Sure, they overachieved that year. No one expected them to win the CL but overall, they underachieved. They had one of their best teams in their history in the last decade or so and didn't win anything. Worse teams have won trophies in that period. Not one FA cup, not even a league cup. Getting to a cup final and losing is not a sign of success. If they had maybe won a couple cups, been to a champions league final, that team would be looked at more favorably as time passes.

The lack of respect for what Poch did seems to be based on how a lot of those players were viewed AFTER he'd coached & improved them and played em in a good system. Walker was nowhere near seen as best RB in the league before Poch, and then immediately got Trippier playing at elite levels. He had people calling Danny Rose a world class LB. Alderweireld was the same too. We got to a champions league final playing harry winks and moussa sissoko in midfield with harry kane, dele alli and christian eriksen all carrying injuries. I find it odd that players all across the continent are praised for loyalty and sticking with their clubs to try and win a trophy there (Totti at Roma), but with Kane he gets destroyed and called a loser for not going to a club where it's easier to win a trophy. Those clubs contend without him. Would it not mean more to win something with Tottenham? It just feels weirdly hypocritical to me and I feel this criticism comes from a place of just wanting to see him play to his potential on a better team, no? Or maybe just because he scores against their favorite clubs? Once he retires, wherever that may be, I feel like people will praise his loyalty instead of calling him a loser during this era. I feel like the problem with Spurs is ultimately that they've been given this moniker of a "top 6 club" by the media and so they're being expected to compete against Chelsea, City, Liverpool, United, Arsenal...when in reality as much as they've become a stable top 6 side they've never really competed against those sides on a consistent enough basis to warrant the expectation on them that they should win anything. Obviously a part of that is that the owners are very stingy, they don't back managers, there's no real system in place to keep things ticking along through managerial or transitional periods, but ultimately Spurs in every competition are at best the 5th pick in every domestic competition to win something. So if they are always around 5th, getting to the occasional final, regular in quarters and semi's then the problem with Spurs is this perception that they should be competing with the other top 5 more than they're doing anything crazy wrong or there's a "Spursy" curse there.

@@karimzakaria9621 That's my point though, they've had decent managers and decent teams but they've never been on that level to be favourites to win anything over those teams, so when they have to compete with those teams to win obviously the likely outcome is they lose. That's not a fundamental issue, that's the same as calling Everton bottlers for losing to United, the only difference is the gap between Spurs and the top 5 is smaller than the mid-table, but there's still a gap in quality there just through proxy of them having to compete with those top 5 for every single decent player where they essentially get the leftovers. So the fundamental problem isn't Spurs are basically doing as expected of themselves, its that football fans get an expectation they should be better because they're in this "big 6" where any of them could win something each year, which is just a media narrative. They'll obviously get into positions to win and could potentially win something on a good year but they've never been the team you back just from a quality perspective, same as "being spursy" is anything more than fan banter to cover the boring reality that they aren't the same level as the competition.

As a Spurs fan let me tell you what is going on at the moment just for context. The main issue besides obviously Conte not committing is the mentality of the club. We are a big club who doesn't act like a big club. While other clubs are out spending 80-100mil on players we the supposedly 9th richest club in world football look at 30-40mil targets. While other clubs are spending to meet their ambitions every season we end up in the sake situation because we have an ownership who doesn't want to spend money. They are more focused on making a profit which is why we hold qualifying for the Champions League as such a big achievement. We have never acted like a big club despite being consistently one of the top 6 every season. Pochettino towards the end of his time cried out for reinforcements. The squad was becoming stale and needed fresh faces to go to the next level. After Poch spoke about this the club failed to sign anybody for 18 months. We make the UCL final. When most clubs push on from that we didn't invest enough and ultimately Poch gets sacked. Mourinho comes in. Complains about the lack of spending in the transfer market and is sacked a day before a cup final. Conte is at the club now a serial winner who has proven that with investment can win titles again the club doesn't give him enough money to spend. This is a constant loop and it's what is making our fans frustrated. We have players in the team who are still there from the poch era who simply aren't good enough for the EPL anymore. You have a manager who has ambitions of winning things and an ownership who isn't willing to reinvest but what's it done by building a young squad like pochettino but then sack him and hire the complete opposite in Conte. This is why we haven't won anything. We have to show ambition and not have a small club mentality. The fans have been putting up with this for so long now and we are now tired of it

However, what that Leicester group of players achieved is something we will never ever see paralleled. Ever. To say that this Arsenal team is worse than that Leicester group is outrageous. The most overachieving team we will probably ever see. Even if arsenal go on and storm the league, which with City in rivalry is almost improbable anyway, it’s no doubt an achievement but much less an achievement than Leicester’s title.

The actual problem with Spurs, as a Spurs fan, is that the club is building itself up -- slowly, and the right way. Increasing its revenue streams legitimately, building a stadium for the future (requiring serious financing), developing a first-rate training facility, building the team up season by season. Nobody said it would be easy, especially when at least 2 clubs above us are financially doping on oil money, and now a 3rd with Newcastle. Say what you like,. But Spurs is run in a legitimate way, consistently one of the most well run clubs in Europe financially, and that's how it has to be for now. The sport side has failed, whilst the entity that is Tottenham has been massively buttressed and put into a stable position for the future. Not everyone can have a sugar daddy come in and transform a club overnight, and not everyone wants that.......

This is where Rory does not get it. Poch coached those players beyond the some of their parts. He made players who would otherwise have been forgotten amongst the non-superstars of the Premier league, stand up and be counted.
He was not backed. Again, I say, he was not backed. You put that manager in a squad with quality players, and an organization that will back him financially, you’ve got a recipe for some really good things to happen.
It doesn’t matter how it ended. There’s no way anyone can say that Tottenham didn’t drop the ball when they decided not to back, and then sack, Mauricio Pochettino…. and that’s from an Aston Villa fan.
