I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know

man if I meet him ever. we could have become good freinds. I heard the solo album on the island when I was 5 and I did countless preformances with my parents being the audience. If I could tell him that I care for most of his solo work more than the pink floyd records. he would flip.

The wall, to me, is the sound of depression, anxiety, and longing. It’s been a part of my life, but upon my first listen, front to back, I cried. The sound of the instruments practically screaming had me feeling anything for the first time in almost a decade, after many toxic, and abusive relationships.

That segment in The Wall really hit me. I was in a very similar situation to that (including the 360p version of the movie with Russian subtitles) I had gotten to the point where I just didn’t wanna keep going, but The Wall gave me hope that if Pink could tear down his wall then so could I. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the album, it’s oddly comforting to hear someone else on that topic because it truly makes me feel like I’m not alone. The wall saved me, Was like my closer friend during my school days, I was raised by my mother and my dad just was never in my life, The album was like having someone who understands you and tells you that you'll find the way that the bleeding hearts and artist would make you through so I totally feel you, a lot see the wall as the wall that ended the band but ending is something natural for musicians as they grow and thinking that the wall is that end of an era I can only say it was their highest musical and emotional piece of work, simply the best and what makes a great band to step up to the band

Thank you for your beautiful and uplifting story. I've said in the past that once you "get" Pink Floyd, it forever alters your worldview because you can't "un-get" Pink Floyd. Very few bands (expecially rock bands) impart true wisdom but Pink Floyd does. Clearly, when we say that Pink Floyd's music is life-altering, you are living proof that it's true. I believe that Roger Waters would love your story because I think that he'd find it fulfilling.
After all, this is why, Roger wrote us THE WALL.

It's unlikely you will see this given it's a year later, but I just wanted to say Thank You for every second of this video. It was recommended on the exact day at the exact time in the exact location to be exactly what I needed to hear for maximum positive effect - AND earned you another sub. Beyond that, as the resident Floyd scholar in my social circles, my uber-fandom will lead some to dismiss my claim that not only is it reductive to call Pink Floyd music depressing, it has tremendous power to lift the depressed out of their malaise, if they are receptive. The band's message more often than not wasn't "society sucks", but rather "this may be how the world works right now, but it doesn't HAVE to be". Thanks for elucidating my point better than I ever could.

This reminds me of an interview where the interviewer talked about ABITW Part 2 being anti-education and Roger Waters was quick to clarify that it wasn't anti-education, it was just arguing for BETTER education. They're not a nihilist band and they're very interesting in both recognizing that society is in a hole and trying to figure out how we can get out of it

You said we could chime in soooooo....
    1. More: A lot of people cite The Nile Song as being proto-heavy metal. 2. ASFOS was the PF/Syd swan song. Being a Syd Barrett fan, I like it for nostalgia sake, but don't often listen to it except for Let There Be More Light, because why it's side one, cut one. 3. You have courage to bring up Louder Than Words, being that was early Polly Samson influence. I'm sure she's a lovely person, and admire her for her devotion to David and family. But she's no Roger Waters...I'm not a fan. 4. OBC, you said you watched More, did you ever watch La vallée? 5. PATGOD is "The" Pink Floyd, in many ways a completely different band. The US release had See Emily Play as side one, cut one. I heard that song on AM radio when I was 11 years old (sadly, omitting Bike). As I mentioned above, I'm a fan of Syd, so I actually consider this album separately from the rest (and best). 6. Atom Heart Mother has a second side? (Footage from Musikforum Ossiachersee gets bonus points!) 7. WYWH was Waters filled with guilt. As their commercial success grew, I believe he had remorse about leaving Syd behind. Fortunately for Syd, Relics brought additional publishing revenue to his purse. 8. Animals was Roger Water's lefty emotions bubbling to the surface. Which is rich, considering his increasing wealth. But the guitar solo bursting in at 8:07 on Sheep is pure joy. 9. Thank you for sharing your personal story re: The Wall. That was very cool of you and I totally wish you well and send good juju your way. As for the album, I have too many outside opinions on it to like it much (the interpersonal relations of Pink Floyd at this time, and how much of it is drawn directly from Syd Barrett's life without apology) however, I do love the song Run Like Hell. Believe it or not, that was being played on KROQ (famous alternative rock station in LA if you're not from there) and nobody cared that it was Pink Floyd, it was just good!
Good job on this! I hope you continue to create! Your narrative was well written and flowed. The graphics and editing job rocks. (By the way, my avatar is a screen grab of Syd from the second Arnold Layne video: "Why can't you see?")

