I have been anxiously awaiting this video! I had never really ventured out into Pink Floyd until I started collecting records. Pink Floyd is one of those bands that I just could never understand why people liked them. But when I actually sat down and listened to the album in full I understood it. Of course I started with Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall and from there I kind of just started picking up random albums from Pink Floyd. I'd have to say that Animals is my favorite, that I have heard anyway.

Hey Marichen! Thrills me that you were waiting for this one! Believe me, the Floyd were a band that I encountered a bit later during early High scool and it just took me over like an obsession. Once I soaked in their work and did my research and learned the story, it just latched on to me that KISS now had a neighbor in regards to my favorite bands. Animals is absolutely killer, I always crank it when Im feeling on edge LOL. Thanks for tuning in!

so many people knock the wall ...like it's the cool thing to put it down...I have loved it since I was 5 when it came out. every 5 to 10 years I play it cover to cover and it amazes me more and more ....for me I like dark side and the wall the best...animals is right there too...I felt wish you were here is so highly rated by floyd fans that it is impossible for it to measure up ...its good, but I still feel the wall and dark side are the best..I see people rating the division bell ahead of the wall...I dont get it

Finally gotten around to this video! That intro gets me every time!! I can't find too many disagreements with ya here. I've still yet to pick up "More," and part of me wants to as a secret completist, but I question how much I will play them if I pick it up. The knowledge you posses, I sweat to god... A pro! "The Endless River " is something I neglect in their discography, and should pay more attention to. Maybe you're the push I need to get back to listening to it. LOVE ME SOME DIVISION BELL! I was just listening to Meddle last night, it gets better every time I listen to it. Amazing video, Dylan! Love these "ranking" videos, because you don't just rank them, but you give context, a brief history, and explain your actual reasoning behind them. Perfect stuff!

Everyone’s opinion of favorite Pink Floyd albums is different.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of Roger Water. That’s just me
I’d rather listen to David Gilmour and Richard Wright solo albums.
I’ve been collecting Pink Floyd albums since 1971 when I was in junior high school
My first Pink Floyd album I bought was Atom Heart Mother and I bought every one since then as they were released, except The Final Cut, which I have never bought on vinyl, cassette, or CD. And yet it’s my little sister’s favorite Floyd album.
    1. Atom Heart Mother
    2. Wish You Were Here
    3. Meddle
    4. The Dark Side of the Moon
    5. Obscured By Clouds
    6. The Endless River
    7. The Division Bell
    8. Piper at the Gates of Dawn

    10. A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Roger surely had a mark on the band but once it started to reflect his own views (especially politics), then it just turned into a bit of a different animal. Decent ranking!

Great list man, always love seeing people’s opinions on the Floyd albums. From worst to best for me:
    Final Cut
    Endless River
    Momentary Lapse of Reason
    More
    Ummagumma
The Wall (Just never got into the whole rock opera thing but I do recognize its greatness and influence. I think the music really suffers in place of the story. However, it does have some of Floyd’s best songs.)
    Obscured by Clouds
    Division Bell
    A Saucerful of Secrets
Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Meddle (For me San Tropez and Seamus kind of knock this down, just think they’re redundant and pointless tbh the music is pretty underwhelming for Floyd)
    Atom Heart Mother
    Wish You Were Here
    Dark Side of the Moon
    Animals.
Honestly my top 3 are interchangeable. Some days Wish You Were Here is my fav because of how personal it is for the band and how dark it is. Other days it’s Dark Side for how original and unique it is. There’s really nothing that sounds like Dark Side. For me it’s one of those really special albums, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis is another. Currently it’s Animals because of how raw and heavy yet epic it is. I think the lyrics are pretty incredible and relevant even today and Gilmour’s guitar work is absolutely devastating. And I really dig the early Floyd, especially the live shows. I love the really edgy psychedelic jamming thing they had going on during that period. Really exploratory and creative imo love when Pink Floyd improvises.

Great video i love how you research the material & give solid reasons why you like or dislike something. As a musician I love the fact that like food music is very subjective. I mean if i listened to Rolling Stone magazine I wouldn't own 3/4 of the vinyl I own lol. My fave Animals....came out when punk was big in England. Love Meddle...Echoes such a great tune. The Wall Piper & Wish you were here... honestly tired of Dark Side...like I said subjective. Louder than Words See Emily Play... phenomenal. Great videos.

