The Hawaiian dragon of lore the Mo’o is what inspired not only Komo’o, but Salazzle and Alolan Exeggutor as well. The Mo’o were said to be female only and shapeshifters that would often disguise themselves as palm trees which is why Exeggutor has the dragon typing.
Happy new year guys, love the podcast!

There's a real-world reason for including dinosaur-like Pokemon in dragon teams and assigning the dragon type to dinosaur-like Pokemon. In Japanese, the word Ryu is used to describe dragons and dinosaurs.

The dragon type vs dragon motif conversation was interesting! I think it might be interesting to talk about it in terms of “genotype” and “phenotype”.

Just a thought one way to think about the pokemon egg groups is how could certain pokemon learn moves that don't seem to make the most sense but they can learn them like scrafty with dragon dance, it could have a dragon parent

The Psychic type is Pokemon's Legendary "type" choice.
    Gen 1 Mew + Mewtwo
    Gen 2 Lugia + Celebii
    Gen 3 Lati-twins + JIrachi
Gen 4 Lake trio + Cresselia
    Gen 5 Victini + Meloetta
    Gen 6 Hoopa
    Gen 7 Tapu-lele + Cosmog-line + Necrozma
Gen 8 Calyrex + Galarian Articuno
    Gen 9 Munkidori
I believe Dragon type was meant to teach you Perseverance, they were low encounter, weak and have worst levelling rates but when fully trained up rewarded you with a Pokemon worth your effort.
This changed in Generation Four when Dragons became box art legendary Pokemon.
Not needing you to actually go out of your way to find and catch them as it was needed to progress the game.
Plus you normally get a Master Ball before that point in the story.
Making them as common as a rock on the side of the road and offering you a reward for simply playing the main story.
On lumi' point on Lance, and none dragon being Dragons, They are all a part of the Dragon Egg group minus Aerodactyl which still doesn't make sense but what is interesting is There is no psychic type in the Dragon Egg group.
Dragon was always a great offensive type, the issue was it had no moves in gen 1, as it only had dragons rage and in gen 2 it only really got outrage which locks you in, gen 3 it got dragon claw and dragon dance which is when the type started to pop-off and then with gen 4 having the physical special split it and the newly added Draco meteor with was only resist by steel types made it the best stab move to go for if you thought they might switch and made dragon dance dragon claw/outrage extremely hard to deal with, they had to make Fairy type because Dragon was to good of a offensive typing.

This was a lot of fun, we should do this with the other powerful mythical type: Fairy. When it was introduced the type as given to a lot of previous Pokémon but imo they missed some out (Milotic, Ampharos etc). Would be fun to see you go through the Nat Dex with the Fairy type too!
Love the pods keep it up folks 💚

I dunno why Terapagos should be a dragon when it's meant to have the powers of every type, Normal is the only one that makes sense for something like that because it's the closest we have to neutral, that's why Arceus is Normal too, and personally I think being similar to Arceus makes Terapagos more special. We already have a million legendary dragons, THIS GAME already featured dragons and if a Unova game is next we're gonna focus on dragons even more than usual. (besides Terapagos's "real" type is Stellar anyway)

i like how in the games being a dragon type trainer is like a lineage thing. we see this with hassel and his sister, iris, drayden, drayton, lance, clair etc etc. The cool thing is that most of the dragon trainers know eachother. Hassel from paldea knows drayton and drayden so he must know iris. i like to think that every year in pokemon world all the aclaimed dragon trainers gather in one place ,like a hidden symposium so they can interchange ideas and learn about dragon types.

1:02:14 I view the dragon type as (beyond literal face-value dragons) the like embodiment of dedication/determination/courage/tradition/(insert metaphysical concept here) etc. Snails will cross the sidewalk at great peril to themselves when it rains, which explains Goodra in my mind. Sushi chefs apprentice and train for YEARS before becoming masters, which explains Tatsugiri to me. It explains why Lucario learns Dragon Pulse, why a lot of the martial arts 'mons can learn Dual Chop- iirc there's a lot of dragon talk in martial arts as well... 🤷

keep up the good work guys. happy new year! few things that might add to the discussion. 1. Birds ARE dinosaurs (avian therapods) 2. Dinosaurs weren't all cold blooded, in fact many were similar in homeostatic regulation to birds! 3. The word for bug type I believe you were looking for was "arthropod", 4. the 'antlers' on a giraffes head are known as "ossicones" 5. there is a great book by Adrianne mayor called 'the first fossil hunters' that you should read, it goes into the discovery of fossils of large mammals and dinosaurs in the fossil record and the belief that these fossils were the bones of ancient dragons, giants and the like (cyclops skull was really a mammoth skull viewed from the front, the one-eye being the nasal passage. so amped for the wood dragon kyurem next year.