warning: this is going to be a very long comment talking about alot of different stuff. each paragraph has its own different topic so i hope it isn't too difficult to read.
A lot of songs from different Pink Floyd albums sound like they could go together in a single album. Sometimes Floyd and Spotify would release song compilations that would be total crap because they'd try to combine songs from Piper and The Wall (for example) and it just doesn't fit. In fact most of the songs in both albums wouldn't fit in any of the other albums. even a few of the vaguer-meaning songs in The Wall, which shows how diverse their music is.
There are songs in AHM, Meddle, and Obscured By Clouds that sound like they could've been in the same album, and I wish they would get some of the songs from those albums and have them transition to each other with wind or sound effects, as I think it would make for a perfect compilation. I'm sure it would never happen, as I don't think Spotify on its own is allowed to do that with their music, and I'm also sure David Gilmour is completely done with Pink Floyd.
I also would like to say how the songs from WYWH and Animals could be combined in a compilation album as well. I've seen a lot of compilation albums and, like I said, none of the songs ever go together and it always sounds all over the place. It's almost as if they ran all of their music in some kind of random shuffler and just added the songs in that random order.
I've actually made an audio file combining the two albums (alot of the songs on Animals were going to be on WYWH). It starts with Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pt. I and then blends into Sheep with wind ripped from The Wish You Where album combined with sheep and bird noises. I really like how Pink Floyd often began their In The Flesh Tour with Sheep when they begin playing songs from Animals. I'd also like to mention that I used to 2018 version of both songs because you can hear the electronic and synth sounds in Sheep a lot more and I like Pigs On The Wing 2018 version better than the original. Then I have the song connect to Dogs with some added dog noises and wind sound effects. However instead of using the 2018 version, I mostly used the original version, as I like how the production quality gives the song a sort of dark, echoey feel. It sounds like music that was made last week being recorded with older equipment, inside a large, dark, echoey mansion. I also combined a few guitar solos and parts of You've Gotta Be Crazy from Live at Wembley. though it could be a little jarring so I changed the pitch and tempo around so that it sounds more like an experimental, yet good-sounding edition rather than something that was shoe-horned in. After Dogs, I follow it with Welcome To The Machine and that concludes the first half of the fan compilation. First song in Part II would be Pigs, which will feature more pig sound effects in the beginning of the song, similar to the live version of the song back in the 70s. that would later go into Have A Cigar. Have A Cigar would go into Wish You Were Here, and then I downloaded a version of Pigs on the Wings with an extended solo. Although this version re-sings the first Pigs On The Wings (because it's basically POTW pt. I and pt. II with a Snowy White solo in between them), enough time has passed where it's not even a big deal, and the solo makes it worth it. the song also sound much more echoey and louder since its using the original production quality. And although that may be a bit inconsistent, I feel like it works well because the end of the song gives the whole thing a different meaning and I kind of like the idea of meaning being tied into sound and feel. it's also very subtle. It being loud and echoey would make it sound like it's the very last song of the album but it almost hits you as a surprise as you listen to the second Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
after I listen to the audio file, i like to listen to DSOTM right after. it find it amazing to listen to the - almost sad - ending of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, blending into silence, and then suddenly hearing heartbeats of Speak To Me, going into Breath In The Air. I find it phenomenal. And then of course, after i listen to Dark Side, I listen to Echoes. though of course i don't think they belong on the same album and certainly not on the same album as the others I mentioned. Especially Echoes, since Echoes doesn't really sing about society issues or any life problems as far as I cant tell. Dark Side MIGHT sort of fit a little bit with the other two albums because Dark Side talks about specific topics in a similar way that the other two albums do, but it doesn't SOUND anything like them and a lot of the things on Wish You Were Here are a bit more ambiguously written in some ways and a couple of songs are specifically about Syd Barrett.
A bit off topic but I noticed how Welcome to The Machine has a sort of double meaning within its lyrics. On one hand, the Machine represents the music industry and the lyrics speaks of someone entering in the music industry and being used. but on the other hand, the lyrics strangely sound like a father telling his son that he needs to get himself ready for the world. I think it goes well with the compilation because songs like Sheep, Dogs, Pigs, and even Shine kinda gives you an idea of the kind of world one needs to get ready for. And Have a Cigar is an amazing song to represent one's interaction with a dog-like character.
Even songs like Dogs have sort of a double meaning to it, because the song is talking about the cut throat business men but it's also sometimes seems to be talking about criminals in general and those who hunt the sheep. Though, i do think the song's name is a little odd. I mean I do get it and it does make sense in terms of the last few lyrics of the song and I also get how each song HAS to represent a farm animal. But if you think about it, Dogs represent protectors of society. not the criminals or the scoundrels, or those who prey on the sheep. Dogs protect and LEAD the sheep. I get that the album had to be dark, but the album would still be dark if they made a song about Dogs being protectors, and just renamed the original song to be Wolves, as wolves are truly the ones who hunt the sheep. One of the many purposes of shephard and guard dogs is to protect sheep from wolves. Dogs is still the best song on the album and one of the best i've ever heard.
anyways, im done with this pointless rant lmfaoo

