, fried potatoes and pinto soup beans; clean -- albeit patched -- clothing; and all of the love that a mother could give her eight children. All the years of poverty were filled with our love for each other and so we thought little about the lack of money as my mother struggled and succeeded in seeing us all through to adulthood. We never thought of being poor, only of respecting and loving one another, and others.

Why does this make me want to cry? This seems so nostalgic and makes you remember a simpler time. I feel like so many people today are worried about being bigger and better, but you really don't need a lot to be happy if you look at the little things like this. Makes you realize how fast the world is changing.

You have NO idea how much this resonates to my childhood....we lived on a small farm, walked 1/4 mile to the bus stop, and those were the BEST years of my life. Sunday after church, we'd go to my cousin's house and have dinner...my daughters look down on me for the life I came from, but I wouldn't trade it for the world...

    • @arpeggiomarketing3264
      @arpeggiomarketing3264 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Same here. This describes my childhood exactly. We weren't poor but we definitely WERE NOT rich. But we never knew any better. Walked home from school every day to our 88 acre farm. Mom and dad had their own business, and worked very hard to give us an incredibe childhood. Then we worked the farm mornings and weekends. It was FUN! Our old country house had no air conditioning, we had 1 bathroom for mom and dad and us 5 kids, you could hear the coyotes at night howling in the fields. We had 2 fun little dogs. That old farm house was not much but it was home! You could sometimes feel the wind blow between the walls from the outside. That wood-burning fireplace was awesome in the winter time. God what a great song that just brings me back to a place that I wish I could really go back to.

I came across this song pulling in my driveway & boy it took me back.. I came from a family of five and my mom worked hard & my stepfather worked even harder at night. My mom made sure we had a hot meal 6 days a week sometimes beans with all of the trimmings maybe spaghetti we ate chicken at least 3 times a week. We had rabbit ears on our television with a little piece of foil . We would play outside ( marbles, jackets, hop scotch, jump rope) drink from the water hose. Our parents made sure we didn't go without anything we needed. They made the best out of what we had and we didn't have time to notice what we didn't have!!! All we knew was we were loved and everything was done with love.

Same here, I'm almost 70, and I thought we were rich, my Dad told me when I was a teenager that we were poor when we were growing up, I thought you could have fooled me, we were Rich, we had a Mom and Dad that loved us, taught us so many things, we fished, swam, had picnics, fish fries, vacation's, great food , clothes and toys , to many things to list, but the greatest thing we had was God and our family. Now that's Rich in my book. I wouldn't trade all we had for a fortune in the bank, time with 2 Awesome wonderful loving and caring parents. Rich in love and giving of themselves. Thank you God and Mom and Dad.

We weren’t even rich enough to be poor. We didn’t even have running water. Had to walk up a mountain for it. . It was bad.. but, we had each other. And we are so close because of it. I remember the tin foil on rabbit ears that would bring in 3 stations. (If we had electric that month) Times were hard, but better. People didn’t have 50 pairs of jeans, you didn’t dream of “talking back”. Entitlement wasn’t a thing. Manners were.. social media consisted of talking to ur neighbors...I’m far from those days. I’ve done very well for myself.. having nothing is a hell of a driving force!!

In the middle of nowhere but we dreamed big, we had love, family and community. I have now become a gypsy going place to place not sure were I will end up. I mess the simple life, my family, and community and the people I grew up with.

"We Were Rich" truly resonated with me when I first listened to it...it automatically reminded of my own childhood and it also transported me back to a simpler time when times were hard and uncertain but families still loved each other, and there was not a single trace of social media in the air or even cell phones. I especially enjoyed Naomi, Natalie, and Jennifer's reflective and sympathetic vocals...I'll never grow tired of kicking back in my cowboy boots and listening to my favorite beautiful female country/western trio!

This is so true. Now that I’m older I went to NYC a couple of years ago (one state north from us) but everybody’s always shocked that I’ve never flown anywhere or did a whole lot. Same thing every year when I was younger and it never took much to make us happy. I wish I could get back to that mindset.

That was my home away from home when I needed to get away as a teenager. I'd swim the day away or read books or listen to CDs. Although I wasn't raised in a small town, this song does make me think of my childhood. I was born in Omaha and lived there from 1984 to 1992. My dad worked and my mom took care of the house. They made sure there was food on our table.
I watched all sorts of shows on TV back then-The kid stuff like "Sesame Street", "Reading Rainbow" and "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". Then there were the game shows like "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune". Prime time stuff like "Cheers", "Family Ties", "The Cosby Show", "Night Court", "MacGyver", "Who's The Boss?", "Growing Pains", "Full House" and yes, even "The Wonder Years". My mom really liked that show as I recall. Back when TV was actually good and worth watching.
Of course, we'd play outside, too. Those were pretty good years living in Omaha. Of course, at the time, I didn't appreciate it. It's funny. You think at the time everything sucks. Then as time goes on, you realize just how good it was. Why people remember the past better than it actually was beats me.
Anyway, this song sort of helps me think of being a kid living in Omaha even though it's a big city.

Wow this song really took me back growing up and just how life was good with the simple. It may be why I desire to go back to those simple times. I am so grateful for all my parents did for me and my siblings. Btw the melody is beautiful and spot on.

We were rich ! We had God , we had morals , we had real parents , men knew their place , women knew their place. No crossing or mixing things up. Confusion was recognized as confusion not "accepted" as normal. We are living in the last days my fellow humans. Get right with our Creator and our Lord while there is still time.

This song reminds me of the time my extended family rented some cabins at Garner State Park in Texas and me and my cousins snuck out at 2am and got drunk on the adults' Mike's Hard Lemonade then we threw up all over my parents van. I thought we were gonna get in so much trouble, but everyone was enjoying each other's company so much nobody felt it was appropriate to make a big stink of it... lovely, simple times...

Love this song! The music video and lyrics are telling my life's story growing up in the 80s and 90s. Living out in the boondocks, playing in the sprinkler, drinking from a water hose, swimming at a swimming hole at the local campground, roasting s'mores around a campfire while staring at the stars, living out the blizzard of 93, going to a small church, watching grade school sports games, and many other fond memories. We sure didn't have it all either but you can't replace memories like that. What I wouldn't trade to go back to those days when life was less chaotic
