Some more facts about Viracopos and Azul: in the late 1950s, the very fast urban growth and sprawl of São Paulo made it impossible to expand the city's existing airport, Congonhas, and it was too small for intercontinental jets like the Boeing 707 and the DC-8, which were the main long-haul jets at that time. So, Viracopos was built in Campinas, 100 km (60 miles) from São Paulo, with a long runway. But the long distance by road, combined with the fact that Rio de Janeiro is only a 40-minute flight from Congonhas Airport, which is conveniently and relatively close to São Paulo's downtown and major business areas, made most international passengers prefer a connection in Rio to going all the way to Viracopos in a long and expensive trip by car. Even the late Varig operated its international flights only from Rio, and Viracopos was relatively empty, only with some flights by European carriers like Air France or Lufthansa. It got even emptier when Guarulhos airport was opened in the 1980s and soon became Brazil's busiest airport, as São Paulo is by far the country's largest city and economic capital. (BTW, "Guarulhos" is pronounced "gwah-ROO-lyoos".) Then Viracopos was limited to a few domestic flights catering to the local market of Campinas (pop. 1 million, twice that in the metro area, and one of Brazil's wealthiest cities), though a lot of international cargo flights remained (still an important part of the airport's operations today). As for David Neeleman, he is a dual U.S.-Brazilian citizen due to a lucky chance: he was born in São Paulo when his American parents were Mormon missionaries there (then the family returned to the U.S. when he was still a little boy and he was raised there). Brazilian law at the time he founded Azul restricted majority ownership of airlines based in the country to Brazilian citizens, so he was legally entitled to own and run an airline in the country, even though he had to learn Portuguese (his command of the language is still horrendous today, with a very thick American accent and many mistakes). Brazil is a very large country with vast distances requiring air travel, a large population (210 million people now), a lot of economic potential and an oligopolised airline market with little competition from lazy players averse to change -- perfect for what Neeleman wanted after returning to the airline business after an agreed 3-year period away from that business after he was bought out of JetBlue. Neeleman found that the empty airport that nobody wanted, Viracopos, would be perfect as his main hub if he offered easy ground connections to São Paulo. Azul (which means "blue" in Portuguese) was innovative in many ways and a success right away, and it's the airline Brazilians always mention when asked about the best service. Viracopos is now the large, modern airport you saw only because of Azul -- before that, it had a tiny old terminal (think Inverness airport...) dating from circa 1960.

It's a shame that Viracopos is so underutilized. Unfortunately, the reform took too long, it was always under construction and it was confusing to get there, park the car, etc. It's again under financial trouble. It's a much better alternative for people living in the southern part of the city, as the traffic to Guarulhos is awful.
You’re my favourite travel vlogger Paul, so much information and trivia as you’re going along it’s like we’re travelling with you. Can’t wait for the next one! x
I was just about to click on another video but i scrolled down and saw this video that was 8 minutes ago. I was so exited to watch another cideo of yours. I love you. Keep it up
Looked quite comfortable, Paul. The food actually looked rather appealing, I thought. Croissants should be a food group! 6hrs. uninterrupted sleep on a plane is pretty darn good! Those seat/beds look roomy enough for a side sleeper. Hope you're relaxing at home, now.
As a Brazilian I'm really glad to see this vídeo, and to see that you liked the flight, please come more to Brazil. In case of you actually read this comment, I would love to see you making a vídeo of our main long distance train, the" Estrada de ferro Vitória Minas" aka "Trem da Vale".
Business Class seating is much appreciated on a long flight such as this, and the price seemed not that much higher than I would expect for Economy. While the food wasn't memorable, it looked better than what I've seen on some other bargain airline videos. This airline seems to be a good value.
I like the blue tinted mood lighting as you boarded the plane, it reminds you of blue skies and sunshine :-) Kind regards, Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire.
Brazil is doing well, it doesn't mean all a thousand wonders about silence in the airport of campinas ... in fact it is no longer busy in sao paulo but in guarulhos there you see very loud sound of people talking in the airport lounge, as campinas airport is mostly used for air cargo.

Matt Wakefield maybe when they get rid of their stupid egg chair business class and upgrade to proper business class with a 1-2-1 and DAA. Their pricing would suggest something properly premium considering a flight from SYD to DXB in business costs the same with Emirates who offer a much better hard product
@@CptScotty14 Well they do on all aircraft (Expect for 1 A330 and 3 A380s are refurbished with the new seats with 1 more every single month) so its a good idea, plus on most flights to Asia are getting changed from A330s to Boeing 787 Dreamliners so it is actually good. Plus I think once JetStar receives their first A321NeoLR the 787s that were flying to Bali will stop and I think they will go back to Qantas and service flights Transcontinental and flights to places like Bangkok, Auckland, Honolulu and Jakarta and phasing out their A330s. My thoughts.
It's a very good airline but it's a shame they dont really care about the people who work on it like ramp operators and such. that particular airplane on the rear hold has the loading system broken and no lights for quite a while which difficults the work a lot. Unit load devices full with almost 50 bags or some with 90 (the ALF uld) and sometimes 2 ton pallets arent the easiest thing to load/unload on a plane! I know this because I work at Lisbon airport as a ramp operator. Great video Paul!

Thanks for the upload Paul. From my experience Azul is the best internal airline in Brasil. Latam and Gol are the main competitors and are fine but Azul is just that bit better. I've not used their International service as I prefer to fly Sao Paulo direct to London, a route they don't have at present. They use T.1 at Guarulhos for their internal flights but you need to go to Viracopos for International.

Viracopos was empty because it is the third airport of São Paulo. It is used mostly for cargo planes nowadays. Guarulhos and Congonhas are the busy international and doméstic airports respectively.
I had been waiting for this review! I love Azul for domestic travel within Brazil. I’d rank them Azul, Gol, Latam. But I agree that Azul’s international product is average, but still good for the price. I prefer Latam over Azul for international travel to and from Brazil. I still haven’t traveled with Gol internationally so I can’t compare that one.

Great Video!
Hi I am new to your channel and I like watching it can I make a suggestion. I would love to see what it’s like to be on the Oriental express.
Interesting to see many of these travel channels how the presenter drinks to excess. Makes one think they may have a drinking problem.
Too bad the menus and food presentations are either skimmed over or shown very briefly. I would love to see more info on the menu choices and foods being offered.
Quick question Paul, firstly another great video I love your Channel. Flew Azul last year and had a good flight in economy. Can you tell me the camera mount you use to attach to the window ? Thanks in advance.
Hi Paul
Another wonderful virtual trip for us.
Can you answer a question for me?
Why do airlines serve nuts as a pre-flight snack when so many people are desperately allergic to them?
Don’t expect a Christmas card from Ben Stiller.