I believe Lockstin showed this connection, but the reason that the Goodra line are snail dragons is due to artists in the medieval era depicting knights fighting snails in their manuscripts. The evolution of a typical base fantasy creature such as a slime into a snail and finally into powerful dragon.
Edit:: Small note on Soul’s theory about dragons, and his whole rant about dinosaurs being cold blooded. There’s evidence that they were actually warm blooded, but they also had thick skin and feathers to insulate themselves. There were even some species of dinosaurs that lived in colder, more arctic regions. The part about other reptiles being cold blooded fits though.

Soul: "what would the original dragon's type even be if it can't be Fire and Electric and Ice".
I'll repeat myself as many times as you like ;D
It would be none of those 3 types.
-Electric and Fire represent two different specific kinds of active/exothermic/generated ENERGY
-Ice represents dormant/negative/endothermic LACK OF ENERGY
The original Dragon would 100% not be Ice, because Kyurem is the OPPOSITE of its entire being, it's literally what you get when you REMOVE THE ORIGINAL DRAGON from the equation.
And it obviously also wouldn't be Electric or Fire, because those are what you get if you change the original dragon into one of two extremes of "energy".
The original Dragon would be BALANCED, a middle-ground rather than an extreme.
Reshiram is the past, Zekrom is the future, from lighting a torch to running an electric motor.... the connecting piece is at the beginning of the industrial revolution: the STEAM ENGINE.
    It would be Dragon/Water.
-Water is an incredible medium for transferring energy
-Water is not biased towards any extreme appearances, it adapts to whatever solid shape it goes into
-when you take energy out of water, literally what remains is ice.
These are just random thoughts from the top of my head, but it's just so long been so crystal clear to me that it would be Water lol
And the thing I repeat the most; the original Dragon is not a fusion of the 3 dragons we know, it's an equal to the 2 dragons and Kyurem is its opposite.

7:07 - large dinosaurs and humans never lived at the same time so such legends could not have been passed down. To DustyGogoat's credit, he does initially agree with, "...they find their bones" but then he says, "oh..." and goes awkwardly silent. That cringey moment really made my day!
Gyarados is definitely a dragon. There is a Chinese myth that if a carp swims up a this giant waterfall on some mountain, it will become a dragon. I'm guessing there's a Japanese derivative of this myth which makes sense because I'm aware that a Japanese koi carp swimming upstream is a common tattoo motif. There is also a Japanese dragon koi tattoo motif which mixes the traits of a dragon and a fish.
Also, the base Pokemon name Magi"karp" is a pretty dead giveaway that it's based on this myth.

AND YES, you got to trainer classes!
A lot of trainer classes are essentially EGG-GROUP SPECIALISTS.
If you look closely, even something as simple as "fishermen", they actually tend to use specifically "Water 2 egg-group" Pokémon, because that is the egg-group that seems to be about biological fish-based Pokémon.
But my favorite example is the "PokéManiac" class, which in Japanese is known as Monster Maniac... and they use Monster egg-group Pokémon, like Nidorans, Cubone, Charmander, Aron, Rhyhorn etc.

Soul: "The reason dragons are in every culture, option 1: dragons were real, option 2: they were dinosaurs"
    I prefer my third option:
the only "canvas" that is shared by the whole planet is the sky.
So perhaps there were some incredible cosmic events happening in the solar system that have completely disappeared and we are now unaware of.
Think of it like some kind of spectacular prolonged series of comet-like bodies having encounters with the Earth, causing year-long apocalyptic displays in the sky, possibly even coming in multiple eras with different effects, that would have been impossible to ignore by early humans anywhere on the planet, as they would definitely cause some deep instinctive fears of serpentine airborne fire-breathing monsters that can wreak havoc on the earth.