A lot of the stuff you have said in context to the wall is something I relate with, it's why I love the wall too, personally I love echoes and wywh because I was listening to this while going through this. Echoes has really pulled me out of the lows, just like wywh makes you feel not good, it's how the wall makes me feel, it's the album that has to be played or the movie that has to be watched at the right time. The movie has also made me cry for the same reasons, in the flesh, thin ice, mother, nobody home and the show must go on hit me hard, especially with the buildup to the show must go on, saying that it's ok, that you must push on is such a strong message. I'm so happy that you have found the album that means so much to you, that has helped you so much, that's a big thing about good albums and music, it hits you hard, it means a lot, it hits you deep.

Great vid! I generally have a similar ranking, but I can never pick just one favourite album (although Echoes is decidedly my favourite song of theirs.) Your story is very touching and it reminded me of the dark times I went through when I first found The Wall, and how I would listen to it over and over again, whether it made me feel better ...or sometimes worse. It was just so cathartic either way. I didn't fully get the concept for a while but the album made me feel understood. That's the power of The Wall, I guess! Oh, and it's cool you mentioned Wearing The Inside Out - no one ever talks about that song but it's an excellent little hidden gem.

I always feel like one of these days and echoes are good enough by themselves to bring meddle to number 2 for me. They’re definitely my top 2 favorite Floyd songs of all time which is why they’re up there for me. DSOTM is just too good and complete to get dethroned. The wall, animals, and WYWH all change around depending on what I’m liking at the time.
I have a similar connection that you have with the wall to echoes, I was depressed, angry with myself, sick of trying to connect with people and it failing. It gave me a sense of rising again from the ashes with the lonely middle section to the crescendo of that slide guitar and the final verse of that tells a story of opening up again and reaching out for the human connection that I yearned for
    All in all Good list!

