      This is what every football podcast does now.
      If a team is doing well, they gas them up and hype up their chances, only so they can tear them down if they fail. If not, pretend you were Nostradamus and take credit for your amazing take.
      It's why Rory has so many "Arteta's the best manager in the league" and "Arteta's awful" takes on record. Everyone's trying to hedge their bets so they look smarter than they are.
      It's why none of the Man Utd fans on any of these podcasts was willing to openly accept that they're in a title challenge. Because they know that they'd be clowned relentlessly if they say that, then don't win the title.
      Realistically, if Newcastle finish 5th, or Arsenal finish 2nd, or Man Utd finish 4th, it's still been a great season. But people will be calling them bottlejobs regardless, even if they do better than anyone predicted they would at the start of the season. Exactly what happened with Arsenal last season: people who predicted Arsenal finish bottom half were saying Arsenal failed because they finished 5th...

  • @EthanG298
    @EthanG298 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Rory always makes the point that expectations change as the season goes on and I somewhat agree. But just because an expectation changes half way through the season doesn't mean the original expectation should be completely discredited. Yes Newcastle will feel disappointed if they don't make top 4, but does that mean finishing 5th/6th is now a failure? Of course not.

    • @draganmarkovic491
      @draganmarkovic491 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, expectations change but not in the way he changes them. Here he only talks about right now, like when they compare Spurs players and Newcastle players, yeah Newcastle players are in better form but doesn't make them better players. So if the expectations for Newcastle were like 8-9 place. maybe trying to get 7th and they had a great season so far so I would say that if they finish 7th now it would be a bit bad because they would need to have a significant drop of form but if they continue to be in top 4 battle till the end and they miss out it will still be a great season for them...
      There are also other factors, they've been helped by the fact that Chelsea and Liverpool are having very bad seasons so far and are playing below their actual quality, so if Chelsea and Liverpool manage to turn things around and go on to have a great end of the season that would be Newcastle's or Eddie How's fault, and I fully expect Liverpool to finish above Newcastle and Chelsea to improve, they currently are unrealistically bad...

  • @zakilfaraone

    I can kind of see where Rory is coming from, but I have to agree more with Buvey on this. We (Newcastle) punched above our weight in the first half of the season, and I always thought it would be difficult for us to stay in the top 4 even when we were briefly sitting in 3rd. For a team that was in a relegation battle last season, to say that not getting top 4 the season immediately after is underwhelming is crazy when you think about it. I personally think our focus now should be on finishing 6th, and fending off the likes of Brighton, Brentford and Fulham for that spot. Heck, even finishing 7th and getting a Conference spot, coupled with getting to a Cup final - I'd have ripped your arm off for that at the start of the season! Yes we've spent nearly £200m, but that is what it has taken for us to just become a solid team that isn't in a relegation battle. When the top teams are spending £60-100m on a single player, I don't think it's ridiculous to say it will take another £500m (possibly more) for us to become a consistent top 4 team.

    I hate this whole 'expectations change when the facts change'. Newcastle were performing to their absolute maximum ability at the start of the season. You can't then take that version of the team and say 'you know what, this is who they are so they should end like this too'. Maybe, just maybe this team is now just playing closer to their normal level. Just because they spent time in the top 4 and were insane doesn't mean they now suddenly are expected to be a top 4 team after 1 damn summer.
    Also they spent a lot of money, Rory? come on now. YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THAT MONEY DOESNT EQUAL RESULTS. They've spent equal money this season as Forrest, Spurs, West Ham, Wolves, Arsenal and far less than United and Chelsea. Only 2 teams of those are above them. Start fucking going at Forest or West Ham, not Newcastle who could make top 4. Its ridiculous.

    Newcastle’s number one sub this season has been Jacob Murphy and for large parts Chris Wood. You can’t tell me that anyone with that kind of squad depth should expect Champions League. As for Rory’s ‘anti-football’ take on Eddie Howe, Newcastle have beaten Brentford 5-1 this season, Fulham 4-1, Aston Villa 4-0, Leicester 3-0 and drawn with Man City 3-3 in one of the best games of the season. It’s absolute nonsense and I wish someone would pick him up on it

    Dont forget we had a run of draws earlier in the season and then went on to win 6 out of 7, that could happen very easily the problem is we are massively under performing our XG and have seemingly forgotten how to put the ball in the net, seems like Howe may have instilled in the team the need to score the perfect goal with the highest chance.