@@michaelfrazia4569My apologie I somehow missed your comment and happen to return to this video a few years later.... likewise, I respect everyone's opinion of what they like and don't like as well. I can only say that to my ears and taste, The Division Bell is a masterpiece to me. Stand out examples though are Take It Back, Coming Back To Life, Poles Apart, Lost For Words , High Hopes, Marooned..
Marooned.. grab an ice tea or your favorite beverage. Layers back, close your eyes and for me... David Gilmore's guitar playing takes me away to a peaceful place on a deserted island where all life stress leaves me.
Coming Back To Life. The music build and and Gilmore's voice truly brings tears to my eyes in this track,it's so moving and heart felt.
High Hopes. From the sound of the bell, to the bee in the background to the lyrics and band. Powerful song that gives me goosebumps.
I could go on... But maybe for you, this album has grown on you, maybe not. Maybe another Floyd album moves you in the way this one does for me. If you happen to catch this reply... I'd welcome your follow up thoughts. Cheers.. .

Hey Dylan. Wow, for a nearly 30 minute video, this thing flew by super fast. Very enjoyable and informative as always. I still have a long way to go in my Pink Floyd journey. Between our chats, the video with Mazzy, and now this one ... I feel like I've learned so much already. I cannot wait to delve deeper into their catalog. I'm more familiar with their 70s catalog over everything else. Out of what I have listened to already (and I have a bit to go), WYWH always comes out on top for me. Wonderful job.

I think I'd rank it as:
    1. The Wall (Epic and grand, with some hard rock and its just a great rock opera)
    2. Animals (interchangeable with The Wall. The 3 main songs are well written and it its a fascinating and dark political album that applies just as much today as it did in 1977. Its kind of timeless)
    3. Dark Side of the Moon (Great sounding and put together, with great tracks)
    4. Wish You Were Here (Amazing synthwork)
    5. A Saucerful of Secrets (Strong tracks, psychedelic and experimental)
    6. Piper at the Gates of Dawn (I actually like this a bit more than Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
    7. Meddle (Primarily thanks to Echoes. Although the A-side tracks are good)
    8. Obscured by Clouds (Very underrated, and a fun little record)
    9. Atom Heart Mother (The title track is great, and If is a great folky song, and Summer 68 is a banger. Fat Old Sun and Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast are okay)
    10. The Division Bell (High Hopes is amazing)
    11. More (Pretty good soundtrack with Nile Song being a banger. Its enjoyable to listen to, but isn't that memorable, but I do think that its slightly better than the other albums, even if most would rank them higher (except Ummagumma))
    12. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (A good commercial rock record, but not very Pink Floyd like in quality. Sorrow is good though)
    13. The Final Cut (too much Waters, although I like his style, this album doesn't really feel like Pink Floyd. However, props to it for being a pretty dark and emotional record)
    14. Ummagumma (too weird for me. The live disc is great though, with the best versions of the songs it contained... Well, until Pompeii came along and eclipsed it)
I haven't listened to Endless River, but I'd probably rank it 14 or 15. Its just not my style from what I've read.
    To elaborate on certain albums:
-Ummagumma has some merit in experimentation, as although it isn't very great to sit through, it is interesting technically and maybe sonically. I just wish that more was put into it, and that the experimentation went beyond simple noise making. To me, its not experimental enough that it becomes truly avant-garde and fascinating, but its too experimental to be enjoyable like their sophomore album A Saucerful of Secrets. I think the title track of A Saucerful of Secrets is what Ummagumma should've been like. Its cacophonous at times, yes, but it serves a purpose (representing a battle) and apart from that its great. I do find the Small Furry Animals song to be interesting because its done without instruments, and relies only on vocal effects and tape effects, which is cool I guess.
-Atom Heart Mother has some great hornwork and psychedelic parts. The two slide solos in Milk Breasty, and Remergence are some of Gilmour's best guitar solos in a studio album. (Pink Floyd) They're very nice sounding and are what I can only describe as very 60's sounding. If is a great folk song, and Summer 68 has some nice hornwork and is a great pop song. It actually sounds a bit like The Turtles at times. (with the post-chorus thing where Wright scats) Fat Old Sun is decent, and Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast is kinda stupid if I'm honest. I do wish they used more horns and other brass instruments, because a psychedelic jazz fusion record would be great.
-A Saucerful of Secrets is a slight improvement on their debut (not to say it was bad, because they debuted with a fantastic album) and while most rank this below their debut, I rank it just above. The opening track is great, with the chorus/refrain being great and stuff. Remember a Day is also very nice, and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun is a mystical sounding song, and I like it. Corporal Clegg is great, and its just so funny. The kazoo solos are just s c r u m p t i o u s. The title track is great too, as is See-Saw which highlights how beautiful Wright's voice is. Jugband Blues is chilling and actually kind of sad, especially with the last verse. It also seems the most diverse in musical contribution from the band. All 5 members sing in it, with Corporal Clegg featuring vocals from the main 4. (Waters, Gilmour, Mason and Wright) It just to me feels the most like a group contribution, with other albums feeling like its just a bunch of songs mostly from a single member.