All I can say about Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in terms of the landscape of music in 1967, is put on Piper, then put on Buffalo Springfield's first album, two totally different sides of the spectrum of what was happening at the time (you'll either love or hate it but I think these albums have a good representation of music at the time, excluding what the Beatles were doing of course)

Did you know that animals album was inspired by the book Animal Farm... The book is well baisicly the album! I really recommend it (the book) because it is short and from what I understand it talks about how the soviet union turned into a dictatorship.
Also I just find it really funny how more is my favourite album but almost every ranking on yt puts it really low on the list. Idk I just love all the tracks including spanish piece and quicksilver. Up the kyber and the party sequences are not that great but it is still my favourite album... Cirrus minor, the nile song, the crying song, green is the colour, cymbaline, ibiza bar, more blues, dramatic and main theme these are some of my favourite songs. Also this is probably the best ranking I've seen so far and not because of the numbers the albums go to but because you really did a good job explaining why you put the album so low/high on the list

Greetings from another trans woman having a very intense history with the Wall. Thank You for giving this album due praise. This is one of the few albums, if not the only one where i can wholeheartedly say: the world would be a worse place without it.
I admit in my "today" ranking of the Pink floyd albums it doesn´t make more than No 5, but back in the days of adolescence (about 30 years ago) it was huge for me. Indeed, there has never been another album that i could play on my guitar and sing along to it all the way though. That alone.
Nowadays it doesn´t get any higher in my ranking because after having worked through the stuff The Wall teaches, it´s not that necessary to me anymore. So when i listen to it nowadays it just leaves me a bit sad and depressed and drags me back into those states of mind, that i am very glad to have grown out of. And then the music on this is sometimes a little filler - like the infamous Another Brick in the wall pt2, that i never need to hear again, Pink Floyd has such great songs, why do all the radio stations always play just this one? Please someone make this stop! And: I really miss a bit more about what´s "Outside the Wall" - i really want to discover that nowadays and those not even 2 minutes don´t really do it for me.
For making it complete - The 4 albums beating the Wall nowadays, because they are just lyrically AND musically perfect all the way though are:
4 - Dark Side of the Moon
3 - The final Cut (i know a whole lot of people would never rank this so high but to me this just is a perfect album, no wasted note on here)
2 - Wish You were here
1 - Animals (This is the one where i always get mad about people interpreting it as "They say that all people are either Dogs Pigs or Sheep". Bullshit. They describe doglike, piglike and sheeplike people, but in no way i hear them say that "You have to pick in which of those described hells You want to live". I´ll always prefer to be human. I´ll always keep my heart open, vulnerable and as full of compassion as i can be for all the Dogs and Sheep and Pigs and Cats and Trees and Frogs and Whales and demigods and so on. And that will always give me perfect protection from any Pig on the Wing.)

It’s so interesting to me how Floyd rankings differ so much, that’s a testament to how great they truly are. For me personally I’m a huge fan of experimental music and jazz so I choose the early albums (Even Ummagumma but with the exception of Several Species) over Lapse of Reason, Division Bell, or the Final Cut any day. Just love the emphasis on exploration and improvisation the early era had, and nick masons drumming was really inspired too. One key to really digging this era is to listen to it without any biases on what music should be. It’s avant-garde, it’s not meant to be listened to like you would conventional structured music. It’s not going to make you dance, it’s not going to woo you with words, its not going to caress your ears lol, it’s reaching for something deeper and imaginative. There’s lots of great 20th century classical composers with an experimental approach, two of my favorites being Olivier Messiaen and Igor Stravinsky.

