You need to hear his recording when he was younger called "Crying in the Chapel". Also the one where his daughter and only child Lisa voices over " Stand by Me". Elvis came from tupelo Mississippi. And at the time we all lived out there that's when there was extreme racial discrimination. My family was part white and part Shoshone Indian who were also discriminated against during that time. There was a ghetto part of Mississippi that was just as bad as any ghetto in Chicago or New York or anything like that. Those of us that lived in or around that part. Had to find WHATEVER kind of even demeaning work we could find. Whether you were white , black or half-breed we didn't care we stuck together. Elvis's dad was able to be a sharecropper for a while but when he lost his job Elvis's mother Gladys wash clothes and stuff for people. My family we picked cotton or whatever other kind of job we could find. We ( ALL all of us ) would also set traps or try to hunt for food or either we would go out into the woods and pick wild nuts and fruits and berries. Some of it was to sell but the majority of it we had to keep for ourselves to eat. Also all of us believed in God and we would go to church together. WE BELIEVED that there shouldn't be any such thing as a divided race if you know what I mean. Most of us sooner or later got a chance to move away from there but s***it was a huge shock to realize there was people that was prejudiced against the color of somebody's skin or back then that even if you were white you were looked down on because you had black friends that you cared about. I mean you know your skin color doesn't matter if you get cut you still all bleed red. I mean there's no black blood there's no white blood there's no blue blood or whatever.so it is absolutely stupid to be prejudiced just because of somebody's skin color. AND as for religion every religion has a belief in a Creator in a supreme being. I don't know if it makes sense but to me God is just God. But anyhow this is how Elvis was raised in his early years. So he grew up as we did that you didn't look at somebody's skin color to be their friend. We learn to love one another you know. Maybe someday the stupid world will grow up and look at life the way we did in our little community we had back then. All through his years once he got famous Elvis was known for all kinds of things. What I mean by this is if he saw somebody that needed food he would buy them food give her or give him money. You wouldn't believe how many cars he bought for a total strangers because he saw that they needed a vehicle to get around with weather for them getting to work or to get their kids to a doctor or something. He was great friends with Martin Luther King and really and truly admire the man. When he heard that Martin Luther King had been assassinated it was 5 or 6 mi from his house in Memphis Elvis broke down and just cried. if you really want to hear the heart and soul of Elvis he did put out a gospel album , oh Lord he put his heart and soul into that you can hear it when he sings if you really want to hear him listen to that gospel album he did. As per producer-director Steve Binder's lengthy conversation w-Elvis when Binder & Elvis watched the TV news when Kennedy was assassinated & there were very last minute changes, almost practically moments before which culminated into a song for general world peace & harmony.
His white suit represents peace and the red tie, for the blood spilled in Vietnam and the race riots...this is his tribute to the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.

He heard about the death of MLK earlier weeks and wrote with song and decided to perform at in spite of his manager, and to help protest and promote the Dream of MLK, he wanted to do something meaningful and make a big statement with something he felt passionate about! Elvis’ manager Tom Parker was highly respected by everyone in the music business at the time. Any other big star would have loved to have him as their manager. You are right about this: The Colonel did want Elvis to sing his Christmas songs in the show, and didn’t want to add this song. He wanted a previous ‘hit’ for the closing number, not a new song. The stories about Col. Parker being a bad manager are revisionist garbage - by people who weren’t actually there at that time. The recent movie is full of inaccuracies.
