Such a preachy song on the surface, but all the rude boys loved it anyway... Great rocksteady song, even if it seems a little "goodie goodie"... ("No Rudie, there is no good-good Rudie!")
The man (Rico Rodriguez) playing the trombone on this recording, is the trombone player in the specials. They approached Rico just before recording their cover.
@@LarzGustafsson actually, the differences between Ska/Rock steady/Reggae has more to do with time and culture than actual differences in the music. @@thetruthchannel7073 Confusion can be forgiven. A lot of similar sounds between these genres. Much of it simply comes down to tempo. Ska’s fast, rocksteady a little slower, and reggae even slower
My dad was called Rudolph and he died the year I got pregnant with my son… my son’s middle name is Rudy, after my dad. I’m a late mother and went through several painful IVFs. My son was my dad’s wish in Heaven for me. I know that. However, my dad was a comedian… he would have cussed me if I’d’ve called him Rudolph (!) he was very happy that I shortened it to Rudy. I know this in my heart. After so many failed IVFs, we brought our son home and my partner was playing this in the living room. It was quite sweet.
Rudy is not just a guy! The Rudy boys or Rude Boys is a subculture that was developed in Jamaica in the early 1960s in the Kingston ghettos. The term rude comes from the Jamaican slang word for cool. Most the Rude Boys wore black suits and porkpie hats.
I always thought the Specials did a fairly straight cover. It's not the quality of this, but with the exception of Rodriguez, none those guys weren't as accomplished musicians as the guys backing Livingstone on this recording, and none of them could match his voice. The Specials were simply paying homage to a hero.
You are full of it. The Specials were a smart band, and I play your dumb ass into the ground. Dandy would agree. I remember when the vid hit MTV and have decades of gigs under my belt and so on.
Coventry lad here, the specials are the cities pride, I love their music but I agree it was made as a nod to a clear inspiration of theirs and this will always be my favourite version.
Hate to admit this is the first time I've heard the original. I think the Specials version has a bit more swagger to it (but the horn break in this sure as shit swaggers)
Re: The Specials - Rico Rodriguez played on Dandy's original and the Specials' cover - when the remake was finished do you suppose he said "well that sucked "? I think not .
who cares? a studio musician will take just about any gig. especially in a market like the UK or US. just because it's free exposure doesn't mean it's not still a bastardization of the original.
Both versions have their value. I love the subtly of the original and also Amy Winehouse's rendition. But if one would prefer more energy, both The Specials and Madness's versions are fab. Well done Dandy!
If musicians didn't learn and perform existing music, then future music would suffer, whether for financial gain or otherwise. If there was no "Hey Joe" etc then there would never have been a James Marshall Hendrix.
@@uriah9559 Bastardization of the original, oh that's rich. I take issue with you mainly due to your stupid comment concerning the great Mr. Rico Rodriguez. You clueless fuck.
This one always gets me on the dance floor. I'm 63 but dance like I was 20.
🕺🕺🕺👍❤
I wish. I'm 62 and dance like I'm 63!
😂😂
But now it hurts in the morning.
@@alanrprice I suffer with a bad hip. But I dance through the pain. Such is my love for reggae.
Tip of the hat to the Specials for keeping this amazing genre of music relevant in the 80s. But this is the definitive version.
Awesome remake

This music is from the 60s though
Absolutely. Love the Specials version; it's iconic. But this is, as you said, definitive.
One of my all time favourite reggae recordings. Dandy Livingstone had such a fine voice.
Indeed!
This is ska.
You know whats funny: wiki says, its rocksteady, a successor of ska and a precursor to reggae. Anyway, beautiful song and voice.

Lively beat and great horns! Dandy's voice beautifully harmonized! Thanks for putting this out here.
Ska music is fire ✊🏿🔥🔥🔥🇯🇲
If referring to this tune it's not ska it's Rocksteady

Yes agree ..but reggae wasn't slow..68/69 tempo fast before it slowed down...
It's Rocksteady
Happy 79th birthday to Dandy Livingstone!
Heard it in the movie Vivarium and just had to find it. So good! Love it when a movie introduces me to a good song.
one of my most fav movies!! so glad i found this comment lmfao 🤍
literally the BEST film@@abby-317
Yessss😂😂😂
Me too. Just got done watching it. ✌️
Feeling the 60's vibe with this even if i was born decades later it's fire
I'm 63 still love my ska ball head rule
I like both versions
Oh them horns!!! I love horns, I live 60s aka punk era, even mariachi, what a treat!
Me too I looove that stuff Spanish music too
Fascinating musical style.
absolutely fantastic...later admirably covered by the specials.
the lyric are so timeless that they just prove ain’t nothing ever gonna change same as it ever was
Tight as ****, those horns and drums, and what a voice.
Smooth like Ken Boothe
One of those songs that catches you already after 5 seconds.
Frkn' awesome song. That The Specials brought it back to light is still a good hand of fate.

I literally just learned this song was a cover and not an original by The Specials when I read about Terry Hall’s death. Nice to hear the original.
Half of 2 Tone ska's repertoire are cover songs (and half of the covers are Prince Buster tunes!).
Me too 🤷🏼♂️❤

I will always love this song, he is brilliant 💛
Confess did not know this was the original, fantastic to learn. My music mostly 80s and loved the Ska vibe
Grew up on this in High School back in the 80's just realized today the specials did the cover wow !
A Real Life Living Dandy!! Stone Cold Rude Bwoy!
Amazing lyrics of all times
Man I can't get enough of this sound!!

the Specials brought me here a long time ago.
Awesome......🎵🎶
That´s a fantastic Rocksteady song ! 👍🎷🎸
Yesterday I saw the movie Maggie's plan and I instantly fell in love with this song
Watched the Trojan documentary the other night! Loved it!❤❤
The production on this is amazing for 1967 😵
forreal. everything is the right amount of clean with just enough grit to have character and sit well in the mix
That drummer's timing is outstanding. I doubt they used a click track.
Awesome song to both versions!!!
Oh I remember this house parties we used to have as a kid with everyone dancing ska to this song
A master piece 👏🏿
You're growing older each day, you want to think of your future... a message to YOU...
I love old rocksteady with sub bass
~ The music was brighter on the cover 1979 by the Specials, but this is the original! Cheers, DAVEDJ ~
Best sound version!
such classics are so chill
Original and the best Rudy rude boy ska Jamaican music. Original big daddy music nice 1.
ska-steady was the rude boy ska in the middle 60ts
Ótima música, é um clássico do ska! !
que bom, ne?
Specials bought this fabulous record back Trojan are one of best records labels
Real instruments played by real people. Dandy with a boss voice. The real version.
"Real instruments played by real people" Yeah, this was 1967, you couldn't do it any other way back then!
@@devilsoffspring5519 the ska had more people and instruments
was the specials not a band of real people playing real instruments? I really enjoy both versions, mind you.
as if the specials weren't real people playing real instruments
I love this song I just heard it for the first time on the movie Vivarium
💚💛🖤💚💛🖤
Same here
I first heard this song in the movie “Maggie’s Plan” (2015) starring Greta Gerwig. Love this song!

same trombonist as heard on the Specials cover. Very cool.

Excellent
Found this after looking for the song in that awesome scene from “Chef”
This one is new to me..
Heartbeat...👍