My musical tastes moved on (but still held those earlier albums dear to my heart) so I guess that's why I didn't get what followed.

I'm a psych guy through and through at the moment ( I ignored the early Floyd albums till last year) so overall my favorites are Piper, saucer, more.
The later years stuff became a bit bland for me after hearing it so much but I do admire and enjoy it. It simply takes a bit more attention to detail to notice something I didn't notice before.

Hello Dylan ! Apart from a couple of small differences of opinion , lower down the list , we are pretty much in agreement the whole way. What are your future plans for listing other artists catalogues ? Alice Cooper ? Led Zeppelin ? Looking forward to them. Have a great weekend and stay safe. Cheers!!

Hey there Roger! What is your ranking? So I can say that one of the artists you mentioned is actually already done and in the can. A lot of people in the comments asked for a Rush ranking so that is something I am working up. Basically any catalogs that I have all of their works of on vinyl are contenders and there are still plenty of options. We shall see what the future holds. Thank you for tuning in as always!

    • @raggeragnar
      @raggeragnar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Record Spinner : Well , the small changes I would apply according to my personal preferences is : I would put The final cut at the bottom , Endless river a couple of steps higher up , Piper at 2nd and The Wall at 3rd. That’s the minor changes. I’m really looking forward to your forthcoming catalogue rankings. Stay safe.

Excellent ranking video, although quite different from my own ranking.
But one thing makes no sense to me: you rank The Wall at #2 but The Final Cut at #13. I'd understand ranking one a few places below the other, but you're essentially saying one's almost the best Floyd album and the other almost the worst...is it just the absence of Richard Wright and Waters' domination that made you put TFC so low?
I feel TFC features some of Gilmour's finest solos, incredibly powerful, heartfelt and emotional lyrics, wonderful production (including masterful background sounds/effects) and beautifully subtle musical arrangements. Waters at his peak. It's top 3 for me.

Yeah I used to really dislike "More" but now a days I enjoy it! Yeah..."Ummagumma" is definitely one of the worst...at least the studio stuff. Yeah...I wouldn't put "Final Cut" that low but I understand you not liking it! It is kinda a Waters album but you know. You already know my thoughts with "Momentary Lapse of Reason" lol! That even more so a Gilmour solo compared to "Final Cut" being Waters. "Momentary Lapse" definitely screams 80s. Lol! "The Endless River" is practically flawless! I love "Atom Heart Mother" too! It is so unique! I agree..."Obscured By Clouds" is one of the most underrated Floyd albums! "Sourcerful" is definitely an early turning point for Floyd! Like "The Endless River" and "Division Bell" are both just so ambient which I love! The beginning few tracks of "The Division Bell" were the last songs my grandfather and I would end up listening to together just me and him! Syd was indeed a genius...sad how he went down. "Meddle" is flawless too! I need to listen to "Animals" more...I always hear great things about it but never really did a whole lot for me...even though I do, in fact, enjoy it. "Wish You Were Here" is one of my top albums of Floyd! "The Wall" can't go wrong...you already know how much I love that one. Plus...concept album! And of course we end with the classic "Dark Side!" Lots of greats man...but did Floyd really put out a bad album...no matter how much I'll sh*t on "Momentary Lapse?" All the best man!

    • @TheRecordSpinner

More is very much an enjoyable record for me. I take it in for what it is worth and the songs and bits are very good. TDB and TER go perfectly hand in hand with each other, not because of the association with the sessions but it just flows so well together, like a complementary piece. Wow, I can see how that album holds a special place in your heart. Animals is a great record, and in some cases, relatable in todays situation. And yes they did, THE FINAL CUT!! LOL jk with you! Thanks for tuning in as always buddy!

CfNot gonna watch but I'll bet The Final Cut is last or near the bottom. It's better than any 80s, any Barrett and it's not a Waters Solo LP it's Pink Floyd, it says on the cover. This LP is a masterpiece and needs to be acknowledged. So if it's near the bottom, your wrong.