The trans stuff hit me, I'm non-binary, formerly a trans girl. My gender fluctuated, I remember the dysphoria, I remember crying to my mother about it. I have this vivid memory of listening to "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead and just losing it, all the emotion that'd built up in those two years came flooding out. "It wears her out" "If I could be who you wanted... all the time, all the time." "She looks like the real thing, she tastes like the real thing"
After that, I listened to The Final Cut, this was shortly after I'd failed at an attempt to end my own life. The track started up and it immediately clicked into my soul, my eyes were tear-stained, time was non-existent, I was spiralling down to the hole in the ground where I hide. In other words, I'd locked myself in my room. I was far from being happy.
I remember hearing "Beat the dogs who cheat the code's electronic eyes" and thinking about every single legislation being passed against us, about the comments I'd had made about me in my community, being told to "stuff my bra with something else." by boys my age. "And if you make it past the shotguns in the hall" again, I'd been threatened by my community, going out at night was no longer an option, on halloween I completely removed my chestpiece and went out cloaked as Ghostface. Even then I was still asked that same question "Are you a boy or a girl?"
There's something about that "There's a kid who had a big hallucination, making love to girls in magazines" line that really resonated with me. I never thought about "making love" to girls in magazines, it might've felt like that at the time, but I just wanted to *be* them. "He wonders if you're sleeping with your newfound faith, could anybody love him, or is it just a crazy dream?" that fucking guitar solo, even thinking about it is making me tear up. I felt as if being perceived as a woman, or girl, was a "crazy dream" and that feeling of "IM TRAPPED IN THIS BODY AND CANT GET OUT" went into my dating life, I never thought anyone could love me, but only me. Any other trans person was valid, but me? I felt like I was an unlovable... thing.
"If I open my heart to you and show you my weak side, what would you do? Would you sell your story to rolling stone?" My mother outed me, pretty self-explanatory. "Would you take the children away, and leave me alone?" I lost almost all my friends, not in a fast "THIS IS BECAUSE YOU'RE TRANS" way, but after I was outed, hatecrimed, etc. I became more depressed, people began withdrawing from conversation with me, I stopped attending clubs, I was still being deadnamed on IG stories, people who I thought were my friends of near half a decade were now estranged from me. This only plunged me deeper.
"Would you smile in reassurance as you whisper down the phone?" I have a vivid memory of my old friend Will reassuring me that he supported me, only to then find out he was shit-talking me behind my back. "Would you send me packing?" At this point, I was sobbing, the lyrics on TFC are incredible to say the least. Of course the being sent packing, to me, was about my friends, about my community. "OR WOULD YOU TAKE ME HOME?????" I'm near crying just remembering how I reacted to that line. I didn't want to feel like this anymore, I wanted to be a girl, I just wanted to be a girl, to have my friends, to have anyone, anything, I was desperately clawing at nothing, trying to find something. I didn't.
The last part is also self explanatory, I'd had a failed attempt not two weeks earlier. "Thought I oughtta tear the curtain down, I held the blade in trembling hands"
And then my dad passed away. There's a mixture with TFC, my dad and dysphoria now. I remember being on the phone with my grandmother, asking if I could see my dad. It'd been years since I saw him, things weren't good and we ended up estranged from his side of the family, but I had heard a few years prior that he was in rehab, doing better. My grandmother just said "Your dad? No." after I asked if he was ok, honestly, I don't remember exactly what I asked. But with that answer, I knew he was dead.
The first thing to play in my mind was "You stretch the frozen moments with your fear. And you'll never hear their voices, and you'll never see their faces. You have no recourse to the law anymore." I hugged the banister and just cried out, and for some reason, as if my mind were trying to console me, The Final Cut started playing in my head, too. "Through the fish-eyed lens of tear-stained eyes, I can barely define the shape of this moment in time."
    I don't think I've ever cried harder.
I found out that I wasn't invited to the funeral WHICH HAPPENED IN DECEMBER 2018, ALMOST HALF A DECADE AGO. Nor was I given anything of his or told about it. My mother had found out about his passing but didn't tell me, it would've ruined me at the time. Now TFC is my album to him. Songs like "The Gunners Dream" remind me of him, especially the title track and two suns. The lyricism on TFC is 100% the best on any floyd album, Rog went completely all out as you said.
About an hour after I found out, I had my therapy (govt assigned by NHS) and my therapist, Pauline, was going on leave after this session. She's known me for years and I only went just to make her proud of me. Can you guess what we did that entire session? We listened to the final cut. That's it. Then it was over.