Your front 3 is virtually identical to the same front 3 you fought relegation with for years being Wilson, ASM and Almiron who would rarely ever score as many goals as they have this season. Pair that with the fact the most clinical player at your club, in Wilson, is out of form it would suggest why you're underperforming your xG so drastically.

And in that time the only league games they have lost were against Man City and Liverpool. Yes there were draws they will look at as drop points but show me a team that doesn't have that.
    Now is the time for them to regroup, recover and push on for the last stages of the season knowing they have a top 4 opportunity. If they don't make it then it would be a slight disappointment I'm sure however I still think if they finish 6 that is a great season for them at the moment.

The point he's making is that with all the money spent (around €300 mil) to NOT finish top 4 while Chelsea are mid table, Spurs win or lose, a Liverpool team in crisis without a midfield, and a UTD team being smacked every few months and were way behind them is disappointing, not bad. Still good for Howe but disappointing. And before anyone brings up how Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool are also dropping points yes and their being called out for it. People rightfully want Conte and Potter sacked and want FSG to sell Liverpool. And also Newcastle were a mid table team who were only in a relegation dog fight because of their incompetent manager who was sacked in disgrace for being shit. People are comparing Howe to managers and clubs who are failing. Not succeeding. Newcastle have done well but no miracle. Same with Seven Hag and even to an extent Arteta if he doesn't win the prem.

This is why Newcastle are where they are and have been. There were 3 spaces in that cemented top 6 which they occupied.
    Newcastle are massively over-achieving this season and finishing outside of the top 4 would not be a disappointment. The aim has been to develop from a team that has flirted with relegation and suffered relegation twice into a challenger for the top 6 over several years not in 1 season.

    Rory is being unfair here ... I think people when Newcastle got taken over they just instantly compared them to City ... Back when City was bought out there wasn't as much regulations with FFP as there are now and it even took City 3 years after their takeover to reach the top 4 so regardless if Newcastle finish in 9th this season and reached a league cup final is a improvement from finishing 11th last season ... It's going to take time and the way Newcastle are doing it is a 'pure' way to do it ... They are not looking for 80m+ signings in every position they are buying for the future like Gordon (even though I don't rate him) and proven winners now like Trippier so for Rory to say coming 5th isn't good enough is outrageous and i'm not even a Newcastle fan so it shouldn't bother me 😂But he can't say Newcastle spending this much and finishing 5th is a issue when he is a Chelsea fan who can't beat Spurs after spending over half a billion in 1 season

    It's kind of frightening that Rory of all people do not understand Buvey's point. Even if we pretended Newcastle were the top spenders this season, there is a relative concept of what kind of squad they had. If Team A has invested £500 mil squad that competed for Top 4 and spends £100 mil, and Team B that competed for relegation with a £100 mil squad, spending £300 mil in one season doesn't give them a better squad than Team A. It was quite clear to the naked eye that Newcastle overperformed. Further to that, Rory is arguing that Newcastle needs to win or it will be disappointing, while arguing against it being a disappointment vis a vis Spurs, because they lose every other game. Newcastle haven't won a game in quite a while, Spurs has. Teams that don't cut it will dip. Teams that cut it will turn their poor seasons around. LFC is turning things around, Spurs is stabilizing by being win/lose. Newcastle are dipping because they have stopped winning, which is on par with their progress.

Newcastle are ahead of schedule but we dont know what next season will bring. What we do know is they have a great shot this year at making top 4 and it would be disappointing not to.

      1. That’s not his point, his point is that Newcastle were in a position and didn’t keep it , basically if Newcastle were never in 4th he would never criticise him.
      Worst part is he’s been saying for the past month that Liverpool will get top 4 over them .
      2. If arsenal were in 6th this year that would be a literal decline because we were 5th last year. Newcastle fought relegation off in half a season and got like 10th place. They are currently 5th.
      That is progression , there is no way you can say Howe has failed or it even be underwhelming.
      When do you ever see a team go from relegation to straight champions league? Never. It’s just a terrible take from Rory and any European football will be great for a Geordie

    To say Newcastle have not had a good season if they finish 5th is a worse shout than haaland flopping

    Rory going on about they used to call it the top 4, it was hard to get in it. Now they call it the top 6… so therefore it should be harder for a team to get in the top 4… £200m from pretty much a championship squad is not much to get into top 4. Teams in the second half of the table spend more. Nonsense

    I think it may come down to Brighton and Liverpool for that last spot, with Liverpool being the favorite. Spurs and Newcastle look like they’re ready for a vacation, and Brentford and Fulham aren’t quite good enough.