  • @AdeptCharon
    @AdeptCharon 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Dusty: "to me on fossil Pkmn Rock is hiding a dormant type"
    Lumi/Soul: "AGREE!"
...of course I hard disagree on this 🤣
I am strongly convinced of the exact opposite. The reason the fossil-Pokemon can be perfectly brought back to life through cloning, is because they were Rock types all along.
The Rock typing is why their genetic material withstands the fossilization process and stays in good enough condition to make it possible to flawlessly resurrect their species exactly as they were millions of years ago.
Every fossil-Pokémon has a sturdy part of their body (in part thanks to their Rock type) which ends up being the part that remains in-tact as the fossil that is dug out of the earth.
I've been a strong advocate of this line of thought FOR AGES.
And by now, we have even had some fossils that are not Rock-types, in Galar, and no surprise, they're all messed up, because there was no Rock-type on them to preserve their genetic material well enough!

    Precisely.
    Dragon Type =/= dragon egg-group.
Types are elemental powers and properties, while egg-groups are about a Pokémon's actual biology.
"Lance canonized this in Pokémon Masters" has me dying, cause that feels so recent and obscure,
while the point being made is something I've been screaming for over 2 decades every time anyone brings up the Dragon type 🙃

But Gyarados has always been my favorite, despite Gyarados typing isn't a dragon, but Gyarados always goes on my team and I tend to lean to dragon type Pokemon when I play. Just started the video so not sure if this was mentioned but i just wanted to bring up how on all the pokemon games since gen 3 had an important legendary be dragon type.
Hoenn - Rayquaza and Eon duo
Sinnoh - Dialga, Palkia, but more importantly, Giratina
Unova - Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem (the oringinal dragon)
    Kalos - Zygarde
    Alola - Nekrozma z-form
    Galar - Eternatus
    Paldea - Koraidon and Miraidon
I just feel like there's a larger story to be had there. Maybe i dont just want to believe that every generation, gamefreak is like "ok so whats our dragon type legendary". Thats just boring.
In johto they have the dragon clan that Claire and Lance are part of. In Hoenn, they have the draconids introduced in ORAS. in Sinnoh, they have that one town that Cynthia is from that revere dragon pokemon.
Dragon pokemon are really important in the pokemon world. I just feel like there's some underlying story that not being told yet.

To be fair Pokemon used to see Psychic as the legendary type, it's why a lot are Psychic type Legendary Pokemon, it's why Lugia is Psychic type and not water type.
But that mindset changed for gen 3 which is when we start seeing Dragons as legends...
So the probability is just a "whats the dragon for this game" mentality.

Yeah! Gamefreak probably decided that 15 types was enough at the time because if they added "animal" types it would have been over 20 types.. I think a cool concept would be if the "animal" type got affected by the environment. Like if you are battling with Seaking in the water, it would get a boost to its stats or something. A different calendar means different year counting (it's 4719 for 3 more weeks, then 4720).
They refer to the Gregorian calendar for a lot of civil purposes, and if that's what you meant, it makes even less sense, cause they'd say 2024 when it's 2024 in the calendar that that is referring to 🥴

It should get Rubber and become an Electric/Rubber type!
Ha, this wasn't that one comment you were referring to!

So cuz Soul has a new camera, his movements don't lag like crazy...but it randomly flickers green. Still, his side of the screen feels much better now.
48:54 That's not technically true. Ice was surprisingly solid in G1 & was 1 of the better gens for Ice. It's a bit of a long story, but basically, Blizzard & Freeze were insane, Fire moves except Fire Spin thawed freezing & the Fire type didnt resist Ice, Fighting moves sucked, Steel didn't exist & most Rock-types were also weak to Ice due to their 2ndary typing. I let my strange inner nerd out 🤓

Dusty, as a well-known eeveelution naysayer,
I do think we're getting a new eeveelution in the next 2 years actually.

Just not a random Dragon one for the hell of it LOL (same for any other existing type).
Think they're gonna keep giving Eevee itself weird limited gimmick forms, while saving actual eeveelutions specifically for introducing new types.
New types are always a very divisive topic among Pokémon fans, especially the old "back in my day we didn't have any of these woke Fairy types and Dragonite was a legendary bla bla" ones.
So if you think about it, an eeveelution is the strongest imaginable asset for making Pokémon fans open-minded and embrace a new type, because it is being presented in the most unambiguous and familiar way, heralded by one of the most beloved Pokémon-lines and ideas.
And if they just now start making eeveelutions of some random generic types like Ground and Poison, it would water down this value and impact of a new eeveelution.
An eeveelution can sell any crazy new type. This is not something that's easy to do otherwise.
(...Ok maybe, it wouldn't work well for a Rubber type tbh🤣but I don't expect that to ever be added anyway)