For Pink Floyd, I think most people’s rankings greatly depend on how much you enjoy Gilmour’s style vs Water’s. That’s why, for me, DSOTM will always be their best album (if not the greatest ever) because it’s the perfect mix of both styles, but I love seeing different people giving different perspectives on my favorite band.
I also love the appreciation that Animals and Atom Heart Mother both have started to get in recent years, I’ve always felt like they’ve been overshadowed by the other great Pink Floyd albums.

I’ve never liked the Wall, but after watching this I definitely need to revisit it with a different mindset.

I absolutely love this video and your iceberg video and, as a trans woman, I'm so glad there's someone like me out there who has at least a slightly similar music taste. I was teased all throughout high school for having Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys, and The Who as my favorite bands, but it's nice knowing I'm not the only one.

Your ranking is completely justified, even tho the reason why you like the wall is very similar to why I like it and wish you were here cuz I went through what they had to do with syd. We all have our battles and for me the wall is a good way to help us realize what our trauma forces us to do and hopefully will be the 1st building block to tearing down our own walls

    A few thoughts:
    * Notice how, when you're talking about Wish You Were Here, your THIRD favourite album, you're focusing a lot more on the things you din't like about it, as if you have to justify to others why that album isn't higher. Always keep it in mind: this is your channel, this is your list. You don't have to justify yourself to ANYONE, especially to strangers on the Internet. I mean, some person asks, "how can they put Division Bell above Atom Heart Mother"? The answer is simple: because YOU like it more. So, here's a piece of advice: focus on the things you love, not on what makes you love a thing less than others think you "should". It's fascinating to hear how other people perceive, understand and enjoy music, and I believe that's what we need to discuss, not bother with other people's judgements.
    * I don't think you need to be a musician to dig Wish You Were Here at all. I guess it's more musically dense than Pink Floyd often gets, but trust me, you shouldn't feel like you should know more about music in order to dig an album or not. For me, personally, while being a musician does give me some added appreciation to certain things about music, overall I just go with what my intuition and my feelings say. Knowledge won't necessarily make your taste "better".
    * It's funny how you question how the band thought it was "okay" to put out the material on Ummagumma, because, trust me, in relation to the whole avantgarde/experimental genre, Ummagumma is TAME. You had way more wacky experiments with tape manipulation and collage going on in 20th century classical music than "Several Species," and Sysyphus is a lot more naive than what was being done by composers like Stockhausen and Ligeti and jazz musicians like Ornette Coleman and Anthony Braxton. The band thought it was okay because they knew way crazier stuff than that (they used to play with free improv bands like AMM, and free improv is exactly that: go on stage and do whatever you want), only it wasn't done by a rock band. Same deal with Revolution 9: Lennon knew a lot of avantgarde music, so for him, his tape collage wasn't anything too outrageous. For the public, it was, but he didn't give a damn. He wanted to blow minds, not please egos. (also, when I say Sysyphus is "naive," I'm not demeaning it: I LOVE Sysyphus, and in fact I enjoy most of Ummagumma)

After spending a lot of time in the Floyd community, one very judgy about what you listen to I automatically want to defend my taste lol. You’re right that I shouldn’t though, I always prefer to talk about stuff I like rather than stuff I don’t anyways. The musically orientated thing is just something I’ve noticed over the years, the Floyd fans who are musicians are way more likely to put it at #1, it’s just an observation
In terms of Ummagumma, I don’t have a problem with it being experimental. I love experimental art. I just don’t think it meets the usual Floyd standards

What's the point of uploading a video if he doesn't justify his opinion? I could just go listen to the music myself if he didn't give his own input into why he ranked them as such.

@@stevowilliams8279 The question here is, who should she be justifying her opinions to: to music enthusiasts who enjoy listening to other people's takes, or to the rabid vigilantes who'll hunt you and beat you up if you don't rank *their* favourite albums as high as *they* think you should?
